Claim to Fame

As far as most people know, Lorna's nothing more than a geophysicist with an interesting hair colour. Few people know she's also Polaris, the sometimes X-Man. Not even she knows that she's the daughter of the X-Men's greatest foe.

Lorna is largely unknown to the world at large. To those she met during her studies, she might be remembered for her sharp mind and generally easygoing nature, but probably mostly for her green hair. The X-Men she met while she was at the Xavier Institute will remember her as a team-mate… but probably also for her green hair.

Lorna Dane believes that she is the daughter of Arnold and Susanna Dane, that her parents were killed in a plane crash when she was three years old and that she was adopted and brought up by her aunt and uncle.
Some of this is even true, but much of it isn't.
Lorna is the daughter of Susanna Dane, but her father is Magneto, the Master of Magnetism. Arnold and Susanna Dane were killed in a plane crash - but it was a crash that Lorna herself caused, when her mutant powers first emerged. What's more, her foster parents were Arnold Dane's sister and her husband - so she's not related to them by blood at all. The truth of this has been hidden from her, her memories changed to conceal her role in the crash and the truth of her parentage.
Growing up, the only sign of her mutant nature was her vividly green hair, which she dyed brown to avoid standing out. Her magnetic powers had reverted to dormancy after the trauma of the plane crash, but she was never destined to live a normal life. Her powers re-emerged and she fell in with the students of the Xavier Institute, becoming an X-Man for a time before leaving to pursue her academic studies.
Since then she's been caught between the comparatively mundane world of a geophysics student and the more exciting, colourful and dangerous world of mutant heroes and villains. Unable to fully commit her life to either course, she's drifted between the two - and predictably, having now completed her Master's Degree in geophysics, she finds herself returning to the Xavier Institute, wondering where her life will take her next.

Character Details

Lorna Dane is someone who's never quite managed to find a place where she really fits in. She's pretended to live the life of a normal human being while pursing her studies, but she's always drawn back into the world of heroes and villains, her mutant nature refusing to be completely denied. As a mutant, though, she's never been able to commit herself fully to the X-Men's cause either. In both sides of her life, she's always felt that she's missing the final piece of the puzzle that will reveal who she should be.
As a person, Lorna has a bright, sharp mind, a good sense of humour and a generally easy-going nature. Most of the time she's a good friend and a brave and dependable team-mate. Unfortunately she can also be a creature of extremes, and sometimes events can cause her to sink into depression or react with needless aggression. On her bad days it's enough to make people wonder whether she's a little bit crazy.
