As Babs has been reminded on her shopping trip with Pepper, Cricket and 'the girls', that it was Valentines Day. This is not something that Babs would normally thing much about but … well …. Rowan is in her life and she really does rather like him. So she's invited him to join her in the Clocktower, for Brunch and maybe to watch a movie. It's difficult to do dinner, given she works of an evening, and Brunch generally works for both of them.

She's not going to mention the foundation garments that Cricket had selected for her… they aren't anywhere near that point but she is wearing the lovely dress and matching shoes that Cricket (and Pepper) selected. On the table in her kitchen, is a modestly wrapped present and Babs actually fidgets nervously whilst she waits for the Blue Warrior to arrive.

***

Thank goodness that Rowan had noticed people were acting a little different be cause he did actually ken to the fact that on this day (for reasons he still doesn't quite understand) it's appropriate to 'dress up'. This being surfacer code apparently for wearing finer, more expensive clothing. So when the Blue arrives it's in a nice colored button up, slacks and… okay he doesn't get 'coats' mostly because he doesn't get cold. But he's told they're customary because one must have something to hold over one's shoulder. Which he is.

He might be doing it wrong.

"Hi Babs." He greets her as the elevator opens. "Wow. You're looking nice today."

***

"So do you" Babs eyes the Blue appreciatively as he enters "You're getting the hang of these surfacer clothes, Rowan." His exclaimation on her look has her flush slightly "And thank you. I went shopping with some friends yesterday. Miss Potts, you remember her don't you?" Falling back onto routine, the redhead manages a warm smile "Would you like some tea? I only just put some on to steep…. "

***

"I'd love tea." Rowan smiles as he heads toward the kitchen to help. Only it turns out she's beaten him to it. "So… I'm kind of embarassed to admit I'm not quite sure what everyone's celebrating. Only that they seem to be celebrating something."

***

"Oh… of course" Babs smiles and lets Rowan bring the tea out if he wants. "It's Valentines Day, Rowan. It's sort of a big thing for some people." Babs flushes again "Now days, it's a celebration for couples… people in love or people who like each other rather a lot." she shrugs slightly "It's origins are a little more complicated…. I suppose you've balloons, chocolates and flowers around today? Lots of red things? It's all part of the tradition. I can't say I fully understand it, myself." Babs is far too practical and potentially reserved. "But I did think you and I might celebrate a little. Our friendship, at least…"

***

"Oh…" Rowan nods and thinks that over briefly. "I was wondering, but that sounds like a pleasan holiday." The blue returns with the tea and sits down near Babs. "That sounds nice indeed. So how have you been lately?"

***

Babs just smiles in mild amusement at the Blue Warrior. A pleasant holiday…. In the kitchen, she's got food stuffs for bruch, waffles, real canadian maple syrup, icecream and cream… The waffles are being warmed in the oven and she'll be serve it all up shortly.

"I've just been working really. Kind of Different Day, Same Stuff, type thing." She has missed catching up with Rowan in the last week though. "Once we've finished out tea, I'll organise the food I've got for Brunch. What have you been up to?"

***

Rowan nods thoughtfully. "I've been teaching Aspen to swim…" He sighs. "First lesson was hard for both of us. And I may need your help soon locating my people. I'm going to go check the bouys soon. Very soon."

***

"Oh?" Babs is interested to know how the lesson went "what was hard for you, Rowan?" she can imagine it was hard for Aspen "And of course. If the Atlantean cloud doesn't disappear soon, I've had some thoughts on how I might help you best." Of course, if the cloud disappears, Babs will have full access to the Oracle Network again.

***

Rowan looks down and sighs. "I had to hold her underwater until she breathed water in. Wasn't any way to get her to do it otherwise." Which meant, even though he'd explained it to her before hand, watching Aspen - a woman he likes and respects - struggle in primal fear for her life while he 'drowned' her.

***

That has Babs eyes opening wide "Oh. wow." she speaks softly "You really believed she was this Blue …. " the red head covers Rowan hand with hers "I can see why it was hard for you. Perhaps even harder than it was for her. I take it though, your faith was rewarded?"

