Claim to Fame
Magneto was one of the most feared would-be world conquerors super-villains, and considered a terrorist by the governments of the civilized world. Nowadays Magneto has publicly renounced his war against humankind, but remains a "freedom fighter" and rabble-rouser, always quick to strike back, with overwhelming force, against those who would threaten mutants anywhere. His words, his writings and his deeds are used as a flag by many mutants that are angry at anti-mutant discrimination, and he has inspired a good number of mutant rebels and criminals, as well as a few heroes.
In fact, he has become part of the modern popular culture, much to his chagrin. There are even "Magneto Was Right" T-Shirts.
Reputation
Magneto is hated and feared by a large part of the population of the world due to his deeds during his would-be conqueror times. He is known to be responsible of the deaths of thousands of human beings. Most of them were soldiers, but he also caused the deaths of many innocent civilians that were caught in the crossfire.
World governments were terrified of him for a long time, and they are still pretty scared. There were and still are ‘Magneto Protocols’ in the military plans of most large nations. Yet few agencies are actively trying to hunt him down. Some dragons are better left sleeping, and in this electronic era Magneto is quite able to devastate a modern city in minutes.
For many mutants, however, Magneto is a hero. A true freedom fighter that made a stand in times when other powerful mutants were hiding, or being submissive and cowardly. Even many mutants that generally preach for peaceful coexistence respect him, because he has saved countless mutant lives and destroyed a good number of genocidal anti-mutant weapons. Yet some other mutants despise him, as his violent activities might have caused a good deal of backlash against the whole mutant race.
Biography
Born Max Eisenhardt in middle-class Jewish family, the boy that was to become Magneto knew persecution and injustice at an early age. He grew up in Germany during the rise of Nazism, which eventually led to have his family gunned down in front of him and Max spending his teenage years at a death camp.
Max survived. The things he had to do to survive haunt him even today, but he escaped in October 1944, taking with him a Gypsy girl called Magda he loved. They found refuge among Magda’s people, and lived around the Transia region of the Balkans, where she still had surviving family. They married and had a daughter, whom they named Anya.
But Max was not happy among the Gypsies. He wanted a better life for Magda and Anya, he wanted to renew his studies and become a scientist, as he had dreamed in his childhood. So he convinced Magda to settle in the Ukranian city ofVinnytsia, where he took the name of Erik Magnus Lehnsherr for the first time. Unfortunately an uncontrolled manifestation of his powers and the racism and greed of a local businessmen led him to be accused and detained just as the building where Magda and Anya lived was burning. Magda survived, but Max was unable to save his daughter, burned alive while he was being restrained. Overtaken by grief and rage, Max electrocuted a score people around him and swore bloody vengeance against the entire city. His powers and wrath, as well as her own grielf, drove Magda away, and by the time Max recovered his senses, he was alone.
Max didn’t actually wreck vengeance against the entire city. He could barely control his power and he wasn’t really that crazy. He fled, correctly assuming the police and the army would try to capture and kill him. For a while he tried to find Magda, but he failed.
Eventually a man called Erik Magnus migrated to the nascent state of Israel, he found a menial job at a hospital for victims of the death camps, while attending night courses at the local schools. There he met other camp survivors, and came in contact with the first Nazi hunters. When the Mossad began hunting Nazis, he was drawn out of his quiet life. He revealed his powers to some high-ranked members of the agency, and offered his services. For the next few years, under the codename ‘Magneto’ he worked as detective and assassin, hunting down and often killing former Nazis and assisting the Mossad and the CIA. He started a relationship with a fellow agent called Isabelle and began to rebuild his life. Unfortunately his zealousness was not appreciated. The Cold War was heating up and the Western powers wanted certain former Nazis working for them. After killing a scientist the CIA wanted alive, Erik become a target for assassination himself; he was a loose canon. The assassin failed to kill him, but he killed Isabelle. This betrayal and loss was the last straw.
