It takes about thirty minutes, but May and Coulson finally arrive at pre-selected Starbucks. May glaces around the place and picks Trent out easily enough, but she waits to see if Coulson can do similar. She's betting that Trent's tendency to make himself look uninteresting will be in full force at the moment, but she also knows Phil. And she's mentally betting with herself that he'll see right through it.

*

Jericho's tendency to be boring is in full force. Nothing, from the way he sits to the way he sips his coffee says anything other than 'nothing to see here, just another guy.' It's a skill, one that's saved his life several times. More recently it's saved the lives of others as well. A certain Pepper Potts doesn't even know the first time they met. Which is probably a good thing considering how the night ended.

He's working, though thanks to his ability to do so internally, it doesn't look like he's doing anything but drinking coffee. Boringly.

*

This is not Phil's first rodeo, or meeting with someone who knows something. It also helps he's actually seen Trent before, so he picks him out easily, but lets May lead the way. For some reason, everyone's going ga ga over this guy, but Coulson remains unconvinced as to why he's all of a sudden on the cover the SHIELD equivalent of Tiger Beat. Not the first one, certainly not the last. He picks him out of the crowd and tells May to lead the way quietly.

*

Melinda May nods to Phil and leads the way over to Trent's table. "Hey," she says by way of greeting before claiming a seat for herself. She'll get a beverage later. Maybe. Their coffees gross her out and the teas are just … weak. Well, at least Trent doesn't look like … well, as Darcy put it, like Freddy Kreuger.

*

Really, Jeri's not here for the drinks either. Fortunately yes, his burns have vanished, along with the attendant burn scars. And he doesn't start when May plops down at his table, having been warned. Thank goodness.

"Hey May…" The hacker says quietly. "What's this about. You said you wanted to introduce someone?" He looks about, though not too obviously, to see who that might be.

*

Coulson is standing behind May, he himself looking fairly generic, as is ability to do the same. He doesn't look like a top agent from a government agency - he could be anything from an insurance salesman to some middle management schmo. He leaves it to May to make the intial introduction. Obviously, if the guy doesn't know who he is, he'll keep the mystery for just that much longer.

*

"Trent, this is Phil Coulson. Coulson, this is Trent, the subject of the latest water cooler gossip." Which coming from May could mean just about anything. But then, Trent already knows what the gossip is about.

*

Jericho sighs. He'd really rather SHIELD, with the exception of May, not talk about him at all. "Yeah, that's me. Nice to meet you Mister Coulson." The hacker offers his hand, deliberately leaving off Agent. May didn't like being 'Agented' in public so he's betting Phil would appreciate the same consideration.

"So what brings you out here to meet little ol' me?"

*

Coulson nods, "I don't know about Water Cooler gossip, but you definitely make interrogations interesting." he says, voice even. He slips into one of the seats next to May. He doesn't react to being called Mister, but probably thinks it's quaint. He takes a sip from a travel mug. Either he's quick on the draw or he brings his own. In either event, he's not approached by the help about it.

*

Melinda May turns to Trent at this point. "I have a meeting scheduled with Director Fury, Trent. This mess WILL get sorted out one way or another. And Hill will deal with the final verdict one way or another, or May will make sure the depdir understands. She's had about enough of this soap opera level crap.

*

Jericho nods. "Good to hear. I'm tired of looking over my shoulder for two well funded, relentless espionage organizations." His eyes cut over to Coulson and seem to assess the man. Okay… yeah. He looks like a shoe salesmen. But if May knows him from work he's probably a lot more than he appears to be.

"So nice to meet you Coulson. Take a load off. I'm just working on a few things. You were in on my little interrogation, mmm?" The way he says it makes it clear he was far from pleased that this was the only way to get his information out. "I hope you enjoyed that. What brings you two on down tonight? Anything in particular or just… target of opportunity?"

*

Coulson nods, "I was on the other side of the mirror. Observing, mostly. They like to have a couple of people not involved with the investigation observe so things stay impartial. For what it's worth, I'm on board." he says, matter of factly, and inclines his head towards May, "She just wanted to touch base with you so you knew where things were at, so you knew she was keeping up on her end of things."

