Jericho has had his attention split of late, but the upswing in HYDRA activity in New York and the rather disturbing appearance of a man with a polymorpher (who tried to kill him) a couple of days ago has pulled him back to begin investigating an identified Hydra nest in Brooklyn. He's gotten a bit of chatter out of this place that's a bit unusual and he's fairly certain that it's the source of the most recent attack on him.

At present he's walking down the street which is at this hour of the night fairly desserted. His blade case swings behind him and his eyes glimmer but there's not otherwise any indication that he's doing anything in particular. Certainly not eyeing the derelict apartment building to his left. Being back in town he did let May know he was going to be poking around. And of course, Illyana generally knows most things Jericho.

-

As Jericho passes by an alleyway, an arm extends towards him holding a to-go cup of steaming goodness. Nights are chilly in New York in December. Not that you'd know the time of the year by looking at Illyana. She has on a light hoodie to go with her T-shirt and jeans and those kick-your-ass boots. The blonde's sudden appearance would be a surprise to most people, but Jericho isn't most people.

"Getting into trouble?" She asks dryly, sipping her own hot tea latte. Her blue eyes are half-lidded almost lazily, one shoulder leaning against the alley wall. The cup is wiggled in a 'hurry up and take this' manner. "I figured you might be cold."

-

Melinda May did acknowledge Jericho's message saying he'd be in the area, but got held up late at the Triskelion, so wasn't able to get over to this area sooner. In fact, she's just now buckling in to her generic little off-duty car in the building's parking lot, and sends a text back to Trent. "Meet? If so, where?"

Just knowing there's a HYDRA cell in Brooklyn is frustrating, so May really would like to see them stomped for being so close to SHIELD HQ. And, she's quietly armed herself in case things turn ugly. Which they seem to do around the hacker with almost alarming frequency.

-

Jericho takes that cup of hot joe and smiles a bit. "Maybe just a little. Thanks." A little trouble. A little cold. Could be either, or both. "Checking up on me?" He asks quietly. He hasn't had a chance to catch up with her recently, only knowing from their link that she hadn't been in any particular distress.

May's text gets a quick grin and he fires one back. Near the derelict apartment building on seventh. Not far at all. Not alone but no hostiles yet. Company would be nice. Has he sends it though he's filtering through the CCTV and traffic cam feeds in the area looking for any signs that other people know he's here. It's always a bit hard to say.

-

Illyana smirks a bit at the non-answer. "Careful. You sound like a demon." She teases dryly and sips at her own drink. A brow arches upwards a bit. "You've got That Look." She says, tone as lazy as her expression. It's just the sharpness to that blue gaze that makes it clear she's far from having her guard down out here on the street.

Seventh. That's distressingly close. May drives out of the parking garage and toward aforementioned derelict apartment building, figuring she'll either spot Trent and company along the way, or will park her car a few blocks past said building and double back on foot. And, now's as good a time as any to see exactly how good Howard Stark's knitting skills turned out to be. As well as his weaponization of a wool scarf. Crazy man.

-

Jericho chuckles. "I do spend a fair bit of time with them." He glances toward the seemingly empty building. "Yeah. Someone's taking swings at me again, but this time they're being a lot more sophisicated about it. One of the hitters was using a polymorpher like mine, but not restricted by any viruses. And another…" He looks very seriously at Illy. "They had a mage. And they targetted another female mage who had happened to be in the area, thinking, I think, that she was with me." Which means someone is trying to account for either her or Partisan. He's not sure.

Jericho and Illyana are standing at the mouth of an alley way across the street from a condemned apartment building which looks, at least so far as anyone can tell, comepletely empty.

-

Illyana's expression looks almost bored. But he knows her well enough to know that's just part of her own poker face. "They do like to target the folks around you in a bad case of mistaken identity, don't they?" Her gaze flicks towards the building briefly. "So. Are we gonna check it out?" She takes an elaborately slow sip of her drink. "Did you know that demons like to play hide and seek?"

Melinda May drives with the care and caution of someone used to driving in less than ideal conditions. The generic little car splashes past Jericho and Illyana, the driver seemingly sparing them only a very brief glance and then turning the corner at the next intersection.

-

"Aaaaand there's Agent May unless I miss my guess." Jericho's got good eyes. They ought to be, as flashy (no pun intended) as they are. "Yeah, we're going to check it out." There was a time when Jericho would have said that he was going to check it out and she was welcome along. But it's we now. Definitely we.

