Planning a Rescue

Summary:
March 15, 2015: Magneto asks for Mystique's help planning a rescue and for some reason he is working with Jean Grey

M-Town Safe house

The meeting is a small apartment just outside Mutant Town. Unsurprisingly Magneto has its own safe houses in Manhattan. Surprisingly, the place seems to be inhabited, so perhaps it is not his apartment.

There was a time Magneto and Mystique saw each other very often, but that was before his 'retirement'. Ever since, their relationship has been strained, to say the least. But they met about two months ago, and there was no blood on the carpet afterwards.

It might still be surprising to Raven when she received a request for a new meeting from the master of magnetism. He wanted to talk about kidnapped mutants and request Mystique to use her contacts in the intelligence community to find out some information. The meeting is a small apartment just outside Mutant Town. Unsurprisingly Magneto has its own safe houses in Manhattan. Surprisingly, the place seems to be inhabited, so perhaps it is not his apartment.

***

After all these years, nothing completely surprises her when it comes to Magneto. There have been a lot of twists and turns. So when she gets the request, well the topic of conversation is easily enough to interest her and get her motivated to take the meeting.

An eighteen or so Caucasian teenage male in expensive jeans, classic converse sneakers, and a Nicks hoodie approaches the apartment door. Cautiously taking everything in before testing the door and letting himself in now.

***

Unsurprisingly Magneto is working on a laptop, a mug of (probably horrible) coffee at his side, and the usual frown on his brow. He glances up at the shape shifter the second 'he' opens the door, deceived just for half a second. "Just in time, and welcome, Mystique," he stands up to offer her a seat, old fashioned as usual. "There are a couple more… acquaintances coming, but they are going to be late. We don't need to wait for some of our business. How is your investigation coming?"

***

The teen shuts the apartment door and walks over to the suit, as he does, he stops being a he and becomes a blue skinned young woman in red leathers. "I'm doing quite well thank you for asking." which he didn't quite. She settles into the seat. "Which investigation.. The collar prototype have gone very quiet.. cockroaching on me.. but I continue to look. Other investigations have proven more interesting."

***

Yes, the collar was the main business. And it is bad news it is stalled. Magneto sighs. No criticism, because if Mystique lost the trail it is unlikely anyone else could have kept it. Besides, he is not her boss anymore.

The old man sets aside the laptop, "the Hydra angle?" He guesses. Because lately Hydra seems to be targeting mutants with unusual viciousness. "I am in touch with Armory," he explains. "What do you have?"

***

She sighs "The hydra angle. A faction within Hydra I haven't been able to fully nail down is trying to make mutants. Another faction seems to be trying to infuse mutants with magical abilities. They may report to the same council member or be separate heads of the beast entirely. Whichever the case…they are really ramping up activity concerning mutants. Capturing, torturing, and experimenting on them. The X-ers are heavily involved at this point of course." she pauses "Also Purifiers activity has stepped up."

***

"Of course, and yet they came to me for help," comments Magneto. "Not about Hydra, this is about some young students that were kidnapped in October. The trail has gone cold, but none of the usual suspects was involved. Instead I got this…" he turns the laptop to Mystique, to show a blurry image of a dark-haired woman. "Meta-human. Codename Sparky," all the good codenames are taken, or maybe the young generations lack imagination. "Seven children kidnapped in New York, and then she was spotted in Gotham a few days later. Interestingly enough three mutant children were freed by the local vigilantes, although not any of the seven."

***

Myst reaches out and snags the laptop pulling it in close to look at the blurry image. "Sparky… okay people need to come up with better code names. Are her powers at least fire or electricity based?" she smirks and studies it then offers it back. "Okay and not Hydra.. because they have been kidnapping mutants, young ones for experimenting?"

***

"Electricity, but I am not getting enough information about her," explains Magneto, "which is why I need you to check with your contacts in the US law enforcement agencies. We are looking for her and two metahuman associates. Most likely they are working or have worked for an international crime lord called Bane. He might be the kidnapper."

***

Footsteps, that's all they would hear. There wasn't a foreboding sense about her that she had put out to get to Mutant Town itself. Her meeting with Magneto was private; as such, the way she traveled with an aura of fear surrounding her to cause others to look the other way, the telekinetic field built up to brush people aside and away from her path with a gentle nudge. There was a scan of the building before her approach, hand tucked within her jean pockets, leather coat hung near the waist yet cinched due to the invasion of wrists and hands that keep it upright. Hair down and curled rather neatly, a quiet telling of 'going to get a few drinks in with the girls from college' told. She was there, at the door, gloved hand reached out and knob twisted and pushed.

There was no dramatics to this entry, gaze falling to one and the other, a faithful step inside as the door seemingly closes at Jean's accord. "Her other associate, I did not quite catch a name, had the ability to nullify our mutant gifts. Steer clear of that one if you care to."

***

Mystique stays curled in the chair, her presence the usual blank there to a telepath like Jean. She cocks her head "Ah Ms. Grey." she looks to Magneto skeptically there. Then back to Jean "Those tend to be good ones to avoid. What about the second associate. Also Bane… is very bad news. Though he tends to focus on guns and drugs.. mostly drugs?"

***

"Ms. Grey, come in and please, take a seat," Magneto stands to welcome the redheaded telepath. He is helmetless today, and unarmored. "I have a lead on your missing students, have you ever heard of the island of Santa Prisca?" He turns to Mystique to add, "the third member of the group might have some limited teleportation powers, or perhaps phasing powers. I do need the police reports, Mystique. As for Bane… whatever he is, in kidnapping mutant children he has made a fatal mistake."

