The JL:A Lakehouse had been the sight of a Hydra attack not long ago but it had all been cleaned up by now with a combined effort of the Avengers and the local emergency services. Things were quiet now.

Kara was finishing off the latest episode of Secret Hospital, starring Michael Jon Carter aka Booster Gold, a team-mate of hers. Hawkpuppy and Streaky were sleeping on one of the couches, the pair having become fast friends.

A look at her phone was given, having texted Fenris earlier to see if he wanted to hang out and tell her more about some supernatural stuff like dragons and the wild hunt.

***

Fenris was a bit surprised to get the text but didn't waste any time coming over. Literally, within a minute of it being sent he'd portaled onto the nearby street and knocked on the front door. He knows that Kara's a member of a League… such things normally require a bit of protocol and he's not sure what it will be yet. Though he did bring something with him… a gift. And an offer.

***

Kara opens the door wearing sweats and a tank top, Jeremiah can see the soap opera on the tv even from here and the tub of ice cream on the table, "Hey Jer!" She usually didn't have guests, like never and it takes her a moment before she steps away from the door, "Please come in. Can I get you anything? We've got like everything, beer, soda, juice, water, coffee, tea, water?" She looks like she's about to think of more things to list off unless Fenris accepts something.

***

"Just some water is fine." The Old Wolf smiles as he steps in. 'You seem well. Everything going okay for you after… the incident on the beach?" It's been a few days and he hopes that she's not too hurt. She doesn't seem to hurt. Perky, really.

***

Kara moved into the kitchen getting some fresh ice water, "Yeah, I've been feeling better since I got to take a ride on a dragon and feet the sun for a bit. I think I just need time to recharge or something." Under ordinary circumstances, anyone hurt that bad claiming they rode a dragon would probably be hallucinating from strong medication.

She didn't understand how her powers worked but at least a few of Superman's friends had spoken of it, "It might be a little longer but it's given me a good reason to learn to do things like everyone else does. How about you? Doing better after our encounter with King Kong the other day?"

***

"Much yes." Fenris smiles watching Kara move about. He accepts the water and takes a sip. "I was wondering, actually, if you might be willing to help me with something. A project of mine, actually."

***

Kara leads Fenris back to the living room, putting Secret Hospital on pause and swapping to the news on mute, a story about the recent Atlantean attack playing. She picks up her own hot chocolate as she sits back down, "Of course, just ask and you've got my help whenever you need it."

***

Fenris produces a Ley Pendulum. It's a crystal, sapphire in this case, on the end of a long chain with a small medallion anchoring it at the other end. "For some time magical disturbances have been growing out of control. The recent attack on the Bronx is just one of the more obvious examples. Ordinarily people are supposed to prevent these things from getting that far, but we've been stretched thin and our Sorcerer Supreme has only recently returned. I'm… asking people I think I can trust for help. And offering them the tools to do so."

***

Kara was usually pretty lost when it came to magic but she had been learning more and encountering more strange things on a daily basis, "That doesn't sound good, I've seen some of the bad things magic can do when it's controlled." Her eyes are drawn to the sapphire crystal, it was beautiful. She looks back to Fenris, "Just tell me what to do and I'll help." Anything for Earth.

***

Fenris is also watching the crystel. It tugs on the chain and starts to point at Kara. "Hrm. Well it likes you. That's good. This is a Ley Pendulum. It's an artifact that allows for communication and teleportation along the ley lines and enhances ones powers in times of great need. And all I need you to do is be willing to move when bad things start heppening. Some magi or another, often me, will have some kind of inkling something's wrong, but I can't be everywhere. Hence the help."

***

Kara smiled brightly when the crystal pointed towards her, "That sounds like a very big responsibility, I'd be honoured." She was still a little fuzzy on some things, "So, what's a Ley Line?"

