Jericho knows there's only so much he can do, even with his basic knowledge and rather extensive contacts. However he does know of someone who might be of a lot more service than he can be (at least directly) to May and SHIELD in general. Two people, actually, so he's sent out an e-mail nudge to both of them to please meet him in Bronx Park, along with contacting May herself to bring along whomever might be appropriate. Because this is important. People died last night.

In the Triskelion itself, an odd scene is unfolding. A large, black skeleton in very ornate chinese robes walks in the door with a jade lion dog and over to the receptionist. "I am King Quinguang and I have a list of petitions and grievances to present." He opens the scroll he's carrying… which rolls to his feet… and past the desk… and toward the elevator…

-

Sara's job lately has been as much about SHIELD as it's been about NYPD. Enough that her captain is pretty much done with asking what she's doing. One of these days they're going to give up and just name her a SHIELD liaison or something. For now, though, she's doing her best to cover what she can. Which means meeting Trent and company at the park. "You send the creepiest emails, Trent," she says as she walks up.

-

It hadn't taken long for Doctor Fitz to contact Melinda May following their meeting with Director Fury. It would seem that the young scientist's loyalty lies even deeper than to defend her in front of the Director; what he's about to do is straight up against the rules. Simmons would chastise him. Hard.

Regardless, that's why he's here, stepping out of an unmarked SHIELD cat with civilian license plates. To ward off the cold, he's wearing a trench coat, hat, gloves, and scarf over the typical tie-and-cardigan combination. Snow falls all around: they say a particularly vicious blizzard is coming in. He walks toward the meeting point, looking first and foremost for May.

-

Hellboy is easy to contact. Not only is the BPRD a listed agency with official contact with SHIELD, but he has an actual phone with an actual number that is printed on actual business cards. Granted, the number actually connects to a handler — he has a tendency to break phones in frustration after a few minutes of trying to get the the mouth part to line up with his mouth and the ear part to line up with his ear at the same time. But it's a simple matter for SHIELD or Jericho to call him in for a consult. If the consult sounds interesting enough, he may even show up on time: which is why he's already at the location, waiting for the others on a park bench and smoking a truly rank cigar.

-

Administrative leave. Damned ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. May is stalking through this park fuming as she goes, which is honestly very much unlike her. But, she's so busy ranting inside her own mind and concocting exactly how she was going to make Hill pay for leaving her to deal with the Triskelion attack and then with Fury that she fails to notice Fitz arrive in the black car. She doesn't even take the time to register anyone else in the area as she essentially beelines toward where Trent told her to meet.

-

Jericho is also waiting not too far from there and falls in line with Sara. "Sorry. I can never tell if someone's reading your e-mails and I don't want to get you in more hot water than I already am." The hacker genuinely likes the detective and he's aware that he has a history of being trouble. Or at least, a sign that trouble is afoot.

"Ah, and there's tall, red and smokey now. Have you met Hellboy?" Jericho waves. The two haven't always seen eye to eye but this sort of trumps everything. "Sara, Hellboy. Hellboy, Sara. Now all we need is Agent May and, ah there she is." He turns sweeps those odd amber eyes about… "And Fitz. That's his name right?"

-

Back at the Tri, having been hurridly passed on from the receptionist, a tall black skeleton in ornate chinese robes walks into the office of one of the field operations specialists with a jade liondog. They've been getting looks but no one's shot at them in at least… five minutes. "Hello. My name is King Qinguang and I have a list of petitions and greviences to present." The scroll unfolds and goes out the door… and down the hall… and down the stairs…

-

"I've heard the name. I think you met with my partner," Sara nods toward Hellboy, grimacing as the Witchblade makes it feelings on demons known. The whole gauntlet is a little bit awkward for standing in the park, but it's going to take a minute to get that down to anything smaller. "What's up?" she asks Trent, marking the other arrivals with a slight nod.

-

As he draws closer, it becomes apparent that Fitz was injured during the Triskelion attack. The left side of his face is bruised up, and a medical patch is worn over his left eye. He's removed the sling from his right arm, though he favors it as if it were in pain.

Catching sight of May, he decidedly doesn't move to greet her. She looks to be a few levels beyond 'pissed off'. Instead, Hellboy and his cigar make for a plentiful distraction, though the odor coming from the stick is ripe enough to curl his face. "Bloody hell, what's in that thing?" he blurts out.

