Spoiled For Choice

Summary:
September 06 2014: Spoiler, Aspect and Storm hit an illegal genetics lab in Gotham.

Gotham, Otisburg

Not a nice place in a not a nice place. Just perfect for running an illegal medical operation.

Jericho hates Gotham. With a flaming passion. However the illegal genetics labs that he's been hunting often operate out of there because the law enforcement climate is, shall we say, much friendlier. So close to all the chemical plants here in Otisburg, it's easy for a small black market medical operation to go overlooked. Well, by the police. Jericho? He doesn't overlook much and while he's got lots of data on this particular snake's head already, more never hurts. Besides, these labs are hurting people.

At present he's kneeling down on a rooftop overlooking a squat, derelict looking warehouse. His eyes are glowing red, as he filters through thermal information, tracking the occupant's locations and activities. Odd that the X-ers haven't shown up on this one yet… that he knows of.

*

It's almost as if thinking about them is all it takes to make them appear. A wind kicks up behind Jericho and the woman he has seen before that identifies herself as Storm steps down onto the roof, her arms outstretched as her dual cape holds the wind. Her glowing white eyes fade into their crystal blue as she regards Jericho and nods to him politely. "Hello again, Jericho. I see that the crumbs led you here as well?"

*

Following people is much more interesting, if you catch sight of them, and Jericho has a tail. A petite figure clad in an eggplant colored cape with a cowl. Storm's arrival is interesting, and the cowl tilts to the side as she watches them, finally stepping out of the shadows, onto their rooftop. "The roofs here are getting crowded." The observation is aimed at Jericho, her face hidden behind the black mask she wears, but her body screams the snark, her arms crossed, her weight resting through one leg.

*

Jericho rather abruptly flushes with amber circuit-like glowing lighs shining through his shirt on his back, arms and neck. A pair of wings sprout from his back long enough for him to flap them once and then make the tip of one wave in Spoiler's direction. "Plenty of other rooftops to pick from." He says without taking his eyes off the building.

"Hello Storm. Yes, following bread crumbs as it were. Mine were digital. How'd you find this place?"

*

Storm says, "Small chemical sniffing robot moths, keyed to the specific signature of the virus. It red flagged this place. I thought I would come and check it out before calling for the cavalry."

Her head turns when the other woman presents herself, neither defensive nor friendly, but waiting to see what she does before making a decision."

*

"Reeeeally? Man, I wondered what those funny things over there were." Spoiler gives Storm a nod, a grin under the mask barely apparent. "What did you find? A bakery?" She chooses a chimney pot to perch on, settling there with her legs crossed, her elbows on her knees, watching Jericho with obvious amusement. "I met your lovely lady friend's buddy again."

*

"My lovely lady friend? Ah, you mean Pepper. No she's not my lady friend. Just a friend." Jericho smiles. He actually does have a rather lovely lady friend, er, well one could make a case for it anyway. They're still feeling things out but that's what it feels like to him. Anyway, Pepper's not it.

"Well… I was about to go knock on the door. Either of you two feel like coming?" Jericho's definition of knocking is probably something Storm can take a guess at. Spoiler… perhaps. If she's been paying attention.

*

Storm looks away from the pair and down at the plant instead. Jericho's love life is none of her business, nor any of her interest. She came here for one reason and one alone. Her eyes glow white and she lets a fog roll in. It's Gotham. A fog won't be seen as unlikely and the heavy dampness in the air makes it a simple thing. "Lead the way, Jericho. I will be right behind you."

*

"You don't think she is a lady? Man, that's harsh." She puts her chin in her hand, watching Jericho for a moment before she shrugs, hopping from her perch. "Nice fog!" Snark to interest and enthusiasm in 0.1seconds, that is Spoiler, and she grins, "Why not. I didn't have anything else to do tonight." Her face turns towards the warehouse, her head tilting in a thoughtful moment.

*

"Wonderful. Meet you at the door."

Jericho's wings flare and he drops four stories into the fog before they wink out. Then he stalks over to the door in question. The warehouse looks derelict but there's a very secure, suspiciously strong locked door to it. The hacker produces a putty like substance and begins to place little dabs of it about the doorframe, whistling as he does. "Go tell Aunt Rodie… Go tell Aunt Rodie…"

*

Storm chuckles as she, like Jericho, steps off the roof and lets the wind gently carry her down to the ground. Her arms stretch out, the wind catching in her cape and causing it to billow. She closes her eyes and feels the air currents around the building, to feel if there is any other bodies around.

