With everything that's gone on, Dick is hoping that having a chance to get coffee like real people might be a welcome break. So, he's asked Babs to finally join hin for coffee in the morning…if it's not too early. It's before his classes and after his evening patrol — he's showered and dressed to go directly to the Academy once their coffee 'date' is complete. He hopes he's left enough time, but not too much.

These things are tricky.

Seated at a table with one chair removed to accomodate Babs' chair. Bacon has been ordered…because who doesn't like bacon?

***

Early for Babs normally means that she's just finishing up supporting the Bats, and others, in keeping the streets of Gotham clear of crime. Night time is always busy. So, a quick shower and change, and she's entering the Cafe now. Moving over to the table, Babs positions her chair, and puts her tablet on the table. "Morning Dick. Please tell me you've already ordered the coffee…" she smiles as she settles.

Dick Grayson returns the smile, "They're just waiting for you to come to the table." Indeed, the coffee mugs are brought over almost immediately with the cream and sugars set down before they pour the coffee into the mugs. The bacon is also brought over as well as a couple of menus. "I wasn't sure if you wanted more, but I figured I'd order some sort of 'appetizer' as well as the coffee."

***

Babs takes the coffee as it's placed on the table and adds cream to it before taking an appreciative sip. "Mmmm, I needed that." Looking at the bacon as it's delivered she smirks a little "Because everythings better with Bacon? I'll see how I feel after that… right now, that seems just fine to me." Holding the coffee cup in both hands, Babs sits back in her chair and watches Dick and waits…

***

Dick Grayson adds both cream and sugar to his coffee and stirs before taking a strip of the bacon. The menu is glanced at, and he'll probably order something else as he has a full day ahead. "Of course, everything's better with bacon." There's another glance to the menu before he notes Babs watching him. There's another pause before he clears his throat, "So…I guess there are two ways we could do this." There's a sheepish sort of grin then, "We can talk business, of sorts, or we can…I mean, I know it's just coffee, but I was hoping it could be a…even a pre-date if not a date? If you'd rather not, we can talk business."

***

"I'm not even sure what that means, Dick, a date…" Babs laughs "We do have ''business'' to discuss, specifically Tim, but if you want to discuss other things as well, I'm open to that. We've known each other long enough to do that, surely." Babs puts her cup down and takes a piece of Bacon herself.

***

"You, Miss Gordon, are evading my question." But she is right. "Let's start talking about Tim then…and move on from there. How's he doing? I've been meaning to come by…Every time I have, Alfred said he was resting." He looks down to his coffee and takes a sip, "What happened? What do I need to know, and what can I do to help?"

***

"Not evading Dick… " Babs says quietly but then Tim is mentioned and she's all business "It wasn't so bad." her voice lowers to avoid being overhead "Agent May took Tim to a private facility run by a charitable organisation. It's independent and I doubt SHIELD knows much about it. It took me a lot of digging after the fact to find what I've found. They… help abused meta humans recover." Babs sighs, remembering the tense words she'd had with Bobby. "The guy in charge at the facility, I've worked with him before and he refused to let anyone else touch Tim… didn't remove his mask and didn't take samples of any sort. I got Alfred to send in a team to pick Tim up and take him to the Batcave." Shrugging Babs finishes with "He's still recovering."

***

"In the Batcave?" Dick lowers his voice as well, "He'll get excellent care, but do you think that's the best place for him to be? I mean, knowing how Batman is…" he's fairly convinced that Tim's self-destruction had something to do with Batman. It's always due to Batman. Ahem. "He's welcome at my place. I told him that…and I'll tell you that as well. If he needs to get out, he can stay with me if he wants."

A glance is given to the menu before he orders an omelette. Only when the server has left does he continue. "Let me know what I can do to help. And you weren't evading?"

***

"I don't know what the best thing is for Tim at the moment, and it's not my decision, it's his. But, his injuries were extensive: a through and through, three broken ribs, some really nasty electrical burns. The Batcave, with Alfred and real doctors was the most logical and safest place for him to be. As he recovers" Babs closes her eyes momentarily "We, he, will work out what to do next."

"Wasn't evading the question… you speak of a 'date' as if it's some wondrous thing… what do you expect to happen on a date because I sure as hell don't know anymore." Babs is still eating the first piece of bacon.

***

Dick Grayson nods, "I'll try to be patient with him, but he hasn't been making the best choices lately. I don't know if this means we need to get some sort of intervention going at this point and try to make him see what we've been seeing." He sips at his coffee, "Well, I guess…are you open to date-type activities? I mean, we get takeout and eat together, but…it's weird because we do know each other so well, but would you be interested in going to movies or…the theatre…or for a walk in the park? Things like that?"

***

Babs gives Dick an amused look "This sounds like a conversation we had not long ago… I've already said I'd be interested but let's start as friends… if it… grows to something else then it does. We are good friends and I would hate for that to change." The piece of Bacon finished, she returns her attention to her coffee and sighs, considers and then continues "You should know you're not the only one asking me out… and that's not meant to hurt or tease you Dick, it just is. I prefer things to be out in the open so there's no surprises." Babs sighs again like she's really uncomfortable.