Magneto vanished. He spent the next years travelling, looking for people like him. At one point he met a young American called Charles Xavier. It was Xavier who told him about human evolution and mutants for the first time. They became fast friends, and eventually revealed their powers to each other. But despite their close friendship, Erik found Xavier naive and unrealistic in many regards. Together they defeated Baron Von Strucker when he threatened some Holocaust survivors, looking for information about hidden Nazi gold. And after the battle, Erik left with the Nazi’s gold, promising Xavier he would use it for the good of mutantkind.
Erik invested the gold wisely, while continuing his travels, studying, meeting mutants, aiding them, and exploring the world. Eventually, his powers fully mastered, he began building weapons. Then he went to war.
Magneto’s declaration of war against humankind came as a surprise for the general public. Mutants were merely a rumor, a rumor that most world governments were keeping quiet as they conducted research (often using inhuman means) and recruited super-powerful soldiers or agents. Magneto appearance brought mutants into the light dramatically.
Back then Magneto was one of the most powerful superhumans ever reported. He destroyed entire armies, stole priceless research and high-tech equipment all over the world and even toppled a few tyrannical governments of fascist leanings he found intolerable. He seemed unstoppable.
But he wasn’t, a new generation of super-heroes was arising, and they were up to the challenge. Magneto was defeated for the first time at Cape Citadel, by the disciples of the man he still considered his best and truest friend, Charles Xavier. Mutants themselves, to add insult to the injury. While Magneto preached war against the human “oppressors”, Xavier started a movement for peaceful coexistence that divided the mutant population and turned a burgeoning racial war into a problem of public awareness and civil rights.
Many mutants chose to follow Magneto, and so the Mutant Brotherhood was formed. Magneto led a few of them into battles, hoping to turn the tide against the super-hero groups that were thwarting his plans, but it wasn’t enough. His recruits lacked the power, loyalty or the conviction to help him enough. Again and again, he faced defeat. He just wasn’t strong enough, smart enough. He even attempted to take over a small South American dictatorship no one cared about, to create a mutant haven. But even then he was defeated by the heroes.
His last gambit involved a volcano-creating machine of world-wide reach and a massive energy field that inhibited all super-powers but his own. His position was one of overwhelming advantage, and still a team of powerless mutants invaded his base and challenged him. They managed to cause irreparable damage to the volcano machine, and in his rage Magneto almost killed a helpless underage mutant girl. Shocked by his own actions, he abandoned his base and his plan. He had gone too far, he realized, and become what he despised.
By then most of his arsenal was exhausted, and most of his bases destroyed. Decades of work turned to dust. There were also many powerful super-heroes and groups of super-humans, able to fight him. Magneto was no longer the most powerful man of the world, if he ever was.
And yet, not all was bleak-looking. For a long time he believed himself the paragon of mutants, the most powerful example of his race. But he had been wrong. Some young mutants showed power rivalling his own, with only his decades of experience giving him the advantage. A few were even stronger, those Omega mutants showed the potential for virtually limitless power. If only they managed to survive a few decades, mutantkind would be invincible.
And so Magneto changed tactics. He publicly renounced war against humankind (which has caused a split within the Brotherhood) while at the same time encouraging mutants worldwide to fight for their rights and protect their peers. His last few appearances have been narrow strikes against agencies and companies experimenting on mutants or restraining mutants unlawfully. Given the super-heroes no good reason to oppose him, he has again proven to be almost unstoppable.

Character Details
Magneto is an old man that has led a hard, bitter life. Possessed of an unusual strong will and drive, he has managed to survive events that would have destroyed a lesser man a hundred times over, but he carries the scars in his body and his psyche.
Magneto is pragmatic, merciless, ruthless and usually pessimistic. He has no faith in humankind 'innate goodness' and for that matter he has little faith in mutantkind 'innate goodness' either. He usually assumes the worst and is pleasantly surprised when things are not going as bad as he suspected. Unfortunately it doesn't happen often, so he remains an ornery old man (in the body of a middle-aged man). He has little sense of humor, and leans towards bitter sarcasm when he shows any.
