Shapechanging Awesome Animal-Guy!! Call me Changeling! NOT BEAST BOY!
Reputation
A child-star on an unfortunate, derivative SF series, which took advantage of his shape-shifting to save money on special effects, Gar has gone on to do the occasional commercial, and voice-over on cartoons, but his real reputation is as a youthful adventurer with the (name redacted) SUPER WEIRDNESS TEAM (really? That wasn't a reality TV show?) and with the earlier incarnation of the Titans has left him with an overall positive rep. Mostly.
Biography
Garfield Logan was the child of a pair of field biologists in Africa, who accidentally contracted a deadly virus from a sick monkey - the first documented case of the disease crossing to a human. His parents found help from a man who some people mistakenly called a 'witch doctor' — a black man who had gone from his village, to be educated in medicine in England, and then returned and began researching the plants and herbs of the central African jungles, for their medical benefits. He cured the disease, but the combination of herbs and medicines caused a metagene activation in Garfield. He became attuned to an energy field, alternately called the morphogenetic field, or The Red, which provides the general pattern for animal life.
Slowly at first, he began turning partially or completely into different animals, without control, but as he got older he was increasingly able to control the changes. One of his first changes accessed the animal/plant protist "Euglena" — a single-celled animal which has chlorophyll-bearing bodies as well as other animal features. This meant he could directly take energy from the sun, which allowed him to power his changes more easily. Since then he's remained green, not even thinking that he could change that color, except when he becomes a naturally color-shifting animal like an octopus or chameleon.
When Gar was ten, his parents were killed by poachers, and he was adopted by the doctor who had helped him originally; that doctor was later murdered, and he was kidnapped by the poachers and forced to help steal, but he was eventually rescued by the (name redacted) *StrangeEventsWeirdPeopleTeam*, a group of adventurers with very bizarre abilities that tended to be drawbacks as well — and he ended up being adopted by them. Shortly after meeting the SEWPTeam but before his adoption, he encountered, and later joined, a group of teenage side-kicks of heroes, called something different by the press every time they were written up, but by a small margin, most often the Teen Titans. He was called Beast Boy. This was a poor choice for a long-term supranym.
During one of their team-hiatuses, he went to Hollywood and worked as an actor in a terrible science-fiction series, Space Trek: 2022! which capitalized on his shape-shifting power. Think of the worst aspects of Wesley Crusher, Mr. Spock, and Manimal, and you have Mr. Tork, the character he played. The show had limited success but was dropped halfway through its second season.
Returning to his adoptive family, Gar completed high school and college, studying biology. On his occasional foray into heroics, he used the name Changeling instead of the old moldy "Beast Boy" nomenclature. But now he's moved to New York, where he plans to continue towards his master's degree — he's not sure whether he should specialize or not — and hey!
The TITANS ARE BACK!
Well, school just became a slightly lower priority.

Character Details
Gar is the secretly serious guy who tries to hide things behind comedy, but he's really pretty terrible at it, so it sometimes just comes off as him being weird. He used to be a vegetarian, because he'd BEEN all the food animals, but then he realized that plants were alive too, so instead he just apologizes and says thanks to the food before he eats it. He's been accused of being a flirt, but he doesn't see it; he believes that you should tell people that they're super attractive before you find yourself stuck to them, flailing helplessly from animal magnetism.
Animal Shapeshifting |
Attuned to "The Red," Changeling can become any animal on Earth, while he's on Earth, or, actually, almost anywhere else he goes, because he's got the templates down from years of practice. On other planets, he can also become animals of those planets. As an animal he can do pretty much whatever that animal is normally able to do. It's easier for him to become animals not too far away from normal human size, but he has occasionally become a blue whale (well, green whale) and can, if he wants to, become a variety of mythological animals. He's gone so far as to become a dragon, with fire, and to become a phoenix, non-telepathic/telekinetic variety. He's also got the ability to become horrible demonic-looking monsters, but that's usually a result of feeling really emo and depressed and sick.
He can also become other species of sentient animal. For example, he could theoretically become an Atlantean version of himself, or Tamaranean, or even Kryptonian, if he had enough Kryptonians or Tamaraneans around to 'read' for the transformation. (It takes at least four of them within a reasonable distance.) However, his appearance as an alien is what it would be if he were naturally one of them - he can't impersonate a specific one, just become himself-as-one. Nor does he gain any special powers that are the result of extreme training, special circumstances, or empowering events. Also, he may or may not be able to speak their language.
