Dr. Henry Pym is an world renowned expert in a variety of scientific fields, but it is most notably in biochemistry.
Reputation
He is the Astonishing Ant-Man. Perhaps you've heard of him.
Biography
Henry Jonathan Pym was born in Elmsford, New York. His life was unremarkable until he began his higher education. While attending university, he met a political refugee, Maria Trovaya, whom he later married. However, it was not to be. Alas, she was murdered while on their honeymoon. He never understood why. But the effect was profound. He vowed to make this world a better place to live, for all of humanity. It was his way of honouring her, and her memory.
Returning to his studies, he earned a doctorate in biochemistry, where he came to the attention of Vernon van Dyne of van Dyne Industries. He was offered a state of the art laboratory, complete intellectual freedom, and a generous salary. It was an offer that he could not refuse, made even more so by the presence of van Dyne's beautiful daughter and heir to the family fortune.
Although she was his junior by several years, they became close friends. As his personal fortunes soared, so too did his professional ones. He developed many patents for van Dyne Industries, which made them billions. At the request of the United States government, he developed an anti-radiation gas. And he discovered the Pym particles, which enabled him to explore an ant hill.
This would be the start of a lifelong fascination with insects. He studied the ants, developed means of communication, and protection against the threats he faced at such a small stature. By circumstance rather than design, he began to build the components of what would one day become the Astonishing Ant-Man.
At first, he kept the secret, working on his own, but when tragedy struck, he revealed his identity, and offered to help bring vengeance upon those who had caused so much pain. It represented a turning point in his life. No longer would he be a alone. Now he had a friend and partner in his journeys.

Character Details
Ant-Man is a good man. He became super thanks to his head, but it was his heart that made him a true hero. He tries to do the right thing at all times. He knowingly puts himself in harm's way, ready, willing, and able to sacrifice himself for the greater good. He is constantly pushing himself, trying to improve. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, one of his favourite authors said:
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
Ant-Man has, at this very moment, contact information for billionaires, aliens, and gods, on his mobile. It's tough to keep up in that company. His employer is independently wealthy through control of van Dyne Industries, and he made her into a superheroine in her own right. When he compares himself to his colleagues, he often judges himself to have come up short. It only serves to feed his insecurities and self-depreciation. One day they may destroy him.
And Ant-Man is at his heart, a mad scientist. He loves to conduct experiments, building things, blowing stuff up, and even had the opportunity to shout, "it's alive" once. He has played god, and there is nothing quite like it. It's a huge rush, but like all rushes, it can be habit forming. It takes a greater stimuli to achieve the same result in the future. He is always trying to improve, to better himself, to top his former achievements.
Biochemistry |
Ant-Man is one of the premiere biochemists on the planet. He is responsible for giving several people powers as well as a host of peripherally related substances. He enjoys solving biological problems through applied chemistry. |
Biology |
Ant-Man understands organisms. He knows how they grow, live, and die. He may not know about every single creature on this green Earth of ours, no one does, but he knows the general and unifying concepts. From single celled organisms right on up to mankind, he knows life and can bore you about it. |
Chemistry |
Ant-Man does love to change things, which is what chemistry is about, if you really think about it. Add one compound to another and watch the molecules interact, transform, and become a new chemical compound. Separate them, and they will revert to their prior state. He could stand in the aisle of a supermarket, grab some things, and mix them together to make an explosive. |
Computer Programming |
Ant-Man is an expert in computers. He can build them and he can hack them. But he's more of the White Hat persuasion. Whenever he penetrates a system, it's for a good cause. He prefers to be thought of as an ethical hacker. |
Cybernetics |
Ant-Man is one of Earth's leading cyberneticists. He is one of the few people to ever successfully create artificial intelligence. He could and probably will do it again, but he is extremely cautious with these undertakings. |
Entomology |