***

"More than." Rowan affirms. "She took to it beautifully and her… latent Blue talents are starting to awaken. We'll need to practice more. Get her used to it before going to find my people, but we should be able to go sooner rather than later. I rather suspect Aspen will pick things up quickly." We… may are may not include Babs. Rowan would love to, of course, but he knows she has duties here that she can't and won't put off. Still, if she can help him find his people and contact them that'll be a huge step.

***

"Latent talents" Babs thinks for a moment "Or she's a telekine… is that what you mean?" Babs probably wouldn't go, not at least on their first visit, the last thing the two Blues need is a surfacer who can't walk, with them. "I'm glad it went well for you then." And of course she'll help…

***

"Hydrokine is more accurate, but yes. Latent and quite powerful. Which honestly doesn't surprise me." Rowan shrugs as he sips the tea. "She was on my homeworld too. One of the most powerful of the Blue. And honestly… if I can share it with you, I hope she takes the time to come to terms with it and our people. If our present trouble is any indication, the Blue may need her and the surface will need advocates below the waves."

***

"Hydrokine, right." Babs smiles faintly at that thought and settles back, listening as Rowan talks. "So I can imagine. The Atlantean thing, is troubling on many levels." Setting her cup on the table, the redhead smiles brightens a little "I've got some food for us, let me go and get it, while we keep talking." she's already moving towards her kitchen.

***

Rowan rises, partly to maek sure she's not going to need help and partly so he can keep watching her as they talk. "Anyway, we'll keep on that. You said you had some thoughts about contacting my people?"

***

If Rowan wants to help, there's icecream and cream to carry to the table, otherwise Babs has it pretty much sorted out. Soon the warm waffles and associated toppings will be on the table, along with plates and cutlery. "Help yourself, Rowan…."

"Oh… more about what I could do if this Atlantean cloud doesn't disappear soon." she shrugs slightly "It's affecting all sorts of communications… I generally have access to some good tech that might let me see where the ocean is 'different'." Sometimes, looking for what's not there is as informative as looking for what is there. "But if this cover keeps up, I'll need to move outside of it." which means not being able to use the systems in the Clocktower.

***

"Well it's possible that it will let up soon. I'm hopeful. But… honestly if it doesn't let up soon getting out of the city might be the best option, because things will start getting bad here." The Blue knows how significant weather can virutally isolate a city even as large as Gotham.

***

"Eat, Rowan." Babs gestures to the food on the table and smiles encouragingly. His words about leaving the city are considered and she nods "We discussed the long term effects of the weather on the city. It really depends on when you need the help… but I'll need you to help me get there."

Helping herself to some waffles, Babs tops them with Maple Syrup and Icecream. "What can you tell me about how the Blue cities are configured, laid out… we don't have to discuss it now, but I need to work out the type of things to search for."

***

Rowan watches Babs for a while and then follows suit, putting some ice cream on the waffles and drizzling the syrup on it. Let's see how this tastes… mmm. Not bad.

"Blue cities are much like surfacer cities, really. But I do not know if my knowledge will help in particular since all the Blue cities left on my world had been heavily fortified against attack… and a number of them had suffered attack several times.

***

Babs smiles as she watches Rowan "How are they?" nodding towards his plate. "Mmmm, ok. I was thinking, if they're anything like Atlantis, they're probably deep and there's likely some form of cloaking type tech. in use. So searching for the actual cities is going to be hard." Probably impossible "But, I could look for movement around the areas, listen to radio transmissions, even see if there are 'blank spots' that might indicate something that's hidden." Babs shrugs "Until I start looking, I just wouldn't know."

***

"It might be easier to make them come to us." Rowan smiles. Finding them might indeed be a challenge but… "I know of some military signals. Or what were military signals on my world. If we can get the right transmitting machinery we can broadcast the signal from a bouy and hopefully induce them to come investigate." Which could go poorly but he's hoping not.

***

"You're already trying similar, though, aren't you?" That's what he's told her. "Or do you mean to deploy them further out?" Babs can get the transmitters. She frowns a little at Rowan "And then what? Sit on, or near, the bouy until someone or something shows up?" It's not a bad plan, but still …

***

"Well I tried sonar, but the Blue don't use sound to transmit messages through the water… for kind of obvious reasons." Namely, everyone would hear them. "You can use extremely low frequency radio waves to do it. But I don't know how to build that kind of equipment much less run it." The dragon warrior shrugs. "Do you think you might be able to do something with that?"

