Between the Nest and work it's often forgotten but Bobby does have a flat in M-Town. Sure he can afford better now that he's working for DCI but he's kept it out of a sense of sentimentality… well… and the rent's cheap. He sleeps here a lot less but he still comes by several times a week and sometimes spends the night when it's easier to get here than it is south of New York.

Generally speaking Bobby doesn't expect trouble here. The locals know him and like him for the most part and he's not in one of the really bad parts of the ghetto.

-

Nyx is on a patrol, like usual. She ranges wandering by food all over the Big Apple. Especially the crime ridden parts of town, places that are really dangerous, like M-Town. She totally has a new hoodie, new jeans, and new sneakers after going fist to horn with Rhino the other evening. Still her bright red hair and general build is pretty recognizable.

-

Wanda is slinking her way through the shadows of M-Town. From alley to alley, head down, eyes avoiding any contact, she's doing a good job of making her way through the neighbourhood without anyone noticing her. Though since she is also dressed like a homeless whore, not many people really want to notice her. "Quiet" she hisses to no one before stopping in the middle of the street, her blue eyes scanning the roofs of nearby buildings.

-

Bobby notices… but then, Bobby's got a physicists eye for detail. He tends to recognize when something is different than it was before and he glances over in Wanda's direction, stopping from checking the mail in front of his apartment building. It's not her attire that's got his attention, it's her behavior. How many people look at the rooftops of buildings? Noooooot many. Unless you expect someone to be there. Which has him looking, now.

-

Well Nyx knows Wanda after the last few adventures so she recognizes her in the middle of the street. Staring over at a rooftop now. "Oh… .. crap" she peers over at the roof, just assuming it isn't good news. In the meantime she jogs over to the other woman, not noticing Bobby yet.

-

Wanda tilts her head slowly from side to side as she stares up at the roof. Her fingers twitch and spasm, drawing little shapes that seem to leave faint red marks in the air itself - it must be an illusion. "Three?" she asks the non-existant person next to her. The traffic is certainly starting to notice her now and there is a cacophany of horns and foul language being sent her way…to which she is completely oblivious.

-

Okay so the woman in the middle of the road is acting a little crazy. Which is not… actually… that unusual for M-Town. Not all mutants are sane. Or well put together. He starts moving that way just in case someone needs to gently usher her out of traffic. It's been known ot happen before.

-

Nyx gets to her first, having been in motion and flips a taxi driver off. She looks up at the roof still "What is it Wanda?" she glances at the guy coming up "Oh hey Bobby." right oh hey bobby

-

Wanda stares at Nyx for a long moment before she suddenly 'wakes up' and offers her a fond smile. "Hero. Is it time to be heroes again?" She looks up at the roof with a curious gaze. "Why are you looking at the roof?" A shake of her head as she now looks down at the manhole she was standing on. "In there" she whispers in a conspiratorial tone to Nyx before noticing Bobby for the first time. "Is that Bobby?" she asks Nyx, her bright smile suggesting she has completely forgotten about what may be under their feet.

-

"Yeah that's me." The ice nerd offers his hand out with a grin. "Are you a friend of Nyx's?" Also they should get out of the street but he doesn't press that one just yet. He'd like to know why Wanda was staring at rooftops and standing in the middle of the street. Even if it turns out to be nothing a few minutes on the road in front of his apartment isn't going to kill him.

He hopes.

-

Nyx looks down now "I don't know Wanda.. what is in the sewers or subway underneath us… is it going to explode up or eat us…. and Bobby Wanda.. Wanda Bobby…. .. Bobby this is the girl who I think may be telepathic and .. oh hey I dont know if I told you about her energy blasts… but the one from the gunman incident.. oh and those tiger monsters in Brooklyn… and yes this is my friend Bobby the other hero Wanda…" she steps carefully and then crouches and effortlessly yanks the manhole cover up and looks down.

-

"Nyx always talks about you" Wanda smiles to Bobby before she is moved off the manhole cover by it being lifted out of the way. "I hadn't forgotten" she complains to someone over her shoulder who isn't there before crouching down next to the super strong woman. "We have to go down there" she says solemnly. "Three." She also holds up three fingers to accentuate her words. "They…" Her brow creases as she struggles to explain herself in a foreign language. "Too many voices want to tell me about them. Can't hear properly." Then she simply jumps down without another word.

