Steak Au Poivre

Summary:
July 12 2014: Fenris and Inara meet Pepper (again) whilst at dinner.

Arne Mortensen's Steakhouse

Steak for the elite, this place is not at all inexpensive, but if you can afford it, it's also well worth the price.

Fenris doesn't go to exclusive restaurants often, though he can. He's certainly got the money for it. Mostly he just doesn't feel the need. Today, though, he wanted to take Inara out to some place much nicer than she normally gets to go, and thus, here at one of the most exclusive steakhouses in New York City. One that has real nice view of Stark Tower, just a short ways away. He cleans up relatively nicely, and does own some nice suits, as it turns out.

*

Inara doesn't often get to dress up. There isn't much use for resplendent Persian silks when one works at the zoo. But being taken out somewhere special has caused Inara to pull out all the stops. With Cora getting to torment a babysitter for the night, the pair walks in arm in arm, still in that blissful honeymoon stage of a new relationship. And while the birds started to flock while they left the car with the valet, she is now safe inside where (hopefully) her natural tendency to have local animals flock to her will abated.

*

There's a standing reservation at this steak house for Tony Stark for multiple reasons. It's close by, it's one of the best places in town, and they appreciate that Pepper makes a point of letting them know ahead of time when Tony actually plans to use the reservations. Well, as much ahead of time as she herself ever knows, anyway.

Tony? The reservation said eight, remember?"

*

Tony Stark looks at his watch, "So we're fashionably late, right? It's only, what, twenty five after? They'll hold it. I pay money so they'll hold it, right?"

Tony is sitting next to Pepper in the back of the Rolls, which Happy is driving to the steakhouse. He's going back and forth between Pepper and his phone, dealing with the reservations as well as lining up details for a meeting that will occur a half a world away in a few days.

*

Jeremiah and Inara get seated not too far from the door at a table that could comfortably seat four…perhaps six if two were children. The waiter comes by to deliver menus and ask if they want anything to drink. Fenris insists on a nice bottle of wine to share. "You're looking very, very nice tonight." He's broadcasting a slightly more threatening vibe than usual… mostly to keep the rats away.

*

Inara can feel that threatening vibe coming from him, but with it being a distinctly animalistic feeling, she doesn't seem to mind one bit. She smiles bashfully and looks away. "Thank you. I haven't had a chance to wear this since my cousin's wedding, so I should thank you for that too."

She leans in then; speaking softly with him after the waiter has left their table. "And thank you for being… a little scary right now. I doubt anyone needs to know exactly how many rats live in this 5 star restaurant."

*

Pepper Potts manages to quash the urge to sigh. At least they're only a minute or two away now. Even if the restaurant is always happy to wait, it grates on HER nerves from time to time. Not often, there's no way she'd survive working for Tony if that were the case, but today is just one of those days.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she had not planned on being 'asked' (read that as volunteered) to accompany him to dinner, and had mentally been looking forward to curling up on her sofa at home with a book and a bowl of Chex mix. What?

*

Fenris cants his head slightly. That's an unusual sounding car outside. And a very expensive one. Hrm. Odd. He feels like he should recognize that sound. Ah well, not horribly important. "Well you wear it quite well, Inara, so really you don't need to thank me." He says as he smiles at her and casually peruses the menu.

*

Inara smiles again, flattered that Jeremiah seems to think so highly of her. She also starts to look over the menu. Her eyes go wide momentarily as she sees the prices. Water. Water and a salad. A side salad. She glances at Jeremiah, wondering if he really can afford this place and isn't just trying to show off for her benefit. Though… if he could afford this place, it would make her mother happy.

Pepper enters the restaurant, looking rather put out. Just as Happy was pulling the Rolls up to the restaurant, Tony's phone rang, and from the moment he answered she could tell it was one of THOSE calls. What she wasn't expecting was that he insist she make use of the reservation anyway, and essentially abandoned her on the sidewalk in front of the building.

Now, she could have very easily turned and headed home, but the text she received about twenty seconds later from Tony telling her to not be such a stick in the mud finally got her to heave that sigh she'd been holding back. "Fine," she mutters to herself as the maître' D leads her past Fenris and Inara's table to an equally posh seating arrangement. "He wants me to have to wear these damned shoes this much longer; I'm ordering the most expensive thing on the entire menu." Wait, she remembers what the most expensive thing on the menu is. It includes strawberries. Pass. The second most expensive thing it is, then.

