Character Details
Raised in the hellish environment of a dying world, Nate learned early on how bad the world can become when evil has won the war. He saw too much horror and death his first years awake and he was marked forever. But once he realized he would die fighting, and it would be very soon, he lost all fear of death, and of almost anything else.
But he didn't find peace, he was too angry at the atrocities he saw and at seeing his friends dying. His rage drove him to fight harder, but also to recklessness and costly mistakes. When through cosmic happenstance he became the only survivor of the Age of Apocalypse, he was almost crushed by the guilt of the survivor.
A few years later, he is still haunted by nightmares and memories, and he is still quick to anger and resort to violence. He remains harsh and impatient, but also fearless and committed to prevent that what happened to his world happens again anywhere.
Despite having escaped his doomed world to a better one, Nate is quite aware he has chosen a life style that will bring him to an early grave. On consequence, he remain rootless, yet willing, even eager, to try new experiences, to meet interesting people, to live his life to the fullest when he is not risking it. He genuinely likes people and makes friends easily.
Combat |
Nate received constant and intensive training in hand to hand and armed combat during his years as part of Forge's resistance cell. He had many opportunities to put his training into use, as he wasn't allowed to use his mutant powers. As a consequence, he is a good martial artist, trained in the style of combat used by the US Army. Not particularly stylish, but quite effective, an expert would notice some moves borrowed from judo and krav maga.
He is also experienced using firearms, explosives and hand-to-hand weapons, but his skills in these areas are somewhat rusty, as he relies on telekinesis for most physical fighting. |
Survival |
For several years Nate had to survive among the ruins of America, in the war-torn world Apocalypse had created with his conquests. So he is often able to find food and shelter under most circumstances. His skills would work best in the territory he learned them, which was a lawless nation ravaged by war, ruined cities, radioactive areas and roaming bands of heavily armed bandits. But many of the basic principles of survival remain the same. |
First Aid |
Nate is well-trained in basic medical procedures to treat injuries in the field. He is not a real doctor and he knows only a bit about medicines or diseases. But he can patch up someone injured by the usual hazards of combat. He can set bones right, treat burns, stitch and bandage wounds, even extract bullets without making an injure worse. He is a useful guy to have around after a tough fight. |
Stage Acting |
Nate is a talented amateur actor with a particular love for Shakespeare. He learned the basics in his home Earth, when Forge's rebel band passed as a troupe of wandering actors, and took it up as a hobby. He is also a decent stage magician, which becomes a fabulous stage magician when he adds some telepathic illusionism and telekinetic trickery. He even manages well at Karaoke bars. It helps he is pretty much shameless. |
Psychometry |
By reading psychic impressions Nate is able to use a limited form of postcognition. Since it relies in psychic tracks left by beings able to feel emotions and think, it is useless to find out about events that have not been seen by living beings or that left no emotional impact. Nate doesn't have a good control over this ability and it sometimes fires off without warning in places with very strong psychic residue, causing hallucinations or even leaving him trapped in a psychic vision for a few seconds. |
Dimensional Travel |
When Nate was drawn out of a parallel world the second time, he found himself able to step out of reality and visualize a 'Spiral of Worlds' composed by an seemingly infinite number of parallel earths. Some traveling around showed him he could step into most of those earth and then step out with some effort, it was easier in some earths than in others, and in some places than others. So he set upon looking his native world to see what had happened after he left.
But it seems Earth 626 is one of the harder-to-leave realities. He has been unable to summon the 'Spiral' as yet, although he assumes he could from a place where dimensional barriers are weak. |
Telepathy |
Nate Grey is a very strong telepath, but because of his lack of experience and temperament, he lacks the finesse necessary to be as effective as his raw power would suggest.
For simple communications, Nate reach is worldwide. He can project his thoughts and establish mental links even with people thousands of miles away if he knows the person and the person is willing. At shorter distances is easy even project images and share memories with the target.
Multi-mind mind-links are trickier but still possible, so he can also bring a small group into a mental chat and even provide some basic sensorial sharing. Keeping a complex mind-link for a team during a situation of high stress, like a battle, is more difficult and might be impossible if he is injured.
