The sun's gone down in M-Town and in a neighborhood like that, that's a lot like flipping a switch. Most areas of the neighborhood are safe enough, if on the rough side, by day. By night most of the shops close up and the area gets… quiet. Sure on the main drag the nightlife goes on, catering to those connoisseurs of 'mutant culture' or residents just looking to cut loose a bit, but out of the main business districts, obvious commerce tends to wind up close to sunset.

Of course, this doesn't mean that there aren't things going on. M-Town has a crime problem all it's own, the more complex for having such a distinct demographic living in it and lately… Things have being going on. People disappearing. Folks whisper about it fearfully: white vans and men in suits rounding folks up off the streets. And just because legitimate commerce largely ends doesn't mean nothing happens. In the city that never sleeps, neither does the criminal underworld.

All the same it's perhaps just a biiiiit out of the ordinary when a closed office front on a side street several blocks off the beaten path erupts in a shower of shattered glass and splintered timber as something very large and very furry and vaguely lupine is ejected out of the building at speed, tumbling across the street and into a wall on the other side. Opposite it, in the office front itself, seemingly a medical office, a glowing blue vaguely lupine form rises. Car alarms and the building's burglar alarm immediately begin to blare.

*

Sara Pezzini heard a rumor in a bar from a pair of strangers that there might be kids disappearing in M-Town. And given recent events, she's a little sensitive about missing kids right now. So despite the fact that nothing is officially her job at the moment, she's made her way out to M-Town after dark, walking the streets in hope of finding something that catches her attention. Shattering windows and strange forms definitely count. "It's like clockwork," she says to herself, starting to run toward the source of the sounds.

*

M-Town, after dark. Laura often drew discouraging looks as a general manner - for a mutant, she didn't present with many obvious physical mutations, like so many that fled here. But there was a lot of desperation inherent in the people here. Laura knew about the disappearances, had even tracked one to a little underground sewer thing, run by… mafia looking sorts.

She didn't stop to get details.

*

But Laura was actually heading to her apartment, sack of groceries clutched in her hands, when she heard the explosion. Dressed in a leather jacket with a woolen inner coat, a comfortable skirt that reached past her thighs, knee-high boots, and a t-shirt for some band worn beneath the jacket, the silver of a cross dangling from her neck.

The explosion catches her attention too. Within a handful of moments, she was rushing towards the scene too (from the opposite direction as Sara), her eyes flickering towards the Lupine form as she approaches, casting eyes back up to the place it came from.

*

Even though she's been to New York dozens of times now, Supergirl has never been to 'M Town'. It's not really supposed to be a tourist destination, after all. But with her recent hacking activities, Kara discovered some nasty things that could affect the mutant community. The question of where the labs got some of their test subjects hasn't been answered yet, but Kara has a sickening feeling that they may have come from M Town; willingly or otherwise. So, after getting some 'scruffy' clothing, Kara is trying her hand at undercover work. She's also wearing her glasses, but no wig, trying to keep 'Kara Kent' away from the investigation as far as possible.

When the explosion happens, Kara's first instinct is to fly towards it at super-speed. But, she forces herself to remain 'in character' and runs at a healthy pace towards the devastated office front. The blue-furred creature definitely gets another look, but Kara's main task right now is to check the building with her x-ray vision to see if there are any victims inside the building.

*

The furry creature that got chucked out of the building - Sara if no one else can probably pretty conclusively identify it either as an actual Werewolf or a mutant with a power so close that the distinction is academic - gets back up and charges back through the ruined storefront. "GET AWAY FROM MY PEOPLE YOU MANIAC!"

Kara can see at least four other people inside, two men, two women, as well as the fact that the glowing blue figure is struggling with one of them before the werewolf seizes him and, in a judo like maneuver, hurls *him* from the building. He doesn't quite go into the wall, just the middle of the street, but the sight of a blue, glowing, vaguely (though differently) lupine form is now quite obvious. He/it is also getting back up pretty damn fast, apparently not done here.

*

"Hey!" Sara calls ahead of herself as she comes closer to the building. "NYPD! Everyone, weapons down, out of the building, and on your knees!" It's cute how she keeps following the script, right? There's definitely a badge around her neck, though, and the gun she holds at the ready is department issue. On the other hand, everyone knows NYPD doesn't exactly keep a close watch on M-Town.

*

Laura ends up going to the edge of the explosion, her lips pursing, and a little frown dancing at the edges of her lips. At least, until the cop shows up and starts shouting things around. That would probably work everywhere /but/ M-Town.

Laura's hand clutch at the edges of her grocery bag, and her nostrils flare as she takes a sniff of the air, kinda focusing in on Sara in particular, eyes narrowing - for her own reasons.