***

Babs does have access to the resources to build the tech, if they don't already have have it. It might mean spending some time in the batcave or speaking to the Wayne Enterprises crew. Running it, that's the easy part. "Yes, I can. I'll take a look later today and see how long it will take." Looking at his plate, the redhead smiles a little "You still haven't told me what you think of the waffles."

***

"Oh, I'm sorry." Rowan smiles. "They're very sweet. I like them, though it occurs to me the Queen probably would not." Oh… dear. Queen Mera. Rowan hasn't heard from her since this incident started and he's concerned. There was an Atlantean attack yesterday and that bodes very, very will for how things are under the waves.

***

"No Mera wouldn't like them." Babs has seen how the Sea Queen reacts to sweet foods. It's almost comical, really. "I'm glad you like them. I thought you might." Watching Rowans face as he thinks, Babs falls silent, letting Rowan share as he will.

***

"The attack the other day. It's… a bad sign. Either the queen is losing control or she's been deposed. I'm not sure which. Didn't the news say she was there?" Rowan's found coverage of the event frustrating. "Either way, she can't have long before the situation is resolved. War or peace. This… in between will kill her."

***

The coverage was frustrating … and Babs isn't get much intel from her network either primarily due to that cloud overhead and the fact that the Atlanteans were rather secure. "From what I saw on the news, Mera turned up and ordered the invaders back… Are you speaking figuratively or literally about this in between bit killing her?"

***

"Both." Rowan sighs. "Atlanteans won't abide weakness in a leader. For all their advancement and civilization their core character is still animated by warrior pride." He glances out the window toward the sea. "If Mera can't make a case for not going to war, they'll depose and probably kill her."

***

"So things are grim for Mera." Babs feels pretty bad for Rowan and the Sea Queen "I wish there was more we could do to help, Rowan." Holding her hand to him, if he wants to take it, he can.

***

Rowan does and squeezes it gently. "So do I. I'll try to contact her soon but until something shifts I don't think there's anything anyone can do." He shakes his head and takes another bite of the waffle. It really is good.

***

That sounds about right to Babs. Squeezing his hand back, she tilts her head slightly, enjoying watching him eat. "Do let me know, if there's any help I can give you or her… "

***

"Of course I will. You're one of the few I trust." Rowan assures her and then glances over toward the couch. "Shall we move this over there? I'd like to just… relax a little, as best as possible. Or did you have other plans?"

***

Babs nods to the plain wrapped gift on the table "For you… a tradition on Valentines Day." She wanted Rowan to experience another surfacer tradition. She just couldn't bring herself to do chocolates and roses…

***

"Oh is that tradition?" Rowan seems a bit crestfallen that he didn't pick her up anything. Next time, perhaps. The blue reaches for the gift and starts to unwrap it carefully. Never know what might be inside.

***

It's a tablet, similar to the one Babs uses just not with all her fancy software on it. There's a selection of cookbooks and novels, some movies and games amongst other things. The Oracle App might also be on there. "Yes, it's a tradition, normally chocolates and roses … you might have noticed there were a lot onsale recently…. but … I'm slightly more practical and I don't think you've got a tablet" The redhead might be slightly embarrased.

***

"I don't…" Rowan powers it on and prods at it for a minute or two before looking up and smiling. "Thank you. These devices, they're hooked up to your Psyn- er, Internet, yes? I don't have a mobile device I can use for this other than a phone, this will be very useful." And easer to claw tap when he's a dragon.

***

"Yes it is, connected to our Internet. You'll be able to use it almost anywhere." Babs watches Rowan carefully, not realising he's envisaging using it as a dragon "I'm glad you like it. There's a collection of stuff on there, that I thought you might enjoy."

***

"I'm sure I will." Rowan says with a smile. "Thank you very, very much Babs." And he means it. Navigating Surfacer society, while getting easier, is still not simple for him. It's likely, unfortunately, how Aspen will feel if and when she meets her own people under the waves.

***

"It's my pleasure Rowan." Babs smiles and relaxes "Now, let me clear the dishes and we can go sit on the couch and relax." That had been part of the plan afterall. "Want to help?" Babs starts stacking the dishes and clearing the table, it won't take her long at all to do.
