Business Synergy

Summary:
March 15, 2015: Karen Starr and Janet van Dyne meet to discuss business opportunities.

van Dyne Industries

van Dyne Industries. One of the downtown Manhattan towers of Technology and Industry. At this point even the red bus tours have started to call the Baxter Building, Stark Industries, and van Dyne Industries the technology trio. Of course there are other buildings, like Dacosta's or Queen Consolidated, but the history of pure technology is in those three.

The lobby is expansive. The private elevator to Janet's office is smooth and elegant. Reflective black glass. The lobby it opens up to has a administrative desk, without a chair, a large black monitor screen, and a double door to the right and to the left.

The screen comes to life with the glowing Red Eye from 2001 Space Odyssey and a voice intones "Ms. Starr, Ms. van Dyne is waiting for you in her office." and the door to the right will unlock and open.

The office is expansive, half of the floor easily with a balcony, an area clearly designed to host a formal gathering, an extensive board table, and in the back a very large black metal and glass desk. Very high technology looking.

"Thank you, uhm… Hal?" says Karen Starr with a wince. The high-powered CEO of Starrware ~Solutions~ was wearing a smart suit-skirt. Dark colored blazer over a white blouse, with a greenish tie, dark skirt that reached a little past her knees, stockings, and black business pumps with a bit of a heel to them.

Short blonde hair was pulled back and tied up in a bun at the back of her head, a pair of bangs allowed to come down to frame her face. With her brilliant smile, she was ready to go. Karen desperately loved these shoes. And the reason why might become obvious.

*CLOP CLOP CLOP CLOP*

Every step she took on hard floors had a bit of gravitas to them, and, carrying her briefcase, she enters the office readily, her nose crinkling with her smile as she spies Ms. van Dyne.

"Miss van Dyne, how are you?" she asks, "I hope today is finding you well," she adds, her tone of voice a bit jovial - and a little bit excited. But still professional enough.

***

Janet is behind her desk. She has on an obscenely expensive and stylish blue blouse with what looks like ribbed Roberto Cavallai jeans, light blue, with a stylized subtle pattern of jewels on the pant legs in the form of small Wasps and flowers. Her shoes are well out of sight under the desk right now.

The hologram seems to be of some form of small Jet aircraft. "Hello Miss Starr." she smiles a bright friendly smile. "Pretty good…" she spins the hologram out expanding it above the desk to show off the Jet. "So, this is a Quinjet made for SHIELD. They would like to say it was their own doing but Wakanda was involved. The design is remarkable though.. I'm thinking about having my people make a better one though." she ponders it.

***

"I have to say, it's an honor to have you meet with me," says Karen, her nose still crinkled. While Janet seemed to shop at the highest fashions ever, Karen still looked sharp - a good portion of her outfit purchased at Ann Taylor's. So… not high fashion, but presentable and traditional business clothing.

Stepping forward then, she offers her hand for a shake.

"Your people design weaponry for SHIELD?" asks Karen, her voice sounding quietly amazed. "Wow - I didn't realize that van Dyne Industries had a think-tank as well. Ours focuses on less… military solutions to problems," she says, her eyes flickering over the quinjet design. "…unless there's an aspect of your quinjet redesign that I could put some of my scientists on. I have a… uh… couple physicists. I think one sorta specializes in propulsion?" she says. "Which is a little like aeronautics, right?" she says.

***

Despite how fancy her clothing, her demeanor is friendly and open. She just seems happy about her day and everything else.

She slips up to her feet and leans over the desk disrupting the hologram to shake your hand. "Oh.. no." she pauses "Actually yes we do sometimes. Not weaponry for the most part but other equipment. Military and government contracts can be worth a lot of money really. I was more thinking of having them design something like it and offering it to the JLA as a gesture of support. They could probably use something like what SHIELD has you know." a bright smiled shrug. "Well tell me a bit more about your company and why you wanted the meeting? What is it you are interested in?"

***

Ah, this was Karen's favorite part.