*

Spoiler steps forward, watching them jump and glide, before she swings down, a hand hooking around the drain, swinging to land on a window-ledge, swinging to land on the ground safely. She turns to look at Storm, her head tilted as she watches the other woman, "So what do you two think is in there?" A faint edge to the voice, perhaps revealing the youth of the person behind the mask.

*

Now Jericho is wiring up det-cord to an electric blasting Cap. "An illegal genetics laboratory, related to an awful mutant destroying virus, I'm fairly sure. Plug your ears." He hits a button. Several small explosions go off and door falls inward. Jericho grins and his traces flush blue as he pulls out a sidearm. "Knock knock." In he goes. The interior of the building is wide open and mostly empty. There's a small maze of walls ahead from which is emanating a thrum and the glow of electronics.

*

Storm opens her eyes, confident in the fact that there is no one else outside the building, though they are still glowing white. She holds herself with a regal air as she looks down on the other woman, not in attitude but rather in height. Some may ask why a woman who is already nearly six feet tall feels a need to wear high heels. But then, all super heroic women seem to. It's a fashion trend. "We believe they might be using this facility to create a virus that currently targets mutants only. If they discover the efficaciousness of this virus, they may use it to start affecting other 'annoyances' as well."

Ororo plugs her ears when told to. She's used to that sort of entry from her friend Gambit. She could have attempted to break in the quiet way, but explosions make men happy. She looks into the building before entering and slowly nods her head, gesturing to Jericho that she will be behind him.

*

"Huh." A distinctly unhappy sound from the other woman, her eyes narrowing behind that mask. "So uncool…" She plugs her ears, watching the explosions with interest, and she follows the pair, her gaze moving over the rooms, lingering on the electronics with interest.

*

"That's one way to put it." Jericho's cants his head, small electronic runes in some odd language (demonic, though it seems unlikely that anyone here is versed in it) on his face and near his ears. "Incoming. Sounds like half a dozen."

Sure enough security comes charging around the corner, holding some kind of blue energy rifle. The first one just gets shot in the gut twice. Price of being the first in line. Then a vaguely lupine field of light springs into existence around the hacker. One seven and a half feet tall with wicked looking claws.

*

The door is still open from the explosion, allowing for a gust of wind to sweep into the room and hit the foes with gale force winds. She looks over to the thrumming area and nods her head towards it. "I think that is our target.'

*

"Wow…" The mumble is soft, as the man transposes into a seven and a half foot tall critter, and then Spoiler is moving, a graceful figure landing kicks and punches onto her choice of security, landing them on the floor, the crunch of landing bringing him into unconsciousness. She uses the wall, running up it to evade a strike, kicking the man in the face on the way down, "You think?" Sarcasm, "Maybe we're just interrupting their teaparty…"

*

"I think you're right." Jericho moves fast in that power field. He is' in among the knot before they get more than a couple shots on his field (though Storm and Spoiler may hear a grunt of pain). The blue were-wolf thing lashes out in a flurry of claws. One of the security gets seized upon and hurled in Storm's direction. Another gets kicked right over to Spoiler. Special delivery.

*

Further in, alarms blare. "Ugh. Storm, they'll have automated defenses and they have a backup power generator here. I don't suppose you'd be obliging enough to blow all their fuses?"

*

The security member that is being sent her way causes her to spin and kick a roundhouse right into his gut. She looks to the windows of the building. Should she need to, she can call down the elements, but really it seems a bit like overkill at the moment. She strides over towards the thrumming room.

Spoiler rolls, ducking under a punch, rising to land a fist into the face of the security hurled in her direction, letting him land on the floor, unconscious, "See, you don't have to kill them." The comment to Jericho has snark in it, and she spins, kicking her final security guard in the face, a kick that throws him back into the wall, a trail of blood marring the whiteness of it as he passes out.

*

Spoiler likely doesn't know that hit's by weapons of this caliber burn the ever living hell out of the hacker. It's a side effect of whatever he is. He's well protected, but not invulnerable like this. The next security guard gets slammed into the wall. Three or four times. There's an indent by the time Jeri's done.

"I don't always kill. I just don't hesitate to when it's warranted." He's also not gentle. His attacks might well have killed another, simply because he's not concerned with whether they live or die. "Okay. There's more coming. Into the complex Spoiler. I'm going to close it off and I'll catch up."

