Claim to Fame
In his current identity as Jeramiah Wolfson, he's simply known as a man who lives well, well below his means. And that's only if you know him. As the Fenris Wolf, however, he is the force of destruction that needs no introduction.
Reputation
Among mortals Fenris has no reputation beyond that in his immediate circle and he likes it that way. He's occasionally known as someone to talk to when something strange has happened, but given his personality, only the truly desperate try that. Naturally to those who know who he really is, his reputation is quite literally legendary.
Biography
Monster. Legend. God. The Fenris Wolf is a creature of the apocalypse, a literal wolf at the door. It's simply who he was destined to be. Even monsters, however, can grow weary. After countless repetitions of the Ragnarok Cycle - a cycle of death and rebirth unique to the Aesir - Fenris tired of his role in the ongoing sagas of Asgard. The inevitable imprisonment, slow descent into madness and death in battle in a frenzy of bloodletting weighed more heavily on him each time. When at last he could take it no longer he did perhaps the last thing that anyone in Asgard expected: Taking advantage of the distraction of most of the gods around the time of the death of the elves, he slipped out one night and descended to Midgard leaving the Gleipnir in a neatly folded little pile.
At first he did the natural thing for a giant wolf: He fled into the wilderness. For a time he stayed there. The cycles of imprisonment and madness had taken quite a toll on his psyche and it was some time - some hundreds of years, in fact, before he could even think to do anything but hunt, eat and sleep. One gaint wolf in the wilderness went mostly unnoticed. Even a world such as Midgard is used to strange things in the hinterlands and for a time its people still very much believed in magic.
After a time Fenris grew lonesome. A wolf he may be, but the company of animals who happen to look like him, even if he did understand their 'speech' only went so far. In any case, the wilderness was shrinking as humanity expanded and he was starting to become concerned that other Asgardians might find him if they heard too many tales of 'giant wolves in the wilderness.' His relationship with his fellows was complex and not one he was willing to bet upon being friendly. So he adopted a human form and wanded into the nearest norse village.
Being human is harder than it looks, but despite some early missteps he eventually learned how to blend in. As the vikings spread from their icy homes in the 4th and 5th centuries AD, Fenris went with them. As the years rolled on he lived many lives, some nearly heroic, some mundane. He learned how to read human writing, how to work in human trades, how to fight and live and laugh alongside them. But he never became one of them. The predator and hunter can only change himself so much, and so Fenris stayed on the periphery of human events as he moved about the world, ever the warrior or counselor, never the chief.
Fenris learned other things as well. Midgard, he found, is no less a magical place than Asgard, but the magic is hidden and out of sight. What's an immortal to do with all the time he has? In Fenris case, learn everything he could about the workings of the unseen. For centuries he hunted down every tome, every secret, ever oddity he could. He devoured knowledge as he had previously devoured prey. Sometimes he was even able to put these things to use, frequently in the service of remaining hidden from prying eyes and sometimes in the service of those communities he lived in. Wolfish territoriality was never something he could wholly suppress and the odd supernatural creature plaguing the more isolated towns he favored would sometimes find itself on the receiving end of the wrath of a frighteningly knowledgeable, powerful and aggressive protector, sometimes a man, sometimes a wolf, sometimes a combination of the two.
The discovery of the new world in the late 15th century opened up new possibilities for a lot of people, Fenris among them. Travelling to America with the Spanish he vanished into the pristine wilderness once more, delving into the continents secrets and appearing occasionally to the natives when it suited his whims - sometimes as a man, sometimes as a wolf. The establishment of the United States went nearly unnoticed by him, but the nation's meteoric expansion westward certainly got his attention. Intrigued by the boldness of these new people pushing into the untamed wilds, he returned to his habit of living on the edges of their society. He became the mountain man in the woods, the homesteader at the edge of town, and the itinerant fur trader. After the Civil War, he lived for a time as a bounty hunter and gun fighter, one known to occasionally just show up and solve problems of the 'weird' variety.
