"Avengers Assemble!"

The Avengers are a largely secret, superhuman, paramilitary team initiated by S.H.I.E.L.D. and jointly funded by Stark Industries CEO Tony Stark and, to a more limited degree, SHIELD itself. To that end, the Avengers are effectively an internationally-oriented black-ops squadron who, in the words of SHIELD Director Nicholas J. Fury, "do what we need them to do." Much like SHIELD, the Avengers focus is on global terrorist threats and the apprehension of extremely advanced and dangerous technology that cannot be countered by conventional means. Their activities are overseen and sanctioned by a sub-committee of the World Security Council via SHIELD, under many of the same conditions as SHIELD. (However, the addition of Stark's money and technology does give the Avengers a modicum more freedom than SHIELD enjoys.)

Where organizations such as the JLA are focused on lofty ideals and altruistic mandates, the Avengers are more pragmatic, and occasionally preemptive, in their approach to the threats they encounter. While their goals are generally the same — the protection of innocents and the preservation of peace around the globe — their methods are quite different. Unlike the JLA, they do not eschew the use of lethal force, nor do are they afraid to make the hard sacrifices in the name of the greater good.
