Rowan's last conversation with Oracle had ended with them talking about his home and the various things that can be found and seen there. He gets the feeling that maybe Arthur wouldn't appreciate him handing out Atlantean Tech, but their culture? Well, that seems fair. So on his next visit in addition to more tea (this time something called 'gunpowder tea') he's brought several scrimshaw carvings and small statuettes from the nearest Atlantean settlement. Mostly they depict oceany thingss. Fish, sharks, whales, underwater vistas and the like.

-

They're seated at the table in Babs kitchen, sharing a cup of the gunpowder tea, looking at what he's bought her to look at. Babs takes a sip of the tea, purses her lips and looks in the cup "Well, I've heard it's stronger in caffeine than regular green tea. It's certainly very nice, Rowan." After placing the cup back on the table, she picks up one of the Statuettes and turns it over in her hands, a look of keen interest on her face "This is really quite lovely too, tell me about it and what you've bought me…"

-

"Atlantean Art." Rowan says with a smile. "Stone and bone sculptures. Their artists have a talent for it and I thought, since your people seem to value the creation of art so much, you might want to look at it." The work is fine. Incredibly detailed and in some cases quite delicate. The fish nearly look as if they'd start swimming if you plopped them in a bowl.

-

Babs smiles as well "It's beautiful, Rowan…" exchanging the statuette for a carving, Babs takes her time in examining it. "It's so… intricate…" she says almost to herself, smoothing a finger gently over the surface, feeling the carving as much as she looks at it. She shakes her head "The detail is just amazing" Looking at Rowan, there is appreciation for the craftspersonship in her eyes…

-

"The Atlanteans take their art quite seriously. Well, the good ones do anyway." Rowan smiles, examining a bit of scrimshaw on a whalebone. "They prefer their art to be as lifelike as possible. Some pieces are actually enchanted to be more lifelike than ordinarily possible. I wasn't sure magic would be appreciated though."

-

That has Babs intrigued, she doesn't get to deal with magic a lot. Swapping the carving for her cup of tea, Bab sips at it slowly. "Enchanted to be more lifelike, tell me more, it sounds fascinating… do the pieces move, do the carvings move… what's the result?" Obviously her mind is running on the possibilities.

-

"The less complex enchantments make the statues and carvings feel like the real thing when touched. More complex ones can make them animate, swim about, even perform small chores. The Atlanteans are big fans of mixing form and function." Rowan smiles. "I can find some for you next time if you like. Do you have a fish tank?"

-

Shaking her head slowly, Babs says a little sadly "No fishtank, I fear nothing would survive if I did." It's true, Babs gets very focussed on her work and she would forget to feed herself, let alone poor fish. "Perform small chores… can you give me an example." It's obvious she's enjoying the tea as she talks with Rowan.

-

"Well, even a large bowl of water wold do." Rowan notes. "But they pick up things. Clothing. Clean up, or fetch small needed items. Or keep track of a small selection of things. The possibilities are limited only by the form. Some prefer not to use living creatures to do such things, and actual fish are governed by instinct that even the Atlanteans can't entirely override. Plus Atlanteans like beauty and fish at those depths are… rather ugly."

-

Babs has forgotten that the things Rowan has bought are from a city that is located many leagues under the sea surface. "Oh…" she says quietly, "They work in the water… of course they would." shaking her head, she drinks her tea and thinks "If not fish, what's the most popular creature they use?"

-

"Mmmmm. Well octopi and squid are fairly common. Also large shrimp, crabs and… other things I do not believe surfacer's have names for." Rowan muses. There really is an awful lot of life down there, and all of it strange. "I wish I could show you. Perhaps at some point the scientists will do some specimen research and I'll have some pictures to share."

-

Looking at Rowan as he speaks, Babs smiles "I wish you could show me too… everything you've shown me so far has been amazing" she murmurs. "Pictures sound good though!" The redhead puts the teacup down and stretches slightly before returning her attention to the carvings and considering them again.

-

"Well… perhaps one day I'll be able to show you in person. It would not be good at the moment. Political tensons between there and the surface." Rowan says quietly "That's part of why I'm here. To understand the surface better." Rowan says quietly. "Still one day, with the right magic or technology…"

-

"Perhaps…" Babs says quietly as she cants her head at the Blue Warrior. "And is your mission progressing well, Rowan?" Babs knows a little about the situation but as it's not directly Gotham related, she's not dug particularly deeply.

-

"Well enough." Rowan shrugs. "It's something to keep me busy while my status is sorted out I'm sure. Though I don't know how many other people His Majesty cold send. Many Atlanteans can't actually leave the ocean." He scoots a bit closer, sipping the tea and enjoying the company.

-

Watching Rowan move closer, Babs smiles her green eyes sparkling. "Well enough… is there anything that could be going better for you… or is it just time?" Finishing her cup of tea she looks at the empty cup a little sadly "That was really nice…"

-

"Would you like more?" The beauty of tea is that there can (almost) always be more. Rowan half rises, ready to brew another cup for Babs. "Just time. I do wish I were free to look for my people…" He may take matters into his own hands one day.

-

"Yes, I would… thank you… " Babs looks at the Blue Warrior "I wish I could help you somehow…" she sighs and lifts a shoulder

-

Rowan leans over and puts a hand over Babs. "You do help. It's nice having someone to talk to about this who has a different perspective. And it's nice being trusted." Even if Babs can't share everything, the fact that she shares anything is a sign of trust and he knows it.

