Silveroak For Lunch

Summary:
January 1, 2015: Zees in New York for some business meetings and drops in to the Silveroak Tavern for lunch to find Constantine there.

Silveroak Tavern - New York

The Silveroak Tavern sits nestled off one of those side streets in New York no one ever quite thinks about until they happen to be there. It's like a hidden gem in the city, really. Red brick facade accented by green painted wood in an old English pub style. There's no writing over it to proclaim its name. There's just a wooden sign that hangs on a copper bracket over the street, painted with a silver tree, a tankard inscribed on its trunk.

This is a neutral meeting ground. Dark, light, or wild, it matters not. All that matters is that the peace is kept and food and respite are enjoyed to their fullest.

John's sitting at a dark table, playing with a deck of cards. It's some variation of solitaire, apparently, though the rules seem a bit odd. He shuffles the deck with one hand, splitting and resetting it, eying the cards in front of him with a sullen, glazed look. The lanky magician looks like he's pretty deep in his cups, and considering the brew that Wassea serves, that's saying something.

***

Zee's been in New York again sorting out some business regarding her stage show and it's now time to get some food before her next series of meetings. For a 19 year old, Zee can be quite busy with ''work'' stuff, and that doesn't include the crime fighting she gets involved with.

Given she has a series of business meetings, Zee is dressed in a business suit, slacks, blouse and jacket. She looks set to take on the corporate world.

Having heard The Silveroak is is a nice neutral meeting ground, the young magician heads that way and is now standing at the bar come counter, perusing the menu. She's not looked around yet, so hasn't seen John as yet.

***

John's eyes flicker minutely and he looks up, spotting the business-attired young woman entering the bar. It's a new look for her, but then again, tuxedos and fishnets don't usually fly in corporate offices.

John scatters more cards on the table, flicking them with a stage hand's expertise, then plays idly with the half of a deck in his hand. "Better be careful," he says, his voice reaching Zatanna like a ventriloquist. "I don't think they card yet, but they might start checking IDs."

***

"Hamburger and fries" Zatanna flashes a big smile to the bartender "and a Cola thanks" Johns words have her turning to look at him and she smirks a little and shrugs "I have ID, if they want to check it." Of course she does.

The cola and number is given to the Mistres of Magic "We'll bring it over, love" the bartender says. And Zee approaches Johns table, "Mind if I join you?"

***

John tries to look sullen, but Zatanna's presence seems to be a panacea for what ails him. He sits a bit more upright and tries a flippant gesture at the chair, but he's obviously happy she's joining him.

"What are you up to, luv?" he asks the leggy magician, reaching for his scotch and taking a sip of it.

***

Slipping into the chair indicated, Zee's smirk gets a little wider as John tries to look sullen. The number is placed so the servers can find her, not that it's /that/ busy, and she sips on the cola whilst looking at the cards spread across the table.

Putting the drink down, she raises an eyebrow and nods to cards asking permission to touch them. "A series of business meetings for my stage show. Things need to be sorted out soon." The raven-haired mage shrugs "Grabbing something to eat between meetings."

***

John twists a wrist at Zatanna when she indicates the cards, saying 'help yourself'. He arches an eyebrow at her statement. "Sounds like the show is really taking off," John says, sounding impressed. "I had no idea you were taking that many meetings. Are you thinking of setting up a weekly show here in the tri-cities?" he inquires, sounding curious.

***

Gathering up the scattered cards, Zee starts to shuffle and manipulate them expertly, seems like this is a series of exercises she might do regularly.

"The tour went well" the young magician shrugs "And I keep getting asked for tickets to my show, which ummmm I don't have at the moment. I'm just not sure if I want to something so regular or not." The smile she gives is self-deprecating "The meetings are to discuss all that, finance, marketing, strategy… you know? Then I can make some decisions."

As they've been talking, her lunch arrives and is placed on the table in front of her. The server reaches for the number and looks at John and then back to Zee "Were you waiting for anything else?" Zee shakes her head "Nope, that's everything, thankyou."

Looking back up to John, Zees brow furrows slightly "Why are you here?"

***

"Because it's one of the only bars that serves this particular brand of scotch," Constantine says, examining the murky glass in front of him. "It's a rare thing, made only in one small monastery in Scotland, and they only make a few dozen barrels at a time. Wassea has a connection there, so she gets a barrel in now and then. Very good stuff- the best," he says, smirking lopsidedly. "What brings you here, besides lunch?"

***

The cards have been placed to the side in a pile and Zees been eating her burger, carefully so food doesn't spill on her suit. Johns question has her blinking as she puts the burger down. "It's neutral territory." she smiles wanly at that "Nimue the other day and last night, there was an attack by someone dressed as 'Daredevil' who wasn't… very powerful and very dangerous. It seemed" another shrug "prudent to come where it was safer."