*

Further ahead Storm has come to room with a lot of medical lab equipment and computers. There's a pair of doors on either side, both closed and locked at the moment. She seems to have caught a balding, slightly overweight man in a lab coat in the act of locking them.

*

"Well that is reassuring…" Sarcasm comes as standard, and Spoiler turns, stepping over the bodies to head into the complex. "This place is interesting…" Curiosity, thy name is Spoiler, and she tails Storm, trailing behind the other woman like an overeager puppy.

*

Storm sees the old man in the lab coat and sneaks up behind him in a startling display of stealth for a woman of her stature and shocking appearance. She wraps her arm about his neck, choking off his air supply and letting him down gently to the ground. "May the Goddess show you the errors of your ways when you wake," she tells the unconscious man. Taking his keys from him, she opens the door to the lab, getting out a camera and taking pictures of everything. History and plants, and she's your girl. Lockpicks and picking pockets, she knows exactly what you need. Computers and medical supplies? Yeah, not her strong suit.

*

There's a muted thud and the sound of what may be collapsing wall and roof from the direction of the entrance. Jericho seems to have collapsed it. As he makes his way over to where Storm and Spoiler are, the lupine power field no longer in evidence. He still has a gun though.

In room number one there are a number of computers and bits of lab equipment doing genetic sequencing. It's a bit technical but all of the work seems to be focused on permutations of the x-gene complex. Room number 2 however… contains mutants. Dead ones, at a casual glance. It's cold in here and there are four people on tables, two men, two women, all obviously inhuman.

*

Storm doesn't just keep lockpicks in her gauntlets. No, they house all manner of useful things, like a USB key, which she promptly slots into one of the computers to upload as much of it's information onto the key as possible. Something for the science types among the Red Team to figure out. As that is working, she continues to explore and upon seeing the dead mutants on the tables, she gasps in horror.

"Sweet Goddess! No." She heads over to the tables, checking for any signs of life before assuming they are dead. Pulse, breathing, eye dilation. Anything.

*

Jericho catches up to Storm just in team to hear her scream. He's in the doorway instantly with a gun, concerned abotu some trap or attack… and then… "Oh…" The gun goes back down as he comes in to look. Two of the mutants are indeed dead, however a woman with green skin is alive - barely - and one of the men also seems to be alive, though he's at death's door. He needs help immediately if he's to survive.

"Damn it. Live testing. I was afraid of this."

*

Spoiler steps forward, following Storm, and then pausing at the sight of the tables, her eyes widening. "Oh no." A soft whisper, the horror too much to respond to. "No! How could they!?" She steps forward, reaching Storm's side, her eyes wide behind the mask. "Do we call someone? What do we do?"

*

Storm takes out a communicator and starts to see if any of the X-Men are able to respond. "We get them out of here and to a hospital immediately. Do either of you have a vehicle we can transport them with? Or… can steal one readily?" Killing may not be something that Ororo is comfortable with, but stealing? That's a completely different ball of wax.

*

"What I am doing." Jericho is leaning over the computers as they display (and upload) data at an astonishing rate. "You've got live ones? Yeah, I'll bring a car around. Hang on." He doesn't look like he's going to get a car… but seems fairly confident that one is coming. "They're working on some kind of gene splicing project. It's a bit technical for me. Looks like it involved extracting DNA from… very specific organs." Like the liver. Or the heart.

"I'm going to melt these computers and blow the building. Let’s wrap it up."

*

Storm goes to get her USB key to hand over to Red Team and then goes to carry the woman. She looks her over carefully before lifting her, making sure that doing so isn't going to cause more harm. "We are here to save you. We will get you to aid. Stay with us, stay strong. Just a little longer now." Her voice is soft and matriarchal. "I am ready whenever you are, Jericho. And you, thank you as well. Your assistance was very welcome."

*

The nod is quick, her head turning as if Spoiler would go and fetch the car now, herself, but then Jericho assures them one is coming. "Can we destroy their data? I mean, if we set them back…" The snark is gone, replaced by anger, as the young woman turns from the bodies, from the people lying there, her glance at Jericho stormy, and then she follows Storm's lead, falling silent.

*

Jericho looks back and forth between Storm, Spoiler and the doctor as he overclocks the computers. "That's the head doctor here. Emmanual Velazquez. He's got intimate knowledge of the gene sequencing project and a good working knowledge of the M-Virus."

He leaves it unsaid as he hauls the man up and onto his shoulder (his traces lighting up blue again) that he could rebuild the project even with the loss of the data because he knows the methods invovled. More worrisome is his knowledge of the virus, though. Jericho has been systematically destroying all knowledge of that virus as best he can which includes people who understand it well enough to remake it. He wants to see what the mutant and the kid will say though.

