Claim to Fame
Hal Jordan's an Air Force hero with a few medals and a test pilot for some of the country's most top-secret superplanes (or so he's heavily implied while flirting with a reporter from Vanity Fair). Green Lantern is a shining light in the sky, Defender of Earth, an emerald beacon of hope and has a really strong, manly jaw (according to Marybeth in Accounting).
Reputation
Hal Jordan's a reckless, brash, often-stupid, stubborn and rebellious pain in the ass. He also happens to be one of the best damn pilots in the world and he's not afraid to let you know it. Ego or not, he's always backed it up, even if he sometimes takes the kind of risks you shouldn't take with several billion dollars of taxpayer money. He's known to drink hard and play hard, and he doesn't like a lot of questions about his past. Green Lantern's been on the superhero scene for a couple of years, mostly showing up to fight off aliens or stave off major disasters, although the occasional regular villain has caught his attention. So far, he doesn't seem to play well with others, flying solo most of the time.
Biography
Hal Jordan grew up in California, the son of a pilot, surrounded by brothers and dreaming of the sky. He idealized his father, a pilot, even if the old man sometimes knocked back a few too many (or knocked him and his brothers around). Isn't that what Dads did? When Dad crashed a plane on the landing strip, going up in flames while Hal and his brother waited, the rest of the Jordans lost their taste for aircraft. Not Hal. A star athlete in high school, Hal surprised everyone by turning down football scholarships to sign up for the Air Force.
He became a hell of a fighter jock, streaking across the Middle East, bombing terrorist camps, launching drones. War, though, left something bitter in his mouth. He never could feel quite good about killing, no matter that it was part of war. When his tour was up, he used some contacts he'd made to get a job in the private sector, testing out experimental aircraft systems and matching them up against prospective defenses. He also made himself the terror of nearby towns and watering holes, drinking men under the table and leaving with their girlfriends. Occasionally, he'd have to throw a punch or two. Sometimes he'd win, sometimes he'd lose, either way they'd usually end up laughing. Well, if Hal didn't knock them out.
One night, a falling star across the sky caught his attention, so close, literally aflame in the sky - and suddenly the world went green. Scooped up, Hal met Abin Sur, a dying alien, protector of this realm of space and member of the Green Lantern Corps. As he lay dying, his ring sought out the most fearless, suitable candidate, the one with the most unbreakable will. Hal didn't need to explain that meant him. Using the ring's power, he was able to defeat the aliens who lead to Sur's death, before being summarily summoned to Oa. There, the Guardians of the Universe put him through Green Lantern boot camp alongside countless other aliens. He exceeded expectations in all methods of performance, showing matchless potential. The only thing the Guardians didn't like was Hal's penchant for free thought and distaste for following orders. But it was agreed that, for now, he was the best candidate.
And so, Hal Jordan returned to Earth and, for the last few years, has spent his time defending the world from threats great and small. And, when he can, he still flies a way to enjoy fast planes, fast cars, fast drinks and fast women. Not too shabby for a kid from Coast City.

Character Details
Hal's the high school quarterback, the town hero, the golden boy whose life always seems to go his way. That's the way it looks on the surface and that's the way he wants it to keep looking. To some degree, it's true. His love of danger and addiction to adrenaline push him close to the flame, but he's yet to get more than a first (well, maybe second) degree burn. He isn't fond of over-thinking things, preferring to live by impulse, in the moment. He works hard, fights hard, plays hard, drinks hard, chases skirts hard (and is the kind of guy who still thinks it's okay to say 'chasing skirts'). Can be a bit of a neanderthal, but isn't quite as much of one as he pretends to be. Smarter than people give him credit. Fast-thinking, cool under pressure. Hard to get to know, but deathly loyal to those who get past his defenses. Private, uncomfortable with emotion or sentiment. The kind of guy you want in a foxhole with you, even if he sometimes drives you nuts.
