Bobby is walking. He does sometimes and tonight is one of those times. He's not ordinarily given to walking though Queens in the middle of the night but he had a call out here for DCI and he took the subway rather than drive all the way out here and deal with maybe having his car broken into. It's not a nice neighborhood but the ice nerd isn't that worried. He is, after all, one cool dude. Pun totally intended. The houses have given way to a business district now. Shops and banks and such and he's starting to breathe easy as he covers the last couple of blocks to the subway.

-

Nothing breaks up a peaceful walk through a slowly improving, but still relatively bad part of town, like the scream of metal being forcefully seperated from other metal at speed. It isn't the sound of a slow rend like a crowbar wedging open a door either but much more akin to what hollywood makes a car wreck sound like. The source seems to be around the next corner.

Of course, around the next corner is not a car wreck at all, but a remarkably short female decked out in a black and red hoodie (the red being a previous dye bomb going off on it which now makes it look fairly artistic), hood flipped up. She is in the process of dropping an ATM that she just seperated from the housing in the side of the building and trying to get a grip to open the housing as fast as she can find the right angle and leverage.

-

Bobby just stares for a moment. This is the kind of thing he expects to see in M-Town, which is why the ATMs there have reinforced titanium frames… and are electrified. He stops in his tracks as the ATM hinges outward with the shriek of abused metal. "Hey!" He says more out of surprise than anything else. Did she just… tear that ATM out with her bare hands? "Hey you!" He starts jogging over in that direction.

No one ever accused him of being smart.

-

The girl's grip on the side of the casing flounders and slips, almost sending her comically on her ass at your shout. Nyx pinwheels for balance and once regained looks over wide eyed. Which can plainly be seen, though half of her face is obscured by a half-balaclava mask from just beneath her eyes on down now. "Go away!" shouts the teenager, and she glances back down, getting a better grip, braces with her foot, and starts to open the housing with a snap of steel. Timetable Nyx, Timetable. Cops even if this part of town is really crap for response times are still a worry.

-

There might be another worry. "Uh, look, Miss, just um… put the ATM down." Bobby holds his hand out. It's already starting to ice over as he gets ready to do… something. He's not sure what yet. Maybe dodge a flying ATM? "If you need help we can get you some but, er, that's probably not gonna work out well."

-

This girl seems more concerned about this taking too long, or accidently setting off another dye pack. Though as far as the dye pack is concerned she thinks she has the hang of it after the first couple ATMs at this point. Nyx clenches her teeth a bit and pops the ATM open with another loud squeel of metal. "I said get lost man I don't need anyones help I totally got this!" she sounds a bit snappy at this point due to all the pressure of this rapidly devolving situation. Sure there is way more to be worried about, but then she has no idea the geeky guy is one of the superheros she totally internet stalks with other hero watchers on those sites since they are NYC based.

-

Bobby sighs and immediately encases the ATM in a thin layer of ice. Sure it won't actually stop a woman who could rip it out of the wall in the first place from opening it up again, but it may back her off just from the 'weird' factor. "Look, miss, don't do this." Is all he says. He doesn't want to fight and he doesn't particularly want to see this girl get in any more trouble than she probably is already.

-

Nyx totally gasps, then yelps, and drops her hold on the ATM which lands on her foot sending her staggering back a step cursing violently. Yeah not used to freaky things despite evidence to the contrary. Once she gets a bit of a grip on herself she looks at you once more wide eyed. "Uh." right, smooth Nyx, very smooth. A look to the ATM and then a look to Bobby and back and forth once more. "Ice.. oh.. oh my god are you…?"

-

The sandy haired guy smiles a bit in what he hopes is a manner that will seem unthreatening and not cause the situation to devolve further. "Bobby Drake. AKA Iceman, yeah that's me." He's just getting used to people knowing who he is. Public profile on the internet and all sure, but having strangers recognize him is still kind of jarring.

-

Nyx blinks, she totally hasn't met a superhero before and this kind of derails the track she was on there. She stares for a very long moment then enthuses "Ohmygod .. this… is… amazing!" she just sort of flails her hands, not sure really what to do with them and for the moment not really thinking about the fact she was just committing a felony and this may go down hill, or well cops could arrive.

-

Bobby's had a lot of reactions to his showing up and that's definitely not the one he expected, but hey. It's better than chunks of masonry getting chucked at him. "It is? I take it you're a…" The word feels kind of wrong to use, but hey… "Fan?"