*

Four civilians still inside. Two of them with guns, one looking like they're seriously hurt. And then the NYPD show up. Kara is weighing her options here at super-speed. The fuzzy werewolf just shouted to 'Leave his people alone', so he could be a mutant. And for a bit, Kara is wishing she'd stayed in Metropolis, where the line between good guys and bad guys is much more clear cut. But there's someone that's hurt, possibly in the way of a fight, and Kara cant ignore that. Running at super speed, appearing to be nothing more than a blur, Kara runs into the office, past all the combatants, and grabs the injured person. An eye blink later and Kara drops off her evacuee a safe distance away before running back to a safe observation point.

*

It's not that people are ignoring Sara… it's just that they're not quiiiite listening to her. The glowing wolf-thing pauses in it's advance and glances to Sara. The light seems to fade around it revealing a vaugely middle eastern man glaring at the ruined doctor's office. Opposite him, lined up more or less at the edge of the storefront is one werewolf and four rather obvious mutants, two of them with handguns. "Detective-" the formerly glowing man starts.

"OFFICER!" One of the mutants interrupts. "He was trying to snatch us all!"

The man on the street gets a sudden 'Oh crap' look on his face.

*

"Uh huh. Tell you what, everyone puts down their weapons and their scary bits, and we can talk this out somewhere neutral," Sara replies to the accusation, keeping her gun up as she eyes everyone there. "I'd like to hear about these snatching plans. Seems to me like kidnapping's one of those things we can all agree isn't okay. People in danger of being snatched will want to make a full report, and people accused of attempted snatching will want to prove their innocence. People who run, on the other hand, well, they look guilty."

*

They might look guilty indeed. Perhaps in the flurry of powers and giant werewolves, Laura might be less obvious.

But she had her walk - in spite of the police, she was approaching the man on the street at kinda an oblique angle, hoping to not be overly noticeable, her eyes switching from him to Sara idly.

*

Okay, Kara's done her good deed here. The police are here and this isn't her town. And if there hadn't been accusations of 'snatching', Kara would already be gone from ehre. But this could lead to a big break in the case, more information to give to Oracle. So, Kara plays the bystander, using her superhearing to listen in on what's happening.

*

There are still weapons in evidence. Two firearms trained on the middle-eastern stranger who look, it must be said, pretty damn tense himself. There's a half beat and then Kara's superhuman hearing picks up a tensing of muscles. "Yeah, as if you're gonna solve anything." The woman who made the accusation says bitterly. "Here. Let me take care of the problem for you."

BANG

At that very moment, tall dark and furry leaps forward, intent on finishing the man off while he's vulnerable, the other weapon in play barks out, targeting streetlights, of which there are only a few, immediately starting to darken the scene.

*

With the sounds of guns entering play, Laura leaps back from the man that she was approaching - whirling on her heel and starting to take off down the nearest alleyway, her grocery bag swinging as she goes.

*

Sara curses under her breath, but despite the fact that bullets are flying, she doesn't start shooting. Instead, she holsters her gun in a smooth motion and runs toward the group. It may be dark, as the streetlights go out, but there's definitely something unusual going on, the remaining light flashing off of something metallic at her right arm and shoulder. "No faith," she mutters, trying to tackle the accused would-be kidnapper.

*

As she hears the muscles tensing, Supergirl knows that things are going to escalate. And as soon as the woman fires the gun, she blurs into super-speed, managing to make it to the man before the bullet hits him. The led projectile is plucked out of the air, and Kara quickly turns around, prepared to catch any other bullets that might be fired towards the man or any other civilian.

*

The bullet is a hollow point. That would have, if not killed the man shot it, seriously injured him. As it is, Kara now gets to deal with a face full of angry maybe mutant werewolf. One might not be able to call him trained but he certainly makes up for it in raw ferocity, wielding razor sharp claws against the girl of steel.

The man in the street jerks back as there is suddenly a Supergirl in front of him. He tenses and for a moment begins to glow blue in electronic patterns along his skin… and then Sara tackles him from the side. Clearly the last thing he was expecting. "Ow! The hell Detective?!"

The remaining four, including the shooter… bolt, each making for a separate alleyway.

*

"Seriously?" Sara exclaims when she realizes who she's landed on. "We have got to stop meeting like this. Stay here," she orders, pushing herself up roughly. "You're answering questions when I get back." After which she's heading after one of the runners, sparing only a brief glance for the girl who's suddenly appeared in front of the bullet. Anyone who can appear in front of a bullet and still be there can probably handle a werewolf thing, right?

*

And, now Kara has to deal with Cujo on steroids. Great. "Look," she says calmly to the creature. "You really don't want to do this. Let's just calm down and talk this out."

