Sara Pezzini isn't exactly famous. Sure, there was something in the papers a few years back about the detective who was dating billionaire Kenneth Irons, but that disappeared almost as soon as it was news. People with connections to the NYPD or questionable papers may know her as an excellent detective who deals in strange crimes.
Those in the know about mystical artifacts probably don't know Sara, but they may know the Witchblade. Also known as the Balance, it has appeared throughout the ages on the arms of warrior women all over the world.
Reputation
One of NYPD's finest detectives, Sara is damned good at her job. The problem is, she's not very good at dealing with people, and she's a woman in what is still a man's world. She's been accused of being reckless, impulsive, short-tempered, and short-sighted, but she has one of the best records for solving cases. Skill combined with a complete lack of tact have seen her assigned to the special cases division, a department of the NYPD tasked with dealing with crimes that other detectives have deemed "weird" or "unsolvable." The fact that she continues to solve those crime keeps her head above water with the department - barely.
Biography
From the time she was a little girl, Sara wanted to be a detective like her father. She watched cop shows. She played cops and robbers. And she idolized her father. That didn't stop after Vince Pezzini was killed in the line of duty. Despite the fact that she was more than smart enough to go to college, Sara entered the police academy straight out of high school, where she was at the top of her class. She made detective by 26, one of the youngest detectives in the department, and despite butting heads with her chief, was on track to be a star.
Everything changed one night. While following clues from a drug bust, Sara showed up at the Rialto theater with her partner Michael Yee just as a tournament of sorts was being held by billionaire Kenneth Irons. Having recently found an artifact of great power, Irons was in search of someone to wield it. Sara snuck in by pretending to be an escort of one of the crime bosses in attendance. Her partner was not so lucky. Yee was caught sneaking in the back, and Irons was about to have him executed. Sara dove in front of the gunfire.
She should have died.
Instead, the artifact Irons had brought - the Witchblade - chose her.
Healed by the power of the blade, Sara fought off the gangs, burning down the theater in the process. And thus began her tenure as the Bearer. It hasn't been an easy path. The Witchblade has a mind and an agenda of its own, and high standards for its bearer. Irons was the first to try to take it away, but he was defeated, falling from his penthouse to his death. But despite attempts by Sara to give it up and attempts by others to take it away, she and the Witchblade are well and truly bonded.
Over the past few years, Sara has fought demons, ghosts, cultists, assassins, and criminals. She's only begun to learn the history of the blade, including its origins. A few run-ins with Jackie Estacado and the Darkness have given her some clues, but so far her focus has been on coming to terms with the Witchblade itself and balancing what it requires with her job as a detective.
And then there's the Witchblade…
One of thirteen artifacts of power, the Witchblade is the offspring of the Darkness and the Angelus, the balance between darkness and light. Male in character, it has throughout time chosen a female bearer to wield it. The Witchblade has high standards for a bearer and a will of its own. While some have conquered the Witchblade, other bearers have fallen victim to its more base and violent urges, becoming little more than instruments of the blade. Anyone who dares to hold it is up for a fight.

Character Details
Sara is not the easiest person to get along with. She has a (rightfully earned) reputation for having something of a temper, is prone to doing what she thinks is right no matter what, and sees the world in blacks and whites. She believes absolutely in the importance of the law, despite a tendency to bend the rules now and then to get the right results. She's no stranger to turning off the camera in interrogation.
Despite this, she has a deep and abiding desire to protect and serve. She has a hard time turning away from someone who needs help, even if she's prone to staying by herself and being something of a workaholic.
