Claim to Fame
About the closest Bobby has ever come to fame - outside that one incident - was graduating Magna Cum Laude from UCLA. He's known to his employers as a bright physicist, though not a genius by any means, and does pretty competent lab work.
Reputation
Bobby is a relative unknown outside his hometown in Ft. Washington, NY and his reputation there is a bit stained, for it was there that he was violently mugged with a childhood friend and subsequently nearly killed by a lynch mob. Outside that small place, though, he's just a young guy with a hard science degree and an easy smile who happens to be a mutant if you know enough to ask. Most don't.

Born to William and Madeline Drake in a small burgh just outside New York (so small it didn’t have a proper school), Robert “Bobby” Drake went undiagnosed as a latent mutant and grew up relatively normal except for a noted tendency to ‘run a bit cool’ whenever he had doctor’s appointments or checkups. His childhood was as normal as such things ever are in modern day America, a typical small town story of hanging out with friends, going to school and wishing to be a part of the wider world outside of the insular little world that all small towns are to one degree or another.
Bobby got his wish when he turned 18, his grades had earned him a place at UCLA. Excited and nervous the way all young men that age are, Bobby packed off to the big city. Once he got over the culture shock, the kid from Fort Washington found he fit in quite well amid the hustle and bustle of
the campus. It was perfect.
And so, it could not last.
At the end of the first year Bobby was home for the summer and visiting family and old friends. Even small towns have some problems and in an alley near the town diner, he and his childhood friend Judy Harmon were violently mugged. It might have gotten worse from there, but the sudden physical and emotional stress shocked his mutant nature uncontrollably to the fore, encasing their attacker in a block of ice. Judy was scared out of her wits. The mugger narrowly avoided freezing to death.
And then it did get worse. Tensions between man and mutant had always run kind of high under the surface in the little town and the incident was all it took them to bring them boiling violently to the surface. In under an hour a literal lynch mob had formed and broken into his house. It was only the providential arrival of the local sheriff with an actual honest to God posse that saved his life. Even then, the sheriff had to take him into protective custody.
News travels fast in the right circles and so when the Sheriff released Bobby two days later with quiet advice to get out of town quick and go back to LA, a representative from Xavier’s school was waiting for him. The offer was fairly simple, come spend some time at the school and learn how to be a bit more in control so this doesn’t happen again. Thoroughly rattled by the whole ordeal, he accepted.
He spent a total of eight weeks there. It was the middle of summer and most of the student population was away. At the end of that time he was offered a more permanent place there, but declined politely in favor of finishing his time at UCLA. He returned to California, buried himself in his studies and never went back to Fort Washington again… but he never forgot those who came to help him on the worst day of his life.
Three years later, after graduating with honors, he’d taken a job with an energy R and D corporation, there being a lot of application in the energy sector for an intimate knowledge of how energy, particularly thermal energy, flows from one place to another and what happens when things get hot or cold. Being back in the area has brought his memories of his time at Xavier’s flooding back. The thought’s been growing in the back of his mind that maybe he can give something back – help, teach, maybe even learn a bit more…

Character Details
Bobby is in most ways just a more mature version of his high school self. He still enjoys a beer with his friends, nights out on the town and having a good time just about as much as he did when he was girl watching at the diner with his friends Johnny and Pete. In fact one thing that hasn’t changed appreciably over the years is the fact that a cute face goes a very, very long way with him.
These days of course, it’s not quite the same. His experiences have given him a hard and wary edge and an icy temper that he didn’t have before. Upset him and he’s more than capable of giving your average Joe a very bad night. For all that though, mostly he’s still just whose always ready with a smile and hand to lend to whatever needs be done at the moment.