She raises an arm to block the first swipe, and yells out in pain as the claws actually bite into her near invulnerable skin. Not a heavy wound, but enough to draw blood. Wincing in pain, Kara backs away.

"Okay….maybe you do want to do this…" The next few swipes are dodged, and then Supergirl flies backwards to try and stay out of range. She doesn't want to hurt this thing, even if the feelings aren't mutual. So, she opts for her super-breath, blowing at the wolf-creature to try and freeze it in ice, or at least slow it down.

*

None of the fleeing suspects seem particularly fit. In fact, if she has a chance to get a good look at them, they remind her of the kind of people you meet in hospitals running labs. Sure some of them run or work out or something but… well in any case, Sara's chosen victim isn't anywhere near on her level in a foot race. He only gets halfway down the alley before she catches up to him and to be honest the way he's huffing suggests he won't be that hard to take down.

Speaking of being taken down, the werewolf in question doesn't seem to be used to things that are A)Stronger than him and B)Can’t be eviscerated. Part of the problem of being a relative powerhouse is remembering that there is always a bigger fish. And he's just met her. The breath bowls him over and causes rime to form on his fur. Another instant or so and he's quite solidly rooted under a good six or so inches of ice.

*

One more time," Sara calls after the runner. "NYPD. Don't make me take you down the hard way." Because she will. But she's not invulnerable, and running into people is a lot of bruises and scrapes. "I just want to talk about whatever happened here!"

*

Well, this seems to be working; so Supergirl keeps up the icy blast on the werewolf. Considering how thick that fur probably is, Kara doesn't think it'll be harmed by the cold at all. But it will be immobilized, which is the important point. Supergirl watches as the rime becomes shards of ice, then sheets of ice. Finally, the werewolf is encased in a thick block of ice, aside from the head so that it can breathe. With the werewolf now on ice, Kara flies closer to it, although still far enough away to dodge if the thing breaks lose.

"Okay, you ready to talk now?"

*

The runner takes a calculating look behind him… almost as if running the odds of getting away. Finding them not in his favor he - rather astonishingly - does the smart thing and stops, putting his hands up. "Okay, okay, geeze, you got me…" He pants and huffs. He so needs to run more if he's going to try outrunning the NYPD.

"Of all the times for a cop to show up. Figured you guys couldn't care less about what goes down here."

A sullen glare greets Kara. Behind her the man Detective Pezzini tackled is back on his feet and laughs mirthlessly. "I doubt he really wants to talk. But I can do all the explaining you need. Soon as the good Detective gets back here."

*

"Yeah, well, prevailing opinion's not exactly right," Sara mutters as she reaches the man, pulling out a pair of cuffs. "Contrary to popular belief, most of us don't go into law enforcement for the money and the glory."

She slaps the cuffs on, then pulls the man up, starting to walk him back toward the scene of the crime and eyeing the were-sicle as she gets closer. "I may be wrong about you," she says to the man she tackled earlier, "But I'm pretty sure you'd be looking into disappearances rather than orchestrating them. So let's clear up this little misunderstanding."

*

When the man behind her speaks up, Kara turns around and lands, looking at him in a not-too-friendly manner. "Considering that you ran from an NYPD officer who identified herself and your associate shot at an unarmed man, I wouldn't exactly put your version of events as the most credible." Then Sara returns with the other runner, switching Kara's attention over to her. "But I think that's something for the officer here to unravel," she says in Sara's direction. Then she turns back to the man. "I think it bears investigating, though, why a mutant would accuse you of kidnapping."

The man to whom the detective is speaking, whom she seems to know, smiles a wan little smile. "I can. I think you'll forgive me for being here once you see what you've got in their basement." He starts to move toward the ruined office-front. "By the way miss…" He says to Kara as he steps carefully around the werewolf. "Thanks for catching that bullet. I'm not really fond of catching them the traditional way and I've been doing a little much of that lately."

Providing now one objects he opens the basement door, which appears to have been jimmied and goes down the flight of stairs to a very cold room. Inside it looks a bit like morgue with slabs for autopsies and storage for cadavers. He picks up a canister marked with biohazard labels. "To deflect your attention from the fact that they're doing illegal retroviral research here, of course. I'd meant to sneak in and find out exactly what and for whom. Place wasn't quiiiite as empty as I thought it was."

*

"It's never clear-cut," Sara sighs as Aspect offers an explanation, scrubbing a hand over her face before eyeing the frozen fellow. "Thanks," she adds to Kara, managing a faint smile. "But I'm about to call in for backup to really get a look at this crime scene, so if you're not big on faces, this is probably the time for you to think about heading out."