Investigation |
As an NYPD detective, Sara is trained and practiced in criminal investigation. Even without the Witchblade, she's a formidable talent. |
Hand To Hand |
As part of her training as a police officer, Sara is familiar with hand to hand, though her focus is usually on incapacitation rather than injury. She also uses kickboxing to keep in shape. |
Firearms |
Sara is damned good with a gun, preferring a small revolver to the usual police issue. Even if she has her duty piece on her, she'll usually have the revolver stashed somewhere as a spare. |
Witchblade - Armor |
One of the primary functions of the Witchblade is that it serves as armor. When not in use, the Witchblade is usually disguised as a bracelet. When in use, it can be a flexible suit of armor. Depending on what the situation requires, it may appear as nothing more than a gauntlet, or it may form full armor. This armor can protect from fire, bullets, blades, and even electricity or energy, though blunt force trauma - the sort that throws her a distance into something that doesn't move - is still going to hurt. |
Witchblade - Increased Strength |
While using the Witchblade armor, Sara has access to increased strength, allowing her to lift heavy objects up to 500 pounds, jump greater distances than humanly possible, and hit…well, hard. |
Witchblade - Melee |
In addition to armor, the Witchblade can arm its bearer with a full array of melee weapons, including sword, spear, axe, shield, etc. These share the properties of the armor in that they are virtually indestructible. The Witchblade has been able to interact with and deal damage to not only beings on the corporeal plane, but to incorporeal beings such as ghosts, and even minor gods. |
Witchblade - Grapple |
The Witchblade is flexible enough to also create whip-like tendrils, which can be used for grappling, climbing, and even picking locks. |
Witchblade - Energy |
The Witchblade is capable of firing blasts of energy or flame either from the bearer's hands or weapon. While these are both powerful, they're also very blunt force weapons - aiming is a relative function here, and either way there's going to be a lot of collateral damage. Usually the targets of these are something the Witchblade was designed to fight: demons, ghosts, creatures of the Darkness or the Angelus, etc. If they're coming out, chances are that Sara has lost some control and the Witchblade is acting on its own. These are able to impact both corporeal and incorporeal opponents, and can deal damage even to minor gods. |
Witchblade - Flight |
The Witchblade is capable of limited flight, by forming wings along with the armor. At this point, this functions mostly as a gliding apparatus rather than true flight, and is an instinct, emergency response rather than something Sara can choose to do on her own. |
Witchblade - Healing |
The Witchblade is capable of healing injuries to the bearer, though this takes a great deal of energy and does not provide complete healing. Bullet wounds are reduced to something like would result from being hit while wearing a vest, and Sara will need at least a solid night's sleep afterwards. OOC: Sara is not at all in control of this power. The Witchblade can do it and usually does, however it has a mind of its own and may not respond as quickly as she might like. |
Witchblade - Past Lives |
The Witchblade is a living record of the lives of those who have borne it. It stores their knowledge and their skill, and can share it with the current bearer if it chooses to. This usually occurs in the form of dreams, granting Sara some insight into a past bearer. OOC: Sara has no control over this function. For the most part, it's a plot-feeder. |
Witchblade - Ghost Sight |
The Witchblade gives its bearer the ability to see beyond the veil. At times, it may show - and can interact - with ghosts and other otherworldly beings. Again, Sara doesn't control this function, but it is something the Witchblade may provide if it senses she's in danger. |
Right Side of the Law |
As a detective, Sara has access to information and resources that the average citizen doesn't have. She can track addresses, license plates, and criminal histories. She can also - within reason - get warrants and call for backup from the department. If you need someone brought in for questioning or held for a few hours, that's something she can do…for the right reasons. |
Confidential Informants |
Also as part of being a detective, Sara stays in contact with a series of confidential informants. If something is going on in the streets, there's a pretty good chance she can find out something about it from them. |
Right Side of the Law |
Sure, it's an advantage when you want to do the right thing. It's a disadvantage when you know that guy is going to walk because someone forgot the seal the evidence bag. Sara can only bend the rules so far without breaking them, and not only is breaking them against her personal code, but it can lose her everything she values. She's not above roughing someone up in interrogation, but she isn't going to create evidence, and making sure that criminals face legal consequences for their actions is incredibly important to her. |
Woman in a Man's World |
Police detectives are still overwhelmingly male, and that means that Sara has something to prove on a daily basis. She doesn't get the same respect as her male counterparts, and often has to work twice as hard to get the same advantages and accolades. Being forceful can get her labelled a bitch rather than a go-getter, and getting information out of a fellow detective can sometimes mean dealing with a whole lot of suggestive flirting. |
Witchblade - Mind of its Own |
Sara may be the bearer of the blade, but at this point, she doesn't have complete control over it. Sometimes she has to fight not to give into its violent urgings, or to hide it from people who might be interested in taking it away. In the presence of allies of the Angelus or the Darkness, the Witchblade has a tendency to look for its own and act on its own will. |
Secret Identity |
Sara isn't "out" as a hero. The Witchblade is an instrument of balance, and flaunting it isn't wise in the current political climate. Besides, she's never wanted to be a superhero, not really. She wants to be a cop. As soon as she admits to having the Witchblade, there's going to be no end of paperwork and red tape debate over legitimate use of force, weapons registration, and God only knows what else. No, Sara wants very much to keep her identity as the bearer a secret. |
Short Temper |
Sara isn't afraid of letting her temper show. She'll yell, shout, and rant when something isn't the way she thinks it should be. In dealing with the Witchblade she's learned a little more control - how can she control the blade's violent urges if she can't even control her own? - but she's still prone to the occasional outburst. |
Black and White |
Sara tends to see the world in shades of black and white. Something is right, or it's wrong. It's legal, or it's illegal. You're good, or you're bad. It can take some convincing to get her to bend enough to admit that sometimes things aren't as simple or black and white as she wants them to be. |
Stubborn |
Sometimes a good thing, sometimes a bad thing. Once Sara sets her mind on something, she's hard to deter. That's not so bad when her goal is a worthy one. Unfortunately, she has a tendency to run roughshod over other people in pursuit of that goal, so even if she achieves it, she can leave a trail of pissed off friends and coworkers behind her. |