Energy Constructs |
By channeling his will through the Green Lantern ring, Hal can create constructs out of the lantern's signature green energy. These constructs are limited only by Hal's imagination, and can vary from everything to simple structure (Spheres, boxing gloves, hammers) to complex machines like cars or spaceships. So long as he can see them working in his head, he can make it so. That means he can even create constructs that possess the qualities of matter, such as generating other kinds of radiation from the green lantern energy or causing green fire to erupt from a torch or flamethrower, complete with a thermal element. The strength of the creation is tied into both the user's will and his degree of concentration, but Hal has proven to have tremendous amounts of both, and has routinely created creations able of lifting, withstanding and dishing out up to 100 tons of force or beyond, if required. Requiring a construct takes regular concentration, unless he finds a secondary energy source to tie into its maintenance (i.e. passes it off to another lantern or ties it off to a lantern battery). He can also simply unleash raw force and will as a solid energy blasts, raw destruction capable of blowing through heavy armor or staggering inhumanly indestructible enemies. |
Force Field |
The Green Lantern ring surrounds its wearer with a powerful forcefield at any threat or damage to the wielder, not to mention instantaneously at the wielder's command. The field, usually manifesting as a glowing, tight glow surrounding Hal, can be extended to far larger degrees, enabling him to create fields capable of shielding entire areas, even cities whole, provided the necessary threat provoked the proper amount of will (although keeping that up for long would be tremendously stressful on Hal). The amount of damage the field can take depends on the will and concentration of the user, along with the amount of energy left in the ring itself. Hal has demonstrated the ability of generating forcefields capable of protecting him from massive blasts of cosmic energy, the blows of superhuman behemoths and plunging into an active volcano. The field also produces an environment capable of sustaining Hal's life in the vacuum of space, keeping him oxygenated indefinitely and protected from the forces of the vacuum. Very useful for a hero often summoned into space. |
Flight |
Concentrating his will through the ring, Hal can fly at tremendous speeds, more than twice the speed of sound in an atmosphere and, in the vacuum of space, very close to the speed of light, allowing him to speed along through the solar system and near space at a very fast rate. His forcefield will keep him oxygenated and protected from friction and harm caused as a result of these high speed flights. Given his piloting background, there's no surprise that Hal flies with tremendous skill and subtlety, as much a daredevil in the air on his own as he ever was with a plane, capable of tricks, rolls and maneuvers that can often baffle opponents. Among flying superheroes, he is easily among the most deft and skilled at the ability. |
||~ Light Manipulation ||
The ring enables Hal to manipulate ambient electromagnetic energy in the area nearby, most notably visible light. He can refract light to make himself, others or other objects invisible, even capable of absorbing or redirecting radar waves in a stealth fashion. He can create illusions within his line of sight, although their ability to pass muster is based in Hal's concentration and attention to detail (which, for some things, can be a little lax now and then). He can also refract right to give his creations colors other than green, letting him make more accurately realistic constructs - he usually just doesn't bother wasting the energy in a fight or emergency situation. He can also, incorporating his ring's energy absorption capabilities as well, create pockets of total darkness in which he alone can see and sense. |
Communications |
Green Lantern rings serve as universal translators, enabling a GL to understand and communicate with creatures of countless alien and foreign languages with perfect clarity. He can pick up transmissions like radiowaves, datalink or even off of fiber-optic cables, including parsing encrypted communications through the universal translator. He can focus light and energy to see and communicate at great distances, from hundreds of miles away. He even has the capability of sending a 'ghost' projection, a duplicate of himself that can hear, speak and interact with others as if it were him, even though he's elsewhere, transmitting the data back and forth through the ring into Hal's mind. He can even send such projections across the universe through spatial bending and wormholes, allowing him to even communicate directly with Oa or Lanterns on other worlds while remaining on Earth. The rings also allow Hal to communicate with any other Green Lantern wearing a ring telepathically throughout the universe (although bugging somebody you don't know is probably going to be you blocked unless you've got a good reason - it's not a chatline). |
Energy Absorption |
While it will not recharge the ring itself, the ring enables Hal to absorb virtually any form of energy harmlessly into it. He can draw off excess electrical blasts, absorb the head of an explosion, deactivate a magnet about to tear apart a city, create darkness by absorbing the overwhelming light of a laser blast…if it's energy, he can take it in, so long as he can keep his concentration and will up |