It was the World Wars that really brought him into human society. There was no escaping them really and the destructive power that mankind unleashed upon itself at once both fascinated and frightened Fenris. He operated as an independent agent on behalf of the allies in France both in 1914-1918 and in the 1940's. When he returned to the US, rather than vanishing back into the hinterlands, he settled in the metro areas for the first time, watching humanity closer and realizing now that as humans proliferated here was a better place to hide from his fellows than ever before. Still, he remained a relative recluse, interacting with few on a regular basis and always on his own terms.
In the 1970's he relocated to New York City and began to settle in for what he thought would be a long period of moving among the masses of the US's most populous urban area. And so he did, for a time.
Recently however, the stirrings of events great and terrible have made themselves felt across the world, from the rise of Atlantis and Themyscria to the return of the Lords of the Aesir to the rise in prominence of the mutant and the metahuman. This has brought the Fenris Wolf - in his latest guise of Jeremiah Wolfson, Park Ranger - back out of the shadows. What is happening on Midgard even he cannot say for sure, but he senses that his time in hiding may be at an end for better or for worse.

Character Details
Fenris is a cultured, intelligent, sympathetic predator. He’s a study in opposites, wealthy beyond any need to work, but driven to hold a job for hatred of idleness. He’s gruff and uncaring with humanity at large, but surprisingly gentle with individuals who hold his interest. Those who understand canine behavior patterns might compare him to an alpha dog, never knowing how close to the mark they’ve really come.
When the Hills Were Young |
Fenris has lived on Earth for a very, very long time and he's learned a lot in that time. He knows how to read and write in the primary languages of any place he's ever lived - which is most of Europe, much of Africa and all of the Americas. He's not wandered eastward in some time and Chinese and Japanese don't look the way he remembers them anymore. The finer points of most of the basic sciences (Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics) are easily within his grasp and a rather obscene number of trade skills as well. He's also picked up a lot of outdoorsy type skills - foraging, riding a horse, dressing a kill and so on. He's not likely to be educated in relatively new sciences such as highly theoretical physics, computer engineering the like, but outside those specialist fields he knows an awful lot about an awful lot. |
Champion of Old |
Fenris has multiplied centuries of fighting experience to draw on which makes him a dangerous combatant even laying aside his superhuman constitution. He's most dangerous hand to hand (unarmed or armed, it doesn't seem to matter) but is familiar enough with the workings of modern technology that he can wield most firearms with ease. When he cuts loose, he can accomplish feats of arms worthy of Achilles or Hector and while he is most decidedly not responsible for those stories, seeing him at work is enough to make one wonder. |
Immortal Coil |
Even without drawing upon the full power of his divinity, Fenris is capable of some fairly impressive feats. Aside from strength, endurance, agility and raw speed (See Fragile Illusions' for the limits on this), he is all cases afforded very keen senses of hearing and smell. He's also exceedingly resilient to harm. Moreover if he is gravely wounded he'll appear in the nearest safe locations (typically his residence or that of an ally) and regenerate, though he is locked in a lupine form and comparatively weak while doing so. |
Ur-Wolf |
The Fenris Wolf is immensely powerful, durable and strong. He is, after all, the wolf of the apocalypse. Making use off the full measure of his divine physicality, however, requires that he reveal himself as he truly is (see 'Fragile Illusions') which is to say, a gigantic, slavering god-wolf. At his peak, Fenris is capable of destruction on the scale of a force of nature, endurance sufficient enough to match powerful deities like Thor blow for blow for days, the speed and agility of an unnaturally superlative predator and, most disturbingly, the instincts of a crazed hunter. He is for a number of reasons exceedingly reluctant to push himself to his peak capacity, though he might assume it out of desperation or if forced either psychologically or magically to do so. (Which is to say, he will do so only in service of plot and most likely in coordination with the staff.) |
Not Of This World |