Sara is the more recognizable face. To her, the young Scott waggles his left hand an smiles, before shooting a look Trent's way. "Doctor Fitz," he corrects. "Or, just Fitz."

-

"Hey," Hellboy greets them all with a fragrant wave of his cigar hand. Loquacious as ever. He's got one arm draped over the back of the park bench, which is the kind with a separate seat and back. This is fortunate, as the gap between them is just the right size for a thick, bright red tail. Sara gets a nod of confirmation at the mention of her partner; Fitz gets a long, puzzled look from the demon's yellow-orange eyes. Normally, on first meeting him, the cigar isn't the thing people comment on. Staring at the kid, the BPRD agent lifts his outsized stone hand and slowly pinches the ember out between his thumb and forefinger. "Sorry, Doctor," he rumbles, putting emphasis on the second word. It might be sarcasm, but with Hellboy's stony face, who can tell?

-

Melinda May comes to an abrupt stop about ten feet from the odd gathering, her eyes going from Trent to Pezzini to Fitz, lingering there for a moment, then to Hellboy and to Trent again. Like Fitz, she doesn't seem at all fazed by red skin, giant stone hand, and filed-down horns. She does look really very peeved, though. She stands there and stares at the group for a solid five seconds before finally approaching the rest of the way.

"He's your new contact," May says without so much as offering a greeting while pointing at Fitz. "I've been put on administrative leave."

-

Jericho winces at the news. Ow. That's got to hurt May personally and it is in his opinion a very bad move. "I see. Well you may want to sit on this anyway, May because I think long term SHIELD is going to need people like Sara and Hellboy here. Sara I know you've met. Hellboy is BPRD if you haven't." He nods to Fitz, likewise going with the introductions. "Doctor Fitz then. Sorry. I only saw you the one time in that facility… though I think you were also on the Greenland Assault mission right?" Virus mess, that. Nasty.

"What's happened is SHIELD was assaulted by HYDRA occultists last night. And it got bad. I've got some friends and friends of friends working on the magical angle, but SHIELD need mystical experts and paranormal defense yesterday and other then doing what I can to help Magik on that socre there's not much I can do except respond to attacks. I figure Sara and Hellboy here might be able to help in a more official capacity."

-

"I heard things got ugly," Sara grimaces, which only deepens at May's announcement. "Bit of a shitstorm, there. Not like it's your fault, right?" She reaches up to push a hand through her hair, only to stop herself when she's reminded that her hand is sort of occupied by Witchblade at the moment, turning a dry look on Hellboy. "I'm not a mage," she adds to Trent. "I don't cast spells, I don't set up wards, none of that. Mostly I'm just muscle when it comes to that. I might be able to do some of the investigation. Tracking."

-

Oh, Fitz certainly noticed Hellboy's strange appearance. After greeting the others, his head performs a nice, slow double take, back to the demon-man. "Oy, those are some mean pain meds," he murmurs, before smiling through the gawking. "Fitz is fine. Or, really, you can just call me 'Leo'. Either one is fine, really. It's certainly not my intent to make offense." Nervous chatter, check!

May's words draw him back down from the gawking. He has seen some strange things, so, it's not all that peculiar. No, being referred to in such a way is a stern reminder of the responsibility Director Fury had set in his lap.

"That's right," he answers Jericho. "We're also going to need help coming up with defenses against these, ah, 'occult' attacks." Points to Fitz, he managed to keep himself from wincing. It's entirely possible that he may be taking a step beyond merely accepting that magic and occultism are actual things, but let's not go so far as to say he's embracing them for what they are. He looks to Sara and Hellboy. "Unfortunately, we're not ready for this kind of thing, at all. I need to develop a team to get us ready, and it needs to happen, now." He finds himself surprised by the directness and urgency of his own words.

-

"Nazis," Hellboy growls. He normally keeps his tone hushed, because when he doesn't, he tends to sound like he does now: a cross between distant thunder and a hundred fleshless fists banging on the insides of coffin lids. "I HATE Nazis. Nazi wizards in particular," he adds. Anyone who gets past how scary he sounds is going to notice how personally he seems to be taking the HYDRA connection. Surely he can't be old enough to have a personal grudge against the Third Reich? "You need help with Nazi wizards, I'm your man."

