Claim to Fame
Some may remember the brief career of the obscure heroine known as the Cat. Rather more people will know of the feline heroine and her activities in California and new in New York.
Reputation
Tigra's a hero, though far from being a big name, and some may know of her small success as a detective in California.
Biography
Greer Nelson had a pretty normal upbringing, nothing terribly out of the usual. Blessed with a sharp intellect, she found herself drawn to the sciences in school, and pursued that interest in college, graduating with a degree in physics, and immediately moving into grad school. While she was in grad school, she met a handsome police detective by the name of Bill Nelson. They began seeing each other, and then fell in love.
After they got married, Greer set aside grad school for the time being, to focus money and energy on building a home life for her and Bill. Unfortunately, their life together was not to last. Bill was investigating a case that greatly disturbed him, leaving him unsettled and worried. It began to consume more of his attention as he worked to unravel the mystery. His efforts were both too successful and not successful enough. He drew the attention of the wrong sorts of people, but without being able to expose them, and he was ruthlessly gunned down.
His sudden death left Greer anguished and distraught, and she was barely functional for some time after this. Eventually, though, she pulled herself together and tried to reenter the world. Money was tight at this point, so going back to grad school wasn't an option, but her grad school adviser, Dr Tumolo was able to get her a position as a lab assistant working under her. And then Greer's life took another unexpected turn.
Dr Tumolo revealed herself to be a disguised member of a magically created race called the Cat People. She convinced Greer to be part of an experiment aimed to improve human potential, giving her increased strength and agility. When she combined this with a mystically enhanced costume, they rose to truly super-human levels, and in honor of her slain husband, she began a brief crime-fighting career as the costumed heroine known as the Cat.
The reason her career was brief was because Dr Tumolo and her companions had drawn the attention of HYDRA, who sought to take advantage of their knowledge. As the Cat, Greer drove them off, but was mortally wounded in the battle. In order to save her life, Dr Tumolo and the other Cat People performed a ritual that mixed magic, science and spirituality to summon the soul of their race's greatest warrior, the Tigra. This soul was then bound into Greer's form, transforming her into a human and feline hybrid, and gifting her with increased physical powers and abilities, at the cost of an inhuman appearance. The Cat People knew that they would have to go deep into hiding, lest they draw HYDRA's attention again, and embarked on one last project before doing so. They were able to create a mystic amulet for Greer, now calling herself Tigra, that would let her resume her human form.
With her life having been torn asunder once again, Greer moved to California to give herself time to deal with her changes. With her new abilities, she began a career as a private detective, achieving some modest success. As time went on, though, the flaw in the Cat People's procedure began to manifest itself. The Tigra soul had been infused into Greer, but it was still separate. She was one person with two natures, and those two natures did not rest easy with each other. This conflict intensified, causing her to swing from being in control of herself, to being savage and sensual.
She researched mystic avenues to find a solution for her situation, and was able to make contact with the Cat People's envoy Balkatar, who represented an enclave of their kind that centuries ago had hidden themselves in a mystic realm, and he brought her there, looking for help.
As the saying goes, negotiations broke down. Greer was confronted by a faction that wanted to blackmail her, to force her to do their bidding, lest they cause the Tigra soul to take over completely. A fight ensued, and during the engagement, her souls were able to merge into one combined whole, leaving her stronger, more balanced and in control, and more feline in appearance with the addition of a tail.
Feeling confident and capable in a way she hadn't in a long time, Greer returned to New York City to try to build a new life.

Character Details
These days, Tigra is a confidant and outgoing woman, pleased with herself and where she is in life. Given what she's been through, she tends to be open-minded towards other people, tending to give them the benefit of the doubt. To those who've proven themselves, she can be a loyal friend. To those who've shown themselves worthy of scorn, she's ready and willing to express her true opinion. She's happy to let people know where she stands, and appreciates forthrightness in others.
That said, her moods are sometimes mercurial, much like a cat who will enjoy affection one moment, and then savage the hand petting it the next, though typically not to that extreme. Due to her enhanced senses, the world is a more intense place for her, and she sometimes forgets what it's like for others. That intensity of life often makes her seem like a sensual hedonist, and it's a charge she won't lightly deny.