Space Warping |
Green Lanterns possess the ability to apply their wills to space itself, causing it to fold and reshape space in limited ways in order to shortcut into larger wormholes and interspacial travel pathways. In this fashion, Green Lanterns can travel vast distances in space in relatively short periods of time, cutting distances of centuries, even at near-light speed, to a matter of hours or days. Some wormholes are more stable than others, and, once entered, Hal needs to maintain his concentration fully to make sure he ends up at his desired destination and that he doesn't accidentally collapse the pathway or have himself drift from his aim. More than a few Lanterns have accidentally lost themselves, crushed in the tunnels of hyperspace due to a lack of diligence. |
Super-Strength |
Using his force-field like an energy construct, Hal can simulate superhuman strength ranging up to near the 100 ton range. While this is essentially a form of energy construct, it gives a more direct tactile control by having the construct follow the lines of his body and mold directly to his inherent fighting abilities. When other Lanterns see him do this, they usually call Hal a "big show off". They're not wrong. |
Healing |
Green Lantern rings can generate energies capable of regenerating damages biological tissue, resulting in spontaneous healing. Doing so requires concentration and, in the cases of severe injuries, actual anatomical knowledge. Hal doesn't have the latter, but he can usually heal up bruises, contusions, broken bones, open wounds, in himself or even in others. He's unlikely to use the energy to do so in combat, though, as it requires total focus and might even leave his shield dropped as it focused its energies inward. Still, it's a way to help himself and his allies recover in the aftermath of big fights. |
Pilot |
Hal Jordan's one of the best, if not the best, fighter pilots in the entire world. His quick wits and quicker reflexes make him a master in the cockpit, capable of executing maneuvers and tricks that would get your average pilot killed in a heartbeat (and still give his bosses near heart attacks as it is). While most familiar with military style fighter jets and experimental planes, he could apply his knowledge to any form of Earth aircraft and, with a little help from his power ring, any alien spacecraft as well. He's also a hell of a good driver with a fast car and has run people crazy with a motorcycle on occasion. If it goes fast, Hal Jordan likes it. |
Military Training |
Hal served for four years in the United States Air Force, most of them as a pilot for both jets and targetted remote drones. He's been trained in hand-to-hand and weapons combat, although he's probably a bit rusty with the weapons. He's kept the hand to hand up with the occasional bar brawl and, of course, since he's become a superhero. He also knows fairly straightforward strategy and tactics, as well as military jargon and methodology. |
Charming |
Hal gets away with so much of his general bad behavior because he's damn charming. Good looking, with vivid blue eyes and a strong jaw, even most men aren't immune to the sparkle in his eyes, this strange mixture of handsome man and feckless boy. One of his commanding officers called him "Huck Finn in a cockpit". When he wants to charm or get on your good side, he's damn good at it, his smooth self-confidence making him difficult to dislike (at least, to his face - people will often realize he was an ass, but not until after he walks away). Romantic endeavors, it goes without saying, have been largely successful, but he's just generally good at being liked. Unless he doesn't like you. Because then he'll probably make sure you hate him. |
Green Lantern Battery |
The Green Lantern Battery (hey, it looks like a Lantern! Keen!) allows Hal to draw energy from the central power battery to recharge his ring. If he has energy remaining in his ring, he can summon it to him, but, if he's totally out, he must return back to the lantern in order to charge. He may or may not need to recite a chant to recharge it. He doesn't like being asked about that. |
Galactic Knowledge |
The Green Lanterns have collected vast amounts of data and history as part of their records on Oa. Through his ring, Hal can access these stores of knowledge when necessary, giving him a chance to understand alien cultures or to give him a history of, say, galactic wars in a region or how to identify what species of alien with which he's dealing. It's also invaluable for galactic navigation, steering him through the vast regions of hyperspace, through warp tunnels, black holes and the like, from place to place in deep space. |
Indomitable |
Hal Jordan has, quite simply, one of the strongest wills on Earth and beyond. His determination and sense of self make him incredibly hard to discourage, allowing him to perform extraordinary feats of bravery, to resist surrendering even against terrible odds and to operate his Green Lantern ring with tremendous amounts of raw power. His will makes him extremely difficult to mind control or psychically dominate, and he's essentially impossible to brainwash. Anyone trying to match wills with Hal Jordan should probably just give up in advance. |