*

Fenris does look up as Pepper walks in, primarily because that's a scent he knows. "Miss Potts?" He says with a blink. That's right. The fire. And the unusual spark of borrowed magic… which he sees she still has.

Looking down at Inara's expression. "Inara… it's fine. Order whatever sounds good."

*

Inara can hear her mother's voice in her head, telling her how any man that can afford this place deserves a little consideration. She closes her eyes and does her best to push her Persian mother with the constant nagging of how she needs a good Persian husband back into the deepest recesses of her mind. Not now, maamaan! She looks up when Fenris speaks to someone and instantly recognizes her as the woman that her daughter was so… friendly with.

*

Pepper Potts blinks and pauses when she hears her name, and when she sees Fenris and Inara, she immediately smiles a hello.

"Oh! Hello, good evening. How are you both?" She offers the Maître' D an apologetic glance. Have to be sociable, after all. Even if she really just wants her Chex mix and paperback book.

*

Fenris is dressed in a very well tailored suit, simple black and white with a thin tie. His rod is nowhere in evidence though… that seems like the sort of thing a place like this would frown upon. "You are looking well. Meeting someone perhaps?" He's just being sociable himself, though ti is not exactly common to see someone comes in here alone.

*

Inara smiles graciously to Pepper. She nods her head, putting her menu down as she socializes. She rests a hand over Fen's and gives a subtle shake of her head. It's not polite to imply that a woman might be dining unaccompanied. "I hope you have been well since we saw you last, Ms. Potts."

*

Pepper Potts is about to answer Fenris' question about meeting someone when she sees Inara's subtle 'don't go there' and can't help but offer a silent thanks to the gorgeously dressed woman. "I've been fine, thank you. How have you both been?" She's maintaining politeness, so doesn't mention having 'helped' Fenris rescue people from a burning building. "And how is Cora?" Oh… she hopes she remembered the girl's name correctly.

*

"I've been well, thank you." He glances over to Inara, with a small question in his eyes. Yes, they'd been on a date, though really is seems rude to just leave Pepper to her own devices. He'll let her make that call though.

"And Cora is well also. She's with a… rather skilled babysitter tonight." Hyowta would probably laugh if she knew he'd called her that… but then, she laughs all the time.

*

Inara smiles when Pepper mentions her foster daughter. The burning building? Fenris hasn't mentioned that to her yet, probably so as not to worry her. While she may have a power, she tends to think of herself as entirely normal. Because everyone talks to animals and has them talk back. She nods to one of the chairs at the table, offering it silently to Pepper should she want it, but not bringing it up should she not. She hides a smile as Fenris talks about Hyowta in that fashion, like she's a person.

*

Pepper Potts actually, for a moment, considers Inara's offer to join them. No, that would be rude. They're here on a date. "You'll have to tell her hello for me. Thank you for the offer, but I probably shouldn't. I don't want to intrude." She's already even taking a small step back from their table.

*

Fenris has no desire to force anything on either Pepper or Inara. But if Inara is comfortable he has no problems. Pack meals are often like this though… he hasn't had one in some thousand years. His head cants slightly to Pepper, repeating the offer but not making her actually decline it if she wishes to disengage.

*

“Ms. Potts, I've never been here before, but you seem quite familiar with this place. Could you recommend something good?" Inara beckons the redhead over, opening the menu. "Perhaps you could let us offer to buy you dinner after my daughter's rude behavior last time? Unless, of course, you are busy. I am sorry if we are keeping you."

*

Pepper Potts considers for another moment, then nods to the Maître' D, accepting Inara and Fenris' invitation and stepping closer again to claim the offered seat. "What do you have a preference for? This place is a steakhouse, but nothing on their menu is not amazing."

Well, she can't vouch for anything with strawberries, but everything else… "And actually, if you would prefer, this can be my treat." Or, you know, Tony's treat. Since he went ran off and all.