Agility |
Tigra has amazing agility and perfect balance, allowing her to do complex acrobatics and contortions, without seeming to hardly try. If she has room to work with, she can dodge gunfire and is a difficult target in hand to hand. If you've ever seen a cat jump, you have some idea of what else she can do. Additionally, she's incredibly flexible, to stretch, bend and twist in interesting ways. |
Claws |
Her fingernails also double as small claws, though nothing on the level of Wolverine. They are pretty strong, however, and can be used in most combat situations. They're not particularly armor piercing or the like, but will do a number on unprotected flesh. They're also strong enough to be used for climbing, but will not penetrate solid steel. Tigra gets best use out of them in climbing when she can fit them into openings in the surface of the material, or if it's soft enough for her to make her own. For a concrete example, she routinely climbs masonry buildings. |
Empathy |
When she first gained powers as the Cat, she acquired the ability to sense, with concentration, the emotions of those around her. She still has this ability, but is also capable of getting this information with her feline senses, though with a bit less precision. |
Endurance |
She has superhuman endurance to match her strength, allowing her to exert herself considerably longer, and at a greater extent than normal people. It takes her about as long as a normal person to recover her stamina after the fact. |
Feline Communication |
Tigra is capable of communicating with various sorts of felines. Cats being cats, she's not always capable of conveying complex ideas, but she can often get the gist across. How this affects truly sentient felines (especially PCs) is on a case by case basis. |
Healing |
Tigra is capable of rapid healing, compared to a normal human. Broken bones can heal is several days, and blood loss can be quickly made good, as long as she has enough to eat. This does not allow her to regrow lost limbs or the like, however. She can heal, but not regenerate. |
Leaping |
Propelled by her enhanced musculature, Tigra can leap dozens of feet lateral, or up to twenty feet up. |
Prehensile Tail |
Her tail is prehensile and can be used as a fifth limb, with limitations. Obviously, she can't manipulate fine objects, as with fingers, but it can be used to pull a lever, say. It can also support her own weight, though not comfortably. It has no serious effect as a blunt weapon. |
Senses |
All of her senses have been increased, with scent, smell, and hearing having the most dramatic improvement. She can hear ball of tissue paper dropped forty feet away, as well as hearing sounds both higher and lower pitched than the human norm. She can see in anything short of absolute darkness, and her vision extends slightly into the infra-red. Starlight or moonlight provide enough light to walk by, but in light this dim she cannot read and is effectively colorblind. Her eyes also adjust to changes in light much more quickly than a human's, as well as being more motion-sensitive. Her finely developed nose can detect odors as difuse as fifty parts per billion, and she can differentiate one out of many, allowing her to track by smell. She can also read emotions and moods, sometimes to the extent of knowing if someone's lying, though reading non-humans is can be an iffy proposition. Her sense of taste is enhanced as well, as it's tied to smell, though her tastes can be unique at times. |
Speed |
Tigra can run faster than an Olympic sprinter and is capable of short bursts of up to fifty miles per hour, but only for twenty seconds or so. |
Strength |
Tigra is capable of a maximum-strength lift of about five tons. Naturally her body has had to adjust to compensate, bones tougher, ligaments and tendons stronger, and so on. In human form, her max is around 500 pounds. |
Toughness |
Her strength makes her a bit more resiliant to blunt trauma, especially if she's able to tense her muscles before hand. For example, she could withstand a normal human swinging a baseball bat into her gut without a whimper, if she had time to tense her abs. She's able to withstand two or three tons of blunt trauma in this manner. She has only superficial resistance to piercing or cutting attacks, however, which would include bullets. |
Magic |
Tigra has been able to work some basic ritual magic, and she has some talent and affinity for it, though she also has almost no training. She does know a bit about the magic world, since she is quite definitely a member thereof. |
Stealthy |
Moving quietly is practicaly second nature to Tigra. Combined with her agility and grace, she's usually quite capable of putting her feet exactly where she wants them to go so make the least amount of noise. She has precise control over her musculature, absorbing impacts and footfalls under most circumstances. Additionally, her fur serves as a natural camoflage, depending on the lighting, surrounding, and so forth. She can squeeze herself into a smaller area, maximize coverage from shadows and hide behind obstructions. |
Science |
Greer has a solid understanding of general science and of physics in particular. Her knowledge is, however, nowhere near the level of science heroes, or villains. |
Magic Amulet |
She still has her magic amulet which allows her to disguise herself as an ordinary woman. It's enchanted to allow her to change forms from the Tigra to a normal human woman, though with the same height and build in both. She activates it by touching it and concentrating. The change itself takes only a few seconds and is painless. If seperated from her amulet and in Tigra form, she'll be unable to resume human form. If in human form and seperated, she'll remain that way for one day, and then over the next two or three days slowly revert to her Tigra form. Regaining the amulet immediately restores full control. |
Police Pension |
As the widow of a slain detective, Greer receives a modest pension. |
Detective |
Greer has learned some basic investigative skills, both from having talked with Bill before his death, and from her time as a private detective. |
Feral Nature |
Although she's currently an integrated and in control woman, Tigra has lost this control more than once in the past, and it's always possible that it could happen again. Extreme and prolonged stress might gradually coax it out, or a subtle telepath could encourage that side of her personality to be increasingly dominant. Chemicals or drugs that affect behavior can encourage this side of her as well, sometimes temporarily, and sometimes with longer term results. |
Inhuman Appearance |
In the form that's normal for her, Tigra sticks out in any crowd. It's possible for her to dress in ways that downplay her appearance, but nothing sort of completely covering herself will remove all reasonable chance of discovery of her nature. |
Sense Vulnerability |
As potent as her senses are, they also provide easy avenues of attack. Her sense of smell leaves her open to gas attacks of all kinds and particularly unpleasant odors can severely distract her or interfere with tracking, and she's more susceptible to phereomones. Sonic attacks have been known to leave her all but helpless and light attacks can disorient or temporarily blind her. |