***

"Well… let me show you." Fenris holds one hand out and murmurs a few soft words. An image of the earth springs into being. One crisscrossed with glowing lines. "Ley Lines are… it's best to think of them as rivers of power. Energy flows along them. The magic of the earth comes from them, and is contained in them, and spills out of them all at once. When something rips at reality, it affects the Ley Lines. Sometimes damages them. But there's always ripples that can be felt if one knows how."

***

Kara listens intently, as a Kryptonian it was a bit hard for her to wrap her head around magic sometimes unless she looked at it like a really advanced form of magic, "That's amazing, so the leylines are sort of like quantum entanglement?" She knew physics though, "And magical disruptions are distortions?"

***

"Sort of. Think of them as examples of natural law that most people have difficulty understanding. It's an imperfect analogy, but it works. Magical disruptions are…" Fenris trails off. "Well, what they are depends on the source."

***

"I think I understand, well as much as I'm going to now anyways. Most of my magical experience comes from my time with you and Zee, at least the big things. I've seen some others in action though doing spells and whatever." Kara sips at her hot chocolate and Streaky walks up to Jericho meowing at him before hopping up on the couch, too bad nobody could understand him, "So my job would be to help fix these disruptions when they pop up?"

***

"Or defeat the people causing them. Or whatever the situation calls for. Magic likes variety." Fenris says wryly. "And it doesn't often play by the rules."

Fenris does, in fact, speak to animals, and reaches down to scratch at the cat's ears. "Well hello bold one. Not many approach me." Sensing the predator that he is.

***

Streakys ears were definitely back a little when he approached Jericho but he remembered him from the other day. He's trying to reach around and unclasp the little cape Kara has put on him, it's even got an S (House of El) collar on it. When Jericho greets him and he meows back, he's asking for someone to take this cape off of him.

Kara reaches over and scratches the top of Streaky's head, "Isn't he cute with the cape? Since he's a Supercat." She loved cats, they often distracted her, "Count me in Jeremiah. It sounds serious and I want to do anything I can to keep Earth safe." She would not lose it, ever.

***

Fenris laughs. "He is quite cute with the cape, but he might find it a bit uncomfortable." Or silly. He doesn't say silly though. "In that case hang on to that Pendulum. You'll hear from me or the other soon enough i expect. I'll teach you how to use it. It's not hard at all."

***

Streaky looks between Kara and Jerermiah and just lies down on the couch putting his paws over his face when nobody will take his cape off, he's likely telling Fenris 'Thanks a lot!' when he meows.

Kara reaches out gently to take the pendulum, looking at it in wonder, "It's so beautiful. Thank you Jermiah." She slips it around her neck and she can't stop smiling, "Do I know anyone else who is going to help?"

***

Fenris watches as the dowsing pendulum goes around Kara's neck like a necklace. Well… that's one way to not lose it. "I'm not sure. Jesana I think is new to the city, and I doubt you've met Charlie. You may know Zatanna though. I plan to see if Kate is interested, and then a couple mutants I also know." Diverse group but that's what it takes, really. "At the moment there's just you and the other three."

***

"Zee is my friend, yep! She's great. Kate is also perfect, she's responsible, brave, selfless and a lot of other stuff basically everything a hero is and should be." It was clear that Kara had a bit of idolization towards Kate, it was hard not to respect someone with no powers who put herself in danger so often, "Does our group have a name?" She reaches up to touch the sapphire crystal rubbing her fingers against it, whether it was intended to be worn or not at least it would always be worn and ready to activate!

***

"I'd not thought much about it to be honest. You may want to confer with Charlie when you meet her." Fenris smiles. "Time was when it was called the Order of the Leymen but… I think perhaps a different name is needed to reflect the times." He considers. "Something like 'Primal Force' perhaps."

***

Kara nods, excited to meet Charlie and Jesana both, "Primal Force is kind of fitting, since you're kind of a Primal God, right? And we'll be sort of like your force to help deal with magical disturbances. Sounds better then Order of the Leymen, since we're not all men."

