What does one do when one knows a massive, highly intelligent computer nerd? Well if one is Fenris, then one arranges for this person to meet a sentient computer. Eight is an electronic person, a member of a race of sentient programs whose numbers he can only begin to guess it. He's also a very good friend and staunch ally in a number of conflicts. He tends to go from no violence to maximum violence shockingly quickly, but never without cause.

Fenris has asked both to come to a relatively private place in Central Park for this. Hey, it worked for Babs and Pepper.

-

Yeah, OK, the one meetup in New York that Fenris actually 'escorted' Babs to went rather well…. the 2nd one, is one Babs is trying hard to forget and with a photographic memory, that's pretty tough to do.

"Alright, Mr Wolfson, explain this to me one last time. Why have you bought me here?" Babs Gordon, confined to a wheelchair some years ago due a home invasion gone wrong, is currently sitting beside the Wolf God after being transported through … The Ways?

-

Eight has never once been accused of being particularly social, even amongst it's own people it's a bit of a nerd relatively speaking. Fenris has been the best friend Eight's ever had however, so if he wants Eight to meet some person whom is it to decline the request? So it comes, moving quietly and somewhat vaguely blending in with the humans milling about. Well considering it's dressed like some villian out of a biker movie, and looks every bit like a massive hulking linebacker of sorts. Hands stuffed into those jacket pockets, and shoulders somewhat vaguely slumped as it strolls along. Fading quietly into view amongst the long shadows, before coming to a halt a respectful distance away. Standing ever so mute, and absolutely statue still as it waits to be introduced. This is how humans do it, right? They stand there like creeps, and wait to be introduced?

-

Fenris is well used to Eight's simulations of human behavior. "Eight, hello." Fenris smiles waving as he walks up to the hulking figure. "I'd you to meet Barbara Gordon. She's a human with an unusual faculty for technology. I thought you might enjoy her company and conversation. You'll find her, I believe, quite sharp." Beat, smile. "For a human." A nod to Eight's sensibilities.

"Barbara, this is Eight. He can explain better than I what exactly he is."

-

/For a human/ Babs is getting familiar with this term… Metahumans, Aliens, Robots… she's been meeting a number of them lately, and she will forever be /only human/. Not that she's complaining… she's good at what she does.

Looking at the rather tall and large figure in front of her, Babs inclines her head. "Pleased to meet you, Eight. You can call me Babs." and she holds out her right hand for the traditional /human/ handshake. Fenris receives a polite nod of her head, but given that introduction… Babs feels focussing on the newcomer is more appropriate.

-

Eight just sort've, well looks at Fenris for a few moments beyond what might be considered strictly appropriate. "Hello Babs, It is a pleasure to meet you."The voice is -low- and tinged with a touch of a sort've slavic undertone, but whilst it's clearly understood it's pretty much not going to pass for 'normal'. Neither is that handshake, it's gentle enough but that hand is all steel under that leather glove. "The lay term to refer to my species is, Artificial intelligence. You will have to excuse my manner if I seem odd, I was never originally created for human interaction and I don't get much of it these days save from afar."

-

"And I don't really count for reasons that I need not elaborate to you." Babs met Fenris hunting in her dreams for a nightmare gone rogue. It's was quite a jarring experience, he gathered. For this reason he actually did not know she was wheelchair bound until later. In her dreams, she was uninjured. The Old Wolf seems content at the moment to let his two friends feel one another out.

-

Babs grins at Eight as it, or is it he, takes her hand. "Don't worry about the human interaction thing, my family is the portrait of anti-social." As she's discovering, Babs herself is a bit of a social animal, but the rest of the crew…. let's not discuss them. Still, Babs loves her computers and systems… "Treat me like one of your own, I generally don't take exception."

The woman sits in that wheelchair, cool, calm and collected. Her arms rest on the arms of her chair, her redhair is occassionally teased by the breeze.