Cryogenesis |
Bobby can create dense, very durable ice by drawing from ambient sources of moisture, including moisture in the air. What is more he can shape his creations simply as an act of will and do so at some distance. Though the basic ability has really only one function - create and shape ice - the applications are limited really only by Bobby's imagination. Barriers, ramps, weaponry and such are all within the realm of possibility. This power can't create anything with moving parts, obviously. |
Thermal Regulation |
Bobby is able to regulate the temperature of his body with extreme precision. This has a few uses and effects. The most readily obvious is rendering him completely immune to extremes of cold. Dump him in Antarctica in his skivvies and he'll… well, he'll be uncomfortable but he won't freeze. Secondly, because lowering his body temperature (and he can take it all the way down to within a fraction of a degree of absolute zero) affects the air around him he can use himself as a giant energy sink. Making things cold or being very cold himself may have other uses to the imaginative mind. |
Icy Coating |
<A side effect of lowering his body temperature enough is that his body becomes covered in rime as water crystalizes out of the air around him. Depending on how much and how fast is temperature plummets this can coat him in either ice or snow. He can still move like this, though it makes an almighty racket as the ice cracks and refreezes around him. It’s possible with some tweaking and extra effort that this could be used either as armor and armament, but he’s never had occasion to try and the notion has only vaguely occurred to him before. |
Thermal Attunement |
Bobby is able to see differences in heat if he concentrates on them, effectively giving him thermal vision on demand. Unfortunately this is not a supernatural sense and can be foiled by anything that would defeat mechanical thermal vision. |
Evolving Abilities |
Bobby's X-Gene complex isn't yet fully expressed. As time progresses and he is exposed to more and more extreme stimuli (See 'Locked Power'), he will gain new abilities and new expressions of his existing ones. |
Magna Cum Laude |
Bobby graduated from UCLA with a Major in Physics (thermodynamics, specifically) and a minor in Sports Medicine. Though by no means a genius, he is a relatively intelligent man with a mind well trained in problem solving. Schooling aside he’s also got a few hobbies he's pretty good at – guitar, singing and mixology chief among them. |
Mildly Athletic |
Bobby works out some and plays sports (track and field in high school, ice skating and hockey since then, what else?). He's in better shape than your average Joe on the street but not in as good a shape as he could be if he devoted more time with it. He's also taken some basic self-defense classes (judo and escrima) and is a capable but not gifted hand to hand combatant. |
Prior Association |
Bobby was, briefly, brought to Xavier's school while he learned to control his incipient abilities. He left three years ago to finish his schooling and get his degree, but now being back in New York the thought of looking in on the people there has occurred to him. |
Almost Normal |
Bobby has a life, an apartment, a job, a car, a regular income, all the things you might expect a regular college graduate his age to have. Some might argue that these things tie him down and make him vulnerable, but having a normal life (well, nearly normal life) is a big deal sometimes. |
Quixotic |
While not given to literally tilting at windmills, Bobby does have a strong sence of right and wrong and is given to rushing to the defense of those who appear in need with perhaps less thought than might be warranted in some situations. He is, consequently, given to getting in a bit over his head and a canny opponent might manipulate him in this fashion. |
Romantic |
There is a part of Bobby that longs for a meaningful connection to someone else. You might call him a bit of a romantic at heart. He's not prone to skirt chasing. He's too polite for that, really, but he's most certainly a sucker for a pretty face or a lady in distress. It doesn't make him out and out stupid, but a woman can certainly find ways to override his usual good sense that a man could not. |
Locked Powers |
A quirk of Bobby's X-Gene complex has caused it to not fully manifest, which means, effectively, that Bobby has a fair chunk of his aberrant genetic potential locked away. To make matters worse, that potential won't ever express itself without extreme physiological and emotional stimuli. It literally takes extreme life or death situations when a very great deal is on the line. Alternately, the intervention of a sufficiently powerful psychic might trigger it, though odds are good that would also not be pleasant. |
People Suck |
Having an honest-to-God lynch mob come after you is a pretty damn frightening experience, especially after having been attacked by a mugger and acted in perfectly legitimate self-defense. Suddenly evincing the power to manipulate ice is frightening enough without the addition of being nearly killed for it. To say that this has colored his opinion of humanity at large is a bit of an understatement. There's a lot of resentment built up in Bobby about the way 'normals' treat mutants and he's always ready to assume the worst when the authorities or population at large clashes with mutants or mutant groups. The way this interacts with his hero complex is amusing at best and downright dangerous at worst. |
Snap Freeze |
Bobby is a pretty even guy most of the time. Everyone has a breaking point of course. That’s only human and to be fair Bobby’s breaking point is a lot further out than many peoples. Pass it though and he goes from cool to icy with almost no warning at all. |
Anchored Down |
The very fact that Bobby has a normal life can be used against him. He has attachments, employment, legal standing. All of that can be attacked by a sufficiently canny opponent, and the systems he’s integrated himself into turned against him. |