"Place is way too quiet, by the way. No network signals. No lights. No power. No thermal. But signs are that it was being used as recently as a few hours ago so…" He's not sure at all what they'll find in there. Another reason to be grateful to have Illyana and May along.

-

"You wanna start at the top and move down, or at the bottom and flush anyone to the roof?" Illyana asks, her gaze sliding along the street to try to pick out the SHIELD agent that Jericho's so chummy with. While she doesn't dislike May, the older woman doesn't really ping her emotional radar.

-

Melinda May parks her car in front of a nicely lit all-night cafe then walks around to arrive from the direction opposite where she left the vehicle. She stops near the two, glancing at the phone in her hand as she does so as if pausing to ask them something. Which, of course, she does. "How much resistance are you expecting in there?"

The scarf she's wearing against the cold is strangely metallic, and Jericho might well see the electrical traces threaded through the entire piece of fabric.

-

"Enough that I brought this." Jericho flicks his case and lets his sword unfold. "I think start at the bottom. The top of the building is too exposed to be used. I'd have seen something and I'm sure they know it's easier to find things up there. They'll be below ground if they're anywhere." He looks about.

"Hey here May. Nice of you to drop by… this could get pretty ugly. You okay with that?"

-

The building being something that Illyana can just look over to, she doesn't need to scry to open a stepping disk to it. One opens against the alley wall like a sudden, glowing Hobbit door even as she looks over to May and gives her what might be called a friendly smirk. "Agent May. Fashionable as always." The sarcasm. It burns, precious.

-

"I wouldn't be here if I wasn't, Trent." She then nods to Illyana neutrally enough. "Ms. Rasputin. Thank you." Whether she simply missed the sarcasm or is pointedly ignoring it, that's for someone else to decide. Pulling a pair of batons from their concealed pockets in her jacket, she steps toward the glowing portal thing then waits for one of the others to step through first.

-

Jericho steps through with them. The stepping disk opens up into a room that is, thankfully, devoid of any enemies, and also much light. THat's provided as Jericho's traces light up. May might notice that his forearms, despite having a coat on, are covered in what looks like mercury, as if bracers. They weren't before he produed his blade.

They aren't alone. There are voices coming from a short distance. Down the hall it seems. The hacker creeps to the door and opens it, listening.

"Will have to adjust quickly if we can't identify her." Is all the conversation that can be made out.

-

Illyana is perhaps the most unarmed of them all, at least in terms of hardware. The stepping disk winks out behind them, dropping them further into darkness so the room is lit only by Jericho's traces. She lets the hacker take the lead, shadowing him with lighter steps than one would expect from boots that aggressive.

-

Melinda May can't help but wonder who the conversation is referring to, though it's only for a moment as she really doesn't care all that much. She's also ready for a fight, nodding to Jericho and ready to follow his lead on this. It's his party after all.

-

Jericho steps out into the hallway and creeps toward the source of the noise and conversation though it becomes muffled. It's only a couple of doors down and the hallway is otherwise fairly bare. A few other doors, all locked, line it. This looks like the maintenance space of the apartment. As they reach the door Jericho leans to get a peek inside the slightly cracked portal. Then frowns. Then his eyes widen. All he can see is a tape recorder playing on the table.

His traces suddenly turn blue and flare to full power. "It's a trap!"

Then the entire wall opposite them caves in to reveal a man in digital armor like but unlike Jericho's (it's not animal themed for starters) backed by a squad of armored, energy rifle wielding hitters.

-

Illyana turns as the wall comes a tumblin' down and her eyes narrow. "I hate surprise parties." She tells them, annoyance heating her tone as she lifts a hand to summon a stepping disk like a shield in front of her and large enough for May to duck behind with her. She can't dodge bullets, let alone lasers.

"Also, not cool to stack the odds. Let's balance things out shall we?" Another stepping disk opens behind them, a gate straight to her demon pets to help thin the HYDRA herd.

-

Melinda May immediately sets the taser function in one of her batons to sparking and throws it at the digital-armored man, hoping to short him out, then ducks behind Illyana's really pretty useful stepping disk. "I hate surprise parties too." She takes the chance to tuck away her remaining baton and pull a small stack of throwing knives. She really isn't here to play around. "Want some party favors?" she says as she offers the knives to the blonde hilt-first.