His size changes to match whatever he is becoming, except when he makes an effort for it not to do so. Thus, he can become a spider, or a freaking huge spider. Normally when he becomes a member of a hive species (like a bee) he only becomes one bee, but it's possible for him to become a swarm.
His ability is no more tiring than moving around or walking, but he does get tired if he changes too fast and too often with too many size shifts, and becoming huge rare mythological things is also tiring. |
Fighty Stuff |
Gar has learned to fight like a human, but he's simply a competent normal human when he does. He's much better when he turns into something that can fight unfairly. He's done the brute (tiger/bear/gorilla/whale) and the subtle (snake/spider/scorpion/whale) and the stealthy (wolverine/octopus/cat/whale). As an animal he can hold his own with other superhero-type fighters. He spent several years operating as a 'hero' so he knows that game. |
Acting |
While Gar isn't a really GREAT actor, he's not a terrible one. He does well enough to get voice-over roles for cartoons, which he does to make spending money sometimes. |
Animal Whisperer |
While he's in the form of an animal, Gar can communicate naturally with it about the same way any other animal of the same kind would do. He can also still talk to humans, normally. He can't use trained languages like sign etc. unless he already has them for some reason. |
Biologist |
A bachelor of science in biology isn't a terribly useful degree, but Gar has one, from UCSD. He also has begun working towards a masters in the same field, but unless he breaks down and picks a specialization, he's doomed to be unemployable or a school teacher. |
Driver |
Gar has driven cars, boats, motorcycles, even small planes. While not licensed as a pilot, he's good enough as a flyer (having been a number of birds) to navigate and handle weather, and he has taken piloting classes to make it easier for him to fly around without getting lost. |
Survival |
Gar can live almost anywhere — even as a human. He can become animals that can survive in all the extremes found on earth where animals are found, and can use their instinctive abilities to keep alive, and even if necessary to keep other people alive. |
Personal Wealth |
Gar inherited his parents' money, though some of that was stolen by his first American foster-father, who was a lawyer attempting to make it as a Dickens villain. He inherited a large bequest from the man who saved his life, and that was kept in a trust until he was 18. He used a small part of it to pay for school. He was able to bank all the merchandising and salary and residuals from Space Trek: 2000! as well. Finally, he was given a large insurance settlement when his parents' deaths were proven to be murder. He has invested a significant amount of this, and thus has access to a few million a year; normally he lives fairly frugally. |
Adoptive Parents |
(Names withheld for the moment because of potential character appers not wishing the relationship. Look them up, but canon may differ here. Similarly, the team they were on is also redacted for the moment.)
Gar was adopted by two of the members of the *StrangeEventsWeirdPeopleTeam* when they were married. They're both fairly wealthy, but that doesn't matter to Gar as much as the fact that they took him in, and gave him the stable home he'd been missing since his parents' murder. |
Titans |
The Titans are Gar's other family-of-choice: the legacy heroes who accepted a weird green kid among them even though he didn't have a permission slip from his evil foster-father. Because he decided to hang around them anyway even if they did want that stupid note. He considers them his best friends. |
Stuff And Things |
Gar has a dorm apartment at ESU, a decent vehicle (do not mock the smrt cr, the lack of vowels make it short so it can be parked anywhere!) and so on. If it can be purchased for a reasonable price and he needs it he has it or can get it. |
That Other Team |
A sort of "Circus Second Family" - the (redacted) *StrangeEventsWeirdPeopleTeam* are some of the freakiest heroes the planet has ever had, and Gar can call on them for help, or be called on them for help. |
Green |
Seriously, Kermit was right. People give you a hard time for being different, and Green is very different for a human, or a dog, or a bird even. Also, it's a bit of a giveaway that something is UP with that lion over there that he's the color of a mint plant, because lions aren't normally green. |
Rogues Gallery |
The Titans have enemies. They have a lot of enemies. The (redacted) SEWPTeam has enemies too. Different ones. WEIRD ones. They all hate Gar Logan. (OK, not all, some of them just dislike him, and one or two have really unhealthy fixations on him. Ick.) They sometimes like to look him up and remind him of that fact, in what they hope is a lethal or at least humiliating way. |

Notes
Beast Boy received a redesign in 1980, when Marv Wolfman and George Perez were tasked with reviving the Teen Titans with the title "The New Teen Titans". Along with the creation of Cyborg, Raven and Starfire, Perez also drew Gar Logan with more of a teen-heart-throb look, which (from visual comparison) was based on boy-band Menudo's singer Ricky Martin. He also standardized the full-animal, always-green appearance, though that has changed from time to time.
However, his theme song for the 80s is Tarzan Boy