Fenris is a magical creature, plain and simple, and while he doesn't have the talent to wield mystical energies on anywhere near the level of the more heroic mystics that have cropped up recently, he know several useful tricks. Chief among these are the ability to teleport, speak with beasts, heal injury (with some effort) and sense magical creatures, ghosts and the like. He also has an impressive knowledge of the magical from studying for multiplied centuries. Odds are very good he'll know what he's looking it, even if he can't do anything about it. As a side benefit, though, he's very adept at the use of many magical artifacts, though even some of these are beyond his ability to manipulate. |
Mortal Guise |
Though not human, Fenris is able to appear so thanks to the native Asgardian faculty for limited shape-shifting. He's even able to manipulate the fine details of his appearance, such as hair, eye and skin color, birth marks and facial features. He is also able to make some alterations to his height and build but isn't able to make radical alterations to that nor is he able to change genders. |
Protean Form |
Fenris is able to appear other than human if it suits his needs, which it sometimes does either voluntarily or involuntarily. He's capable of assuming the form of a wolf, albeit an uncommonly large one, even when he's not pushed himself hard enough to reveal his true nature. Still, a four footed form has its occasional uses, particularly when one needs to vanish and your opponents are looking for a man. He's also capable of taking on the form of a wolf-man. This is less something that he actively does and more a result of him drawing upon his power so much that it partially tears his illusion of mortality. When this happens he grows a foot and a half and develops lupine features such as short, fine fur, pointed ears, yellow eyes, fangs and claws. |
Compound Interest |
Fenris is, quite simply put, wealthy. He lives, generally, far, far, below his means but he long ago recognized the value of money in living a mortal existence and has had plenty of time to accumulate wealth. He's not on Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark's level, but he could live quite comfortably by anyone's standards for several lifetimes if he wanted to. When he needs to acquire material things, provided they can be had to begin with, it's usually not a problem for him. |
Long Perspective |
Living for a long time offers advantages beyond simply learning a lot of things. The perspective of a centuries old being isn't often something that people often have access to and Fenris has keen insight on the rise and fall of history and the human condition in general. |
Eldritch Collection - Gale Rod |
Fenris has a small collection of magical artifacts. One of these is a short oak rod, about two feet in length with a leather thong on one end to which are attached a pair of feathers (which are from a thunderbird). The rod is capable of commanding and creating winds in excess of 200 miles an hour with extreme precision. He can use it to fly, fling things and knock people over. It's also seen some service as a baton in the past. |
Eldritch Collection - Moonsilver Sliver |
Fenris has a small collection of magical artifacts. One of these is a simple necklace - a fine silver chain with what looks like a sliver of unworked silver ore on it. That sliver is enchanted and can reshape itself into a blade of nearly any size and shape from dagger to great-sword. His favored forms for it are a utility knife, a pistol-handled Keriss and what's known in spathology circles as an Oakeshott Type XIIIa. It should be noted that, shiny though it may be, it does not count as silver for the purposes of things that may be vulnerable to it. It is quite sharp, though. |
Eldritch Collection - Sanguine Sash |
Fenris has a small collection of magical artifacts. One of these is a red silken sash, nine feet in length, from India. While normally simply what it appears to be - a length of red silk - place but a drop of blood upon it and it comes almost literally alive. While so infused it can extend up to ten times it's normal length, is unbreakable by mundane means (magical or superhuman ones still work) and can whip about, wrap and grip at the whim of the wielder. As a final benefit, if it is torn, any tears can be mended later by collecting a scrap of it, applying a drop of blood and burying it for a night. |
All Tongue |
Like most Asguardians, Fenris can understand and be understood in any spoken language. This does not confer the ability to read or write in those languages. (He's had to work on that.) |
Dire Legend |
The things that the Fenris Wolf has done are legend among humanity and very uncomfortable memory among his fellow Asgardians. Even without his generally mistrusting nature, man and god are slow to trust him when his true nature is known. This is exacerbated by the deceptions necessary to maintain his mortal facade. Those who discover his true nature will be likely to assume the worst… and it's hard to blame them. |
Thicker Than Water |
Fenris has family, though that's not commonly known to mortals who aren't mythology enthusiasts. The problem is who it is. His Father is Loki Liesmith and his siblings are respectively Slepnir, the Midgard Serpent and Hel. With the exception of Slepnir the lot of them are destructive schemers who are deeply unpopular with most of the rest of Asgard. Guilt by association is common and of course it's probably only a matter of time before he runs into one of them and they try to get him to help on their latest plan. |