Despite his failings, Magneto also has many laudable traits. He is brilliant, wise and extremely hard-working. He is courageous without being foolhardy, and he never gives up or surrenders while he can draw another breath. He is protective of his charges, which includes all mutantkind right now. He is also patient, cool-headed and understanding, except when he is going through a manic phase (see flaws).
He is also somewhat old-fashioned, since he is a man born early in the 20th century. Sometimes the habits of younger generations baffle him. But those who think he wouldn't understand modern technology are very mistaken, he was designing and building extremely advanced computers when Bill Gates was in diapers. He loves science and technology and keeps up to date in most fields.
Magnetism |
Magneto is a mutant with psychic powers. Technically speaking, he is a focused electrokinetic, a man with the ability to create and manipulate magnetic fields.
But with almost 70 years of experience and his strong grasp of the physics behind his powers, Magneto has pushed the limits of his ability to levels unimaginable to younger mutants, and he has learn to tap the Earth magnetic field to vastly increase the strength and range his powers.
Magneto's power to create and control magnetic fields makes him able to affect vast mounts of ferromagnetic matter. Magneto can move hundreds of tons of iron and steel, at his best he can lift a warship and dissemble it on the air (there are other ferromagnetic materials, but they are uncommon). When dealing with paramagnetic or diamagnetic materials, Magneto is much weaker, able to exert between 1 and 0.01 percent of the physical force he can exert on iron and steel. This means he is still able to move tens of tons of materials like water, silver, aluminium or stone (or steel in a non-ferromagnetic molecular configuration - it can be done), and perhaps a few hundred pounds of plastic or hydrogen.
By affecting himself (or the steel armor he wears) with magnetism, Magneto can fly at supersonic speed, and can reach Earth orbit with ease.
Matter is not the only thing susceptible to Magnetism. Electricity is easy to control and redirect, and can be generated by quickly shifting magnetic fields. Magneto can create electricity and he is skilled enough to be able to use it to generate enough stable power to provide energy to a small city (or to a doomsday device, for that matter). He is also able to create very powerful electromagnetic pulses that will destroy unshielded electronics in hundreds of miles around him (shielded electronics are generally safe, unless they are within a few hundred feet of him). |
Force Fields |
Magneto is able to create powerful 'forcefields' by creating a dense magnetic energy field for relatively small thickness. Those fields, usually shaped as spheroids, are virtually impenetrable when attacked with objects or energies easily affected by magnetism. Iron, steel, other ferromagnetic matter, electricity, electromagnetic energy (including heat, radiation, lasers, etc) and charged particles (including plasma) are easily affected and deflected by the forcefield unless come at him with ungodly force.
In one very famous and spectacular display of power, Magneto detonated a small nuclear weapon he had stolen within yards of himself, destroying a flight of USAF planes attacking him. He emerged of the explosion apparently unscathed. Radiation, plasma and heat are all subject to his powers, and since it was a high-attitude detonation he didn't need to worry about debris. (It is still not the kind of stunt he would like to repeat often, among other things he was half-deaf for weeks).
Other kinds of matter and energy will find the shield still very resistant, but not unbreakable. However, electromagnetism being one of the building blocks of the universe, there are virtually no kind of energy or matter it can't affect to some degree. Even pure psionic powers are somewhat affected and weakened by the kind of energy fields Magneto can create.
Despite its toughness, Magneto's field has fallen in the past when faced with strong super-humans using attacks like pure force beams, magical weapons of non-ferrous materials or just fists backed by great physical strength. The field is also weaker if Magneto is shielding a large area than just himself. |
Uniform Field |
For now almost two centuries physicist have been trying to explain the so-called fundamental forces of the universe as a single field with different manifestations. In fact, Electricity and Magnetism were 'unified' long ago.
For Magneto it is not a theory, he is well aware all fundamental forces are aspects of the same field. Still, manifesting other fields is not easy to him, requiring much more effort and concentration than just using magnetism. He is indeed able to generate high intensity electromagnetic radiation and strong gravity fields. He can, for instance, levitate a large truck altering gravity. Or melting it, affecting its atomic structure directly.