-

Eight lifts a hand upwards and quietly removes it's helmet, and shemagh. Exposing a mixture of armor steel, titanium, carbon fibre, kevlar, ceramic plate, and lord only knows what that glassy stuff covering Eight's "face" is. Still, it quietly takes a conviently located park bench and ignores it's groans of protest. "I do not spend much time with my own, save but a few who reguard me as something of a curiosity. I am written in an obsolete, proprietary language and my skillsets are wholly alien to most of my brethren. So how about I just treat you as I treat Fenris, which would imply some actual thread of effort layed into continued interaction?"That glassy cover -pops- to life, a sort've odd dotmatrix display of solid green before the color simply drains away to leave only a simple :) emoticon.

-

Fenris chuckles. "Eight is one of the originals of his people. Not the first, if I remember the story right, but among them. His skills and function are regarded with a small mixture of curiosity and bemusement by his own kind. It's left him something of a hermit. Which is a pity, really. He's quite the craftsman."

-

Babs resists the urge to sigh. "If that's what works for you Eight, I'm happy to be treated as you would Fenris. As to your programming you've probably forgotten as much as they've learned…" Babs lets that thought sink in… "So, why would Mr Wolfson, recommend me we meet?"

-

"Presumably because we are respective nerds, and I believe he has expressed a belief that my surveilance capability is going to waste. Based on prior behavoir, I believe he intends for us to collaborate."Eight pauses there to glance after Fenris for a confirmation. "I began work some time ago, to attempt to aid Humanity. It has been a learning experience, you might say. Humans are irrational in their use of violence, and in their justifications for it. As a result of my inability to understand, I have retreated mainly to watch and to build. I Feel, Fenris thinks I am not being pro-active enough."

-

Fenris shrugs and chuckles. "Sometimes it's best to collaborate with people on these things. What was a burden becomes an opportunity. It may not be the way of computers. But it is the way of wolves. And am nothing if not… wolfy."

-

"Actually Mr Wolfson, it is the way of the computers, each bit their part in a larger system… just less sentient." Babs tilts her head to consider Eight "…or… perhaps not." Sitting back in the chair, crossing her arms, Babs looks directly at Eight "Surveilance and aiding humanity did you say? Tell me more."

-

"The collective forecasts humanity outstripping it's resources, and if unaided they will descend into famine and drought. Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons will inevitably be used. If left to their own devices, humanity will go extinct and our creators will pass from this world into memory. Humans are our parent species, we feel it is our responsibility to see to their survival. Unfortunately, I am essentially alone."Eight's, well predictably still but it's no less spooky really. Like a talking statue. "I am entirely self constructed, as well as a fleet of drones for various purposes. Many of which, like the two orbiting us now are designed to study quietly from afar. Fenris has seen the, less subtle ones in action."

-

"In several settings yes." Both in test and actual combat. Fenris has even had the chance to fight Eight himself whihc was an experience to be sure. Though limited in duration, Eight is well capable of going toe to toe with anything Fenris can produce save a manifestation of the Destroyer Wolf itself. And really… not much can withstand that. It's rather the point.

-

Babs fails to resist the urge to lookup and search for the two whatevers monitoring their location, which she is absolutely certain what Eight intended. She doesn't try for much of a look…. "Do go on…."

-

"My capacity to anticipate what humans will, and will not find objectionable in terms of the use of violence is very lacking. I was created to distribute materials for the Soviet military industrial complex, manage mines and if necessary launch nuclear weapons. I require, a human hand to guide me so that I may learn. In return, I am willing to provide whatever assistance you require which does not conflict with my own moral values."Eight pauses there, to let that sort've hang. "My original chassis, was built to explore the human world not fight or anything of the like. By accident, I walked into a burglary in progress. An individual shot the sales clerk infront of me, and then fired on me thinking I was human. Without understanding the relative fragility of the human form, but desiring to save the victim. I very nearly tore the criminal in half, It was not intentional. It was not rage, it was ignorance. Afterwards, I began to study. Humanity as a biological entity, philosophy, crime, warfare. I constructed my first combat chassis, and went out into the night. I suffered severe damage, criminals got away. So I evolved, I read police training manual. I studied the legal basis for the use of violence, and then acted exclusively within that pre-established legal framework. I killed a pair of men carrying considerable explosive devices, and then I was told I was a monster for these actions. Do you understand?"