In the System |
Fenris has a legitimate mortal life. He's got a drivers licence, passport, bank accounts (that aren't his secret Swiss ones) and a part time job with the Forest Service. Any of this data could be used to track him if someone were to make the connection between his present alias and his true self. Moreover, a sufficiently determined sluth could probably connect several of his past lives and come to some uncomfortable (and possibly erroneous) conclusions themselves. Finally, he has to change his identify every few decades, because it's not as if he ages… |
Fragile Illusions |
While Fenris' power is considerable and doesn't actually change, the ability of his various non-native forms to contain that power is limited. When appearing as a human he can display feats of prowess up to the level of an enhanced human the likes of the Black Widow without tearing his illusion. Pushing past that up to the level of a champion of Asgard such as Sif - actually a bit beyond Sif in terms of raw strength, he can do about 40 tons - reveals some of his bestial nature and forces the appearance of a wolf-man upon him. Pushing himself beyond even that requires that he assume his Ur-Wolf form. Maintaining a wolf form is somewhat easier. He can push all the way clear up to Asguardian levels while maintaining the form of a large, but otherwise mundane wolf. The harder he pushes, though, the larger and less natural appearing he gets. Pushing beyond the levels of an Asgardian Champion, though, forces an apotheosis on him and makes him take his Ur-Wolf form. |
Predatory Air |
While Fenris' human guise is near perfect, his nature cannot be entirely concealed by illusion magic on the scale that he's able to wield. As such, most people notice something a bit off about him - a thrill of danger about him. He pulls off the 'big, bad and dangerous' vibe without even doing anything in particular. It attracts some people and repels others and is generally always trouble. On those rare occasions that he adopts a wolf form, the feeling is multiplied several times over. |
Dog Eat Dog World |
Fenris isn't actively hostile to humanity at large, but neither is he particularly benevolent toward them. He's shown surprising capacity to care for individuals, but many of his more helpful actions toward groups of people stem more from a sense of wolfish territoriality than any fidelity he feels toward them. No ghost or troll or nymph will terrorize *his* village, or town or what have you. Consequently he can appear blase, cold or distant when the fates of impersonal groups are on the line. His humanity is just a lot harder to appeal to. |
Set Fire to the Heavens |
Fenris has no fond memories of any of the gods (though he feels a bit bad about that whole Iduna thing). None of them. They're responsible for uncounted millennia of abuse, isolation and madness and he wants nothing more than to never see any of them ever again. He is particular ire, though, is reserved for Odin whom he views as the orchestrator of his miserable life prior to his exile, and Tyr, the traitor who lied to him about the Gleipnir and deserved so much more than a missing hand. He may not attack Asgardians on sight, but they're not likely to get much more than a chilly reception from him until he's satisfied they're on the up and up (good luck). |
Destroyer Wolf |
Fenris is, no question about it, a monster. Assuming his Ur-Wolf form includes dealing with a level of bloodlust that does not completely divorce him from his senses, but does make it difficult for him to tell friend friend from foe. He knows full well that wreaking destruction on the scale he's capable of would, at the very least, draw a strong response from the mortals who have become so dangerous in the last hundred years, and at worst, bring the wrath of Asgard down on his head. For this reason, he will not use his Ur-Wolf form except in the direst of circumstances, or unless forced in some manner. |
Cleisiophobia |
Fenris will not, under any circumstances, allow himself to be meaningfully imprisoned. He is perfectly willing to let himself be locked up in, say, a mortal jail when he has full control of his abilities because he knows he can leave at any time. However threatening to meaningfully confine him will make him very quickly angry and unreasonable. Actually succeeding at the task will send him right back into a rage fueled frenzy, attacking anything and everything in sight at full power. Should his confinement last too long, there’s an excellent chance he’ll have a Destroyer Wolf episode… and gods help you then. One isn’t likely to be enough. |
Magically Active |
As a creature of magic, Fenris will register on the senses of others who can read its flows, and anyone with any faculty at all will know straight away he's so much more than what he seems to be. |
