Reputation
Mimic is a well known, gay mutant hero. He showed up out of nowhere a couple of years ago then came out and out in Out magazine six months later.
Calvin Rankin is a little known author of a novel featuring a mutant FBI agent.
Biography
Sometimes it feels like the world just has it in for you from day one. Dirt poor, dead mother, dejected, bitter father for whom you can never do anything right. You never had a chance, tou're never given a chance, and you know you'll never get a chance. The solution? Take what you want when you want it. Mostly that took the form of petty crime. And then Calvin's mutant powers manifested when he found himself close to five, unusual teenagers. He could feel their powers rushing into him though he wasn't quite certain what was happening. It was an awesome high and he didn't let them get out of sight for hours. Eventually, he couldn't follow them any more but by that time, he didn't need to. The extended contact had let him store the powers of all five and he realized what he was: a mutant. Now he could really take what he wanted.
Joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants was an obvious decision. Unfortunately, their first mission was a failure and they abandoned him when he fell against the X-Men. Seems that even as a mutant, the world had it in for him. He was languishing in prison, when the world just had to twist the knife some more and he received a visit from Professor Xavier, the mentor of the X-Men. And then the world turned upside down. He was offered a chance to get out of jail and to attend the school. It was a chance doomed to failure of course. He knew it. But it would get him out of prison. What the hell. Yes.
To his surprise, he found acceptance and friends instead of enemies. He grew skilled and confident and led the team. And in a world with no real anti-mutant prejudice, a world where superheroes were given the fame and acclaim usually bestowed upon royalty, he thrived as did all the X-Men. Many more mutants joined ovr the years and they weren't just a team, they were family. He even found romance with the Avengers' Wonder Man. He knew what happiness was.
Until the day he was unhinged from time and yanked from his reality. The multiverse was breaking, he was told. Individual realities needed to be fixed before the accumulated effect destroyed all of creation. Whether he liked it or not - and he didn't - he had a new team and they were sent off to fix things one reality at a time. And they did. They became friends. Mostly. But he wasn't happy. He had a life. A great life. His reality was practically idyllic compared to the ones the others came from and all he wanted was to return home.
They traveled from reality to reality, doing what they were told in order to fix the multiverse. As things are wont to do when dealing with multiple realities and evil villains, Cal was seriously injured to the point where his healing factor was barely keeping him alive. One of the Exiles, another mutant from a different reality than Cal's, knew of a mutant training with the X-Men in his own reality with remarkable healing powers so they took him there. Though Calvin was healed physically, being among the X-Men again - even ones not of his own reality - wounded his heart almost as badly as his body was hurt and his friends could see that. They convinced him to stay instead of continuing on as an Exile with the promise that they would come get him if there was ever an emergency they needed his help with.
He made a home on Earth-626 for a number of years and then, as promised, the Exiles came to get him when they needed his help. Once the mission was accomplished, he returned home to discover that although almost two years passed for him, it was only three months on 626.

Character Details
Simply put, Cal is a white hat. Despite his rough start, once he realized that he could stop being a victim any time he chose to, he chose to be a hero instead. His home reality's near reverence of superheroes just reinforced that. This also translates into how he deals with people, especially students at the school. He's generally patient and tries to encourage them to be their best.
Mimicry |
Mimic is a mutant whose power lets him duplicate the powers of others though at only half the effectiveness of the original. They must be either mutants or mutates, someone who was either born with or somehow developed powers on a genetic level. He is unable to mimic technology such as cybernetics or armor, true magical ability or knowledge that is a result of learning and skill or enhanced abilities that are a result of training. Similarly, aliens and gods are also impossible to mimic unless they are mutants as well and then only the additional powers will be mimiced. He can instantly mimic someone so long as they're within 100 meters of him but the powers will fade if they become separated. Only if Cal spends an hour with the person can he retain their powers. Someone's powers can be stored permanently but he is limited to a maximum of five power sets. In order to mimic someone new, he has to fully 'release' someone's powers and will be unable to call on them again without another hour's exposure. Occasionally, something from a power set that he's used for a long time might stick with him even after he's released those powers but it's not something he can control. |
|
Power Detection |
Calvin's power to mimic someone else's powers is automatic and he had to learn how not to unless he deliberately wants to. That means that if he's in range to mimic them he's also in range to 'feel' their presence sort of 'pushing' at him. He can't identify what the powers are without mimicing them nor does any power set have a distinctive 'feel' to it so he can't say if he's encountered it before but he can tell if someone has powers that he's able to mimic so long as he has a slot free. (If OOC consent is not given, it can be assumed that he's not paying close enough attention or has an undefined fifth power set at the moment.) |