*

Melinda May nods slightly. "Also, I promise to not let Lewis at you again." The recruit is in enough trouble for calling HER Super Nanny. That's totally Coulson's nickname. "Is there anything that Coulson or I can answer for you while we're here?" Within reason, of course.

*

At that, Jericho smiles. "I trust May, Mister Coulson." He takes a sip of coffee. "To be frank, she's the only one I've met in your office that I do trust. No offense. I trust… pretty slowly." No. He trusts very slowly. And that trust remains fragile for a long time. It's not been wrongly observed before that this is one reason people don't trust him. It's a vicious cycle kind of thing.

He shrugs.

"I'd like to know a bit more about this team I had to promise to help, if that's something you can discuss here." The hacker wasn't super happy about being strong armed into 'The Initiative' but needs must and he's made worse compromises. Mostly he just wants to know what he's gotten himself into.

*

Coulson shakes his head, "No offense. I haven't given you much cause to trust me yet. That comes with time." he says, pretty matter of factly. It's true. This is May's show. He's just here to lend support to his colleague and if need be, demonstrate he can be trusted the same way as she is. But that usually comes from something unfortunate happening, and Coulson would just as much hold on off that going down for the time being.

*

Melinda May can only shake her head as well. "At this point in time, Trent, I know about as much about that Initiative as you do." Possibly less. "That is one of the things I fully intend on asking Director Fury about in the meeting." And, she'd be inclined to hug Coulson if it were anything that either of them were prone to doing normally. Saying up front that trust is a slow thing to earn will resonate with Trent. She knows it.

*

She's not wrong. Coulson gets a ghost of a smile from the frankly exhausted looking hacker. It's been a trying few days for Jericho. Things seem to be slowing down again but he knows that it's only a matter of time, which is itself exhausting in a way.

"Secrets within secrets, mmmm? Well I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. So, Mister Coulson, May has spoken highly of you in the past. I know your work is a bit… mmmm, beyond my clearance level, but I take it you've worked together for a while. Like, perhaps, longer than Manning and Pezzini?" Given that it's only been a few years for them, that shouldn't be hard.

*

Melinda May finds it interesting that Trent would try to compare Coulson and her with Manning and Pezzini. And, she's equally interested in hearing what Phil has to say. They haven't worked as a team in rather a long time, after all.

*

Coulson shrugs, "It's a matter of relativity. I wouldn't say we've worked together longer than they have, but we've put in more hours..so our connection is a little stronger." he says, taking another sip from his travel mug.

*

"Mmmmmm." Jericho nods, seeming to turn that over. There isn't anything those two won't do for one another, he's fairly sure. To be saying that May and Coulson have a stronger bond is actually a point in their favor.

"I see. Interesting. Well…" He smiles a bit thinly. "If it sets your minds at ease for whomever you may have to report back to, I'm just doing some network tracing and financial work. Not planning on raiding any hospitals or crashing satellites into certain people's offices. Promise." Hand goes over his heart even.

"Can I get either of you something?" His disposable income is pretty variable, but he's got a twenty or three in his wallet. Jeri wasn't expecting to need much tonight.

*

"Nothing related to us, I'm sure." And again, if it doesn't directly affect SHIELD, May doesn't want to know about it. Then, after a moment of consideration, she shakes her head no at the offer of something.

*

Coulson holds up his travel mug, "I'm all set. I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to coffee. It's one of my best friends, aside from May here." he says, giving the woman a smirk. "I don't have to report back to anyone about being here. Not part of my caseload. I get the weird stuff."

*

"Oh good." Jericho grins. "No nothing related to you. Well, sort of. We had a situation related to that raid, but it's resolved now." Jericho sighs. "Has there been anymore trouble on my account, May? I know some of your fellow… suited workers were getting a bit huffy about your involvement with me." Poor choice of words considering what was actually said, but Jeri doesn't know that.

*

Melinda May looks at Trent flatly. "That's why I scheduled the meeting with Fury. They're acting like it's some sort of high school popularity thing, and you're Christian Slater dating one of the Heathers. And I’m sorry, I won't stand for that."