-

Bobby just shakes his head and grins. "Alright then. Let's go." He hops down, using ice to break his fall. This is a bit nuts but Nyx has earned a lot of credibility with the ice nerd and he's happy to see if she and her friend need help. Besides, whatever's down here might be dangerous.

-

Somehow Nyx is the last one on the street "Christ." she mutters and then hops down after them, hoping they are smart enough to get out of the way "Bobby this could be anything.. based on Wanda's track record….. I dont know all her powers yet but she is usually right about trouble."

-

Powers? What powers? Wanda is already heading off down the dark sewer illuminated by the occasional shaft of light through a manhole…and the scarlet glow that surrounds her hands. She sings to herself as she walks through the 'water' running down the center of the circular shaped tunnel. It doesn't seem to come to her mind to walk on the dry paths along either side of the wall. She stops at a t-junction, looking back to her companions, her flesh lit up red like she was standing in Hell. "Shhh" she whispers, holding one finger vertically over her lips. With her other hand she points down the left tunnel. And from there can be heard the scraping of metal on brick and the chattering of a hundred turning gears. And the sound is getting louder.

-

Bobby hears Nyx's warning behind him and summons a fighting stick into his hand. Well, grows one. It's just a particularly solid iceicle. Now he wishes he had his leathers. It's not protection but they do move a bit easier than street clothes. Ah well.

The ice nerd kneels down and listens. Gears? Mike? Wait, no, Mike's out of town. What the hell? He glances back to Nyx.

-

Nyx cocks her head and well keeps quiet because Wanda said quiet. At the look from Bobby she just shrugs and gives him a how the hell am I supposed to know look. She does ease around now, staying on the dry parts, and looks down the left tunnel, then starts to head that way taking point.

-

The first sight of the makers of the strange noises are green beams of light sweeping the tunnel ahead of them. The sounds of gears merging into a buzzing as it approaches. Wanda has no interest in taking point, happy to let Nyx take the lead as she continues to mumble to herself.

A metal claw emerges from beyond a corner in the sewer, digging into the old brickwork. Then another, sinking deep into the mortar to drag the giant body connected to it into view. It almost occupies the entire space of the tunnel. A spherical body with two huge gripping claws protruding from the front. Eight serrated legs propel it forward, casually crushing bricks as and stone as it does so. And coating the body, constantly moving, are dozens of smaller versions resembling spiders. The green beams emanating from 'eyes' above the claws sweep towards the trio ahead of it.

-

Bobby slowly rises as ice starts to covers him. Not much though. It cracks when he moves. Don't want that right now. He sneaks with Nyx. He's seen the young woman on youtube. In terms of direct damage dealt, Nyx is his superior. Bobby's got more practice with his though, but he's aware he does better in a support role. And as far Wanda's concerned… er… he hasn't a clue.

-

Nyx stops dead in her tracks "Well… hell…. uh…. okay…. spiders.. robot spiders… and .. some sort of .. device… um…. crap.. Bobby?" she asks cause well he is more experienced than her "Do I blast this thing or do we try to talk or what…." part of her wants to rip it to tiny little bits and assimiliate anything useful from the strange technologies. She isn't really aware of that part mind you.

-

The green beams fix on Nyx, growing brighter as they 'stare'. The the 'spiders' start to crawl up the sewer walls…the floor…the ceiling. They move quickly. Darting back and forth as they advance. And then, almost as one, long, thin needles emerge from their front. Needles that drip with some unknown liquid. Venom?

Wanda starts speaking under her breath. Louder now. The words strange in tone and sound. No language that is known to her companions at least. The glow around her hands grows brighter, waiting to be unleashed at a moment's notice.

The claws of the giant mechanical beast begin to extend, opening up as they approach Nyx.

-

Bobby takes in the whole thing in the matter of a moment. "Talking later." It's a snap decision. This thing looks dangerous and if it should happen to survive the fight that Bobby is about to start… well, he'll apologise then.