***

"At the moment, none of you are." Fenris chuckles. "But yes, perhaps that will be a fitting name." He glances down at Streaky and ruffles the cat's ears again. Ley Pendulums channel those primal forces. Mostly for effects that are more utilitarian than heroic but some have learned to use them in other ways. It always takes time though. "Though that may change. And yes Kate is ideal." He thinks of her as another wolf, really.

***

"I think she's out with Clint or I'd get her to come downstairs." Kara was still pretty awestruck by the responsibility she had been given, but it made her feel good, "So when do we all meet? I'm too excited to wait. Can we just summon everyone now?" She had a lot of energy for someone who needed a full on recharge before getting her powers back.

***

"I can arrange a meeting with the others without too much difficulty, though I rather suspect that it will take quite an event to get ten of you in the same place." Fenris pauses. "If I ever find ten suitable people. In the mean time, you will meet Charlie and Jesana and I imagine you'll work often with Kate." It's good to recruit people from who already know one another for exactly this reason.

***

Streaky begins purring after having his ears ruffled by Fenris, rolling over on his tummy and putting his paws up in the air as he waited for a belly rub.

"Only ten of us. Hmm. Sounds like we're going to have a lot of work to do!" Kara doesn't seem at all downed by the prospect, but excited, "Do I just wait for now then till we all meet? And you call upon us?"

***

"You'll have help. I'll be around and I may try to get another mage I trust to advise as well." Fenris does not mention that this mage is a hell queen. He's thinking about it. So far as he's concerned Illyana is solid. "I will call you when needed though I do not doubt you will find that trouble finds you. The pendulums themselves have a sense for it. But yes, just wait… unless you feel like looking for trouble."

***

Kara finally stops touching the pendant, she had sometimes gone out looking for trouble; especially when frustrated, "Sorry if this is too personal but what is it like where you came from? Is it very different than Earth? Are you really a God? Can you just transform into wolves? When's the next Wild Hunt?" Yes she had just really rapid fired out all of that without giving a chance for a response, she had been waiting to ask all that stuff!

***

"So curious." Fenris laughs as he makes himself comfortable. "Home is… a magical land. Quite literally. Asgard has magic and technology alike - they're often both the same thing - far beyond this world. But it's a world of old customs and… dire fates. I was fated to do terrible things, and so I was locked away in a cave alone for a very long time." And there he slowly went mad until he broke out and Ragnarok came… and the then the cycle started again. It was tiring of this cycle that led him here.

"I alone among my people can take this shape. I'm not like many of them. And yes, I am as much a god as many of the other beings humans have called gods." Not sure if that's really an answer but there you go.

"Wild Hunts do not normally happen on earth except near the end of autumn or if they're called here. They're not good things, normally."

***

"I was once told Asgard sounded similar to Krypton." It's all she comments as she listens to the story that came pretty darn close to mythology if she looked it up, it made her origin story seem like a flickering candle beside a supernova, "Do you go home anymore? And do you think I could go with you one time?" She frowns a bit at the explanation of the wild hunt, "Probably best if there's no wild hunts on Earth to."

***

"No. I don't get along with my relatives, suffice it to say." Fenris explains. Which is an understatement that glosses over a lot of history. "However I know people who would welcome you, I think, should you choose to go. But if you decide, tell me. I can at least teach you enough customs that you don't end up accidentally married over there."

***

"You should try to make peace with your relatives if there is a chance, not that I know a lot about that kind of stuff." Kara lacked experience in those kind of matters, but she did know she would give so much to see her family again even if she knew they were gone forever.

"Customs are a good idea. I had no idea on Earth giving your number out to a boy meant he was asking you for a date, knowing my luck I'd end up married to Thor or something." Yes, she had heard of him at least. Then again, that wouldn't be the worst accidental marriage!