But such displays of power are much harder than just using magnetism. For instance it takes him roughly 10,000 more energy to levitate something with gravitational field instead of a magnetic one. Also, he has far less control, because he lacks practice, and his senses are not attuned to gravity as they are attuned to electromagnetism.
Such displays are not worth the effort in a real battle, unless he is trying to surprise an enemy or making a point. It is occasionally useful for research and utility, and perhaps for shock effect. |
Magnetic Senses |
Magneto is extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. In fact, he is able to detect them and objects that interact with them all around him. This gives him a form of sixth sense, a crude radar-like feel. Almost everything has a magnetic field, even human beings. Although most objects (and human beings) are so weakly magnetic that they are 'transparent' to his senses unless they are very close to him (about 10 yards for a human).
But powerful magnetic fields are easily detected. Magneto can feel the generators of hydroelectric plant a hundred miles away, for instance. Domestic electric power lines are detected all around him for a hundred of yards or so. He can feel the electromagnetic pulse of an atomic explosion anywhere within the Earth magnetosphere.
He can also feel iron and steel around him, as they interact strongly with magnetic fields. He has a variant of x-ray vision with regards to ferromagnetic substances, which if he concentrates he can 'see' floating in a world of transparent or invisible matter. |
Enhanced Physiology |
Although Magneto's powers are mostly psychic in nature, his mutation includes physical adaptations that make him better at channelling magnetic energy. His body is highly resistant to electrical discharges and can easily shrug off shocks that would kill a normal man. His nervous system is very efficient, and his reflexes and reaction time are startling for a man of his age, although still within human limits.
One of the most remarkable aspects of his physiology is that he is rejuvenated and energized by his interaction with the Earth magnetic field. He managed to form a strong link with Earth's magnetosphere roughly 60 years ago, which he has rarely broken. It slightly enhances his stamina and vigor, and more importantly, it has greatly retarded his aging. Magneto looks like a fit man in his mid 40s, instead the nonagenarian he is, and chances are good he will live another 100 or 150 years if he is not killed by violence first. |
Science |
If young Max Eisenhardt had been a normal human boy in country not in the grip of racism, he would have become a scientist on par with the likes of Niels Bohr or Enrico Fermi. He has a rare combination of intuitive genius (somewhat helped by his powers), mathematical ability, intense curiosity and boundless determination. Magneto particular interests are physics and human genetics, and in both areas he is among the best scientists in the world, although his discoveries have been shared only with a select few, usually other mutants, and are slow to reach mainstream science. |
Technology |
No mere theorist, Magneto is a brilliant engineer with a broad knowledge of all kinds of machines, from aircraft to computers and many decades of experience building an improving all kinds of devices. He has also studied alien machines, such as genetic engineering devices designed by Deviants and Inhumans, and alien craft crashed on Earth, and managed to incorporate some of the technology to his designs. His mastery is such that he can use his powers to assemble complex machines from spare parts in a few minutes, or even from raw materials, taking a few hours if he has memorized the designs, which he often does. |
Leadership |
Magneto was, for decades, the undisputed leader of a mutant support network (considered a terrorist group in many countries) called the Mutant Brotherhood. He was a good strategist, but not a good field leader, as he ended up trying to do everything himself (and usually he could do it) so he stopped leading mutant teams into the battlefield years ago.
Some old Brotherhood members will doubtlessly still un-fondly remember how he alternatively shifted quickly in behavior from using them as chess pieces, to over-protect them, to berate them like an evil marine sergeant for not being as competent as he was in the use of their mutant powers.