-

The blasts that are angled in Illyana and May's direction go initially right for them but when that proves ineffective (stepping disks are good cover) they start to go to either side. Most of the energy fire goes right into Jericho though and though the Hacker is now not in sight both women can hear his traces sparking. Illyana can sense the pain they cause too. They can also hear the impact of blade on energy field as he finds his hands very tied with the guy wielding his own hardware.

The addition of demons to the fight evens things right up though and in moments the HYDRA goons who are not dead are busy fighting off a small horde of demons in a very confined space.

-

May's decision to add a spark to the armored man's life has… interesting results. On Trent, that wouldn't do anything at all. On him the sudden short circuit causes the digital armor to flicker for a moment before the stepping disc goes up.

-

Feeling the echoes of Jericho's pain sparks fire in Illyana's cold blue eyes. She looks over to May and gives a nod as she takes a couple of the knives. "Thanks. My favorite kind of Christmas presents. Sharp things."

Then she turns to face the wall behind them, arm coming back and then moving forward in a throw in the complete opposite direction as the bad guys. But that proves not to matter when a small stepping disk opens to swallow the knife as another opens at ninety degrees away so the sharp blade takes the HYDRA soldier in the side of the neck.

Jericho can sense a sort of concern/query from Illyana, more of a 'do you need help' more than an 'are you OK'. That she knows intuitively.

-

Oh ho. May did happen to see the very beginning of a flicker in that person's armor when the baton hit him, and she thinks now is the perfect time to field test Howard Stark's idea of fashionable hand knits. She sets the rest of the throwing knives on a convenient window ledge for Illyana to use as she wants, then risks ducking out from behind the protection of the stepping disk to launch herself at the armored man fighting Jericho when she sees an opening. It looks like she's aiming to garrote the person with her metallicish scarf.

-

The answer Illyana gets back is part uncertainty - he's never fought someone with equipment similar to his so he's not really sure what kind of help he needs - and part concern himself. Illyana and May can both handle themselves but they're also people that he'd do horrible, horrible things for if they got hurt. Of course it seems that May's going to assist him whether he needs it or not. The scarf wraps around the digital armor of the man Jericho's fighting, who gets swung to the side by the hacker so that May can't be shot in the back.

The Hydra shocktroops are all but done for but Illyana can sense… well it feels like someone's scrying them… and gathering a lot of power. Nearby.

-

With the troops and their guns pretty much taken are of, either down or occupied with demons, Illyana lets the stepping disk shield drop as her head comes up. Her eyes search, as if there were something to see and then Jericho senses a spike of warning just before the demon queen taps his magical reserves, pulling a small but steady stream of magic from him. Etheral light sparks into being, curling around one of her hands like a fighter might tape them up before a fight. "We've got Bad Shit about to drop!" She warns the other two. She's not sure what, but Something Wicked This Way Comes.

-

Melinda May pulls her garrote-scarf as tight as she can around the armored man's neck, then triggers the Widow's Bite-esque shock circuits that the inventor-in-an-LMC-body put into the scarf. Fingers crossed it's enough stronger than the baton and can sustain the zap enough to totally ruin the guy's armor. The other Bad Shit about to drop she'll deal with when it gets here. Right here and now, she's concentrating on the biggest target she can see.

-

The armor on the polymorpher wielding guy flickers again, this time enough for Jeriho to slip his blade in. Literally. His soulbound blade comes out the other side. The hacker twists and yanks it back as Illyana shouts her warning.

Bad Shit turns out to be a demon. Not a limbo demon, mind. Illyana's got most of those on lockdown. No, someone tears a portal open to a nether dimension and a large, tentacle faced horror crawls out and roars. Whether by incompetence or design it's too big to fit down here and as it slams it's shoulders into the walls the building above them begins to shake and shudder.

-

"Looks like someone bit off more than they could chew." Illyana says, her voice raised enough to be heard above the roaring and the crashing. "Watch my back, would you? I need to go show someone why I'm the damned Darkchilde." Her left hand closes around the hilt of her soulsword that suddenly shimmers into being, the blade wreathed in eldrich fire as she strides forth, words that seem gutteral and just wrong tripping from her tongue as she speaks to the demon in a challenging tone. Presumably something along the lines of 'go home or die'.