***

That was something new. Magneto without a helmet. Jean was one to respect boundaries and even in present company, it remains true. They needn't worry about her being a bad person, even in present company, she was the epitome of good. "Mystique. Magneto." She greets them, taking a few steps forward to join them in the illicit apartment, bent on making herself comfortable. "The second associate, I don't know. I am unsure as to what he could do but he was easily swayed when prompted." She was lying through her teeth, but she held a good poker face. Most of her information she picked from Scott's memory and kept.

She knew nothing about Bane, the information the woman provided tucked away and filed.

"I haven't heard of the Island, no. But I suspect I will soon. Is that where the children are located? And this.. Bane person?" She does draw out a flash drive from her pocket, offering it up to Magneto so that he could plug in. "There's all the information on the remaining students and their gifts."

***

Mystique pulls out a high tech tablet of some sort and starts to work on it. The interesting thing to note is the back of it has a Hydra sigil on it. "Santa Prisca is the center of Bane's criminal kingdom at this point. Though honestly it has been the center of someone's drug kingdom. It's a Caribbean island founded by the Spanish."

***

"Correct, Santa Prisca is a small Caribbean island. An autocracy run by drug lords, one of which is Bane," explains Magneto, "he is just a human, but enhanced with a dangerous super-soldier drug called Venom. He is also reported to be an accomplished warrior." But just an human, so he gets very little respect from Magneto.

"I will go to the island soon," he muses, "but first, I will send someone to Gotham, as Bane might still be there. I asked Mystique for aid because her contacts can obtain information about Sparky's crew and whatever happened in Gotham. Some mutant children were rescued by local vigilantes. But none of them was one of your missing students."

***

Hydra? That was… concerning. But Jean does not mention anything about it. She just watches them work, a hint of a smile playing upon her features as they dole out the information she couldn't find. They were good. Damn good.

"You will not be going alone, Magneto." Jean states, leaning forward. "I'll put my foot to the grounds here in town to suss out any of his known allies. And perform a little bit of research back at the facilities on this island." That means, she'll be going for that secret room, where her powers would be amplified so that she could get a bird’s eye view of those who linger there.. and their thoughts.. and possibly the children.

"Hopefully, another will come along with us." She didn't make it an option. "I'll send him to contact you soon. Pick the time and place so you two can become acquainted, yes?"

***

Mystique keeps working nonpulsed, there is probably a good reason why she has the the tablet. Whether it is malign or benign is a better specific question. "I can shake down Gotham certainly and see what I can learn about Sparky and her crew. I can also get a pulse for Bane's current operations. If he is kidnapping mutant children he has to be stopped. We have to find out why. If he is trafficking in them then the buyers have to be dealt with." of course when she says dealt with it is likely a final solution.

***

It goes without saying Magneto and Mystique consider only terminal solutions for humans that kidnap mutant children. That is likely the reason Jean wants X-Men around for this business. "I work better alone," this is new, but after years trying to work with other mutants, and even lead mutant teams (often badly) Magneto has realized he indeed works better alone.

If he should be left alone to 'work' is a completely different question.

"But I will accept work with your X-Men in Santa Prisca. No need for Gotham… I expect nothing more than some detective work there," he concludes.

***

It was going to be nasty business that. Working with the two. Convincing them not to kill another person would fall upon deaf ears; possibly get her locked out from accessing the children and.. sadly.. the children swayed to their cause of murder and terrorism. No. They needed to be in the loving care of their parents.

So she keeps her mouth shut, her head bobbing in a faint nod, though.. there was a quiet plan in the works, one that just may gain her more enemies than not. It wasn't as if she slept at night either way. "Very well. We aren't approaching this as X-Men. Just people who want to bring those children home safe, unharmed, and with their parents. That's all." She looks to both of them now, a little smile drawing upon her lips. "We won't even wear the X symbols when it's time to fly."

***

Mystique keeps working on her tablet then looks up to Jean. "I don't care if you wear your xEr gear or whether or not you weasel your way in going with Eric to Santa Prisca." she eye rolls and looks back to the tablet "Especially because it sounds like the invitation to assist with that part of this operation was not extended to me." not that she really expected Magneto to play nicely with anyone else these days. A few more taps on her tablet. "As for the children yes, they need to be returned to their parents or perhaps your school. As idealistically naive as you lot are, it is better than normal high schools for those gifted like us Ms. Grey." also not Mystique has an alternative, she is much too busy for day care overseeing young mutant children. There is a war to fight.

***

Magneto is not going to talk about what to do with the children. They might not even be alive. In fact, he expects them to be dead, because he always expects the worst. Justice will be served, be it Brotherhood or X-Men style. "Oh, I look forward to see which X-Men will be coming with me." No, not really.

He transfers some files from Jean's flash drive. Mystique will receive a copy later today. "We can meet again in… three days?" He looks at Mystique for confirmation. "I am going to follow another lead in the meanwhile. Thank you both for coming."

***

A light smile goes towards Mystique. "I suppose it was a good thing that the invitation was not extended." Jean says, leaning back a little into her chair. "You do not care." Simply put. She does agree with her last bit, then glances towards Magneto, already feeling that his words were met with a little bit of sarcasm. But it doesn't matter at this point. Petty rivalries aside, the three were there because of one shared thing. Children. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Three days it is." She states, drawing herself from the chair, wanting to be the first to leave this ill situation, no matter how far they've come for information’s sake. "You're welcome Magneto. Thank you for hosting. Mystique." A nod is given to the woman, and soon she was out of their line of sight, the door opening before her, and closing thereafter.

***

The young blue woman rolls to her feet tucking her tablet away. "I do care Jean. More than just about anyone about mutantkind and our children. I just don't care for your methods or what you wear." she watches Jean go and then looks to Eric. "Whatever Eric, I'll track down this metahuman and get you the information. We can't tolerate this kind of activity against mutants." she heads for the door as well. A bit pissy. Mostly at Magneto it seems.