*

Overhead, the clouds thicken and grow black, thunder rumbling in the air. Storms eyes are aglow she summons the thunderhead. "There will be little left of these computers when I am through, little one, worry not about that. Do you think you can carry the other mutant?" She looks over to Jericho, "Or do you think you can carry two?"

She starts to stride out, noting the doctor in Jericho's arms. "Might I suggest you take him to SHIELD for detainment? Rather then the other option that I am certain you are considering?"

*

"I can take one." The quietness of Spoiler's voice is obvious, the snark drained from her, as she takes the smaller of the two figures. She hesitates, before she nods at Jericho, her troubled face hidden, "I think that is a better path…" Agreement with Storm, and she turns to the door, heading out with the figure hefted in her arms, no easy task.

*

"I can…" Jericho pauses as Spoiler gets the other. "If you trust SHIELD with this. Granted, I gave them a sample of the Stage Three Viroid already, but not the really infectious one." By the way he says it, he's not sure he does trust SHIELD with this, not necessarily because of SHIELD itself but because he's seen evidence that their secured data isn't all that secure. It got twenty good rangers killed in Kush. He'll be damned if he's not going to think about it before entrusting them with information that could result in the deaths of millions.

And he's probably damned anyway, so a voice has told him.

*

A silent Spoiler deposits her burden into the car, her silence unusual, and then slips away, leaving them to finish the work here. Things to think about.

*

Storm looks remarkably calm about the deaths. Inside, she wants to be angry, she wants to grieve for these poor souls, but she cannot. She keeps her emotions in check, tied down tightly. "If the rumors are true, they have a prison for super powered individuals. He may be only human, but he may need to be detained in a place with that sort of security. For all our sakes. I am not saying that I trust SHIELD. I am saying they have a resource that would be valuable in this case."

As she leaves the building, a crack of lightning forks into the building, aiming for the bank of computers.

*

"Then you can deliver him." Jericho says. Not unkindly but rather matter of factly. "I'm not convinced he'll remain under wraps if I do and I don't know if I can in good conscious do it knowing that's the case." He quirks a smile up. "Besides, they don't like me much. Can't imagine why." A black SUV with no driver is waiting for them. The hacker gets the two sick mutants situated. "First things first though. Hospital. There's one a few miles away. I may not be observing the laws of the road. Buckle up."

*

Storm says, "Can you think of a better place that he can be detained? I do not wish to kill him." The building starts to glow from within, an amber light shining from the windows as flames start to lick at the walls. She loads the woman into the back of the van and helps Spoiler with the one she carries, treating them with care and kindness. "Illyana could imprison him in Limbo perhaps? You are close to her considering her pet was with you when we last met.""

*

"Perhaps." Jericho's conversational tone is somewhat at odd with the way he peels out and drives with urgency toward the hospital. "Though I question at that point whether it would be kinder to kill him. I don't mind Limbo, but being a prisoner there at the mercy of Illyana's pets doesn't precisely sound like a merciful thing." He throws the car into a turn and peels out toward the hospital.

*

Storm holds onto the handle above the door as Jericho drives. She doesn't seem at all put out by either the speed or the maneuvers. Having been with the X-Men as long as she has, this sort of driving is actually par for the course on most days. "This is true. Illyana will tell you that I do not kill. I am sorry if you feel you need to, but if so, I will take him to SHIELD to be detained rather then have his life taken from him."

*

"If I have to shoot him later, we're gonna have words about this." Jericho mutter. He's not convinced it won't come to that, sadly. "For now though, we've got some people to help. Hospital just up ahead. I presume you don't wanna be seen dropping them off?"

*

"If you have to shoot him later, it will be not just you I will be having words with." She looks at the hospital and shakes her head. "No, I would prefer not to be involved with that. People will ask questions. Do you mind if I leave you here? But, the prisoner? I suppose I could take him with me now. He will not like the flight much."

"Good. He's killed a lot of innocent people." Jericho's eyes narrow. "I'll stay here with the vics until they get seen. Then I'm clearing out myself. Maybe send Roberto or someone to follow up. I'm kind of a risk myself."

*

Storm nods her head, getting out of the van and heading to the back to get out the doctor. She grabs him by his belt, making sure she has a firm grip before the winds pick up around her and lift her up off the ground, tugging her victim with her. She soars off into the night