***

"I'd hate for that to change too, but I wasn't sure if you wanted to try," Dick starts but finishes off his coffee. The server shows up with his omelette and goes to refill the coffees. "Want some?" is asked while the server tops off the coffee. Once they're gone once more, he asks, "Who else is asking you out? And…how do you feel about it? Do you like them?"

***

Shaking her head at the offer of some of the Omelette, Babs takes another piece of bacon. She shrugs "I don't know if I want more than friendship, Dick. We've been down this path before… but friends can still do all those things. Like I said, if it grows to something more…"

Babs looks back at Dick and bites her lip "As to who… Rowan has asked to spend more time with me, as friends, we both enjoy each others company. He's uncomplicated and knows that Babs has secrets she can't share… he's no idea how big those are, but he's a soldier and doesn't pry." Pausing to eat the piece of bacon, she continues "The new Bat, Batwing… you've still to meet him… he's indicated a very strong preference to take Babs out. I've politely rejected him several times now. He's nice and likeable, but I just don't need any… complications… with a new team member, it could get very messy."

***

"But you like this Rowan guy," Dick presses some before he starts to dig into his omelette. "We have a new Bat? When was someone going to tell me?" He shakes his head, "I should just move to Bludhaven and be done with this. Honestly, sometimes I don't blame Tim for getting upset at what goes on. I see where he's coming from."

***

"I'm telling you now. Given I've been dealing with that during the Tim thing, apart from notifying Batman that I think he's ok, that's all I've had time to do." Babs answers quietly "Apart from that, I'm sure I tried to get you to meet him… but couldn't get in touch. Instead I got Tim to bring him in for me."

"He's going to need help in the field and I was going to get you and Tim to help him." Babs keeps her attention on Dick… the other question quite forgotten… Batfamily is more important.

***

"I don't know who this new guy is and I'm not sure that I feel comfortable giving some stranger a bunch of secrets or 'showing him the ropes'. If," his voice lowers, "If Batman wants a new sidekick, he should train him himself. I don't have time to be training someone else…someone else I don't know. You may vet him, but I don't like hearing about this second-hand. No offense, but if he's one of us, then I want a little more about him than hearing about him in a diner." Dick stabs the omelette before pointing out, "You didn't answer me. Do you like this Rowan guy?"

***

"I said as much when I told you about Rowan. The answer is yes, I like Rowan." Babs says shortly, her eyes flashing "I've noted your answer and won't bother you again with requests for assistance." Babs folds her hands infront of her and just stares at Dick.

***

Dick Grayson is a bit hurt, he won't deny it. And it's more than just this 'Rowan' guy. "If you want my help, I need more information. That's like saying 'Here's this guy. Give him all your secrets and teach him everything you spent 12 years learning.' How would you like it if I said, 'Hey, here's someone I just met. Teach them everything you know about computers.'?"

***

Babs sighs "You need to learn to control your temper, Dick. This is the second time you've snapped at me for just doing my job. I'm so very focussed on my work, Dick, that I just assume you know I'll do all that and more… instead you go off on a tirade." she shrugs "You will know as much as I can tell you, you will get to meet the person first and I will give you the whole story… " Babs has not moved, her hands are still crossed and she continues to watch Dick, carefully.

***

"Try to look at this from my side, Barbara. I'm working my ass off for…this family, and I'm still treated like some sort of pariah. I know why Tim gets so frustrated…" and it's why he sometimes distances himself from the others. "Too many secrets and too many people being taken for granted." He stabs some more at the breakfast before he looks back at Babs, "What are you staring at?"

***

Babs says quietly. "I'm sorry you feel that way, Dick. I can't do more than I do to keep you all informed and deal with the fallout because a message isn't received, or someone thinks they should have been contacted and weren't." Babs hasn't mentioned that she still has to speak to Batman in person about Tim and Luke and that's not something she's particularly relishing. Her face as calm as she can keep it, Babs continues "Thank you for the coffee and the Bacon but I think I'll go back to work now. I hope your day gets better." As she reaches to pick up her tablet that's on the table.

***

"I'm not blaming you, Babs," Dick points out. "I know you work hard and I know that you end up bearing the brunt of our frustration because you're shoved in the middle of everything. It just…wasn't the best way to say 'Hey, by the way, there's someone new on the team'." He shakes his head, "I haven't even met Damian, you know."

***

"Then go and speak to Batman about it and stop sniping at me because you feel left out." Babs rejoinds. "I've already tried to apologise to you. You've not missed anything by not meeting Damian, and just to keep you in the loop, he's out too. So there's something else you can snipe at me about for not telling you earlier."

Her tablet in hand, Babs turns her chair and heads towards the door. "Thankyou again for coffee and bacon. I really hope your day gets better."

***

"You're welcome," Dick finally offers. "I hope your day does as well. Good luck with Rowan," is offered even as he finished off his omelette. The food is, indeed, paid for with a generous tip. "Guess we really don't know each other that well after all," is murmured even as he gets ready to follow her out.

***

Babs just shakes her head. "Don't be a stranger, Dick… We know each other plenty well…." and she slips through the door out onto the street, heading back towards the Clocktower.