-

Melinda May huffs faintly. "What that building needs right now is wards against that kind of thing happening again. Can you do that?" She looks at Hellboy squarely, not a hint of hesitation at his demeanor or trepidation at his appearance. Then with a blink her eyes focus on Trent. "Also, expect Lance Hunter to be on your ass. Maybe best if yoiu just tell him everything, get him to leave you alone faster."

-

"I've met Hunter…" Jericho frowns. Shortly before headed to Russia. "Everything?" That gets the hacker to quirk an eyebrow. "How about everything I can. Some things aren't mine to tell." And some things he won't share on account of the fact that they're very personal. Then again, Lance Hunter isn't exactly SHIELD's model soldier so he's fairly sure he can come to an understanding with the guy.

"Wards, if I understand it right, are an investment in power, and unless you're prepared to make real nice with some powerful mystics, wards on a building as big as the Tri might be hard. But I'll leave that to the experts."

Leo gets a nod, as does Sara. "Yeah I know you're not exactly a mage, Sara but you're a detective with more experiece in this than anyone else I know of with your talents. SHIELD needs someone that they don't have to look all squinty eyed at and frankly even if that were me you'd be better for the job of figuring out the who what where and why. I can go on field ops, poke places I'm not supposed to get, but I'm a hacker and a soldier, not a detective wielding the Balance." And if anyone needs something to balance the scales right now, it's SHIELD.

Hellboy's growl meets with a grin. He'd been kind of hoping this would be the case. "I'll let you work out the details with these guys then. I'm still going to be helping but you know, the Tri's never been my favorite place…" He usually only shows up when something's wrong.

About twenty feet away there's a flash of teleportation and a tall, black skeleton in ornate chinese robes appears with a bored looking Jade liondog. They both start walking toward May and the rest of the group.

-

"I'll second that," Sara grimaces at Hellboy's feelings on nazi mages. "And I appreciate what you're saying, Trent, but if SHIELD wants me to look into their breach, they know how to reach me," she points out, pulling out her phone to take a look in case she's missed a message. "SHIELD is the last place I'm going to go sticking my nose without a proper invitat-" She pauses, catching sight of the latest arrivals. "Okay, so, who invited big trouble in little China here?"

-

Wards. "Those are… spells, right? Defense spells?" Fitz smiles lamely. "I read Harry Potter." He also doesn't seem entirely put off by Hellboy's growling. You see, not more than an hour or so past, he witnessed Director Fury. That really explains it all. Plus, Melinda May is here, and the dude seems to be on their side. There is, in fact, a moment where he looks over to Hellboy and grins. Seems he's developed a bit of vengeance against the HYDRA goons. May might have understood why, had she looked at the contents of that folder.

Back to Jericho he looks. "There's one thing. A prototype that a colleague of mine was working on three years ago. Do you think…" Eyes go back to Sara and Hellboy. "Would it be possible to combine this magic stuff with technology? I'm already working on a few modifications to the design, but in theory, it could cover a building large enough as the Triskelion. It's just… well, there's a power source problem, and the device wasn't exactly designed to deal with, you know, this stuff." Just say it, Fitz. "Magic stuff."

Without missing a beat, the scientist takes a step backwards and looks at the skeleton in shock. "WOT THE HELL?" he blurts out, clearly startled.

-

Hellboy's underbite gets a little more pronounced when May suggests boring mystical housekeeping as the smart course of action. He's mostly annoyed because, yeah, she probably has a point. "I don't do wizard stuff, and I'm definitely not a tech guy," he answers the SHIELD agents. "I've got some useful relics, maybe, but nothing big enough for a building." The pouches all over his belt are there for a reason. He waggles one hand. "But I know some guys I can ask. More importantly, I can punch some guys. Beating up Nazi wizards is a specialty of mine. You know who they're—"

He cuts off when he spies a skeleton and a statue flash into being a short distance away. "Uh. These weren't Chinese Nazis, were they? Because that makes no sense."

-

Melinda May just shrugs at Fitz's question about wards. She's not any sort of magic user either, and it's a term she likely picked up from some place like a Harry Potter book. But then someone approaching starts drawing everyone's attention so she turns to see who it is and…

Yes, May is now openly gawking at the skeletal form approaching them. She recovers after a second or two and quickly composes herself, bringing her hands together and bowing as King Quinguang and his celestial escort walks closer. And she stays that way until the creature acknowledges her.

