Rowan is coming home. It's still midday but he'd promised a certain someone a small adventure and means to make good. Dragon flights, he understands, are nice, and they can get you places you might not be able to go otherwise. Like, perhaps out over the ocean and south to in a nice, easy flight along the coast. High enough that they won't be bothered and low enough to see the sighs. Sounds like a good time? Rowan hopes itdoes.

***

Babs knows that Rowan has promised an adventure, if she can get to New York… but she's got no idea what he has planned. Babs has been able to get herself to New York and being Babs, she has dressed sensibly and is currently waiting on the pathway near the beach, just outside Rowans apartment.

***

The Dragon Warrior smiles as he approaches and leans down to give Babs a hug. "There you are. Are you ready for a trip. I thought we might fly today." He's already opening the door now so she can stow her chair in his apartment. Wouldn't do for that to get left outside.

***

Babs returns the hug and turns as he opens the door "Another flight?" she smiles at the Blue and nods "I think I might like that." Following him so they can store her chair, the smile doesn't drop "Is there any special reason?"

***

"No. I just thought the weather was supposed to be nice today and we could fly over the ocean, out along the coast. It's pretty and there's a lot to see." The Blue easily hoists Babs out of her chair and after a moment, onto his shoudlers, which is helpful when they clear his apartment again and he starts to transform. Moments later they're skybound and flying south.

***

Babs doesn't protest as she's lifted and hoisted onto Rowans back. There are far too many rewards in the flight to complain and… it's Rowan. "Well then, I look foward to seeing what you have to show me, Rowan…" Babs settles onto his back as he transforms and holds on, smiling broadly.

***

Rowan pulls up to altitude and soars, slowly gliding over the landscape, letting it roll away beneath them. There's Massachusets, and Connecticut and Rhode Island as they go. "There we go. Nice and quiet up here too." He murmurs.

***

"So it is." Babs has been watching the landscape as they fly, thoroughly enjoying herself and the view. Craning her neck to see over his, she murmurs as she watches "Do you miss the quiet, Rowan?"

***

"I do, sometimes. The sea, the deep parts of it are quiet. And down in the cities… well, there's always something going on there." He says quietly as they soar through a cloud to emerge on the other side. "And you?"

***

"It's hard to miss the quiet, Rowan, when you grew up in the city." Babs smiles as the cloud surrounds, lifting a hand to try and grab it as they go through. "But, you've been in my place, it is peaceful and quiet. I tend to like my solitude, except for certain people."

***

"I've noticed that. And…" Some of them don't come by as much anymore. Which is why Rowan tries to be by as much as he can. "And it can get a bit… too quiet up there sometimes, if I don't miss my guess." He banks and turns inland, flying over rolling hills now. "How have you been?"

***

"Not lately" Babs murmurs and sighs. "Only sometimes. I miss Tim, since he took his extended vacation. He and you, were my most regular and favourite visitors. I'm glad you keep visiting." The redhead smiles a little sadly. "I didn't tell you, because I didn't want to worry you…" Babs blows out a breath "The tower was attacked recently. You weren't available, or you would have got called but I had people come to help. And…. I'm o.k. I didn't sustain any real injuries." Mainly because a certain Druid had offered healing.

***

Rowan does look worried for a moment but this would have to do with Babs secrets and so long as she's not telling him she needs protection… well, she'd do that if she needed it right? "I hope that they're dealt with? Let me know if there's anything…" Cause he'll do anything that she needs. Well, anything he can.

***

Babs has no idea if she needs protection or not. If it is Yakuzi, then possibly but she'll know soon enough. "No, they aren't Rowan. We don't know why I was targetted and I'm digging now. I ….. " Babs closes her eyes and shakes her head "I may need help. And I'll tell you when and if I do… hopefully before I need it."

***

"Alright." He can ask nothing more, after all. "So long as you're safe Babs. That's all I care about." Rowans six wings flap a bit more as he moves around another cloud and dives a little. "everything okay other than that/"

***

"Rowan…" Babs starts and then stops "I've been told that I'm not safe… but until I know more, I don't know why or how to protect myself. And" she pauses again and smiles slightly "It's nice to know that you care." The dive gets a small 'whoop' out of the redhead and she tries to catch the cloud again "Mostly well. That information you gave me on the SRD was helpful… I've received information that it's being investigated."

***

"That's also good…" Rowan thinks quietly for a few moments. "I do care Babs. I wish… I could just stick around to make sure nothing happens but…" He suspects that may conflict with her keeping her sccrets. "I trust you though. To let me know if I can ehlp."

***

"But what, Rowan?" Babs prompts the Blue to finish his thought for a change. "I know you trust me… and I think I would like you to stick around too." She smiles slightly, not that she really needs the protection but the company… that would be nice.

***

"But you seem to need privacy at certain times." The Dragon Warrior clarifies. "And I don't want to intrude. it seems important to you."

***

She does… when she gets certain visitors and when she has to rush to the monitoring room to support her team. "I do… and you've never pushed it either." Babs sighs "I'm sure I can work something out, I think I'ld like you around more often." For a woman who likes her privacy, that might be a big concession.