The temperature in the air starts to drop, sharply. Then, rather all of a sudden, ice forms on those claws, crawling up the metalwork and building in the center. Chomp on that for a while, Brassy.

"Get it Nyx!"

-

Crap. "Right… blasting…" she sets her footing and lifts both arms. White energy starts to surge and coil around her forearms and fists as she aims at the approaching spiders and the bigger beast. Her arms under the bright glare seem to reconfigure a bit, but its so hard to say. "Bobby… if it looks like I am bringing the whole tunnel down.. save us okay…" she then volleys weaponized particle beams down the tunnel BZZZOT at the main beast. She seems ready to punt any spider that gets by her foot too, super strength punt that is, as she mostly focuses on blasting the chilled mechanical beast.

-

It looks Wanda has to clean up then. She has no idea how strong either of her companions are, or more importantly, how strong she is, but she lets loose a barrage of raw energy herself. Her targets are the little spiders. The nasty looking creatures vaporising when consumed with the scarlet energy. Her eyes narrow. Strange words pouring from her mouth. And then she starts giggling.

The giant claws start to grind to a halt as ice forms over them, locked in the open position. The green beams turn blue and slam against Nyx's body, trying to knock her down. Inside the sphere the sound of gears groaning and pistons pumping builds and build. Little spiders fly through the air towards Bobby and Wanda. The sharp needles glistening.

-

"Ohcrap!" Bobby ducks, yanking Nyx down with him and throws a hand out, forming a hemispherical wall of ice four inches thick in front of them at waist height. Croughed down it should angle and deflect the incoming projectiles. It takes him a moment to realize that they're more spiders.

"Damnit. Nyx, keep on the big one. I'll help Wanda handle the smaller ones."

He stands and sends out a pulse of cold in front of him. Cold metal turns brittle. Make it cold enough and any amount of force, say, torsion in gears, will shatter it to pieces.

-

Green Beam to Blue Beam "Crap…." she gets nailed and slides a bit, not knocked down she is …. durable.. though Nyx just lost another hoodie. "I am Bobby … the thing is really… really durable." like her really. She straightens and continues to blast the Big One. Now though she really unloads on it, no mo nice Nyx. Her blasts are… very potent at the upper end of her capabilities. Like one shot could knock the treads off an Abhrams Tank. A sustained volley could melt a major bank vault door to slag. The difficulty here is she is very afraid of missing and blowing a hole into the world above or collapsing the tunnel so she is trying to be careful. It is questionable if Bobby has seen these full strength blasts.

-

The giant sphere buckles as Nyx's beam blasts into it. Two legs shear off immediately and it lists to the right, almost wedging itself into the tunnel. The other legs starting to push it backwards now and they don't care how much damage they do to the walls. Bricks start to fall from the arch of the ceiling. Mortar crumbling into dust.

The icy blast of Bobby also has an effect. Machinery starts to whine in protest at the resistance caused by the cold. The metal contracting, screaching, twisting. Spiders slam into the ice wall, lodging into it with their impaling needles. Some crack open immediately to show off an interior of clockwork and patterened brass. Others explode, melting the ice slightly in some kind of suicidal attempt to break through the barrier.

Wanda continues to blast away at the spiders, wandering nonchalantly towards the others. "Are we being heroes?" she asks the pair.

-

It's claustrophobic, uncomfortable, the particle blasts are making the enclosed space hot desipite Bobby chilling the metal in front of them and now it looks like the tunnel might collapse in on them taking the street with it. Yep. They're being heroes. Only heroics make you this worried, sweaty and uncomfortable at the same time.

Bobby throws both hands upward, shoring up the structure of the tunnel with glacial ice, filling it in as the machine scuttles back. First, make it stop, then ask questions about why it's here.

"Yep! That looks like about the size of it Wanda."

-

Something about this makes Nyx start laughing. "Hero time!" she squints at the scrambling in the dust and the mix of steam from her blasts and the frost in the air from Bobby's ice. "I…. there" she slides her particle beams to the right and sheers off another set of the legs, trying to prevent it from escaping. Not really worried about the little spiders because Wanda and Bobby will get them right. She moves forward blasting the sphere once good. "Woah there turbo" crunching at least one spider underfoot.