-

"Agent Melinda May." The skeleton says with a thick Chinese accent. "I am King Qinguang and I have come to present a list of petitions and grievances to you as the representative of SHIELD." The scroll in the creature's hands opens, the bottom drops to the floor and rolls away. And it keeps going… and going… and going. "In accordance with proper protocol, I shall now read the list. Item one…"

Jericho's eyes widen and he reaches back for his blade… but when May bows he stops. Clearly this is something she's familiar with? "Uh… well… I don't know." He tells the other three. "But given that some of the portals last night were opened to a hell realm, I think, maybe this has something to do with it?"

-

Sara steps back at the thing comes closer, though if May knows how to deal with it, she's going to let May deal with it. At least until it becomes a problem. A list of grievances against SHIELD by an ancient Chinese skeleton is…actually a new one for her.

-

Fitz is still visibly shaken, even when the creature directly addresses May. However, he's able to piece things together pretty quickly. May is on Administrative Leave, which means that he is technically the only representative from SHIELD here.

Goddamn it to bloody hell.

He looks toward May, nervously wondering if he's about to be thrown under the damn bus. Because he probably is.

-

"Oh, hell," the BPRD agent hisses. He has enough experience with bureaucracy-minded haunts to be terrified of what is about to happen, but well aware that there's not much he can do aside from blasting a barrel-sized hole in Qinguang to short-circuit the process. He pulls open his coat and rests his hand on the Samaritan's grip, just in case it comes to that, but allows May to try things her way before intervening.

-

Melinda May straightens again when the Chinese demon begins reciting the list of grievances. Ohhh crap. This is going to be a while. As the demon begins reciting, she tries to force her brain to remember the children's tales her grandmother told her about heaven and hell and the beings who resided there. Specifically, a way to shortcut past the reading of the grievances to get to the bureaucratic negotiations.

-

Annnnnnnd he's still going. "Item number Sixty Four, most grievous, the proper paperwork for the requistion of demons to be sent to Earth has not been filed and several have been lost near the area known as the Triskelion. This has caused significant demon-hour overages and underages in several departments of the various hells, resulting in unscheduled overtime for two million six hundred thousand demons and budget overruns in three of the courts of Diyu."

That get's Jericho's attention. "Wait, wait, wait. The paperwork wasn't filed? You mean HYDRA stole those demons?" That's interesting. And potentially leverageable. He looks over to Sara and Hellboy and May and Fitz… and then blanches. Oh dear. Some of those demons aren't coming back. Specifically the ones that got unmade…

-

Sara looks…bemused. They say the devil is in the details. And she's definitely referred to paperwork as hell. It's just…a little bit different to see it actually play out. In paperwork. "I got nothing," she shakes her head to Trent, still watching the whole process with bizarre fascination.

-

Incidentally, a chirping sound comes from Leopold's phone. You see, he's knit himself a very tight schedule, given the urgency of Director Fury's demands. Operation: Wand isn't going anywhere, and this skeleton creature has already taken too long. "I've got a meeting," he says, and he's being absolutely honest about that too. Hank McCoy, Emmett Argyle, and a call from Stark Industries that simply can't wait. Of course, to the others, it may appear as if he's dodging an ugly situation.

Incidentally. Purely unintentional.

"You'll both be receiving my contact information within the hour," he says to Sara and Hellboy. "Anyone you can think of who can help…" Then, he looks to Jericho, blinking. "Just how the hell can they steal…" But, his phone is chirping again. "I really do need to be going!" he breathes. "Cheers, then."

The SHIELD car is pulling out in approximately half a minute later.

-

"Yeah, Hell gets pissed when people won't give their demons back," Hellboy mutters darkly. Not that he has a lot of experience with that sort of thing, of course. He heaves himself up off of his bench and clops over toward Qinguang. "Hey. Cheen-whatever. Somebody stole your demons and broke some of 'em. Sounds like they owe you a lot of money. That sucks." He pulls out a zippo, clamps his jaw down on his cigar, and re-lights it. After a couple of lazy puffs, he gets to the point: "You guys ever hear of a collection agency?"

