This meeting has been planned since Agent Triplett dropped the 'Mikhail Rasputin' bomb in the halls of SHIELD, and the pair had a 'little chat' in his office. It was Agent Triplett's responsibility to organize this meeting; that was his instruction, as was 'to do his homework'.

Settled in his office now, the Director of SHIELD is actually seated behind his desk, the screens now dark. Lights are on, and there is definitely someone home; he's just letting everything stew and see what is served.

~

Natasha made her way in, past the biometric scanners, through the variable security passcodes. For a change she did not even play at bypassing any, Nick was getting sneakier in his age, or maybe Natasah was finally feeling a little slow down on tech. She walks into the office, "Director, good evening." She states in a smooth tone. turning to give Triplett a nod.

~

Agent Triplett might have been the one to drop the name Rasputin to Fury, but it was May that asked him to approach the director in the first place. And after hearing about how the younger agent basically got his ass handed to him for simply trying to follow proper channels, she's not letting Trip take the brunt for any of this any more. Hence, the two of them arrived for this meeting together. United front and all that. She looks at Romanoff and offers the younger-looking woman a brief nod before returning her attention to the Director.

If we're being perfectly honest here, Triplett didn't even realize there was supposed to still be something going on. When Trent decided he wasn't down for the mission, Triplett figured that was the end of it. But, really, he should've known that SHIELD wasn't going to just let something go. He takes a moment to look around at everyone gathered and then at the Director and then back to everyone else. "So." He's not sure if he should get right to the point or what. He might as well. He's already been in trouble once. "Trent said no." He's just laying the facts right out on the table. "Do we have a next move or is that it?" Probably shouldn't keeping it as matter-of-fact as he is but why not.

~

"Agent Romanoff," the Director acknowledges. "Agent May. Agent Triplett."

He sits a moment, watching the pair of agents that entered together closely before he rises from his desk. His head cants slightly as he pins Agent Triplett with his single eye, his voice rising, "Say again, Agent Triplett?" A glance is spared for his key Field Agent before they come back to the most junior of agents in the room. "I don't think I just heard you. Who said 'no'?"

~

Natasha is over here, which is likely the opposit side of May from Triplette. Either way though it is an ver here that has her hands clasped together behind her back, and her legs appart. Half military, half casual stance. Saying nothing, she is listening.

~

Melinda May actually takes a step to physically put herself between Triplett and Fury. "Director, I have been acting as Trent's contact and handler, not Triplett. The man is not on SHIELD's payroll and is not even an official asset. If he chooses to say no to any request from SHIELD, there is nothing any of us," the implication that Fury is included in that is more than clear, "can say or do to force his hand. He has successfully evaded HYDRA for years now, and if he feels he needs to he can and will disappear so completely none of us will be able to find so much as a hint of his existence." No, that's not a threat and it's not a boast. It's a statement of fact.

~

Triplett almost goes a little bit wide-eyed at May saying, y'know, more than two words. That was actually a sentence. A few sentences! It takes Triplett a little bit to realize that this isn't some crazy dream or nightmare and he steps up to stand next to May. While he's all for someone having his back against the Director, he's also not going to just leave it all on her. "I say we go without him. We're more than capable of handling whatever threat is out there. That's why we're here. That's what we're trained for." Triplett may be speaking out of turn but it is what it is at this point. "Sir, we're SHIELD. We're supposed to protect the world from stuff like this. And, whether Agent May's contact wants to play along or not, shouldn't have any bearing on whether or not we deal with a situation." Just his opinion.

~

"Handler for what, exactly, Agent May? For SHIELD assets. If I wanted to, I could say that you are no longer in that position and he is set free from SHIELD, no longer allowed near any of our locations, near any of our equipment, am I clear? If he is not on our payroll, then there is nothing left." Here, Fury stalks from behind his desk and stands right in front of May, his single eye staring at her face. "You sent a Junior Agent in full in the knowledge that what he was asking is so far above his classification level, he couldn't get to it without a firetruck. And -then- you get offended when I ask why he's using assets to investigate for a friend of his?"

Fury takes one step back and takes the pair in, May and Triplett. "And now you're telling me that because he said 'no', he doesn't want us to investigate it, that we're supposed to drop it on his word. Is that what you're saying. That I'm taking orders from him now?"
Now, he turns around and sits on the edge of his desk. "What I had called you in was to give you intelligence so when you went in, you wouldn't be going in blind. As it is, yes. I do want to know what's going on in there."

Pointing to Triplett, the Director turns his attention to the Junior Agent. "Out of the mouths of babes. Thank you for speaking up, Agent Triplett."
Leaning back, brows rise as he takes in his premiere Agent. "You hear that, Agent Romanoff?"

~

Natasha watches the inter-pay between Fury and the other two peopl. The briefing matters, but the poker-face is perfect. "Yes, Sir." It is a soimple enough reply. No multiple ones to distinguish between tag and box should Trent be seen using or attempting to use SHIELD assets as his toys. No second one for what follows in the mission status. The next statement is the next topic. "Sir, I reccomend Agent May as the lead. She is familiar with the team, and Agent Triplette as the mission specialist on site."