The smile on her face grows wide, even as she settles down in a seat across from the other, glancing up at the hologram briefly. "Well, I founded Starrware Solution Laboratories as a way to kinda… give back to the world what the world has given me," says Karen, her blue eyes shining a little bit. "As such, we try to focus on novel solutions to real world problems that other groups tend not to look at," she says.

"For example, we have a biologist who is focusing on creating a… uh… external voicebox of a sort, that will allow a chimpanzee monkey to speak. While that is cute for the monkey, the benefit for patients who have had their ability to vocally communicate would be enormous."

Another moment. "We also have a few people who are working on a functional evaporator - something that pulls moisture from the air in enough amounts to both keep the environment safe, and provide clean, potable water in places that might not have access to it," she says. "…so you can kinda see we're all over the place," she says.

***

Janet reaches and spins the Jet hologram out of existence. "Well not entirely excited about the talking primates. Not Monkeys by the way." she smiles though "I think external is probably not the way to go… probably microsurgery to repair the voice box or insert an implant." a shrug there, friendly though like she is trying to be disarming about her critical feedback "The evaporator is really cool though. If it is energy efficient it could help farmers.. villages.. anywhere there are droughts. The environment safe and energy efficient is the key."

***

"Well, our long term goal - once we get that working - is to kinda advance that tech into something more - a universal translator of sorts that you just kinda wear," says Karen with a sparkle to her eye. "And surgery can be a frightening - and expensive - procedure to undergo. If we can make the tech affordable enough, it could provide a decent measure until they can get that kinda implant you're talking about," says Karen.

"There are other projects, although those are the really large ones right now. Many of the others are still in the ideas phase - we're still a fairly new company, for all intents and purposes," says Karen with a brilliant smile.

"So what sorts of projects do you have on your plate? Beyond the Quinjets?"

***

Janet kicks back in her chair studying you. "Well to be honest I chair the company and own it but I'm not deeply involved in all of the day to day. My CEO and executive team handles most of that for me." she looks thoughtful. "There are a lot of divisions. My favorite is the stuff we are doing around molecular technologies. Nanomaterials. Microscopic revolutions. That surgery I mentioned isn't an impossibility is the thing." a grin from the young billionaire "What else.. energy systems… have a lot of renewable projects spun up right now. Aeronautics. Infrastructure. Pretty much a bit of everything in one division or another. I do like the translator idea… bridge the language gap."

***

"There you go," says Karen, a little smile dancing upon her lips. "Of course, to convert the chimptalker to a translator would require us to have a working talker first, but after that, it would be a simple matter of programming, right?" says Karen, a little smile dancing up upon her lips.

A handful of moments more, and Karen rises to a stand, offering her hand again.

"I know you're busy, Miss van Dyne, so I hope we can meet again - and I hope that you would consider funding one or two of our projects. I'd be happy to send you a portfolio later with our full list, if you'd like to see some of the ideas coming up," she says, her lips - touched with a light bit of makeup - turning up into a smile.

***

Janet leans forward once more and shakes your hand "I'd be happy to review the list. Depending on their merits and a bit of due diligence we could probably swing funding for a joint project. The evaporator so far sounds really promising. One of my foundations charities is focused on third world farming, which I imagine you knew about."

***

"That's partly why I mentioned that one," says Karen with a wink, good humor filling her voice. "I thought that would be right up your alley. If you would like…" she says, her handshake firm… and strong, really. There was strength in that woman's arms. Which might be expected due to her sheer size. "…I can have my project lead start talking with yours, and we can start the collaboration right away - get them to start considering a budget and proposals.

***

Janet laughs "Well maybe, send me the list of projects with a short write-up, who is working on which ones and the elevator pitch and we can dig into which ones make sense to go to step two."

***

Karen 'finger guns' Janet with that, clicking her tongue with a wink. "You got it. Thank you again for your time - I'll be in touch," she says, kinda wiggling her fingers in a little bit of a wave as she heads towards the door of the office again.