Where Magneto truly shines is as a long term strategist and organizer. He is very good at long term planning and backup contingencies. He is also very good at public speaking (which can degenerate into pretty scary ranting if he is going through a manic episode). |
Fighting |
Magneto is a competent hand-to-hand fighter, also with some experience with modern weaponry. He exercises daily and goes through training simulators a few times a month to keep his body fit and his skills sharp. He wouldn’t be able to defeat an accomplished martial artist without his powers, but he can easily handle a few thugs in a street brawl or a rookie SHIELD agent. |
Investigator |
For most of his life Magneto has been a hunter and a detective. When he is not in the lab, he is usually following leads and investigating events. He became a very competent detective in his time as Nazi hunter, and he kept those skills and improved them by searching for mutants when mutants were very rare and into hiding. Nowadays he has turned his razor-sharp investigation skills to track down anti-mutant groups and criminals that prey on mutants. He knows very well all steps of his work, from rumor-gathering in Internet or seedy bars, to lab work using the latest techniques developed by the FBI and SHIELD, to mercilessly extracting information from hostile prisoners. Magneto is also very good at reading people. He has mastered understanding micro-expressions, and it is very hard to deceive him. |
Languages |
Magneto knows many. His native languages are Yiddish and German, but he can speak Polish, Russian, Hebrew, English and Romany like a native. He is also fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, classical Latin and Greek, but retains some central European accent. |
Genius |
Magneto is very intelligent. Without doubt among the most brilliant beings in the world. He has mastered a dozen sciences in his long life and made extraordinary advances in the areas of genetics, physics and electronics. He is both quick-thinking and creative, with an excellent memory and an extraordinary gift for mathematics. |
Willpower |
Magneto is justly famous for his fanatic drive and implacable will. He has gone through events that would have destroyed lesser men, and come up stronger than before. It is almost impossible to scare him or make him back down. He is very self-confident, although also very stubborn. His mental fortitude and discipline are such that he can shrug off telepathic attacks that would kill a normal human beings and psychic attempts to alter his perceptions and ideas are often completely unsuccessful. |
Reputation |
Although Magneto is considered a super-villain by most of the world, for many mutants he is a hero, sometimes he is even a messianic, legendary figure. He still has many followers, and many cells of the Mutant Brotherhood will do what he tells them, no questions asked. |
Resources |
A long time ago Magneto 'liberated' a large amount of Nazi gold. He invested some of the wealth wisely, and used the rest to purchase properties and tech, bribe government officers in a dozen countries and found some experiments. Most of his secret bases and inventions require a good deal of founding.
Most of that gold is long gone. And so are most of Magneto's secret bases and doomsday devices. But Magnus was prudent and kept some reserves. He is still a millionaire, and he still has a few hideouts all over the world. Those who think he ran out of WMDs and crazy inventions and that was why he gave up fighting are sadly wrong. He renounced to war for ideological reason, not because he is out of weapons or plans. |
Armor |
When he knows he will go to battle, Magneto wears steel chain mail armor on purple and red colors. This armor has been shaped by his own powers and reacts to his thoughts very quickly, following his own motions to provide maximum flexibility and ease of movement while remaining has hard as the finest steel.
Outside battle Magneto usually wears outfits reinforced with fine steel mess, which are bullet-proof and can be hardened by his powers. He can also reconfigure them into looking like his real armor, although they aren't as tough as the real deal, being thinner.
Magneto can also build an amor in a few seconds if there is iron or steel nearby. This improvised armor can be quite resistant, but won't be as flexible as his regular one. |
Helmet |
Magneto's Corintian-style helmet is one of his most remarkable inventions. The circuitry configuration inside the helmet is designed to specifically disrupt psychic projections. It makes his mind unreadable through telepathy, making thoughts and emotions impossible to be manipulated and protects him from psychic possession and control. It also offers excellent protection from psychic attacks, although very strong assaults at close range still can cause some damage.
Magneto can control the functions of the helmet with his powers and can make it transparent to determined psychic wavelengths, allowing telepathic communication with allied telepaths.
Incidentally, Magneto has lost a helmet or two in the battlefield. And now there are rumors about blueprints of his anti-telepathic circuitry are now in the Internet, posted there by helpful citizens that distrust telepaths. But this might be an urban legend. |
Bipolar |
Magneto suffers a mild case of bipolar disorder that is actually physiological in nature and related to his mutant powers, but worsened by his experiences during his adolescence (still suffering PTSD after 70 years). It doesn't quite follow normal human manic-depressive cycles and resists conventional medication.