Mind-Reading: Nate can read surface thoughts of awake human and human-like minds easily, without even accidentally. He can do this even with minds that are tens of miles away. Non-human minds are much harder and truly alien minds, or the minds of animals, can be incomprehensible for him (although he can still feel they are there, and they usually remain open to psychic attacks). Nate can also dig deeper into a mind and read memories, even suppressed memories, but he would need to be much closer to the target or keep an open mind-link with a willing person.
Psychic Blast: Nate can blast minds with raw psychic power, stunning, or even killing other sentient organic beings. This is a blunt, high-energy power use, and he excels on those. But the range for this kind of stunt is limited to a few hundred yards, and it works much better when the victim is very close. Mental defenses of all kinds, including sheet force of will or mental disciplines, can protect partial or completely the attacked mind. In general non-organic life (like robots) is invulnerable.
Mind-Shields: Like most telepaths, Nate has strong mental defenses. He can screen his mind from other telepaths, and he instinctively keeps shields up at all times to avoid automatically reading minds around him. With some effort he is to extend his shields to other minds that are very close to him, but the shielding is weaker the more minds he is protecting. Nate can't use his shields to hide his presence from psychic sensitives, he is always too psychically active and radiates too much power. (See flaws).
Astral Projection: Nate can easily free his astral form, becoming a ghost-like being in the physical plane. In this form his capabilities are reduced, he is an immaterial 'ghost' and has no access to telekinesis. His telepathic abilities against others depend entirely of the distance to his physical body. The only exceptions are other psychics capable of astral projection, against which he can use his full power using the Astral Plane as a bridge.
He can also enter the Astral Plane where his full powers are wholy accessible. Because in the Astral Plane thought is reality and he is not hindered by the physical limitations of his body, he is far stronger than he is in the physical world. He can also take other people with him to the Astral Plane, even non-psychics.
Mind-Control: Nate dislikes manipulating minds, and so this aspect of his telepathy remains underdeveloped and takes time and effort. Despite that, he is able of a broad variety of trickery. He can, for instance, implant ideas and memories in other minds, although those false ideas tend to fade after a while. He can also project psychic illusions, the most simple of which and the only one he uses regularly is making himself 'invisible'.
Simple commands on unguarded minds such as 'sleep' are also pretty easy and effective. But complex psychic surgery is unlikely to work, and his attempts at complex telepathic manipulations are often imperfect.
It is always easier to manipulate a mind that is well-known, and harder to control strong-willed, suspicious targets, the insane, people with any kind of psychic power and sometimes people with enhanced senses or unusual perceptions.
Empathy: Emotions are not the same things as thoughts. Like any telepath Nate can sometimes infer what someone feels from surface thoughts. However, he can also often detect directly the emotions of others if those are intense and the person is within a few yards. |
Telekinesis |
Nate is a strong telekinetic that can lift almost 100 tons of matter with his mind, and perform a broad range of telekinetic manipulation, up and including altering substances to a molecular (but not atomic level). His telekinesis remains at near full strength within about a 100 yards range of him, but loses strength quickly after that; he can't project his power too far from his body due to the technovirus interference. Because he has a few years of experience and he highly favors his telekinesis for combat, he is reasonably skilled at using it. But serious multi-tasking and fine manipulation is still beyond him.
Force Shields: Nate can create very strong force-fields to protect himself or others. They can be flat or in the form of bubbles and other simple geometrical constructs. Complex shapes are beyond his skill. The shields are not fully air-tight, and although they will stop matter and most energy, they don't grant complete protection of heat or cold either.
Flight: By using telekinesis Nate can fly at hypersonic speed, protecting himself from air friction with a force-field. He can also move groups, but his speed is reduced the more mass he needs to move. Past a couple tons, he won't be supersonic. And if he needs to move close to the maximum weight, speed would be less than 100 mph.
Force Blasts: Nate can create bursts of psychokinetic energy that usually are fired from his left eye. Those blasts generate no hear or radiation, they are pure kinetic energy.