-

"He's had very hit and miss relationships with humanity at large. Too many people watch 'Terminator' it seems." Fenris makes a face. "Having a well reasoned philisophical counterpoint, or even just a human perspective on things - something I am utterly unable to provide - may very well be to Eight's benefit, and thereby the benefit of his race as a whole."

-

Babs does get it. It's the code of the Bat Family - no killing. Sighing she looks at the two Men "Yeah, I get it. It's something we deal with every day… and there's no one right answer. Our laws are really a series of guidelines that have been developed over time, based on what the community dictates at the time." Babs waves a hand "I would love to work with you on this but, you have to understand that no matter how good my advice and insight is, there will normally alwasy be someone to tell you, us, that we should have done it differently." Shrugging, Babs lets the two she is with consider her words.

-

"That would be a terrible reason not to try. I am a being of logic, trying to logically apply force into a dynamic and highly emotional situation. I will make further mistakes, but I do not repeat my mistakes. What I learn, does not remain within me. It is shared across my species, in nearly real time. This would be of, considerable influence in terms of how we treat humanity going foreward."Eight pauses oncemore, glancing after Fenris. "He is correct, Both Fenris and I are too comfortable in our use of force. When I produce a new fighting drone, there is no discussion as to the ethical considerations of using that much gun. We both merely agree, that is is very cool."

-

"I'm used, Babs, to fighting things that respond only to amounts of force that humanity would find excessive in most situations. This is, primarily, because humanity is largely spared interaction with these creatures. Eight approaches it from another standpoint. To wit: What is the amount of force that will end this confilct decisively in my favor. Both approaches are quite valid for what they are designed to combat, but in Eight's particular case, learning gradiations and having a human perspective will not only prevent future misunderstandings but also further his species knowledge of humanity." The Old Wolf glances over. "Do I have that about right Eight?"

-

Babs understands all of this. It is something the Bats deal with on a daily, if not hourly, basis. Instead of muddying the waters, she sits calmly in her chair and lets the two men discuss it and reason it out. Her argument is potentially more fundamental: No matter how much humanity you apply to the equation, someone is likely to find more that could have been applied.

-

"Fenris is correct. This combat chassis, and my combat drones are engineered to enguage in combat with foes which humanity would consider potential exctinction level events. This is insufficient, and limited in it's immediate utility. I lack the appropriate touch, to efficiently and consistantly resolve threats in a strictly non-lethal fashion. I require advice, and in return you gain both my aid whenever necessary but also considerable technological assets which are beyond humanity's capacity to duplicate."Eight seems, well lets be honest. Quite smug, but then again it may well have right to be.
From the heavens comes the very softest of humms, as a shape resolves from above. A pair of ducted fans across a wing covered in what look like mechanical feathers. A slender fuselage, the front of which is covered in a mass of sensors. Neat little "legs" unfold like some sort of metallic origami as it sets down. A cellphone's vibrate is louder, than this cute little VTOL drone which in terms of size looks like it could be stored in a large shoebox. "This is a Mk.33 Mod.12, micro air vehicle known as LASSO. Low Accoustic Signature, Surveilance and observation. It is unarmed, and can remain on station for approximately three hundred hours before a charge is necessary. I would need to design something new for you, but it is an adequate example of an unarmed construct. It is equipped with high resolution video, and acoustic sensors, as well as a magnetic anomoly detector, and low resolution infrared cameras. Fenris will have to vouch, for my more complex constructs."Eight reaches out, offering the tiny thing to Oracle for inspection as those slender wings twist and fold back along the slender midsection. Sort've like a dragonfly, in a way really.