***

"Then I'd like to be around more often." The dragon rumbles happily. She lives in a very differernt world, but if he can be part of it he will. Rowan takes them lower for a better view of the landscape.

***

Babs hears the happy rumble more than feels it and smiles to herself. "Do that…" it's an invite "When do you present yourself at the Atlantean court to announce you'll participate in the Orca races?" The redhead watches as he drops them lower, trying to make out landmarks as they soar.

***

"Mmmmm. A few days. Which will be a day trip, I do believe." Atlantis isn't close but Rowan can swim at speed for long distances. It won't take him that long to get there and back The formalities of Court might take a bit longer though.

***

Babs smiles again "I would be surprised if it was only a day trip." Looking down over his shoulder, she leans a little "I don't know Atlantean custom, but it seemed that it was a bit of a thing when Mera spoke about it." Pointing to the ground, Babs identifies a small beach "Can we land then for a bit, Rowan? It looks very pretty."

***

"Of course we can." Rowan circles down toward the desserted beach. SPeaking of day trips, this one is jst getting started.

***

As Rowan circles lower, Babs lets out another small 'whoop'. Seems like she might be enjoying this riding Dragonback. "We should have thought to bring a picnic with, Rowan." the redhead is smiling "It's such a lovely day for it."

***

"Well… do you like Fish?" Rowan's certainly well versed enough with the art of cooking fish that he can catch, clean and cook one in simple ways over a fire. Anything more than that might be a bit much.

***

Babs smiles in a bemused way "Generally… I guess these will be really fresh too" She shrugs as he circles "That sounds great actually" The redhead does like fish, and this will be a bit of a treat. "But only if you let me help."

***

"Alright." He can think of several ways she can help. "Get comfortable… here let me… just set you up." Babs is set down and Rowan makes sure she's warm enough and settled enough and starts a nice bonfire before he takes off into the surf. He's only gone about twenty minutes though before returning with some fresh scallops (perfect for roasting) and a couple of nice cod.

He sits down near her and breaks out a couple of knives as he begins begins to prep the fish. Fish cleaning will have to take place away from Babs. Too many gulls. "Help me get the scallops ready?"

***

Babs is no stranger to using a knife, just not for the cleaning and preparation of shellfish in general. Taking the knife from Rowan and the collected the scallops, Babs nods "I can, just tell me how you prefer they be done." She is comfortable and warm and watches as Rowan begins his prep.

***

It takes a few minutes more for all the guts to exit the fish. But then Rowan's back, sitting down near Babs and leaning on her a bit as he debones the creature. "You look like you've done that before." He says with a smile. Babs would be practical.

***

Rowan can lean on Babs, but whilst she's wielding the knife to prepar shell fish she'll not return the favour. "You might say that" she murmurs. Rowan isn't aware of just how trained the redhead actually is. His own technique gets an appreciative nod "As have you, I can see."

***

"I wasn't at first. We usually eat them raw and whole underwater. Hard to… cook anything with heat there." The blue smiles. "But after I started doing surface operations I learned. Quickly."

***

Babs works with concise movements to prepare the scallops, putting them in a pile on the edge of her coat. "Really? Heat didn't work underwater? Fancy that…" she smiles widely and nods to her work "Is that what you wanted?"

***

"Wonderful." Rowan smiles and sets to cooking both those and the fish. The fish is wrapped in something that the blue produces from his belt that looks a lot like plastic wrap but isn't. The scallops are set close to the fire to cook using their own shells as serving devices.

***

Babs sits and watches Rowan work. "What is that you're using?" she nods to the plastic wrap stuff and tilts her head questioningly. The way the food is laid out in the fire makes perfect sense and she's content to wait, leaning back against the log he's found for them.

***

"Something we used to use to keep food clean while it cooked. A sort of flexible nanopolymer. Just you know, a useful toy from home." Rowan shrugs and leans back against the log while the fire does it's magic. He puts an arm around her shoulders.

***

"Really? Back home, you mean your earth?" Babs leans against Rowan as he puts his arm around her, letting her her head rest on his shoulder. Watching the fire is strangely restful.

***

"Just so." Rowan nods. "I don't know if the Blue use it here… though I was thinking that perhaps I might go find out. The pacfic is rumored to be the home of my people here so… at some point I should take a trip out there and see if I can make contact. Try to learn." He shrugs. "Not now though. Too many things happening here."

***

"I do admit to be a little surprised" Babs nods slowly "That you haven't already… but each thing in it's own time" Tilting her head up on his shoulder so she can see Rowan, Babs watches for a few minutes before continuing "What's happening now that wouldn't let you go?" Certainly the races, but she's not sure what else Rowan is involved in apart from his work.

***

"Things here in this ocean. Namor is up to something and I don't know what, but Arthur or Mera need help containing him I want to be available." The dragon warrior smiles a bit. "And there's you. I do enjoy our visits. A lot. And you asked me to be around more. The Blue aren't going anywhere. I want you to be safe."

***

Funny how things have a way of rebounding on you, Babs should remember this. "I'm glad you enjoy our visits and…" Babs smiles softly as she looks at Rowan "I would like you around more… but family, Rowan. You might find your family." She's seen how Tim, Dick, Charlie even Bruce handle the lack of family. "Stay if you want, I would like that, but don't stay because of me."