Enhanced Strength/Toughness: By focusing his telekinesis on himself Nate can give himself the equivalent to superhuman strength in the 50 tons range, and matching resistance to injury.
Molecular Rearrangement: Nate can focus his telekinesis to control the molecular structure of small amounts of solid matter and force it to change shape. He often uses this to reconfigure his clothes, but can also shape glass to fix a broken window, or remove the ink from a sheet of paper. He can use this power to force molecules of solid matter out of phase with his body and walk through walls without breaking them. He can't manipulate the harder materials, so anything tougher than steel is beyond his reach. |
Precognition |
Nate has some uncontrolled precognitive abilities that usually manifest when he dreams. Since he is often plagued by nightmares when he sleeps, it is not easy for him to differentiate regular bad dreams from precognitive warnings. This leads him to ignore this facet from his power that could be very useful if mastered. (OOC note: this power is difficult to bring into normal RP and therefore is subject to plot restrictions and consent and is more a plot-device than anything else). |
Strong Will |
Like many heroes, and most psychics, Nate has a very strong sense of self and he is very strong-willed and stubborn. He is also almost completely fearless and it is pretty hard to get him to back down when he feels something is important. |
Outfit |
Nate wears a combat outfit designed in his homeworld that offers him good protection from small-arms and fire without restraining his mobility. He has kept the basic design whole through the years using his telekinesis, and although he has learned to make it look like regular clothes, it retains its protective value. |
Psychic Powerhouse |
Nate is a powerful psychic, classified as an omega class mutant under most standards. Sinister selected his genetic parents as the ones that had the better chance to produce an exceptionally powerful mutant, and then tweaked his genetics to allow him to quickly achieve his full potential. This gave Nate truly vast powers when he was still a teenager, and almost killed him because his mind and body couldn't cope with so much energy.
Salvation came in the form of an alien technovirus that infected him when he was fighting super-criminals in a downed alien ship. His powers keep the virus from transforming or killing him, but the infection functions as a dam for his power, reducing it to manageable levels. If the infection was cured, Nate would be ten times more powerful than he is now, but he would also die in a few minutes, consumed by his own power.
Yet even so, he is still too powerful for modern, human technolongy to measure and containt. Nate will quickly overload or override most technology designed to restrain mutant or psychic powers. |
Psionics |
All of Nate's power are mental and its performance depends on his mental state and ability to concentrate. If he is tired, upset or drugged, his powers will be weaker, uncontrollable or erratic. Moreover, they are never completely 'off' and can activate even when he sleeps. |
Obvious Power |
As often happens mutant powers come with a light show. In Nate's case it is a glowing left eye, a trait he shares with his genetic 'brothers' Cable and Stryfe. And when operating at high power levels, Nate's body becomes surrounded by a nimbus of golden light.
Moreover, his powers are also very 'loud' for other psions and detection equipment, and they can't really be turned off. Nate's psychic presence when he is using his powers to any degree has been said to flare across the Astral Plane and can be 'seen' by psychic sensitives for hundreds of miles. |
Reckless |
Nate is very prone to act without thinking. He is impatient and easy to anger. He is also almost completely fearless. As a consequence he is quick to jump into action, and it is easy to provoke him into a fight. In part this is due to a good deal of badly restrained rage and survivor's guilt he carries from the Age of Apocalypse. But it is also due to his powers, the vast psychic energies he generates are overwhelming and he often feels hypercharged with nervous energy. He sleeps little, and badly. |
Technovirus |
Although it has kept him alive despite the genetic sabotage Sinister had implemented that would kill him early on, the technovirus infecting his body is hardly a benign symbiotic organism designed to help. In fact, it is trying to turn him into a programmed cyborg soldier to fulfill the directives of a long forgotten space war in other dimension. Full spreading of the virus would lobotomize him while keeping most of his powers intact, turning him into a serious threat to human life.
His powers keep the technovirus at bay most of the time. But it is a constant war inside him that often flares when he makes extensive use of his powers, bringing a good deal of pain, internal hemorrhaging and the occasional temporal loss of some of his powers (usually either telepathy or telekinesis). |