Magneto goes through mania episodes where he is highly creative, aggressive and rather dangerous, most of his most amazing inventions have been devised during sleepless nights of manic phases. Mania phases are followed by periods when he is relatively passive, somewhat brooding and much more willing to talk and listen to others. During the lows Magneto is actually a fairly normal person, and often seeks the company of his peers out of loneliness, yet he seems unable to access the levels of power he has been reported using during his manic phases. |
Connected With The Magnetosphe |
Sixty years ago Magneto learned how to tap into the Earth's magnetic field to increase his mutant powers. However, it involves also becoming deeply interconnected to the field, and he will feel any disruption to it. Strong disruptions are painful, even incapacitating. This also means his power is also greatly dismissed outside Earth's magnetic field, or if he willingly (it takes a few hours) or unwillingly breaks the connection. He can also connect/disconnect to the fields of other planets, but it takes hours of study and meditation.
Without his connection to the magnetosphere Magneto's power is cut to a 10% of normal, and his forcefield is also likewise weakened. Moreover the optimal range of his power becomes around 100 yards, losing about half its strength for each 100 yards further away. |
Wanted Criminal |
Magneto has committed numerous crimes all over the world and he is considered a criminal by almost all civilized nations. Although he has renounced to his war on humankind, he was rarely acknowledged as representative of any 'mutant nation' and therefore he wasn't considered a soldier, but a terrorist. As a consequence he is unable to do many things normal people can do, like settling anywhere in the civilized world, owning property using his true name or even walking down the street without risking being recognized and causing panic. He has to watch his back constantly for law-enforcement agents and assassins hunting him down. Many agencies and nations won't risk antagonizing him openly, but almost all of those would also be happy to see him gone for good. |
Enemies |
During the years of war with humankind Magneto managed to earn the ire of many people. Some are merely normal men and women that lost loved ones to his crusade. Some are politicians and military men that saw their careers damaged or ruined by his activities. Some are criminals, even super-powered criminals, that saw their plans and business ruined because they interfered with mutant affairs.
Magneto has a particular dislike of anything he sees as racist or neo-nazi, so organizations like Hydra or the Sons of the Serpent have seen him coming down on their gatherings and business like an angry godling many times, even when there were no mutant endangered at all, and would love to see him dead.
And there are also those superhuman good-doers that believe he should be in jail, of course. |

Notes
Magneto beliefs about Mutantkind
The following information is what Magneto believes, information based on his research, and made available to selected members of the Brotherhood and also to Xavier (and through Xavier perhaps to some X-Men). This should not be ICly taken as completely accurate or OOCly canon.
Magneto believes mutants are part of the evolution processes of humankind. But he doesn’t believe this is a Darwinian natural selection process as most super-powers make no sense within Darwin evolution theories. He believes primitive humans (roughly a million years ago) were genetically engineering towards an evolutionary jump that would turn the homo sapiens into a superior, super-powered species. He has no hard evidence of this, but he has studied the teachings and devices of other branches of humankind and some alien documents that mention genetic experiments by space gods on primitive species of many worlds leading to unexpected evolutionary jumps.
Magneto estimates total number of ‘active’ mutants in around 5 million worldwide as per 2014. This means a 0.014% of mainstream humankind (and around 228,000 in the US alone!). He has no enough data about the number of mutants among parallel branches of humankind, but he knows there are some super-powered mutants among the Homo Mermanus (commonly known as the Atlantes) and detected latent mutants among divergent human branches in the Savage Land. Therefore he expects the percentages will hold in the entire Homo genus.
Magneto also estimates the number of mutants doubles every five years. It has definitely multiplied by 100 in the last 30-35 years. He expects mutants outnumber humans within a century.
However, not all mutants have potent super-powers. In fact, what Magneto classifies as Alpha Class, those mutants that have powerful abilities and normal human aspect, are slightly less than 0.5% of all mutants, only 20,000 worldwide (about 1,000 in the USA). About half the mutants are Beta Class, possessing minor super-human powers and still looking human.