-

Melinda May gets herself and her scarf free the moment Jericho skewers the armored man, wrapping the accessory knitted with care and probably also mischievous glee back around her own neck just in time to see huge, tentacled, and ugly arrive. "Holy…" Yeah. She'll just, be over here, hopefully finding a clue as to the source of Davy-Cthulu-Jones's arrival. If she can take down the summoner, maybe that'll be enough to send the nasty back to where it came from.

-

Ask and ye shall receive. There's a cackle of glee from the stairs behind May and Jericho. It's a good bet that anyone still in the building has something to do with this thing's arrival.

The monstrosity forces it's way more out of the portal and into the building, pushing masonry aside as it does. The already shaky building can't take much more of this. Jericho dispatches a pair of still living Hydra and then eyes the beast. Illy may sense his concern. He'd rather not the building come down on the two of them if he has his way.

-

Jericho gets a brief touch of warmth in reply to his concern before there's the equivalent of giving him a push out the door. Or at least, away from the large demon so he can go deal with the other pressing issue.

When the the demon doesn't take her suggestion of backing off, she brings the soulsword around into a double-handed hold and leaps for the thing that dwarfs her in size with a yell, bringing it around in a wide arc. The demon's about to learn first-hand what the Soulsword does to magical beings.

-

Okay, the building starting to collapse in on itself is going to get noticed by the authorities, and the last thing Trent OR Rasputin needs is a bunch of LEOs crawling all over the place asking questions. She tosses Jericho a look, tilting her head toward the cackling summoner, then makes her way out of the building to stop any emergency service types before they get too close. Oh, and if she has to punch or kick or otherwise take down any HYDRA goons on her way, well, just DARN.

-

The blade describes a glittering arc toward the demonic being… and as it hits the c'thulhoid creature literally begins to implode… which is when Illy discovers why this particular creature was summoned. The destructon of the creature at the edge of the soulblade creates a sucking void that draws at… well… everything, but especially hard at anything with any magic in it. Which means two people in particular feel it worse.

-

Illyana's heavy boots hit the ground as the thing starts to implode, and Jericho can feel the spike of surprise as it starts to suck the pair of them inwards. She drives her blade into the ground in an attempt to give her something to hold onto against the force of the implosion.

-

Jericho's own blade digs into the brickwork as the vaccum intensifies. He's not sure where it goes but he's betting it doesn't go anywhere he'd care to be. After a moment he glances behind him and kicks off the wall, folding his blade away and using his claws to dig into the concrete with one hand as he reaches back toward Illyana with the other. The more magic, it seems, the greater the pull. Illyana and her blade are both magic… and he's already done that math. He doesn't say anything, he figures he doesn't have to, he just reaches back.

One other slightly worrying thing is that the pull isn't seeming to do the building's structural stability any favors.

-

Illyana's expression is set and grim, her hand tightening around the hilt of the Soulsword and hauling herself forward a bit through sheer brute strength until her hand manages to catch Jericho's in a tight grasp. She has to yell to be heard over the vortex. "I can try to port us out of here, but the way it's mucking with the magical fields…" It could Go Very Wrong.

-

Jericho's power-field enshrouded hand closes around Illyana's and holds tight. He's guessing that the vortex can't possibly last that long but that's not based on anything but hope that someone didn't just open a magical black hole in New York City. On the other hand, if it brings the building down on them it doesn't need to last long at all. He glances about, weighing the options. Stairs are too far to make a break for it… he glances back to her and nods, preparing to switch from claws to wings at the last moment.

-

The soulsword winks out as Illyana takes Jericho's hand, which frees up her other one to grab hold of him as well so she can hold on tight. Despite her slight frame, the Russian is all steel. Maybe she gets it from her brother. She looks towards her feet, floating in the air as they're pulled towards that magical black hole and then back to Jericho, meeting his amber eyes. She gives a nod and a stepping disk opens between them and the source of the suck so as soon as he lets go, they'll fall into it.

-

Jericho's wolf armor winks out of existance as he lets go and his wings unfurl. He can't use them to escape the pull - there's not enough room between it and them - but he can use it to guide their 'fall'. Which is a good thing since Illyana was most correct. The Void is sucking at the stepping disk (or perhaps at what's beyond it) as much as it is at Illyana and Jericho. His amber eyes gleam as he meets Illyanas for a long moment and then looks past her, watching to make sure they hit correctly.