***

"Even if I did… they're not really my family. They belong to some other Rowan if this world even has one. They're… strangers that look like people I know. It's… not easy for me, but it's not fair to them to expect them to accept that either."

***

"Well that's true enough…" Babs looks up at Rowan, her green eyes serious and assessing "And I can't imagine how /not/ easy this is for you." Babs lets out a soft sigh and falls silent. What does one say to a man who's lost basically everything?

***

Rowan squeezes Babs a bit tighter. "So there's no real hurry. All the family I have left is right here." He murmurs reaching over to poke the fish. Not quite done yet it seems.

***

Babs leans in closer as Rowan squeezes again and watches as he pokes the fish "Do you mean me, Arthur and Mera, or the fish you're currently preparing for my consumption?" She's not sure if it's just a bad sense of humour or poor taste, but the words are out before she can stop them.

***

Rowan chuckles. "Arthur and Mera are too scary to be family." Is all he as to say about that. Friends perhaps, but never family. Just… no.

***

That's actually a pretty serious thing for Babs. Babs who has effectively taken one Misfit under her wing and feels responsible for the Bratlings (look at Time Drake)… "You see me as family, Rowan?" the words are murmured and she tilts her head again to look up at him.

***

"I do." Rowan says quietly. "I really do. I'd do anything to protect you. But I think you know that." Well anything but violate her trust. If she wants to be left to her allies or other devices, he'll respect that and her secrets. Still.

***

"I do know you'd do anything to protect me Rowan" and it might be time Babs did some training with him…. but the redhead falls silent as she stops to think for a few moments. "Just how close do you feel for me, Rowan?"

***

Rowan cants his head, trying to make sure that he understands the question because he gets the feeling that it's an important one. "How close? Very. You're one of the few reasons this world isn't a lonely hell for me. And you're kind, and clever, and brave and…" He looks down and smiles, blushing a bit. "Also very good looking, if you don't mind my saying so." He looks back up. "And you helped me when you had no reason to."

***

Babs flushes slightly "I don't mind you saying, but … I just don't see myself that way." Taking a deep breath, this is not a comfortable conversation "Do you see me as a sister, or something like that, Rowan?" The redhead looks back to ther fire as well "You needed the help, I could give it… it's…. what …. friends do."

***

Rowan pulls the fish out to look. About done. And the scallops… yep. They're ready. He produces some forks from his belt. Came prepared, he did. "No, not a sister." The blue cants his head. "Definitely not that."

***

Well that's a good thing really, because that might have been awkward for Babs. Taking one of the forks from Rowan, the red head shakes her head in mild amusement "Anyone would think you'd planned this…. " she's glad if he did. "I'm glad you don't see me as a sister, Rowan. That might have been very awkward."

***

"Planned the discussion?" Rowan's not that subtle or clever. The flight yes. He offers Babs some fish and scallops. "Do you think of me as… more than a brother, perhaps?" THat's the only way Rowan can see that it would be awkward.

***

Babs flushes again "No, planned the excursion… and perhaps the cookout." she indicates the forks and swallows, looking anywhere but Rowan before taking the offered food. The second question has her blushing now "Yes Rowan. I do."

***

"Oh, I just figured that we might get hungry." Rowan waves that one. Being prepared. The response draws a slow, sort of shy smile. "I'm… I'm very glad to hear that, Babs."

***

"Being prepared is a very good thing, Rowan" Babs watches the shy smile "Why is that?" The scallops and fish are delicious, as expected, and the redhead eats them slowly as she watches the Blue.

***

"Because it would have made things awkward for me." The Blue might, just possibly, be a bit sweet on Babs. Maybe. Just a little.

***

Babs has controlled her blushing and is rather enjoying the food as she looks at Rowan and smiles "Well that's probably a good thing then…." the red head most certainly more than likes the Dragon Warrior and she looks at him carefully, not sure really how to respond. Babs might be sweet on the Blue, but … anything more than familial bonds and she's all at sea (pardon the pun).

***

Rowan seems rather pleased both with the outcome of the meal and the conversation. "Well then shall we be more than familiarly fond of eachother together? And… I know we see eachother regularly but… might I perhaps request the pleasure of taking yoou on a formal date?"

***

Babs laughs softly at the request "Absolutely. A formal date then… I would like that." She's noted how pleased he seems with the day and that makes her happy. "Thank you, for yet another lovely outing, Rowan."

***

"My pleasure. Would you like to watch the waves a bit and look aorund some more, or do you need to get back?" Rowan can fly quite quick if need presses.

***

"As long as you keep that arm around me" Babs grins up to the Blue "I'm happy to stay and watch the waves for a while longer. I don't need to be back till close to Sundown." and Babs is happy to settle and watch until it's time for them to really go.

***

"I'm quite happy to do that." Maybe they'll stay here for hours. Maybe Rowan will fly south with her and they can explore other beaches, or hills, or little river valleys where no one goes. The only thing he cares about right now is that they do it together. There will be time enough for fighting later. This is what's really important in life.