Green Lantern Corps |
The Green Lantern Corps is a massive police force spread throughout the known universe, each with a ring exactly like Hal's, capable of instantaneous communication and intergalactic travel on relatively short notice in times of trouble. When universe-spanning cosmic threats erupt, Hal can summon the rest of the Corps in to help (provided that the Guardians back his play and give it their stamp of approval). Generally, though, Hal is expected to protect his own sector and handle local threats without outside assistance (or, at most, just a couple of other Lanterns, not a massive outpouring of the Corps). |
Guardians |
The Guardians of the Universe have existed almost since the beginning of time. They created the Green Lantern Corps, maintain the Central Power Battery on Oa and serve as a council of incredible wisdom, learning and judgment (not to mention possessing amazing power in their own rights). The experience and advice of the Guardians can be priceless when facing threats from the stars. Of course, Hal's sometimes contentious relationship with them does sometimes limit the full benefit of this advantage. |
Cool Hand |
Hal's been a fighter pilot, an intergalactic superhero, put in the middle of war-zones, and he's done it all and come out alive. He's hard to rattle. If anything, his ability to stay cool under pressure contributed to his survival. If anything, he excels in situations of danger or risk, the adrenaline rush only heightening his abilities without shaking his nerves. Intimidating him just doesn't happen. He'll go eyeball-to-eyeball with a galactic despot - and then he'll spit in his face. And he expects to get away with it. Crazy bastard. |
Little Blue Jerks |
The Guardians of the Universe seem kind of like buttheads to Hal. Oh, sure, they've got huge stores of ancient knowledge and wisdom. They can tell you amazing things you never imagined, they can give you clues or help you understand how best to defeat evil, and they continue to press for order and good throughout the universe. They're also officious, petty, weird, creepy, demanding, egotistical, smug Smurf-colored munchkins with foreheads like the aliens from This Island Earth. They always have their own agenda, they often hide things and they tend to expect absolute obedience without question. Hal is really bad at that. He fights with his bosses a LOT. He gets punished, called back to Oa, generally vocally reprimanded, denied back-up. He sometimes thinks they actively want him to quit, except he's just too damn good and they know they can't do without him. Of course, this is Hal's personal interpretation - the truth may be much different. |
Energy Limits |
While his power ring can channel immense amounts of green energy, his ring's charge is finite and must be recharged periodically with his personal battery connected to the central core on Oa. If he doesn't use the ring, he can do without charging, but he tends to try and do it once a day regardless, just to make sure. If he's going to be far away, he makes sure to keep track of his energy reserves, so that he may summon his lantern from afar to recharge. Recharging takes time, though, and time isn't always available. And sometimes he has to use every last bit of energy he has right at the moment and will not be able to recharge without someone helping him get back to his battery (or bringing it to him). This doesn't happen very often, but, when it does, it leaves him completely vulnerable. |
Stubborn |
Hal doesn't listen very much. He tends to follow his own judgment and, while he's smart and capable and can figure things out, sometimes he's wrong. When he's wrong, it's usually damn hard to convince him he's wrong. He usually has to just screw up and try to fix it afterwards, 'cause he won't believe it in advance, no matter how hard his allies or friends try to tell him. It's not one of his best traits. Pointing it out to him won't make him like you better, though. |
Psychic Exhaustion |
Using the ring requires willpower, imagination and raw thought. The more intensely and the longer he uses his ring, the more mentally weary and tired Hal can become. Heavy expenditures, such as keeping up shields against powerful onslaughts or suspending massive weights, flying vast intergalactic distances at hyperspeed without rest, can even cause psychic pain, migraines, unconsciousness. Once he's exhausted, he'll usually need a full sleep cycle in order to recover entirely, although a short period of unsconsciousness, maybe a few hours, can partially restore him enough to at least operate. |
Rebel |
Hal Jordan doesn't like being told what to do. That was true even as a kid, but he always, at least, listened to his father. Since his dad died, Hal seems to almost make a point of defying anyone else who tries to put their authority over him. While he excelled as a flier in the Air Force, even earning commendations, he also got busted plenty of times, yelled at by commanding officers, cussed out, even thrown in the brig once or twice, usually for fighting, talking back or general mischief. He also went AWOL to hit the bars sometimes (and you can imagine how hard it is to find a bar that speaks English in Kabul - although somehow he always managed). His bosses in the private sector and, of course, the Guardians of the Universe find him an equally wearying employee. Anyone who tries to boss Hal Jordan around is going to have him in his face, challenging that authority. That's not to say they can't prove themselves worthy of being obeyed - but it's not going to be given freely, that's for damned sure. |
