Keith Visits The Clocktower

November 2, 2014: Keith patrols Gotham and stops for a rest on the Clocktowers roof… and speaks with Oracle.

Clocktower - Gotham

A locally famous landmark, the Gotham Clock Tower is located in the Central Business District. Tours haven't run in years, though, since the building was bought out by a group of bird-lovers known as the Nightingale Society. Still, it's a well-known part of the Downtown skyline. From the outside it looks unused, but the clock is clearly maintained as it still runs on time, and now and again people can be seen coming and going. The bottom floor looks mostly disused, with a long hallway ending in a bookshelf full of coffee table books about birds. To either side of the hall are sparsely furnished rooms. The walls show illustrations of local Gotham feathery sorts, and charts on bird migrations. Cabinets store various bits of bird-watching equipment.

The doors to the stairs require a key card to access, probably to deter vandalism. The upper floors are only accessible by a secret elevator. The doorways to access it them the stairs have been bricked over and drywalled. On the living quarters floor, each door requires a keycard and voice recognition, except for the door to the training facility at the end of the hall, which requires palm, optical, and voice recognition. The top floor, however, is the most secure of all.

The pale glow of the four massive translucent clock-faces dominate the four compass points of the lair, casting everything in a warm light by night, and cool light by day. the natural brick walls of the buildings exterior are left visible on one wall while the others are painted a pristine white. The ceilings have recessed and track lighting, and the floors are smooth pale wood. There is a lounge area and even a kitchen, as well as other facilities here. The insulation around the top floor is meant to keep scanners and eavesdropping equipment from being able to image what's inside.

Mainframes and back-up generators line most of the walls in rooms of clear glass kept from overheating with with high-tech coolant systems. In front of one clock face is an enormous computer system laid out on a long, custom desk, lower than average, just the right height for Oracle's wheelchair. There is a command chair for use when needed, which slides on rails along the length of the desk. A huge bank of monitors are arrayed in a horseshoe shape around the desk, with the ability to form one large picture or individual smaller ones.

Mood Music:

Gotham, Gotham. A town so corrupt that they had to name it twice.

That doesn't really work, but let's flow with it. Ever since their move to the Castle, Vorpal's apartment has remained more or less unoccupied- still set aside and paid for just in case there is need for such a location, but nobody lives there right now.

That doesn't keep everybody's favorite cheshire cat (debatable title) from doing his patrols, though. Tonight the crime fare has been light, which is a miracle for Gotham. He decides, then, to take an early lunch (dinner?) break. In the middle of his aerial trapeze swings, he decides that that clocktower looks like just the place to rest. Landing gracefully, he finds a good outcropping where he can sit, and then take the small backpack off his back.

There really isn't much that gets past Oracles surveillance systems, and the annoying Cheshire Cat (is that a better title?) that perches on an outcropping, looking distinctly like a gargoyle sets off some some of the Clocktower perimeter alarms.

Oracle, it being nighttime, is in her monitoring room watching the Gotham Going Ons when those alarms sound. Frowning, she moves the video feeds for the Clocktower to center screen and then smirks to herself as she recognises the Purple Cheshire perching there. Bringing up Keiths Comms channel, she waits.

Hamburgers. He was eating a hamburger- because Gar had made dinner-to-go, and it was a yummy hamburger. He's quite careful on how he lays everything out- so that nothing falls over the edge. There's a small bottle of water, the hamburger, and a cupcake.

Not exactly the dinner of champions, but it'll hold him over for now. Today had been a more or less awesome day- having gotten his name and his team's name in the news for helping to foil an assassination attempt on the Senator who was trying to push an important constitutional amendment to include metas and mutants under equal protection.

"All in all… not too shabby," He says to himself. "Maybe enough to make up for that awful mess with the Joker…"

Watching Keith eat on the roof of her building, Oracles green eyes dance with mirth. Particularly how he lays everything out so neatly. Activating the comms channel on Keiths phone, Oracle speaks "Keith, this is Oracle. Are you there. Over." OK, this was a little mean but it's going to be fun.

He had laid out everything so neatly. When Oracle's voice comes up, he starts and… well, there goes the hamburger. Some alleycat below will probably be thanking Oracle for that one.

"Er… hi, Oracle, this is Keith. I'm in Gotham." He didn't really have a good idea of what Oracle's capabilities were, he had a vague concept of them as an information broker and hacker, but to what extent… well, he really didn't know.

"Good to hear from you," He says, a little mournfully as he glances downards. Gar made rather good burgers.

"I'm so sorry about the hamburger, Keith. Or should I say Vorpal tonight?" Not metres from where Keith is sitting, the redheaded woman is laughing. "Yes, I can see you're in Gotham, on the Clocktower no less. What brings you this way?"

The flickering light from her monitors reflect eerily in her glasses. Whilst she may be talking, and teasing Vorpal, she's still watching and monitoring everything that's going on.

Vorpal blinks. How could Oracle see him like that? "Either works. I don't have a secret identity, you know. I tried at the very start to keep it separate… but when I decided to date Gar, I realized that since he doesn't have a secret identity… well. It would get complicated. And since I have no family, it really isn't that much of an inconvenience."

"This way? You mean the clocktower?" He looks around at it, and then reaches for his bottle of water.

"Gotham way, really, but specifically the Clocktower, yes." Oracle actually chuckles across the line. "I suppose congratulations are in order for the Titans part in saving the Senator. Well done."

As they are talking, sirens can be heard in the distance, getting closer and closer to where Vorpal perches.

"Don't worry, about those sirens, they aren't for you." Oracle says. In the Clocktower, the woman is tracking them. Someone has called in an attempted robbery.

"Heh, thanks. I'm just glad the Titans got some positive PR. So far nobody has linked the Joker mess to me yet… I am afraid they might and that it will look bad on the Titans."

He takes a sip from his bottle. "The clocktower? Heh, well, it reminds me if my grandmother. Maimeo had this big, and I mean big photo of the Albert Memorial Clocktower in her room. She was from Belfast, see. Our family came here during The Troubles, as she told me. I never really knew why she was so attached to that tower, she never really talked much about it. But every time I pass by here, I kind of get a little sentimental. It's definitely more… well, gothy, but it's a clocktower, and it makes me remember."

"Go', if she knew what I was up to, she'd have a heart attack. Totally."

The woman inside the Clocktower smiles at Keith's remembrance. "Well The Joker is a formidable opponent, and …." Oracle lets that statement fade. "I'm sure your Grandmother, whilst she might have a heart attack, would be ultimately proud of what you're doing, Keith."

Those sirens are drawing nearer and nearer, and they're joined by another set further out… Oracles eyes check her systems… interesting…

"Eh, I wouldn't know. I have a pretty good notion that most of my family, were they alive, would disown me over the fact that I'm with a guy-" his ears perk.

Swivel, swivel. "That's another three units. Are you sure it's not something important?"

"That's a robbery in progress" Oracle is a cool as they come as she gives the location "Can you get there?"

The monitors show the details of the crime and Oracle relays them dispassionately to the Keith as she sees them.

"Am I absolultely adorable?" Vorpal says, and falls off the tower. Or, that is, he dives off it and begins to use his Rabbit Hole technology (not really a technology) to head towards the coordinates. "On my way. Will be there in three… four minutes tops."

"Yes, ok. You're absolutely adorable." Oracles voice carries across the waves. And the woman, who is Oracle, smiles rather fondly as she watches another of her assets go to save the day.