-

Melinda May can't truly remember how to get out of listening to the listing of grievances, so is letting the demon read when Trent, then Fitz, then Hellboy all interrupt in their own ways. Fitz…. she'll glare at him later. She knows what he's got to deal with right now. Trent receives a brief glare for interrupting the demon, even if she wishes she knew for a fact that she could safely do so herself. And then… Crap on a crutch, Hellboy, are you trying to get us all killed?

-

The Hellking rolls up the scroll, remarkably quickly and mutters something about 'western barbarians with no manners'. The liondog beside him just looks bored. Possibly they've been at this for a while. "We have determined that the demons in question went missing at the Triskelion. We do not yet know who the thieves are, so as the owners of the three part palace, I am presenting you with our grievances and petitioning for redress. The order of things has been disrupted. Is this not why you have the Balance present?" He gestures to Sara. "Is this not why you are conferring with your own Hell-Prince?" Clearly someone has mistook the nature of the meeting. Spilt paperwork is probably on the bottom of everyone's lists.

"Yeah I've got nothing either but he's not hitting us." The fact that Sara and Hellboy seem known to the king of paperwork hell gets a quirked eyebrow from Trent. Even more when: "Is this not why the representative of the Old One's Gate is here?" Oy. How did he know that?

"All we know is that the demons were stolen by 'the Lords of the Serpants'."

"HYDRA." Jericho mutters, shaking his head. "HYDRA stole demons from hell. Because of course, why not. Well, at least we have a detective here to help with that part…" He looks up at Sara and then glances up to Hellboy. "And someone with a mile high grudge against recycled Nazi's…"

-

Every time, Sara finds out new things about where the Witchblade has been before. Apparently now she's the collections department or something. Taking a deep breath, she looks back to the skeleton, considering for a moment. "What sort of redress are you seeking?" she asks.

-

"I represent the BPRD," Hellboy corrects the King, with an emphasis on 'resent.' "And I'm not a prince. But if you want us to confiscate their stuff, or whatever payback you want, you give us their address or some way to find them. We take care of the rest. That's how collection agencies work." He shrugs. "Seems like it would be a lot less trouble than running from door to door like a beggar." Hellboy may not seem bright, but that was a calculated insult. With any luck, he can get the demon to see his current task as beneath his dignity, and start putting his dogged efforts toward finding HYDRA for SHIELD instead.

-

Melinda May can only sigh as the others start interfering. Maybe that's for the best anyway. She's got a headache starting right about where there's a butterfly bandage at her hairline. And besides. ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. "Is there any chance of you three shutting the HELL up and letting me try to figure this out?" Cranky May is cranky.

-

The Yama King looks between Sara and Hellboy. "I shall find what I can for you. And when I do, I expect there to be balance. Redress is Balance. Hell has been mightily disrupted, it's servants abused and its budgets turned on their ears. For balance to occur, the 'serpent lords' must suffer likewise." The skeletons eyes turn back to May. Waiting. Clearly she's not done.

"I didn't know you did Repo work." Jericho murmurs to Sara as May tries to figure out how to end a meeting with her culture's version of the Devil.

-

"I am all for the suffering of the serpent lords," Sara agrees, hands up as she takes a step back to let May do her thing. "Hey, go for it," she agrees easily. She's got enough things to do with demons. No need to take over any more other cultures. As Fitz runs, she looks after the doctor, shaking her head slightly. "SHIELD," she mutters to Hellboy. "Always a bucket of fun."

-

Hellboy throws both hands up when May warns him off. "Fine," he harrumphs around his cigar. "You bargain with the demon, and I'll sit back and watch." He turns around to do exactly that, putting the full weight of his habitual grouchiness into every step back to his park bench. He sprawls on it in a pose of exaggerated laziness, taking in smelly smoke like a sommelier sampling a particularly exquisite red.

-

Melinda May can't help but wonder if Illyana would be willing to 'loan' some of her Limbo demons to the Chinese demon-king as recompense for the ones that won't be returning home. At least until there are properly trained replacements. When she speak to the demon this time, she does so in proper Mandarin, partly so Trent won't fall over laughing at what she's saying. "The serpent lords are indeed the ones that pulled your demons from their assigned tasks. However, in defending ourselves from these serpent lords, I regretfully inform you that my allies and I were forced to defeat and possibly permanently destroy several demons. What would you consider fair recompense for the ones that will not be returning to their duties?"