***

"Thor wouldn't be the one to watch out for." Fenris smiles. He knows of a number of Asgardians who would be quite pleased with a catch like Kara. Though that's not a worry for the present. "I shall give it some thought, but there are millenia of history between us and very little of it is good. That's how it goes, often, when one is a monster like me."

***

It's a cheerful offer from Kara, one that she seems excited about, "I'll help you if you want. It wouldn't be any trouble at all." She really had no clue how complicated things probably were for Fenris and his family, "You're not a monster though, you're very nice." She pets Streakys belly, "Even Streaky thinks you're nice and CATS KNOW if you're a bad person. I read it on the internet, they can see anything." One day someone would need to explain the internet wasn't always right to Kara.

***

Fenris chuckles. "Have you ever read the stories of me?" He asks quietly. "They're true. Legend yes, but true. I am a creature fated to kill the Allfather and eat the sun at the end of all things. I simply tired of being the villain of the story. And came here where I could chose my own way."

***

Kara shakes her head, "No, but I'm kind of tempted to now. Don't ever think you're tied to a single destiny though, the future isn't written in stone and you can ALWAYS make your own path Fenris." She places a hand on his arm, "Fate is what you make of it. My father taught me that." Maybe not directly but in the fact that he had saved her at any cost.

***

Fenris smiles. "Your Father sounds like a wise man. I'd ask why he's not here with you but I get the feeling it's not a happy story." And the old Wolf doesn't want to pry.

***

Kara felt it was only fair to share with Fenris especially after he had told her of his life and the tribulations he had faced, "I come from a distant planet called Krypton. It was a wonderful world, filled with beauty and wonder but also an arrogance. My people put their pride before the fall and did not believe that our planet could be destroyed despite the signs, they believed we were fated to continue on."

She smiles sadly, "My father and my uncle both fought to convince their fellow members of the Science Council, the leaders of our world of the destruction that was coming. Nobody would listen to them, they were declared heretics."

She shows him the House of El (S-Symbol) on Streaky's collar and explains, "I come from The House of El, one of the greatest houses in Krypton's history. Our family symbol also means hope. My father couldn't save our people, but he gave everything he had to save me. I only hope him and my mother knew how much I loved them."

***

"I'm sure they did." Fenris says quietly. He does not know where her people go after death. He's never seen any of her kind in the fields of the brave or the halls of the dishonored. If he did he'd take her there. "And I am glad they did so."

***

Kara couldn't help it, she had begun to cry thinking of her family, her homeworld and her people, "That's why I would do anything to keep Earth safe." Her fists ball up for a moment and even Streaky gets up off his back and reaches up to lick her face.

***

Fenris watches for a moment and then reaches over to hug Kara. "Shhhh. I feel the same way. It's your home, yes? And you've already lost one. Do not worry, you're not alone here. There are others who will go to the ends of the cosmos to keep this world safe, or if not that, then this world's people."

***

Kara returns the hug, very grateful she's managed to make so many good friends on Earth; people who were just like family to her no matter how short a time she had known them. She reaches up to wipe the tears away, "That's why it's such a great home, there's so many people who care about it. Just like my Father and Uncle cared about Krypton."

She reaches up to touch the sapphire pendant, brightening noticeably, "That and we have Primal Force to help protect it to! Magical disturbances, you better look out."

***

Fenris smiles and lets go. "You will all do great things." He hopes so. He very much hopes so. The signs point to an age of Awakening. Chaos is part and parcel with such things. Changes, power, destruction. He shakes his head. "Now, I think I owe you a story of times gone by or three. You seemed very curious."

***

Kara leaned back on the couch hugging a pillow, "By Rao, yes! Who better to hear the story from then someone who was probably around for it to!" She had guessed Fenris had to be incredibly ancient, maybe older than Ozymandias. She tickles Streaky still having no idea the cat was intelligent as well as superpowered, "Now sit still and listen closely Streaky." She was now holding him like a pillow while she listened to Fenris tell stories of times gone by.
