It has been a crazy few days for Katherine Pryde who has had her world turned upside down. First she had people suddenly appear at her home, telling her she is a mutant (that a blessing as it explained the headaches and 'sleepwalking' she was experiencing for a long time) and then they invited her to a… school the man who called himself Professor Xavier called it. One for special kids like her. Talented children. Took a bit of convincing and fast talking, and perhaps a bit of mental nudging from Charles, before her parents agreed. And there she was, whisked away to Winchester, her family and friends and old school left behind.

They have only been at the mansion for a few hours and already Kitty's feeling at home. Being near kids her age and who are like her really helps and of course Charles has done his part to make sure she can get settled in without complications; her bags have been taken to the room she'll share with another girl by a hulking young man whose skin has a faintly gray tint to it, leaving her free to explore.

Charles wheels backwards into Kitty's room, doing a wheelie the whole way. "All right, Kitty, if I can't hold this for the duration of our talk, I'll buy you a soda," he says, eyes narrowed in concentration. He works back and forth in place, balancing carefully on his rear wheels. He smiles at the girl in a friendly fashion, one that's fatherly and affectionate. "Are you feeling a bit better?" he asks. He always asks, even though he doesn't need to.

~

At the ripe young age of 21, Scott Summers has just found himself graduating with a degree from the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Seven years past and we see here a much brighter Summers, not yet burdened by the weight of responsibility that comes with the title of 'Team Leader'. Thus, it is with a particularly smug grin that he comes scooting around a hallway, coming upon the Professor's tail as he comes near Kitty's newly assigned room. "He's gonna hold it," he calls to the teenager, and produces a soda from behind his back. "Think fast." The soda goes whinging through the air, headed on a precise course for Kitty's midsection. About the easiest catch possible.

~

"Betcha you're gonna cheat," Kitty teases Charles, her own smile as fond as his is. "But okay! And if you can…" She pauses and looks around, trying to think of what she can do if she winds up losing the bet. "Well… you can tell me what you'd like or something." Her shoulders lift in a shrug and she smirks, almost about to say something, but then they're joined by Scott. "You think he can," she asks him, frowning. It isn't that she is a sore loser but she isn't too sure if she's keen in the idea of taking part in a bet she might not stand a chance to win.

~

The toss startles Kitty who starts to sink into the floor, the can able to pass through her hands to land somewhere behind her. That's one soda that'll need to sit for a while before it's opened. Kitty blinks and the slow decent into the floor stops eventually but not before she's literally up to her knees in it. "Oh… poo! Sorry!"

~

Charles chuckles, still balancing. "How can I cheat? It's not like I have special powers that work on my wheelchair," he points out.

~

At Kitty's momentary intangibility, Charles exchanges a quick glance with Scott. "That's something I hope I can help you with, Kitty," Charles says, nodding at the girl encouragingly. "That reflex. We can help train you so that you don't fall through floors accidentally. Or intentionally, if you get into trouble," he adds, with a twinkle in his eye.

~

Scott has a long way to go before he becomes a leader. There is a frown on his face when Kitty reacts in such a way, but it's short lived. He catches that look from Charles, then edges past and over toward Kitty. "Don't worry about that soda." He reaches out to offer a helping hand. "Come on. I'll help you up."

~

It isn't easy for Kitty to get back out but after a little focus and a lot of help from Scott she manages to, Professor X's words ringing in her ears. "Thanks," she murmurs to the younger man who gets a smile although this one's kind of embarrassed. It's as if she's expecting to be chided by one or both of them for her mistake even though Charles seems understanding and willing to help.

~

The can is picked up and held onto so someone unsuspecting won't get their hands on it and open it. Soda's really hard to get out of carpet and she'd hate to be the cause of a carpet cleaning bill. "Yeah," she starts to address them both with while she blushes, poor Kitty's face almost on fire now, "I hope we can figure out how to do that. It's kind of a pain when it happens." And sometimes it really does hurt, the phasing not always a painless event.

~

Charles nods sympathetically at Kitty, still balancing. "It takes time. I worked for years with some of my students until they found the knack of their gifts. I'm still learning how to make mine work," he reminds the girl with a fond smile. "Just be patient. As long as you don't burn anything down, you won't get into trouble." He spins in place once, looking at Scott. "And I think all that boy got was a little talking to, mmm?" he asks Scott, with a grin.

~

Scott braces his feet, helping with a few good tugs until Kitty is out of the floor. "Don't worry about it," he answers in earnest, before looking Charles' way when the professor spins about to face him. He smirks, smugly sure, but there's a hint of a flush that comes to his face. "Yeah." His head tilts just so, and Kitty might perceive that beneath those ruby lenses, he's looking sideways at her. "It's not like we're misbehaving when our powers act up." An eyebrow hooks upward. "Unless we're doing it on purpose." His grin comes back in full force. "Have you seen any of the students playing basketball out there? It's fun to see, especially when they give up the 'no powers' rule." Finally he walks over, sticking out his hand. "I'm Scott. Or you can call me 'Cyclops'."