-

Nyx nods "Oh yeah.. I follow all of you guys… Magik is amazing." she shakes her head "I can't believe I'm talking to a super hero… I… oh…." she pauses a beat and looks at the iced ATM and then at you and tenses up there, eyes very unsure.

-

"Magik is pretty dang amazing." Not around a lot because of responsibilities, but Bobby'll agree with that one and no troubles. Helps that Magik is his girlfriends bestie. "Look, technically ripping an ATM out of a wall is a crime. Buuuut I'm not Batman and I'm not a cop. Speaking of which, they'll be showing up soon." He looks down the street a ways and then says, as if to no one in particular. "I think I'm gonna go grab a coffee at Starbucks." Yes, he said that aloud for a reason.

-

Nyx shifts her weight from one foot, to the other foot, and back again there. She seems to be weighing all of her options and it takes a long moment. She looks down to the ATM, it is probably getting really dicey to try to break the ice and go for the cash with all this time wasted. She looks back to you and her shoulders slump a degree as the stress slides out of her "Uh… right.. not batman.. he probably would have conked me on the head with a batarang not yelled at me…" she trails off, right Nyx don't babble. "Well.. I .. should scoot…." she gives a darty look and takes off, part of her thinking she is going to go skidding on a sheet of ice. The other part of her consumed with wondering if she should pick up on that maybe kind of offer and ditch her hoodie and mask and .. get a coffee.

-

Bobby kind of hopes so. He gives the young masked woman a smile and sticks his hands in his pockets, walking toward the coffee shop about a block distant with a bit of a whistle. He's not in a hurry though he can hear sirens in the distance. Once he looks over his shoulder just to see if anyone's there. Either way he makes the coffee shop - it's mostly empty - and gets in line to get a latte.

-

A short while after that the door opens, hesitantly if doors could even be hesitantly. A young woman with punky hair and a good case of the nerves steps inside looking around very carefully. So much for not acting all suspicious like you just did something illegal. Nyx must have ditched the hoodie and mask somewhere, but the jeans are the same.

-

Bobby's just finishing his latte and gives the young woman a friendly wave. Sort of a wave that someone might give if they were, you know, in a good mood and greeting people in an otherwise empty coffee shop. He goes and sits down on one of the stools near a long bar. The seats next to him are open. Well the seats mostly everywhere are open.

-

Nyx relaxes a little bit at the friendly wave, she waves back a bit hesitantly there on her way to the counter now. She orders herself a grande pumpkin spiced mocha with extra whip cream. She pays with a slightly mangled but not dye packed twenty then makes her way over to the stool by you and settles in quietly.

-

Bobby grins a bit and turns to Nyx as she settles in. "So, nice to meet you." He doesn't say 'again'. "It's still kind of new to me the whole 'being a kind of sort of famous person. Don't run into many fans. Probably because I don't usually wear the uniform." Which he has, yes but only breaks out for official occasions when X-Red's presene is hired or officially requested. Otherwise it's just ol' Bobby Drake doin' his thing.

-

Nyx runs her hand back through her hair there and uhms all smoothly. She covers for her lack of skill with a deep sip of her drink. "Right.. uhm well there are totally websites for this you know. Other then batman sightings.. the teams … you know that are kinda public. Theres tumblers and blogs and .. the works .. lots of gossip."

-

The ice nerd chuckles. "Gossip eh? Maybe it's good that I don't go on those sites. What kinds of things to people gossip about?" He's almost afraid to ask but there's a decent chance this might be entertaining.

-

The teen looks mildly sheepish and rubs the back of her neck next and gives a helpless little shrug "Well … you know." gosh maybe he doesn't "Sightings mostly and theories about secret identities.. for the ones with them…" pauses a beat "Relationship theories… speculations.."

-

Bobby laughs. "Well the secret identity one on the X-Red folks must be kind of boring. Since, you know, our actual names are all out there." Not their addresses, thank goodness. Just you know, where they work, which is publicly known anyway. There's not a whole lot of personal info out there other than their names actually. "I can tell you a bit about relationships though, well, for the public ones. Wouldn't be right to tell you about the secret ones really. What do folks speculate about? Things like 'how many languages does Cypher speak?' The answer is 'all of them.'" Well, kind of.

-

Nyx nods at that "Well.. sure stuff like that. There are lots of debates about whose powers do what and who would win in a fight. Honestly it is a solid mix of sightings, news clippings, youtube videos, and speculation.. gossip.. fanfic." rambles a little bit, hits the last one and shuts up sipping her drink.