-

The tunnel is filling with smoke and steam as heat and ice mix in the narrow confines. Not to mention the bubbling sewerage that is adding a spicy aroma to the mix. The giant sphere shudders and then collapses to the ground, the remaining legs unable to support it. It hisses and wheezes before there is a clang of an unseen hatch opening and then the splash of footfall through the river of waste. The sphere itself blocking the sight of the trio…but it is also helping keep the ceiling up. Which is why the new sound of ticking within the metal should be a cause of concern.

The spiders, what is left of them, continue their attack under a barrage of energy and ice. Their simple clockwork mechanisms not up to dodging such an attack. One by one they burn, crack or explode until they are a collection of broken and melted pieces of an indeterminate nature.

Wanda looks up at the cracking ceiling above them and laughs loudly before suddenly going silent and pouting. "This is not supposed to happen" she explains to no one and everyone. The walls start to crack, damaged by the movement of the giant beast, and then a huge wooden pole falls through the cracking brick and gets wedged under the breaking ceiling. Wanda tilts her head. "It is okay now."

-

Bombs. Explosives…

From a certain perspective, explosives are just devices that release energy into the environment in a rapid uncontrolled fashion. Finding a way to survive an explosion is mostly a question of avoiding or containing the energy.

Meet water. Water has an incredibly high specific heat and radiation cross section: Translated to laymans terms, it can absorb a lot of energy, and going through phase changes from solid to liquid or liquid to gas absorbs even more. It's also relatively incompressible and heavy, which is why things like bullets and cars don't tend to get far when they hit them.

"Nyx! Punch a hole in the outer casing and stand back!" If she can, well, strike that, when she does, Bobby pours on the cold. Ice begins to fill up every crack and crevice of that sphere and beyond, coating it and then layering on inch after inch. "Take cover you two…" Bobby grits as he adds all the frozen water he can. Oh good lord he hopes whatever's in there isn't nuclear.

-

Nyx squints "Is that thing ticking…" then when Bobby says punch a hole, well she brings both her glowing hangs together and focuses a lancing beam of energy to give him the hole through the outer shell he requested. Only to watch the thing fill up with ice. "Huh…. oh hey…" she reaches out to grab Wanda and drag her down below the ice wall from earlier now. "How long do you think until it…."

BOOM!!! Though it is more of a gurgle and a wet squib than a dynamic roar that brings down the entire tunnel. Wanda was happily watching the pretty lights and icy water until she was dragged down by an anxious Nyx. She gives her a curious look before standing again after the big let-down. "Did we win?" she asks the other two, her eyes bright and expression hopeful that 'yes' is the answer.

-

Bobby sags against the wall after the bomb goes off with just as little fanfare as he'd hoped. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone, sending a text off to DCI asking Simon to contact the authorities and the… utilities companies. "That was close…" He breathes. "Someone was in that thing Nyx… and they got away. Not sure if we can do anything about that one right now… but yeah Wanda… we won." He thinks.

-

Nyx grins at Bobby "Go Team!" then she kicks a spider and crouches to pick up another one looking the broken automoton over "So yeah Bobby Wanda… Wanda Bobby."

-

"Okay" Wanda nods to the others before turning on her heels and starting off for back to the manhole. Still sloshing her way through the dirty water and acquiring a new scent to help keep strangers…and acquaintances…away.

Most of the spiders are destroyed. Those that are not are so damaged as to make their contents hard to discern. Though it is notable there is nothing resembling a motherboard in them. No silicon chips. Just lots of springs and gears.

-

"Take a few Nyx. Ask Sho to ask around about them next time you see him. I'll take 'em back to the lab and- er, where's Wanda going?" Bobby looks after her fr a moment and then moves to follow. Should she be left alone?

-

Nyx picks up a couple more "She… is unpredictable, trouble magnet, but seems to be hero material. I think she may be a mutant." queue Bobby. She trots along after them both, planning to get out of here and go get a shower really.