*

"Tony… ah yes, Mister Stark. I was considering the steak and lobster bisque myself. It used to be quite good ten years ago." At which point, by looking at him, he'd have been twenty ish. Hard to imagine him affording this at twenty. "But I'd be happy to pick it up, if you'd like. Or your boss, if he's going to make it up. I was just assuring Inara that anything she'd like would be fine."

He glances over. "She's right, Inara. Everything here is wonderful."

*

As gracious as she was to request Pepper to join them, Fenris knows how uncomfortable Inara is around other people. She tries though, she always tries. "I will let the pair of you argue over who is to pay," she teases. She doesn't seem to object to strawberries though. "So, tell us about yourself, Ms. Potts. Are you native to New York? What do you do here?"

*

Pepper Potts leans over to point out that single most expensive dish with strawberries to Inara, then quirks an amused eyebrow at Fenris. Maybe he's old money and came here with his parents as a child. It's entirely possible.

"Oh, not originally, no. But I've lived here long enough now that I feel like I might as well be a native. I work for Stark Industries as an executive assistant." Sure, Fenris already mentioned Tony, but she's not one to brag about who she knows and how. "I'm originally from Connecticut, if that helps."

*

Having made his selection Fenris sets the menu down. The waiter comes over to take their order and he waits until it's all sorted before he continues. "Ahhh. Connecticut. Nice place." He smiles. Of course, he's thinking of it two hundred plus years ago, but apparently he liked it.

"I take it you like the City? Inara and I have both recently been looking for a new place to live. Someplace more suitable to raise Cora than our apartments in M-Town. Do you perhaps have any suggestions?"

*

Looking over at the menu item that Pepper gestures to, Inara looks at her as if doubtful she really should. "It does look delicious but… " She doesn't have to finish the sentence. It's the price. She looks to Fenris, her brows rising. Should she? She doesn't want to offend the nice woman but… Fenris has seen where Inara lives. She spends most of her pay on animal food to feed the strays that come to her. Finally, when the waiter comes over, she lets herself be convinced and requests the item, hoping it's as good as it should be at the price.

"I'm from Miami," she shares with Pepper, happy for a distraction. I moved here a few years after 9/11. I wanted to help out."

*

Pepper Potts requests the second most expensive item on the menu, and is not surprised to see the Maître' D intercept the waiter. As long as Tony's maintained reservations here, the Maître' D has taken her strawberry allergy into account and made extra sure that everyone else is equally mindful. She considers Fenris' question about a new home.

"Well, I'm guessing with as much energy as Cora has, you'll want some place with a good-sized yard." Yes, she really did just refer to the little girl's uniqueness so simply and easily. "I can't think of any places like that offhand, but I know an excellent realtor that can very likely find you exactly what you need." She rea… "oh. I have his number in my phone. In my bag." That is currently in the coat check area with messages from Tony causing the phone to blip every minute or two. "Don't let me forget and I'll be happy to share his number with you."

*

"Any advice you'd care to give would be helpful." Fenris says, smiling. "I moved to New York from Kansas City." About eighty years ago. And he doesn't say where he's from because… that's not restaurant conversation. Inara knows though.

"If the home were near the zoo that would be ideal, but whatever can be arranged. I'd be grateful for the contact information. So, if I may ask, do you like working at Stark Industries?"

*

"Somewhere close to the Bronx Zoo would be ideal. The less time I need to take to get to work means the more time I can spend with Cora. And yes, I think a backyard would be essential. But even a small backyard would be better than the apartments we have now. A room of her own would also be a wonderful bonus." She arches a brow over to Fenris. She didn't actually know about Kansas City. She does know about the other place though.

*

Pepper Potts hms. "Well, if anyone can find the perfect place for you, Devon can. Just, please don't let his rather flamboyant mannerisms put you off. He might be boisterous, but he knows the properties in New York better than anyone this side of the Mayor. Just make sure to tell him exactly what you want in no uncertain terms." She smiles at Inara reassuringly, and then looks at Fenris again. "It's never dull, that's for sure. I have friends from college that lament about how dull their lives are, and I honestly can't ever say that about my life."

*

"Not many people get to do the things you do, I imagine." From interact with Tony Stark to use a wind rod to put out a fire. Goodness, but she does have an active life. Drinks come, and food comes shortly thereafter, piping hot and as scrumptious as it is expensive. Which is to say, very."