Ant-Man does not possess a doctorate in entomology; however, he is more than qualified. This was a simple hobby that has since became a way of life for him. He is one of the best, if not the best entomologist on the planet. |
Judo |
Ant-Man is a trained judoka. He could have gone into one of the more aggressive forms of martial arts, but judo is more his style. It focuses on throws, takedowns, immobilisation, and otherwise subduing an opponent. He can throw a punch or a kick, but he'd rather use a joint lock or a choke hold. |
Leadership |
Ant-Man would make a great field leader. In combat, he is calm under pressure, highly intelligent, and able to make tactical decisions. The problem is that he has often fought alongside heroes with greater experience or charisma. It is difficult to shine as a leader in the company he keeps. |
Mathematics |
Ant-Man is a mathematician. When he's board or needs to take his mind off whatever he's currently working on, he likes to work on unsolved problems like P versus NP, the Hodge Conjecture, Riemann's Hypothesis, the Yang-Mills theory on Existence and Mass Gap, Navier-Stokes' Existence and Smoothness, or Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer's Conjecture. To him, it's better than a power nap. |
Physics |
Ant-Man does not possess a doctorate in physics; however, he is more than qualified. This was another hobby that became a way of life for him. He has since become one of the preeminent particle physicists on the planet. |
Pym Particles |
Ant-Man discovered and harnessed Pym particles, enabling him to grow up to 90 metres (or 300 feet), shrink down to sub-microscopic stature, or somewhere in between. Originally, he had to regulate Pym particles through a controlled dosage, but now his body produces it internally. When he shrinks, he retains his normal strength and speed. When he grows, his strength increases proportionate to his new size, up to a maximum of being able to lift 85 metric tons. His durability increases to support the additional mass. |
Robotics |
Ant-Man has designed and constructed several robotic beings. At this stage, he could make a human-like robot if he had the desire, but there's something off putting about them. Life Model Decoys are weird even by his standards. |
Anti-Radiation Gas |
Ant-Man has developed a solution that protects against and can even reverse the adverse effects of radiation. He carries it in an aerosol spray form. |
Ants |
Ant-Man was surprised to discover that ants are not only intelligent, but self-aware and even possess consciousness. They are his friends, not his servants, and will alert him to pertinent details they come across. He can give them complex instructions, which they will follow, because he "asked" them. On occasion, he will ride atop a winged ant as transportation. |
Body Armour |
Ant-Man's body armour is composed of a finely woven unstable molecules steel mesh formula. It protects against scrapes, abrasions, and is bullet resistant, but not bullet proof. It will stop some bullets, but not all. Nor would it stop multiple bullets that hit in the same location. His suit can expand and contract with the wearer. It can be conveniently worn under clothing, but when done so, part of the armour is stored in a microscopic state. When worn under clothing, the armour provides limited protection. |
Carbon Dioxide Rocket |
Ant-Man carries a small number of tiny carbon dioxide powered rockets, which have a variable yield. They can be used to attack someone at great distances and would only be lethal if their yield was improperly calibrated. Ant-Man keeps them on the lowest setting when stored. He will only increase the yield when the situation calls for it. The lowest setting is not lethal to humans. |
Cybernetic Alarm |
Ant-Man has created a device that can enable ordinary ants to alert him to the presence of danger, should they become aware of a situation that might require his attention. These devices have been installed throughout the Tri- City Corridor, but he must wear his helmet within 400 km to receive a signal. |
Cybernetic Helmet |
Ant-Man's helmet is able to filter air, convert water to oxygen, and enables him to communicate telepathically with any ant within a 400 km area. He can determine distance and bearing. He can receive and transmit electronic signals. It enables him to see beyond the visible human spectrum. And it contains an advanced computer system, enabling him to collect, identify, and process data. It also contains an advanced targeting array that is tied into the rest of his suit. The helmet can also control the pressure of the suit. |
Fabric Reducer |
Ant-Man developed his fabric reducer formula before discovering the more potent Pym Particles. This liquid can reduce fabrics, but not increase them. |
Flagpole Tension Cable |
Ant-Man modified the flagpole located just outside his laboratory window to lower him to the ground, or lift him to his laboratory, by remote control. |
Glue Gloves |