***

"Good a reason as any," Constantine says with a shrug. "Odd that someone would dress up as Daredevil- bit ballsy wearing someone else's cape in our line of work," he says with a laconic tone of voice. "People tend to take some exception to stealing identies among the super community."

"I'm glad you're playing it safe. You've got some talent but you're pretty new at this game, still. Don't need your career getting snuffed out early," he says with a weak smile.

***

"Thankfully I was with others last night, they helped a lot." Xee says quietly "The 'Daredevil' thing just didn't make sense and costume was wrong, but I don't know why, couldn't put my finger on it. I need to work out who he is, he knew me that's for sure."

Johns compliment has Zee smiling slightly "Thankyou, it's one reason I joined the Titans. The power of a team and all."

***

"Officially on board with the Titans, now?" John arches an eyebrow. "Interesting group of ki- people," he amends. "Ambitious though. They're out to save the world. I suppose there are worse organizations to be on board with," he says, flickering a smile at Zatanna.

"You've been giving me the death glare for a few days now, luv," he states, slouching back in his chair. "Did I do something amiss, or are you just peeved with me in general?"

***

"The Titans are young and idealistic, kinda suits me… not so stuffy." Johns comment has her blinking "I have?" she sounds a little surprised by that comment "Have I today? I thought we were having a pleasant conversation actually."

The burger is just about gone, and Zee nudges the plate with the chips closer to the middle of the table "Have some" she murmurs before adding in a slightly louder tone "As I remember it, you stormed out of the Nowhere Market leaving Fenris and I alone. I'm still not sure why, either."

***

John considers the chips, then takes one, crunching down on it. "Yes, you have. Not today. Just off and on the last week or two as we've bumped into one another. I see you clenching your fist, grinding your teeth, narrowing your eyes at me. I was wondering why," he says with a shrug.

"I left the Market because you and Fenris are being idealistic fools about demons. There isn't a soul alive who knows them better than I- and I know the best demon is one banished back to the Pit."

***

"Maybe it's because you frustrate me in the way you speak to me" Zee says quietly "You aren't always in such a good mood" she eyes the glass of whiskey at his hand and she eats the chips slowly. "There's nothing in particular that I can think of, and if it bothers, I'm sorry. I will" turning her eyes up to John, Zee smiles wanly again "try to be more mindful of it."

"As to demons, it was one demon specfically and despite his abrupt manners, I quite liked the person. I just would hate to see anyone hurt." she grins a little "And I've already admitted to being idealistic… I'm 19 and it's permissable, perhaps even required."

***

John tries to look grouchy, but Zatanna's smile is gorgeous and a bit infectious, and the best he manages is a harrumph and a meaningless look at the knotted wood that makes up part of the booth he's sitting in.

"All right, I'm sorry too," he says sourly, as if the words cost him something. "I'm probably the definition of jaded. Too many bodies in my wake. I'd hate to see you turn out to be one more person who got caught up in a mistake. I guess I tend to err on the side of 'banish first, ask questions later'."

***

Zee nods slowly at Johns answer, still eating the chips, noting his grouchy-not-grouchy look. "I do get it John, really. But you can't blame me for wanting to understand more, which is really what I was trying to do." the young magician smiles and finishes her cola. "Apology accepted, if you'll have mine."

***

"Fine, I guess we're square," John says, with a flicker of a smile on his face. He reaches for a chip and munches on it a few times. "Ok, so what now?" he says, resttling his weight on the table, folding his arms under his chest. "Since we're all square again, or at least until the next time I manage to get under your skin," he says, a mischevious look on his face.

***

Zee smiles and shakes her head at that mischievious look "I don't know what you have in mind, but I've got an afternoon full of meetings to get to, real soon." She becomes thoughtful "I could do with some help working out who it was that attacked us last night, he seemed to know me and he kissed me." She doesn't seem worried about that, maybe because he got socked one right back. "But he does seem very dangerous."

***

"Sure, I'll help," Constantine tells Zatanna with a nod. "Especially if you're so busy," he says with a twinkle in the eye. "Though I'm glad success is coming to you so readily. Maybe I'll get around to seeing one of your big stage productions soon. But I don't want to hold you up for your appointments," he says, holding his palms out. "I'm sure I'll see you again soon."

***

Smiling as she stands, Zee holds a hand out to John "Thank you and I'm pleased things are coming together. For the help, I'll document as much as I can remember, Fenris was there, he might have something too." Canting her head slightly, Zee nods "I'll make sure you get tickets to a show, just don't show me up, alright?" the mischievious grin indicates the Mistress of Magic is teasing.

***

"Me? Do anything to show you up?" Constantine grins at Zatanna, sipping his scotch, though he does squeeze her hand, fingers lingering on hers for a moment longer than is necessary. "Perish the thought, luv," he says, reaching for his scotch. "Be careful out there, though. And do call if someone shows up and tries to steal another kiss."