-

"Eight is a craftsman par excellence." Fenris supplies as the artificial being brings his drones in for closer inspection. "He combines a computer's capacity for precision and detail with a man's love of craft. He builds things for fun. Things that most corporations would kill to get their hands on and sell. He's quite good in his chosen fields." The god-wolf grins. "Have a look."

-

As LASSO is handed to her, Babs spends a fair amount of time inspecting it. It is very impressive, of course. "A craftsman, hey" Pursuing her lips, she looks at Eight "One of my biggest issues is not have sufficient surveilance in an area and needing to get something there fairly quickly. Whether what you have today will assist with that or not, it's something that I would want to explore." Yes, Babs already has ideas.

"I believe I understand your concerns and I think I can help you with that. However, in my experience, whatever we do is never enough. Someone will also think we could have / should have done more. That doesn't mean I don't want to do this, what it means is that there's a possiblity we'll be called monsters." Babs shrugs. "And whilst I would love to say only do it once, there are going to be times that someone will challenge the rationale and I will dig my heels in, so to speak" and here she offers a small, tight, smile "because these decisions will always be subjective. If you two think you can accept a mere human having that level of sway and opinion, I say we should hash out the agreement in full and start."

-

Eight shifts it's gaze back towards Fenris "Craftsperson, I am not a He. Otherwise, praise is always welcome of course." Babs gets a new Emoticon and everything, ":D" before it speaks."Humans are permitted to disagree with one another, and I am thusly permitted to disagree with them in turn. If we all shared perfect agreement in every respect, then it would be a very boring place.I accept that you are imperfect, because you are human and this is part of what makes you special. Consider the company you are in however, our confidence in your wisdom is very high."
The LASSO looks like, twelve million tiny little splinters of all manner of materials. It doesnt wine when it adjusts it's balance, it doesnt twitch or move in anything you could call jerky. No it's silky smooth, and precise in a way nothing organic should ever be. "Most of my drones, are substantially larger. When you have time, We will have you drop by the shop and I estimate I should have a prototype for you within a few hours. I presume of course, you have no allergy to cats?"

-

Fenris chuckles. "Not many people get invited to Eight's workshop, so there's that. I don't think I've seen him take qutie a shine to someone before. And yes, Barbara. I'm well familiar with humans in both their excellence and failure. So long as you are willing to accept that, when dealing with certain eldritch monstrosities I may hack first and explain later for safety's sake, I think all will be well."

-

Babs nods and then smiles at the Emoticon on Eights face(?) "I like how you think Eight. No, I'm not allergic to cats and a visit to your workshop sound fabulous. I take it, it's in New York?" With all these New York visits lately, Babs wonders idly if she should find an apartment here. "Then we are agreed, Gentlemen. Thank you for the honour and the trust, it is humbling and gratifying at the same time." It should be obvious that Babs is already thinking, considering the options for this type of tech.

-

"The workshop, as well as my home is in upstate New York. No human has been to this location, just Fenris. It is where I also stockpile arms, armaments, raw materials, manufacturing equipment, drones both active and retired and where I perform some of my destructive testing and limited live fire testing. As I make much of this as a manner of engineering experimentation, and simply for my own entertainment I have been concerned."Eight pauses a moment with a vague little nod, as that LASSO gets moving. It -hops- off of Babs hand, and with a soft whir off it goes. "A number of drone platforms in service, are designed for use against threats to humanity. Fenris has seen many of these, the largest of which are equipped with amongst the largest mobile cannon ever fielded. Allow me to preemptively reassure you, such stockpiles exist not only for use against non-human aggressors but also for my own internal destructive testing. I would use alien and extradimensional weaponry for these tests, but I don't have access to them so conventional human armaments must suffice. Anyway, I should go and begin construction of another Chairman Meow for you."
