The coffee shop is small, but has a warm, pleasant feel to it. It was busy about ten minutes ago, but now it's mostly empty, and the two kids behind the counter are mostly staring at the figure that arrived ten minutes prior. He's not doing anything particularly interesting, just sitting with a coffee, but due to that he's lighting up the whole shop with glowing golden wings… it's not like he's a wallflower.

"I don't know, maybe, you should just ask," one of the kids at the counter mutters at the other's question, and the other shrugs, pretending to be interested in cleaning the counter. Joel's quiet, looking out the window. He'd gotten in touch with Zatanna, to ask a few questions, but she suggested meeting here: and so, here he is, trying to not look awkwardly aware of being stared at.

***

Zee has contacted another friend she knows hangs out in New York and him to join her. She thinks that Joel would benefit from meeting her base of friends and Bobby, in her books, is good people.

Zee is just now walking into said Coffee Shop and hears the conversation at the counter and sighs before heading to where Joel is sitting. "Hi Joel. Thanks for meeting me here, it's close to the other appointments I had." Casting a look at the kids at the counter, with her stage smile, she sits down. "I've aske a friend to join us today, I hope that's ok."

***

Bobby is a cool dude. Most of the time. Today he's running a little late. Still cool, not because he's late but because he's arriving via ice ramp. Which he tries not to do but today traffic was just awful. He steps inside that coffee shop and waves to Zee and her companion. "Hey there."

***

Well, Joel was prepared for her arrival — watching out the window was helping with that one— and he immediately grins and tosses a quick easy wave to Zatanna as she sits down, gesturing to the chair at his table. His glow fluxes a little when she came in: he literally brightened up a few notches. "A friend? ….Sure, but—- is she magical?" Joel asks, with an immediate worry that climbs into his eyes and features. But then Bobby arrives, and Joel adapts. "Oh! Hello," he says, and starts pulling his chair aside to make room.

***

Zee grins at Joels brightening "I take it you're pleased to see me?" and then Bobby is there "Not a she… Bobby." Waving to the cool Bobby, Zee smiles some more "I thought you might like to meet some people other than the magical types…. I've ummm got a number of contacts into different groups. And I've worked with Bobby before."

***

"She has that. And I'm cool Bobby. There's a warmer one around somewhere but he was busy showing off his… something or other. Showing off is kind of in his job description." The ice nerd sticks a hand out. "What's your name again there?"

***

Joel tilts his head with some confusion at Zee's comment about being pleased. He probably isn't aware that he brightened up, but doesn't linger on questioning what she's talking about: he moves on. "Cool? Even better. I'm happy to meet anybody that wants to meet /me/," Joel says, in a kind of bashful tone that's common to physical mutants: used to rejection. "And hope my 'glowing personality' doesn't get overshadowed by my skin," he adds, with an optimistic half-grin: making light of something that's probably a negative most of the time.

"Joel; have a seat?" Joel's hand is slightly warm to Bobby's slightly cool offered one, so maybe together it's a 'normal' handshake.

***

Zee gestures to the kids at the counter "Would you like to take our order?" She's used to people staring and just flashes them her biggest smile before turning her attention to the two men "Anyway Joel, given the effect you seem to have on magic when people are close to you, I thought Bobby here might be someone to meet." Zee demonstrates for Bobby how her magic is impeded… "It's like he's sucking the magic, not from me… but the air."

As they're talking one of the kids comes over to take their order. Zee orders a coffee and waits for Bobby and Joel to order.

***

"Must be a magical version of what my girlfriend does." Bobby murmurs, looking curiously at Joel and his 'wings'. "Er, that wasn't just a joke. Nancy dampens mutant powers around her. She had to learn to control it. It's her own especial mutant ability. Anyway, You must be new in town. I don't keep up on everything but a guy with wings probably gets a lot of attention real fast right?"

Bobby turns briefly to order a mocha latte.

***

Joel takes the curious looks in stride, but blinks at Zee's openness about his magic 'suction' with a similar reaction to someone that isn't used to having private things aired immediately. "Yeah, magic doesn't work well around me, I can only make it 'worse', not 'control' it," Joel says, in kind of a small, dismayed voice. "I'm new, yes, but I'm not _trying_ to attract a lot of attention. I'm just wanting to get by…. trying to work out …deals with the local hospitals and shelters; I'd rather be known as a healer, not a glowing freak with wings…." Joel's rambling a little bit, which is an attempt to pull the conversation away from something he's sensitive about: the magic suppression. He coughs and gets a refill on what he'd already had.

***

Zee smiles softly "Bobby's good people, it's ok. But I haven't told him anything, just asked him to meet us. Why don't you tell us your story, or the bits you're comfortable sharing?" To Bobby, Zee shrugs "I met Joel the other day, there were demons" because that happens everyday, right? "and Illyana and Jericho were there. We didn't really get much chance to talk though."

***

"Ah." Demons. Bobby's only used to demons where Illyana is concerned. He's aware that there are, in theory, other places with demons as well but quite happy to have never encountered them. "Sure, whatever you feel comfortable saying is fine by me."

***

Joel isn't on the spot or anything with that statement. He blushes, and his glowing starts to get a little bit obnoxious. Part of it is it backlights him pretty heavily, which makes him uncomfortable to look at directly, for most people. It effectively does shield his expression, do to that. "Oh. Well. I don't know where I'm going or what I'm doing. I saw the demons, and, well, I do know that I burn dark magic up like paper, so… I tried to help. I wasn't needed… the others killed the summoners really, uh, effectively. I found one that was dying but it was too late to help him, to even give him a chance to change his dark path. …if going around killing people is common here, I don't know: I suppose I don't fit in as a 'hero' either." He lifts his hands in a helpless gesture, and then folds them together.