|
Fifth Slot |
Cal is able to mimic five other people at once though he tends to keep the same four most of the time. The fifth is a bit more fluid as he sometimes needs to mimic someone during a fight. Just leaving it unused though means he's not using his full abilities which is not just unwise but can be dangerous. Accordingly, he usually has Cyclops' power mimiced since even if he drops it, he can normally ICly reacquire it within a day of whenever it was ICly dropped. |
|
Enhanced Reflexes (Wolverine) |
Cal is much more agile than normal humans due to mimicing Wolverine's primal nature. Even at half strength, he can easily match and even exceed those of Olympic athletes and other peak performances by normal humans. |
|
Enhanced Senses (Wolverine) |
Though not as keen as Wolverine's, Cal's senses are augmented way past normal human level. He can see clearly with very limited lighting, identify people by scent and hear beyond the range of a normal human. |
|
Enhanced Strength (Wolverine / Colossus) |
At the peak of human strength through training and mutation, it's when he turns into metal that his strength becomes phenomenal. |
|
Enhanced Toughness (Colossus) |
Turning into metal? It makes you really hard to hurt. There's no question that Colossus does it better but it still keeps him unharmed against many weapons and opponents he's likely to face. |
|
Flight (Phoenix) |
By using the telekinesis he's mimiced from Phoenix, Mimic is able to fly unassisted solely with the power of his mind. He can do this when he's in either flesh or armored form but in either case, his weight (greater when armored) will affect his use of telekinesis to lift or move other things as well. |
|
Mind Shield (Charles Xavier - Permanent / Colossus / Phoenix) |
Due to the 'leftover' power from mimicing Professor X, Cal has a permanent basic mind shield even when he's not mimicing a telepath. However, this becomes irrelevant when he's transformed into the metal form he mimiced from Colossus as he is completely shielded from telepathy for reasons he's never been able to explain. This applies to both receiving and projecting thoughts and includes himself if he's mimicing a telepath. Since he's currently mimicing Phoenix, when he's not in metal form, he's able to give both himself and others telepathic protection. |
|
Optic Blasts (Cyclops) |
Like Cyclops, Mimic can fire blasts of ruby concussive energy from his eyes. Though it's energy, it gives off no heat and is purely physical energy. Since he never experienced the head trauma that Scott Summers did, he can control the power at will and doesn't require a visor. The downside to not wearing a visor though is that he doesn't have the fine tuning that it gives Cyclops. Also, similar to Cyclops, he is partially (half) immune to all the Summers' brothers powers. |
|
Organic Steel Form (Colossus) |
Mimic can transform his body into a form of organic steel. This makes him super strong and super tough. While transformed, he has no need to eat, drink or breathe and can withstand extreme temperatures though he can only stay transformed for a week at most. He's also able to exert himself at peak efficiency but will tire after a couple days of that level of exertion. |
|
Regeneration (Wolverine) |
Foremost of the abilities that mimicing Wolverine gives Cal is his healing factor. He has a remarkable resistance to all but the strongest diseases, drugs and poisons and injuries that would kill someone else heal swiftly. This also slows down the aging process. |
|
Retractable Claws (Wolverine) |
The most notorious benefit of mimicing Wolverine's powers are the claws that spring forth from the backs of his hands. They are strong, sharp and deadly even lacking the adamantium coating that Cal can't mimic. Of course, that changes when he uses Colossus' ability to turn to metal. |
|
Telekinesis (Phoenix) |
Mimicing Phoenix makes Cal a telekinetic. He can use this ability to fly, create physical shields either around himself or at range, produce concussive blasts of raw teleinetic force to use offensively and manipulate objects psionically on a macro (but not micro) scale. |
|
Telepathy (Charles Xavier - Permanent / Phoenix) |
Back when he was leading the X-Men in his home reality, Cal would often mimic the powers of both Jean Grey and Professor Xavier. Even when he no longer has them 'stored', he retains some basic telepathic abilities though he rarely uses them consciously. He might pick up a stray thought or two or just gain a very basic mental impression of the person which he'd put down to 'gut evaluation'. He is also able to tell if someone is trying to enter or tamper with his mind. This is permanent. However, since he's mimicing Phoenix, he's a full fledged telepath with the full spectrum of abilities when not in metal form. He is capable of receiving and projecting thoughts into the minds of other people and higher intelligence animals. He can choose to target any number of people or broadcast to anyone in range. The thoughts of others are also beacons and can be used to detect their presence. Not as powerful as the ones he mimics, his range is only about 50 miles which also affects his astral projection. He can cloak his own thoughts and those near him so they can't be detected by less powerful psychics or shield himself and others to provide a defense against telepathic eavesdropping or assault. While he can influence the minds of others, his control is limited to 'suggestions' such as 'these people aren't important' and 'I'm feeling hungry.' Most targets have no reason to believe these suggestions aren't their own thoughts so are likely to act on them unless there's a good reason not to. It's highly unlikely one would ever do something not in his own interest or harm himself (unless perhaps depressed or suicidal to begin with). As for offense, while they do no physical damage, his psychic blasts can stun, cause pain to, or render unconscious an unprotected mind or one he's able to overcome. |