~

Kitty is pretty darn observant and more than a little smart and she can't help but to look between Charles and Scott, giving the latter a smirk after a moment. "You set stuff on fire," she asks about his powers, assuming he's like the girl in that movie Firestarter. The soda gets put down and she walks around them both, doing so so she can look in the room. "It isn't easy to be patient but I promise I'll at least try… oh. You can call me Kitty." No callsign for her, yet! She takes his hand and give it a shake.

~

"It was an accident," Charles clarifies. "And we understand accidents. The purpose of our school is to help you learn how not to have accidents, or at least, minimize them. Everyone makes mistakes," he says to the girl, smiling. "The method of growing up is learning not to repeat them," he says, with gentle emphasis.

~

"Sort of." When it comes to his powers, Scott has always sobered, and this time is no different. "I guess you could say that I shoot fire from my eyes. It's why I need to wear these." He reaches up to tap at his glasses. "It's not like I'm always shooting fire out of my eyes, but… I can't control it, and the lenses keep others safe. So if I have an accident, someone doesn't end up…"

~

It takes a lot for him not to sigh. He muscles through the angst, instead forcing a grin onto his face. "Who knows, maybe Hank can invent some kind of dissapear-o proof shoes for you to wear?" He casts a look Charles' way. "Training boots."

~

Accidents do happen, yes. Kitty discovered that after finding out what she is and was able to figure out why she woke up in different parts of the Pryde family house. Heaving a bit of a sigh, she turns to look at them both, Kitty looking a bit sad for Cyclops. "That has to suck," she utters, not sure how else to put that. A shoulder lifts and then, with a snort of aborted laughter, she pivots to look at them both more fully. "Training boots? Really? Come on…. seriously!?"

~

"Hank is extremely smart, and we have some innovative and clever inventors here," Charles explains. "We could at least help prevent some of your sleepwalking episodes. Maybe find a way to charge your blankets so that you can't phase through them." He rubs his chin. "I am honestly not very skilled as an engineer. But I imagine there must be some simple explanation for how to intercept it."

~

Scott forms one of his signature smug grins. "Makes me one hell of a poker player, though." Then, he's bursting into laughter, and nodding. "Hank? You'll have to meet him, he can design — anything —, but, uh, he might need some advice on how to make them, you know, fashionable."

~

There's a pause before she shakes her head. "You guys are supposed to be the experts. I'll just… uh, go along with whatever you think will work." God knows Kitty has no clue about how her powers work. Hopefully they'll be able to figure it out eventually, otherwise solutions will be hard to find.

Scott's smirk is returned with one of her own, hers more playful than smug. "Fashionable… I can probably do that, sure," she eventually comments. "Introduce me to this Hank of yours. Maybe we can come up with something."

~

"Now, remember, Kitty. Manners. Hank is Doctor McCoy," he says, carefully clarifying things for the girl. "Just like I am Professor Xavier," he explains, still balacing. "It is important to remember to be polite to people who are older than you are. When you go out into the world as an X-man, some day, I want you to leave people with the memory of how polite and friendly you were." He smiles down at the young girl.

~

The Professor's advise to Kitty has the (likely intended) effect of humbling Scott. He turns to glance at Charles, barely concealing a grimace, before looking back at Kitty. Face flushed, he walks over to snatch up the soda can, saying to her, "I'll go and get you another."

~

"Sorry, Professor." Clearing her throat, Kitty looks down at her feet while the toe of one shoe is scuffed against the carpeting. Charles did remind her gently but even then she is embarrassed over her behavior. Scott's offer of a new soda gets her to smile, the embarrassment lessened a little. "Thanks, Sco… er, Cyclops, I suppose, yes?"

~

"That's up to Scott," Charles smiles. As Cyclops goes to get her a new soda, he sets his front wheels down and winks at the girl. "I think that's enough for now. Get settled. Make some friends. And if my door is open, feel free to come and talk to me," he adds, backing out of the room. He smiles again at Kitty.

"Welcome to the school," he adds, before wheeling down the hall to catch up with Scott. He pivots and rolls backwards, looking up at Scott. "I think she may be quite an asset to the team in a few years," he informs the future team leader.

~

"Scott, for now," he answers, before turning to depart. Once the professor joins him outside, he nods his head. "She's so young," he admits. "All of the new ones coming in, they're so young, and I'm not even that old yet." He looks toward Charles, frowning. "We've got our work cut out for us."