***

"You were helpful." Zee is sure on that point and she squints as she tries to look at Joel "Most of our work is team work, each doing a little bit. I was able to use the light you created. I" she coughs a little "still have trouble creating something from nothing, so the assist was a good one."

The servers return with their drinks and Zee lapses to silence whilst the cups are placed on the table.

***

"Having somone that squishes Dark Magic is probably real helpful in a lot of situations. It does seem to be floating around." Bobby notes. "Though… might need to be careful around some people. Some of them are helpful." He knows one or two. Er, okay maybe just the one now that he thinks about it. "Anyway, thanks for helping out. I heard about that mess down in M-Town. I live there, sometimes.'

***

The light emission is blatantly shifting with Joel's moods. It's particularly obvious as he blinks at Zee's comment about his light creation, and releases a deep, warm laugh. The light spikes and then drops much lower than it was before, as the emotional lift hits, and then Joel clearly relaxes, and his emission drops quite a bit. "I have all the light you could possibly ever want, Zee; help yourself," Joel says with an easy chuckle. He nods a little bit towards Bobby, but seems more thoughtful than anything else. "It's all magic, I think, but particularly dark. Anyway, I want to help. I don't really know how to… except to figure out how to control my curse better, I think." Using 'curse' instead of 'powers' probably speaks volumes about Joel's outlook on his glowworm thing. "Honestly I didn't really pay much attention to the magic-eating part until the other day. Usually the problem is the burning if my light gets out of control."

***

Zee nods as she sits her coffee "If we work together again, I will most certainly help myself then." she smiles "Connect with the right people and you'll soon work out how best to help. Your healing ability, I guess it's healing yeah, could be quite helpful in some of the scrapes I've been too."

***

"You could always talk to Angelo down at the Avenue C clinic. He does some odd metahuman healing. Also medical research. And I know hospitals would probably be happy to have you on staff. Some of them are starting to wise up to the benefits of that kind of thing." A minority, but a few big ones are involved. Bobby shrugs. "Either way I'm sure you'llwokr it out."

***

"Well, I have a cell phone. So if you need healing and light …. well, I'm not a fast flier, but I'll do what I can?" Joel suggests. "Avenue C, got it. Sure. I figure if I keep trying, eventually I'll prove I can be of use. And more importantly, save some lives," Joel adds. "Perhaps get a few more people to relax about metahumans in the process," he says, with a slight lift and motion of his golden, transparent light-wings. Should either of the others show interest, he'll share his contact information. "But for now I know I'm probably too… unstable to help in a demon-fight much. But I guess practice also is what is needed…? I don't know." Joel gives up on trying to figure it out, and enjoys his drink.

***

Zee takes the contact information… she likes Joel and will help out if she can. "I work with the Titans mainly. They're a good team and I'm sure they'ld like to meet you too." Taking a sip of her coffee, Zee considers "Practice and really, just being prepared to get into it, that's what helps." She laughs a little "You should see some of the scrapes I got myself into… still do… but each time, I'm a little bit better."

***

"We all do. I'm with X-Red right now. Public face Mutants Doing the Right Thing." Bobby grins. "For a profit, that is. Berto has a business to run. You could consider yourself invited to stop by there too if you like. It might be educational. ertiainly it cant hurt to make more friends."

***

"oh. Wow. I didn't know you were parts of those… groups," Joel says, feeling foolish for not being more aware. Then again, he's had enough to deal with, just staying alive and fed. "Uh, ah, maybe," Joel says, a bit shy at Bobby's invitation. "I'm pretty non-profit, except for trying to eat," the winged guy smiles. "But I think I'm a mutant. So. Sure, maybe educational," Joel aggress, positive.

***

"You should totally talk to them, Joel" Zee nods with a smile "They'll tell you how the profit thing works. Titans are pretty public, trying to put a good spin on the crimefighting angle. We're funded differently" She shrugs "I don't know much about it… I'm ummm funded separately you could say, with my shows and the family stuff. If you like, though, I'll organise for you to meet Keith as well." Looking to Bobby and then back at Joel "More options and information can't hurt… help you work out where you /want/ to belong."

***

"Finding where you do belong can be kind of a process." Bobby grins. "Just remember that there are those of us out there that don't care who you work for so longas you're doing good. And doing well." He can think of a few groups that'd love Joel's talents but the question is what the young man is comfortable with… and how quickly things are going to get harsh for him. The city tends to, these days.

***

"I'm pretty…. flattered that you feel I belong with any of you at /all/," Joel says, honestly, with a soft smile and laugh. "So.. thanks at least for that much, no matter what," Joel says, appreciatively. He's a little jittery, which is probably easily blamed on his coffee intake. "I hope my motives are in the right place to do 'good,' but I'm not sure I have control of doing it 'well'," Joel chuckles at Bobby. "I'll think about it all. Thanks for the advice."

***

Zee cocks her "Everyone deserves a place… and I found my home in the Titans." The young woman shrugs as she drinks her coffee "Just do your best to do your best, that's all any of my team members ask of me." She thinks on that "In fact… it's all anyone I've worked with lately asks… As Bobby says, it's a bit of a process."

***

"Very much so. And again, feel free to stop by the DaCosta building any time. Though speaking of I have some centrifuges I have to check. It was nice meeting you Joel, and Zee it's always a pleasure. See you both soon?"

***

"Sure," Joel says, climbing towards his feet, and immediately offering a handshake again. "Thanks for taking time, Bobby," Joel adds, "And same to you, Zee. It's really nice to start to meet some of the community here."