-

Babs' is getting used to Rowan touching her… and she smiles up at him "Thank you… for saying that." Letting out a deep breath "Would you like me to help with the tea?"

-

"Of course, if you'd like." Rowan goes to put the kettle back on, letting Babs get the tea ready for proper steeping. She's much better at timing and steeping and the delicacies of this kind of thing than he is. "And you're welcome. I say it because it's true."

-

Busying herself preparing the tea and watching Rowan. "It's still nice to hear it said… the cups are prepared, waiting for the water to boil.

-

Rowan sets the now heated kettle near Babs to let her work her magic. Which it is. Brewing tea to perfection is an art not easily mastered and near mystical in its transendence. "May I ask if you have any plans for the upcoming holiday?"

-

It's not really magic, more science, but who's splitting hairs? Babs adds water to the cups and lets the tea steep. Blinking at Rowans question, Babs looks up from her task… "Holiday… you mean Christmas?" she hasn't really considered it "I'm not sure…. I'll probably be here… I've not made any plans" she's a little embarrased by that fact.

-

"I believe that's what it's called yes." Rowan smiles. "Is it not traditional to celebrate with family or friends?" He knows Babs has both so he's a bit surprised that she doesn't have any plans.

-

The tea is steeped and Babs gestures to Rowan… "Teas ready…" taking her cup, she moves back to the table. "Typically yes… I'll spend some of it with my Father, probably lunch… but apart from that, I have nothing fixed." she smiles back at Rowan… "Are you truly surprised that I'm not organised for such things?"

-

"A bit. You seem very organized, comfortable, indeed, with organization where others would not be." Rowan says quietly. "If you are not busy, and it is not an imposition I would love to celebrate it a little with you."

-

"I would like that, Rowan… " Babs offers a small smile "This time of year, everyone is busy and organisation takes a backseat… now you've prompted, I'll pay more attention. But, that will include time for you as well." Babs looks back to Rowan, an encouraging look on her face.

-

Rowan looks very encouraged indeed. He doesn't require much of Babs, really. He just enjoys her company. "Then I shall look forward to it." He winks now. "And find an appropriate gift for you."

-

Babs is a little flustered "You don't need to buy me anything, you've done so much already…" it's hard not to smile though "Come, sit beside me… " sipping the tea she's just made, she thinks for a few minutes "I can do a meal for us… if you like…"

-

"I'd like that Babs. And if you prefer I will not look for a gift, however I am given to understand that gifts are traditional and certainly…" Rowan smiles. "… I am quite happy to get you one."

-

Shrugging, Babs smiles back "Traditional, but necessary… I know that I find the joy is in the giving, not receiving" Canting her head "Please, come sit… I take it you don't celebrate this holiday?"

-

Rowan does sit, right next to Babs. He seems to enjoy doing so, really. Certianly when they watched the sunrise he seemed to. "Not back on my home earth no. We didn't celebrate holidays of any kind really… war doesn't take a day off."

-

"Well that seems fair. Have you asked what they do here? I'm not sure how the Atlanteans do things." Babs smiles as he sits down beside her… she is very comfortable with his presence.

-

"Orca racing apparently. Queen Mera has suggested I participate in the next one. Apparently it's something like what you call a… rodeo… here." He's not seen one yet, but at least to Rowan the concept seems similar.

-

That makes Babs laugh. The vision of Mera or Rowan, riding an Orca Whale in a race or rodeo of some type. "Maybe you should participate, I'm sure you'll be quite adept at it." she's seen him fight, and knows he's physically fit and capable.

-

"Perhaps I will. It seemed like a good way to… observe Atlantean culture as well. It's ironic that I'm as much a stranger in the ocean as I am on land." Ironic, and a bit lonely sometimes. Rowan doesn't really belong anywhere on Earth 626.

-

That makes Babs smile a little sadly "I'm sorry, Rowan… " she says softly. This time, it's her turn to put her hand over his. "Getting involved in the events of your community, may help… even if it's not your true community… people often find homes in the strangest of places."

-

Rowan turns his hand palm up and gives Babs' a brief squeeze. "It's true… it's just… strange." His smile flickers only a little and then comes back. "And it hasn't been all bad. I met you, after all."

-

Babs smiles as he squeezes her hand and closes her fingers around his. She notes the slight flicker but smiles "Strange isn't necessarily bad… and yes, I got to meet you… something that would never have occured otherwise."

-

"So that's something to be thankful for." Honestly, meeting Babs has made his time on the surface much easier and more pleasant than Rowan otherwise expected it to be. "Well, clearly it's not. You're surrounded and defended by strange."

-

Babs snorts a little, "Strange may just be where I live… that's true." she admits. "And yes, I'm thankful to have met you." Sipping the tea she made, she watches Rowan… "Feeling a touch better about things at the moment."

-

Rowan chuckles softly. "Me, or you?" Because he is yes. And he hopes she is. He knows that she's had a very difficult couple of weeks and that especially at this time of year having a hard time is all the harder for surfacers.

-

"That wasn't a question was it" Babs laughs "I was referring to you, but I always feel better after seeing you… things are settling down again" until the next thing happens of course… Squeezing Rowans hand, Babs looks more relaxed than she did a few days ago.

-

Rowan smiles and returns that squeeze, but doesn't entirely let up, which leaves him just holding Babs hand. "I am feeling better. You have a way of helping with that, really, and I always look forward to our teas together."