-

"Fanfics?" Oh god. Bobby can just imagine, and wishes he could not. "The answer to who would win in a fight, by the way, is Magik. Every time." Seriously, that woman could be a global threat if she ever decided she wants to be. Fortunately, near as Bobby can tell, she just wants to live her life as best she can and that's something he'll absolutely get behind. Doesn't change the fact however that the woman is scary powerful and knows it. "Well that's all pretty nifty. Never thought when I started that anyone would really put that much effort into thinking about any of us. Except for, you know, Friends of Humanity and their ilk."

-

Nyx scrunches her nose up when you say that "Those guys are nutsballs like the KKK…. but on rabies or something." she shakes her head there "But yeah you wouldn't believe how much time people spend… some more than others.. I mean some of you guys are even on twitter like Booster Gold."

-

Bobby's met Booster only once but he seems like a nice guy. "Oh yeah. He mostly pals around with the Titans. Good guy from what I can tell. They're a bit more on the whole secret identity thing, but I can't say's I can blame them. I mean they've got Robin as one of their memebers." And a huge purple cat. And a huge green cat. Don't ask. He certainly doesn't. "Well what about you? What got you so interested?"

-

That has the girl sipping her drink and puffing out her cheeks a smidge as she considers the questin. "Well… the stuff you guys do is amazing." another pause for a beat "Way mroe interesting then anything in my life.. its like .. you know it is like TV but … real people. I Guess it is the coolest reality show on earth right?"

-

"Huh. Never thought of it that way I suppose. I mean most of the time I just work in a lab. Physics degree, you know, and sometimes Roberto calls up and says he's got a 'cool' job or that there's an emergency and we need to get going. But yeah, it's action sometimes. A lot of it. What about your life? Oh, I don't think I caught your name. You know mine, obviously."

-

She nods "Bobby." she fidgets a a bit of her napkin apart, she may start shredding it at this rate. "Uh,, Nyx." yeah that totally isn't her real name, she was robbing a bank earlier after all and isn't a complete dork. "My life.. not that special." another pause "Wasn't that special.. seems like it might be changing now…"

-

Bobby's not a dork either, fortunately. "Nyx. Neat." As code names go that one's pretty snappy. "Well if things might be changing for you I guess that could be good. You know I know a lot of people out there are always looking for talent. X-Red, if you can walk the straight and narrow. We're public so we have to be. But SHIELD, Titans, you know things like that." Left unsaid but hinted at, with powers she may have options that aren't ripping ATMs out of walls.

-

Nyx keeps fidgeting there, slowly turning the napkin into a pile of little paper snowflakes at this rate. "I .. that." she just seems to be at a total loss for words, fidget, rip, fidget, siiip. "I'm not a mutant or anything…. and I doubt any of those others would pick me" what is this high school sports.. oh right eighteen or so by the looks "… I'm not no superhero or anything."

-

"Eh, being a mutant's overrated." True, the X-Men are all Mutants but Bobby personally thinks such exclusivity isn't any good in the long run. And they definitely have allies that aren't mutants. "No one starts out a superhero Nyx. Hell, I was just a scared nineteen year old three years ago when my powers manifested." And it nearly got him killed too. Lynch mobs are such ugly things. "I don't know that I'd call myself a super hero now. Just a guy who found something useful to do with his powers."

-

Nyx flicks the pile of napkin bits with her finger, sending them poofing out across the counter and into the air. "I.. guess … I mean… yeah." she furrows her brow "I'm just strong now." understatement "I couldn't even get into community college… an .." she lowers her voice "I mean… the first thing I did when I got strong was steal money… why would anyone want to help me… why are you being so nice." tone shifts a bit suspicious there, maybe she has trust issues to boot.

-

"Strong is good. And smart isn't all about test scores. You were smart enough not to get into a fight that might have gotten you arrested after all. And nice enough to come down and talk with a stranger over coffee." Bobby shrugs with a smile. "Why am I being nice? Because you gave me the chance to be. And like I said, I'm not the Batman." Not the grumpy, frowny, lecturing voice of the Night. Nor the vigilante type who breaks the legs of people who get parking tickets. "I mean you could have chucked that ATM at me and bolted, but you talked instead." So really Nyx gave herself the chance to have someone be nice to her.

-

Nyx blinks at all of that and well she still seems skeptical "I didn't even think about .. throwing the ATM." either she didn't process she could or she didn't want to hurt you, hard to say. "God I am glad you are not batman… pow.. bam.. batarang to the head…. that would like totally suck…. totally… totally suck.. pow." she offers you a very shy smile. "Also.. you're not really a stranger.. your famous."