~

Melinda May considers possibly arguing with Fury further about it, but when he says he does want to know what's going on in Russia and was going to share intel with them, her reasons for wanting to push are pretty much gone. And, bonus, Trip doesn't seem to be on the Director's hit list anymore. For her own part, May's used to being on Fury's bad side, so she really could not care less.

Natasha's suggestion that May lead the team to investigate the intel is an honest surprise, and May nearly gives that away. But, she manages to refrain from looking toward the redhead and keeps her eyes focused on Fury.

~

"Now see, that's what I'm talking about. Common ground. I love it. I really do. I feel the love in this room." Trip doesn't dare reach out for anyone in this room because he's pretty sure they don't like being touched. And he also doesn't want to ruin the seriousness of this matter too much. He's just more focused on trying to keep just a little bit of tension-freedom within this entire thing. It could get too dangerous and everybody'll be coming at each other's necks again. And then he's starting to geek out a little bit at a thought that crosses his mind. "Wait. Mission Specialist?" He looks from Romanoff to Fury. "… Does that mean I get a Quinjet?"

~

Director Fury swings his attention back around to May, and levels it there. "But we were just told 'no', Agent Romanoff. So it looks like we'll be making a new team?" He takes a deep breath before he addresses Agent May once again. "This will be a SHIELD op. If he chooses to go with the team, Agent May will be his Handler and be fully responsible for him, but Agent Romanoff will be mission lead." The Russian knows her homeland. Knows the language. Knows habits. "Everyone answers to her." Beat. "And no, Agent Triplett. You don't get your own Quinjet."

Now, leaning back, the Director hits a button that darkens the room, and a large screen comes down. "I shouldn't have to remind any of you in this room that this does not leave this room. It is strictly -need to know-." Which means that a great deal of this information shouldn't ever leave any of these three here.

Upon the screen comes a grainy video with no real date stamp. It shows a fissure in the ground that obviously suffered an earthquake, and the town around it is absolutely flattened. Decimated. A small village outside of Neftegorsk.

"A team of Cosmonauts, led by Mikhail Rasputin," and here he looks at Trip before he continues, "were sent in because of anomalis readings. They had a special craft we only found out later about that was supposed to withstand travel to different dimensions. Rasputin's team wasn't heard from again." Here, he takes everyone in with his single eye. "Declared dead."

Rolling his shoulders, Fury brings up a satellite picture that shows the still decimated town all grown over, but there are covered trucks in the area, as well as new small buildings that dot the encampment. "It's opened up again. And apparently Japan is in the mix because of some treaties they keep claiming but our people haven't found yet. The Boarder guards there are shooting at everyone, and whatever is going on, they've doubled their watch. Eyes on the ground stated that everyone running around there are in hazmat suits." Now, he turns the pictures off and leans to put the lights back on. "All information about it is on full lockdown."

Now, the Director slides off the desk and looks at each of them. "Your mission is intel only. We're not looking to shut it down. Not until we know what the hell it is. Recon, surveil and report back."

~

Natasha never questions orders, that has been a trademark since her first order from Fury to present. He will make the moral judgments. If they really need a Quinjet, she or May will pull it, not Triplette so he can pick up girls in Germany during mission prep. "Understood, Director." Romanoff states. "I will review the intell and determine an insertion plan. Intl only, no treaty violations, wet works at .. Well, SHIELD will have none." She states. The mention of hazmat suits though has a bit more attention. "I would like to request a geek or two."

Natasha turns to May and takes a slow breath as she mulls over the matter. "I need to know who speaks Russian, and Japanese." then she looks back to Fury, "Should we assume this is under Krem;in and Tokyo control.. Or do we belive this has been out sourced to less, legitimate sources." Cause, in theory, there is a less legitimate source than the mercenary peice-meal of post Soviet Russia.

~

Finally. Some actual intel to work with. If May has any further emotional responses for the topic at hand, she doesn't reveal them. Instead, she studies the data given on the displays and mulls over what Fury tells them about the region in question and the more current events surrounding that destroyed town.
Romanoff's question about languages has her saying in her usual terse manner, "Japanese," though she knows that to anyone actually from Japan she'd pass for a native about as successfully as Captain Rogers would. At this point, she'd be okay with simply being the Bus driver for this mission.

~

"Passable Russian. Passable Japanese." Trip hasn't had the pleasure of studying up on the languages of everything yet. While he's trained to be multilingual, this doesn't mean he knows every language under the sun. He knows just enough to be able to handle his missions in those areas. But perhaps this will be a good time to brush up on things. He stays quiet other than that, as he's more than ready to just throw his talents out into the mix for this particular mission. So he's paying attention to the intel and the pre-planning that is going on.