Fear |
Fear is the antithesis as will, the Green Lantern's bane. While Hal Jordan has an incredible, indomitable will, while he is surely one of the bravest men alive, no man is entirely immune to fear. If he succumbs to fear, either naturally or by outside influence (such as a toxin or a superhuman effect), his energy constructs will grow weak, falter, and perhaps fail entirely. Being who radiate fear energy have an advantage in resisting green lantern energies. |
Concentration |
Using a Green Lantern ring requires conscious thought and direction. Anything that disrupts the ability to concentrate, think cogently or imagine successfully can make it more difficult or even impossible to use a ring. This can be anything from certain kinds of subsonic vibrations and disruptive attacks to drugs or sensory effects (such as attacks on the balance center). Even just personal failure or trauma, the raw emotion growing too overwhelming to push through. In this state, only the automatic effects of the ring (protective shield on attack, universal translator, emergency beacon) can be utilized. |
Ring-Dependent |
All of Hal's powers, obviously, derive from his Green Lantern ring and battery. If his battery were to be stolen, he would only have the current charge on his ring, unless he could find a way to reach Oa or have another Lantern bring him a battery. If his ring were to be removed, he would simply be a normal man (a very angry one, at that). The ring does resist removal, tied as it is to the user's will, but having his hand cut off, having it removed in his sleep or having his concentration/will disrupted can all enable the removal of the ring and leave him helpless. And, of course, the Guardians of the Universe, as they often remind him, can always strip him of the honor of being a Green Lantern, demanding the return of the weapon, cutting off his battery and even sending in other members of the Corps to bring him in (not to mention the Guardians own significant power). |
Reckless |
Hal Jordan likes to live on the edge, fly close to the flame. He's impulsive, brash, fearless. While these are all great skills to possess, he puts himself in danger more than need be and doesn't always know when to pull back. He usually thinks he can handle anything and, even if he doesn't, he's sure as hell gonna try. He doesn't always wait to figure out a good plan, just deciding to figure things out on the fly. While he has the potential to become a truly great leader, he hasn't developed that maturity yet, and remains something of a cocky maverick. |
Booze |
Hal likes to drink. He never does it knowingly in advance of flying or going on a mission, but sometimes he doesn't always have warning. He hits bars, picks up women, or just hangs out with the guys. He keeps beer in his house, along with whiskey and a few other party favors. If an emergency were to hit, while he can fight through most of it, there's still a chance he could wind up going into it a bit buzzed. While he can usually still handle it (usually), his constructs and reactions will be weaker. Plus, it never endears you to your fellow heroes if they smell whiskey on your breath, even if you just successfully fought off an alien invasion. |
Dark Side |
Hal can, on occasion, be that specific variety of American male jerk known as the douchebag. Entitled, smug, smarmy, condescending, a bit of a bully - Hal can be all these things on bad days. Not admirable qualities and he knows it. Not that guilt makes it better, it just means he feels even worse when he realizes it later. He's also got a dark side - brooding, prone to bad moods. He has a very hard time forgiving. For the most part, these aren't huge problems, but, allowed to fester, it could certainly grow into something bigger, especially in the face of massive tragedy, loss or failure. |
Responsibilities |
As a Green Lantern, Hal has a responsibility to the Corps. That doesn't just mean he can call them in - it means they can call him in, too. He has to leave Earth, sometimes for long periods of time, on occasion to help other parts of the universe in need. These absences can happen on very short notice and he doesn't usually have any choice but to go (not that he would - lives usually depend on his help). These absences, however, mean he might not be around to look after things that need protecting. It can also disrupt jobs, friendships, and general stability in his life. He actually lost an apartment once, just because he was gone and forgot to set up his rent getting paid. |

Confidante |
Reese and Hal may seem an unlikely pairing - no one knows better than they. Brought together by happenstance, the intergalactic warrior and the immortal healer have formed a quick and powerful bond with one another, one that's already been tested by demon attack, muggers and rental cars. More than friends, perhaps, but that, at least, for certain, they have a bond of mutual respect and appreciation. She's one of the few beings who knows Hal's dual identity. |