-

Bobby's smiles in return. "Hadn't thought of that. Hope I wasn't too much of a disappointment." He's found that lot of people expect heroes to be flashy and flamboyant and that's just not Iceman's style. "Anyway, like a lot of things, Nyx, it's not what you've got, but what you do with it that matters. And hey, if you wask me even if it's just being strong what you've got isn't so bad."

-

Nyx tips the coffee cup in one hand and starts to nervously shred it too now, not really realizing what she is doing. "I.. yeah I guess you are right." she smiles that shy smile again "I am pretty strong.. I totally lifted a car up.. well a small car….. I thought I hurt myself doing it but no I totally managed it.. though I think I hurt the car, heard something snap."

-

"And hey, no one says it has to be for free either." Bobby winks. "I totally get paid to use my cool in a lab that tests stuff that has to be cold." Actually, he directs that lab now, thanks Berto. "I mean, just off the top of my head, you have any idea how many construction companies would pay to have someone around who can lift up an I beam with their bare hands? And that's just for starters. You might come down to M-Town if you're interested in that kind of thing. A lot of the companies that make use of powered people have offices that way."

-

Nyx blinks "you work in a lab freezing stuff?" that you are not always out being.. an X-men startles some part of her it seems. "Do most super powerful people have jobs like that…. and .. well that would be better than flipping burgers still… but… Im not sure I really want to spend time with construction workers.. I already get catcalled enough in the city…"

-

"I don't think most construction workers are dumb enough to catcall a woman who could repark their car with her bare hands, but sure, I get that maybe it's not the most ideal work environment." Bobby grins. "Just an idea. I'm sure you can come up with others. And yeah, a lot of people do. I mean, especially the ones who have secret identities. Being a hero doesn't really pay a whole lot and even someone like me's gotta eat."

-

Nyx nods furrowing her brow there as she keeps demolishing the cup "I.. guess you are right." she nods lightly "Maybe I should poll one of the groups.. I bet they know what someone with super strength should do.. chances are they say stop crime or rob a bank.. they are pretty black and white online." she smiles again faintly "Im not sure I want people to know that.. I have super strength… I mean god.. my parents will think Im unclean or possessed by a demon." she just sounds exhasperated.

-

Bobby looks sympathetic, though watching her tear her cup apart is kind of amusing. "Yeah, well that's why a lot of us don't tell anyone. The chance to live a normal life is… something a lot of folks want after you've been forced to be not normal for a while. People like me are lucky in that I get to do both. I don't think you need a poll, personally, just a little imagination." He pauses and snaps. "Oh, that's right. One of my team mates, Mike, he owns a construction and demolition company." Bobby gets another napkin and writes a phone number and address down. "You might look him up. Tell him Bobby sent you."

-

Nyx stops the cup demolishing and reaches out to snag the napkin and look at it "I could…. I mean still not sure about construction and demolitions… but it probably pays better then what I do now" not to mention less dangerous than ATMs. "Do you .. like actually know Booster Gold and the Titans too?" they are pretty cool. Shield though is scary like the cops./

-

"I've met them. Titans and X-Red are pretty friendly." Friendly enough that they've come to him for help on a couple of issues. "Got a couple of phone numbers in case we need to work togeher or just want to hangout. They're pretty decent people." Bobby grins.

-

Nyx looks at that shredded pile of starbucks cup and blushes "That is so cool. This turned out tobe way better than the other nights with the ATMs.." she drops her voice again for this part. "Didn't their tower like get blown up?"

-

Bobby nods. "Yeah it did. Sucked for them. A lot. Fortunately they got a new place." Which he wont divulge. Tower explosions are traumatic. "Well, I think I should move on. Give Mike a call if you want or you could always e-mail me at work, if you need to talk." He stands up and offers his hand. "Nice meeting you Nyx."

-

Nyx takes the hand to shake it, still kind of overwhelmed then she ohs "Is your email on the net.. I mean your real one" she looks to see if you wrote it on the napkin too or not "Ill call your friend."

-

He wrote his work email. Not his public one that get spammed. A lot. "Not that one. Don't go spreading it around now." He winks. "Not that I think you will."

-

Nyx carefully tucks the napkin into her wallet for safety reasons and nods "Thanks.. bobby." another shy smile, she moves to start gathering up a whole lot of bits of paper, watching you go.

-

He waves once more and then heads out and back toward the subway. Been an interesting night to be sure. Bobby's curious to see how it'll all play out. Time will tell.