About twice as numerous as the alphas are the Gamma Class mutants, who posses powerful abilities but also serious drawbacks or inhuman appearance. Finally Magneto classifies as Delta Class the mutants that have inhuman appearance and minor powers. These mutants, Gamma and Delta, draw the bulk of anti-mutant discrimination because they are obvious mutants and sometimes have uncontrolled and dangerous powers or are insane. World governments, however, fear more the hard-to-identify alphas, which often try to live normal, anonymous lives despite their earth-shaking powers.
Around the time Magneto decided to abandon his war with humankind, and one of the reasons why he did it, he identified a fifth kind of mutant: the Omega Class. Omegas are extremely rare, numbering perhaps a score worldwide as for 2014. They are mutants so powerful that they are potentially god-like, and rival in raw power with beings such as Thor, Hulk or Sentry. Magneto believes that an omega in full control of his or her abilities would be several orders of magnitude stronger than himself.
Magneto doesn’t consider himself (or Charles Xavier) omega class. Five years ago he thought mutants like Xavier and himself were the pinnacle of mutant power, now he believes he was mistaken and that one of his tasks is to protect and train the omegas so they can lead mutantkind to their destiny.
Finally there are latent mutants. People where the X-Factor remained dormant. Most mutant abilities manifest during adolescence because they are tied-up to physical maturity. But many times this link doesn’t exist or is imperfect, and the powers could manifest at birth, as response to mutagen factors (just like happens with metahumans) or not at all. The last case is extremely common and Magneto suspects latent mutants outnumber ‘active’ mutants by a factor of at least 3, and maybe as much as 10. The number of latents is of key importance to understand human/mutant genetics, latent mutants often have active children, while among purely human parents active children are infrequent (but still possible). Also, most times active mutants have active mutant children, but occasionally they are latents. Magneto scoffs at the idea two mutants could have a normal human child, but knows mutant/human pairings could.
Experiments with latent mutants (most of which were performed in the Savage Land) have led Magneto to conclude that they can become active through genetic manipulation and specific triggering mechanisms, but with his current technology and knowledge it takes him several months of study and work to activate one. For him it is not worth the effort in most cases._
Magneto in Numbers
Magnetism and Forcefields. Magnetic power to manipulate matter as well as defense offered by forcefield.
- Ferromagnetic matter (ex: iron, steel) as well as electromagnetic forces and charged particles (ex: radiation, fire, lightning) 14
This would be Magneto at his best. You don’t want to fight him in a scrapyard. Robots have it really raw against him.
- Normal materials (ex: flesh, lead, water) and other most other forces (ex: gravity, cosmic energy) 12
This is level would be the typical level of performance for Magneto. Dangerous even to groups of younger alpha mutants, able to challenge gods like Thor
- Materials that have very low magnetic susceptibility (ex: air, some plastics) 4
This would be the minimum strength against really weird materials, probably designed specifically against him. 5-11 is also possible and negotiable if forewarning is given.
- Flight speed is 13, Magneto can reach orbit and even fly to the moon
Uniform field
- Generation of raw electricity: 11
- Generation of electromagnetic waves (ex: heat) and gravitational fields: 9
- Molecular and atomic re-arrangement through manipulation of the weak and strong forces: <1
Enhanced Physiology
- Resistance to electrical shocks 10
- Reflexes 6, Stamina 5, most other physical traits at 4
Mental traits
Skills
- Electronics 6
- Mutant biology and genetics 6
- General physics, human genetics, math, computer sciences 5
- Related sciences such as biology, chemistry, etc. 4
- Technology and engineering 5
- Leadership & Tactics 3
- Strategy & Politics 5
Flaws
If disconnected from Earth’s magnetic field, Magneto’s powers are weakened:
- Power over ferromagnetic and electromagnetic forces is reduced to 12
- Power over most materials/forces becomes 10
- Materials with very low magnetic susceptibility can’t be affected
- Generation of raw electricity lowered to level 8
- Generation of electromagnetic waves to about 6
- Gravity can’t be altered at any noticeable degree
- Flight speed is 9, just under the speed of sound
Gear
- Optimal armor would give Magneto defense level 7. Lighter armor would be 6. Backed by his powers the armors are hardened to about 12.
- The helmet provides level 13 defense against all uses of telepathy