|
Teleportation - Bio-Molecular Spatial Displacement (Blink) |
Like Blink, whom he has mimiced, Cal can displace matter through rifts, effectively teleportating himself, others or things from his location to somewhere else. These take the appearance of holes in space which blink in then out, taking whatever was with it. The hole can be very large, taking multiple people or something as large as a tank. Alternatively, there can be multiple smaller holes taking just select people simultaneously without them needing to be close to each other thus, for instance, leaving behind an enemy that was between them. While Blink can teleport to the moon if she wanted, Cal doesn't have that kind of range. He's limited to merely teleporting to anywhere on the planet. Unlike Blink, his range is affected by the amount of mass he teleports at once. The more mass, the shorter the distance he's capable of teleporting in a single blink. Further, rapid fire blinks with a lot of mass is extremely exhausting to him. He's also capable of using javelin-like energy to teleport something or someone away but the same limitations apply. Further, unlike Blink, Cal's teleportation is an all or nothing affair. He can't selectively remove body parts, for instance, as Blink could though he is still capable of blinking someone out of restraints unless they have somehow been fused to the prisoner's body. This makes him unable to use teleportation as a weapon in a way other than sending someone to a hostile destination. |
|
Combat |
Cal is a very skilled fighter, having trained with some of the best hand to hand fighters in several universes starting with his time with the X-Men and continuing during his time with the Exiles, While capable of more sophisticated martial arts, he tends to favor a a brute force punch and slash method. Unsurprising, all things considered. |
|
Languages |
As a member of the X-Men, he learned (often with telepathic assistance when he was mimicing one) a number of the more common languages that he might need in the course of his duties and that his friends speak. These include French, German, Russian and Spanish. He's also recently picked up Latin although it's the dialect as spoken in Nova Roma. |
|
Leadership |
In his home reality, Cal was the leader of the X-Men. He's trained in both strategy and tactics for both individuals and groups. He's also a fairly accomplished diplomat as leading the X-Men was often similar to trying to herd cats. |
|
Piloting |
His time with the X-Men on Earth-12 taught him to drive and pilot many vehicles that the team used. |
|
Singing |
What would be a surprise to many - those who actually find out - Cal's a very talented singer. |
|
Reality Traveler |
Cal has been to lots of different realities, both good and bad. Mostly bad. They're not in the future and none of them are destined to happen in any other reality. However, in many cases, he knows or at least has an idea of what happened to trigger things. Similar to a psychic who sees not the future but many possible futures, he has an idea of what might turn out to be a Really Bad Idea and use that to guide his actions. |
|
Xavier's & the X-Men |
Just how big an advantage Charles Xavier, the school and the X-Men confer to someone can't possibly be calculated. They're not just team mates, they're not just friends, they're family. A powerful family with many resources, high technology, and an extended support system. |
|
Reality Hopping Buttinski |
Cal has been to lots of different realities, both good and bad. Mostly bad. He's interacted with lots of super powered people and aliens during his time with the Exiles. Fixing realities was a hard, dangerous and often dirty job and many people appreciated their efforts to help them. Many did not. Most are stuck in their home reality but some possess the knowledge and ability to leave if they wanted to and don't look kindly on the Exiles' interference. And less dire but potentially inconvenient is the Panoptichron. Its computers know where he is and he did insist that they let him know if they ever need his help. |
|
Stranger In A Strange Land |
This isn't Cal's home reality. There are both big and little things that throw him off balance. Even being here a few years, doesn't really make up for a former lifetime of knowing different people, a different history, a different reality. Some things are just absorbed while growing up. |
|
Gamma Radiation |
To most people, gamma radiation is deadly and Cal is no exception. However his reaction to it is extreme and potentially deadly. If he is within 100 meters of any unshielded source of gamma rays, he becomes violently ill and the severity is directly proportional to how close he is. This applies even to people and creatures that have been mutated by gamma rays such as the Hulk and She-Hulk. Note that he can still mimic their abilities but that doesn't confer immunity. |

A note about canon.
I'm using almost all of it for this character with only a few changes. So if anyone has a reason to know him from his Exile days or even his Earth-12 days, here are the differences:
1) Cal was in a relationship with his reality's version of Wonder Man.
2) He and Blink were only the best of friends and never romantic towards each other.
3) He mimiced a few different powers than the ones he used for much of the series.
4) His time with the Exiles ended in issue #68. He never mimiced Deadpool. Instead, Beak told the Exiles of a mutant healer who could probably heal Cal. They took him to that reality* and after being healed, Cal ended up staying.
*That reality is the game reality. If anyone wants to play Beak or Elixir or even an OC mutant healer this can be worked into their BG if they like.