~

"Eye witness says it's the Pogranichni'ia Voiska Rossi'i." The child of the KGB. "So I'm going to assume it's got the blessings of the President himself." Good ol' Vladimir Putin. "As for whether or not Tokyo has a hand in it, I don't know yet. If I find out, you'll be the second person to know."

Fury looks to the group again as he gently reminds, "The President has that country in almost a state of war." Which means that things are going to be even hotter than usual. "The American Embassy is under a constant state of harassment. There are defunct military bases that are being rebuilt. This is serious."
Now, however, Fury looks to Romanoff, "Stay behind when they're dismissed, if you would Agent Romanoff?" He has no doubt that the mission is in good hands and that they've now got a good chance of coming back, now that they know more than they did coming in.

~

"Understood, Sir." Natasha says as she looks to the other two. That means just wait it out. Real Russians, real illegal. Good ole cold war II. Just keep it from becoming WW III. She looks to May and swallows, "Please see if you can ocate a SHIELD geek for us. I don't want that filled by contractor." She states clalmly and then looks to Triplett. "Practice an accent.. Middle Eastern or North African. On site, use it with the Russian.. Do not speak Japanese, at all. Speak only English to the Japanese, in that accent." Then she just goes quiet and still. Fury will finish with her, which means it is likely messy for May, and that does not bode well.

~

Melinda May has her suspicions about many things, but she's long since in the habit of keeping those thoughts to herself. She nods to Romanoff as the first instructions of this mission are issued, then looks to Fury again to wait for dismissal. She's got a Simmons and a Fitz to track down.

~

Triplett isn't exactly going to be offering any words or asking any questions. Not when the situation seems to be quite handled already. "Understood." That's to Romanoff because he's been wanting to brush up on his accents anyway. Now he has a reason to. He stands at attention, right there alongside Agent May, until dismissal becomes a permanent and real thing. Yeah, he's got a Simmons to track down himself. Oh and Fitz too.

~

"You are dismissed. Do what you need to do. You have your orders."

He waits for the agents to file out, one by one before he considers speaking again. Now, the Director turns to the remaining Natasha, and he takes a deep breath and exhales in order to relieve some of the tensions in his back. She, other than DepDir Hill, is his most trusted.

~

Natasha remains where she is, barely a nod to the others before looking back to Fury and letting her hands drop to her side. "So, what's the bad news, Sir?" She asks as she steps a little closer. there is a slight relaxing at the decades of familiarity between the two, but it is still very much, boss-employee.

~

Fury looks to the Russian and actually chuckles, the pressure release valve in this case. "Believe it or not, it's not bad news." It's a swing back around to his desk and he sits down heavily in his chair.

"We've got a new lease on the Avengers Initiative. You and Barton are the SHIELD liasons. After this mission, consider yourselves to be active Jay-El Avengers duty and part time SHIELD. We've got a new acquisition, the Watchtower. Ask Barton to bring you up there one day. I think you'll like the view."
There are times when he seems a different person, and the weight of responsibility sits heavily. "We're working with Wonder Woman at the moment as well. Hopefully, Superman will come around soon and join the team. Beyond them, we need to keep this low and let you all work it out together and come up with a plan." He looks up to his top agent and repeats, "This is for the big jobs. The ones we can't handle. Handpicked."

~

Natasha listens, taking it all in. In the group, she leaves questions off. Between the two she is far more direct when she is uncertain of what is done and what needs doing. She lets him sit before she brings up that name. "What about Stark?" the geek with the firepower. He at least should be considered after all. That is his call, Stark tends to bully things on a job, and the annoying fact that he usually is the smartest man in the room makes it worse. "And you know .. I always have concerns about putting an alien in charge.. Is that on the table for Superman?" He is going to do what he thinks is right, and she generally prefers aim and fire to discussing, 'should we be doing this?' That is Fury's job.. Some very rare times Rogers.

~

This, this is what he needs. A good, keen mind, and Fury nods. "Stark. Rogers. There is a second Hawkeye by the name of Kate Bishop. Sam Wilson." There are others, absolutely, but this is a good start. "You and Barton have recruiting rights."

Concerns are noted, and he, too, shares them. "He gave me a hard time about accountability. Right now, he's a rogue asset but is willing to step in if asked, though he said he didn't want to be part of the team." Fury is sure he'll bring the man into the fold. "So as of right now, the three of you are on pretty equal footing."

~

Point and fire seems better as a choice for Superman, "Should I attempt to contact the other Kryptonian. Powergirl? She seems on focus a bit more at times." Maybe she won't do it, but it is worth a shot. "I will at least look into it all. I will go over the details with Barton, get his input." And she is not even going to mention those Gotham loonies unless she has a specific position to fill. "I will get right on it."

~

"That's a good idea. Batman stepped down, so I don't know how much you'll get from Gotham, but who knows? He handed Barton a pouch and said that he was his replacement, whatever that means. But, I'm not willing to let him just walk away yet either. Worth a shot." Fury exhales and sits back in his chair. "When you get back." As far as he's concerned, it's never 'if'. "Now go. Your field team needs you."