-

Jericho can't help but grin a bit anyway. The fact that May's speaking in chinese has some significance.

"SHIELD's in a bad way right now." He murmurs to Sara and Hellboy. "Lost a fair number of people last night and more to other attacks. I do appreciate you guys coming out. I may not play well with the agency but they need the help and there's only so much I can give them."

The Yama King considers that for a moment. "Balance visited upon the Serpent Lords… and a show of unity." He points to Hellboy. "We lost a high ranking Prince in charge of the punishments for those who misfile their expense reports. I require a replacement until we train a new one. Permit me to send the relevant approval paperwork to your hell prince. He need not come to Diyu itself. I am sure he will be busy."

-

"Totally up for 'visiting' the Serpent Lords," Sara notes to May, raising a still-gauntleted hand. "Just point me in the right direction." The latter part, though, gets a lift of her brows as she tries to figure out just what's being said there. "I'm pretty sure SHIELD's going to owe the city for most of my salary this year," she adds to Trent. "But at least I know I'm being useful. And they've got some serious resources."

-

"Whoa. Wait. What?" Hellboy sits forward so fast that his cigar comes flying out of his slack-jawed mouth and falls into the grass. "Crap!" He hops off of his bench and starts stomping with one hoof, trying to put out the ember before it can start a larger fire. "What did he say?" he continues, still putting out fires. "I am not paperwork guy. No way."

-

Melinda May turns to look at Hellboy flatly. "No, he said if you'd help FIND a temporary replacement for the missing demon while he trains a new one, that would be very helpful." And she'll deal with the paperwork herself if necessary. She then turns back to King Quinguang and nods once politely. "We will try to arrange something. But I do feel I should emphasize, my lord, that most mortals do not even believe in hell and demons, so locating a demon that can adequately fulfill your lost Prince's duties might be… challenging."

-

"One shall be acquired." The Yama king looks over to Jericho. Fortuntely, not that anyone but possibly Hellboy can see it, the hacker has 'property of' markings all over him. So no further comment is made on the matter.

"I may have a direction for you soon if you can get approved to take a field trip, Sara. Shouldn't be more than a day trip. Maybe a couple of them." Not like Syria. Which Sara didn't come on so she wouldn't know. Still…

"Then we are agreed." Oh May. You're going to have to explain that one to Hellboy. At least, with him on board for this problem, he can probably get a temporary office in the Tri. Lend BPRD's expertise to this mystical nazi problem.

The Hellking turns and it's celestial escort does as well after bowing once very deferentially to both Hellboy and Sara. There's a flash of light and both are gone. Along with that huge scroll.

-

Sara watches the Hellking disappear, waits for a good count of ten, and then speaks: "Well. That's a new one for me." She takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she nods to Trent. "I'm going to check in with Steve and see what Fitz's plans are, and then I should be able to make it out. Have to make sure they get the paperwork over to the precinct, too."

-

Hellboy finally gets the fledgling fire stoped into submission, leans over with his hands on his knees, and pants. "I only WISH that were a new one for me," he grumbles when he has his breathing under enough control to straighten. He glances around, then asks, "Does everyone who needs my number have it? 'Cause there is a hot bath calling my name."

-

Melinda May really doesn't WANT to because she's still in a snit over getting put on administrative leave, but… "No. I'll need to keep in touch in case King Quinguang's paperwork shows up where you are." She's expecting it to be in ancient Mandarin, after all.

-

"I do. Or your handler's anyway. I'll be in touch. Probably with both of you." That Jericho will keep May in the loop goes unsaid even if it's possible she's wishing he would not at this point. "Thanks again for coming out. Give Steve my best Sara… er… if you think it wise." The hacker has no idea what Captain America thinks of him and no desire to make things worse. One more nod to May and he turns to move on out.

-

"Got the card back at the office," Sara nods to Hellboy. "I'll be in touch, Trent," she adds with an upward tip of her chin before sticking her hands in her pockets and starting off.

-

"Good," Hellboy answers with a nod, already heading for the edges of the park. "Then I'm out of here."

-

Melinda May sighs again as everyone just walks away. She is SO going to have to ask Coulson for help with the demonic bureaucratic paperwork.