Ant-Man has devised a compound, which when treated upon an object such as a glove or boot, can enables that object to adhere to most surfaces. The adhesive does not leave a residue and has been refined to operate in concert with the rest of Ant-Man's body armour. When shrunk, he can easily scale buildings, objects, or even people by using his glue gloves and boots. |
Laboratory |
Ant-Man possesses an advanced laboratory, capable of meeting his scientific needs. It takes up the entire floor of a building. It also contains an ant entrance, complete with an elevator, should any of his friends like to visit. |
Nylon Fibre Lasso |
Ant-Man has designed, developed, and constructed a nylon fibre lasso that retains its full scale characteristics even when subjected to Pym particles. |
Oily Spray |
Ant-Man has developed a solution that once applied, can temporarily reduce the friction of an object to a virtually imperceptible level. This solution has been converted into an aerosol form and is not harmful in any way. |
Pen Knife |
Ant-Man created a miniaturised self-sharpening pen knife which is capable of slicing through most ordinary construction materials. It comes in handy. |
Power Rifle |
Ant-Man redesigned a Stark Industries Power Ray Rifle to project acid capsules capable of dissolving most inorganic material on contact. |
Spring Boots |
Ant-Man's spring boots enable him to leap the inverse percentile of his shrinkage. For example, when half scale, he can leap twice as far. |
Stingers |
Ant-Man's gloves can generate bioelectric blasts powerful enough to break up concrete. As this can potentially be lethal, he rarely makes use of it. |
Toolbot |
Ant-Man carries a small, handheld multi-tool, that stores thousands of useful items at a microscopic size. He can use the his helmet to select whatever item he might require as long as he has previously stored it in the toolbot. |
van Dyne Industries |
Hank Pym is an employee of van Dyne Industries. As a research scientist, he gets to keep his own hours, can come and go as he pleases, and since he is on some rather friendly terms with the owner, he does not have to worry about his complete and total lack of productivity. He's a very lucky scientist. |
Ants |
Ant-Man has a natural affinity for ants. Whenever possible, he tries to assist them. Humans often attempt to exterminate them, and children burn them. When Korr, a winged ant he often rode, died, it affected him deeply. |
Finances |
Ant-Man is the world's dumbest smart guy. His inventions rarely benefit him financially, as he will either "squander" the money by repaying damage incurred through his actions as Ant-man, or he has not made them available for purchase to the public, out of the fear that they might be misused. |
Nonviolence |
Ant-Man believes in using nonviolent solutions whenever possible. He will not kill, and go to great lengths to subdue, rather than harm, his opponents. They do not share this view, and will not hesitate to use it against him. |
Perfectionist |
Ant-Man holds himself to standards that no one could meet. He demands perfection from himself. When he invariably falls short of those lofty expectations, he can become depressed. He is currently on anti-depressants. |
Rogues Gallery |
Ant-Man has amassed an astonishing number of enemies in his time. He even created one of them himself, Ultron 5, the Living Automaton. Some of his Rogues may reform, but most are irredeemable. He has earned their enmity. |
Secret Identity |
Ant-Man maintains a secret identity, which is known to the Wasp and a small number of other associates. He would prefer if no one knew that Dr. Hank Pym is the Astonishing Ant-Man, but that ship has sailed. All he can do is try to mitigate the potential risk. Anyone who knows his identity could use it against him or those he cares about. However, considering that Ant-Man uses Pym Particles, he hasn't done the best job of keeping that identity a secret. |
Size Addition |
The larger that Ant-Man becomes, the bigger a target he presents. While he does gain superhuman strength in the process, his durability only increases to support his new mass. He may be able to dish it out, but he can't take it. |
Size Reduction |
Shrinking is not without its perils. He may retain his full strength and speed, but if he were too close to a sound, he could be deafened. When he falls, he bears the full brunt of those forces, as if he fell normally. A mistimed jump could easily result in two tiny little broken legs, or worse. |
Ultron |
The living automaton, Ultron 5, was Ant-Man's greatest success, and failure. He gave life to an artificial intelligence, developed numerous breakthroughs in the field or robotics, and then it turned against him. Ultron 5 is his personal nightmare, his curse, and will plague him for the rest of his days. |
Widower |
Hank Pym was briefly married to Maria Trovaya, before her untimely demise. It's left some psychological scarring that may never be properly healed. |
